1 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2017 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/24/2019

I has some issues with my brakes when stopping at a red light. I stepped on the brakes and kept rolling forward and almost hit the truck in front of me. I thought it could be my pads worn down so I drove cautiously for a few days. I got a call a few days later from the dealership where I brought the truck from saying my on star notified them of a recall on my truck pertaining to the brakes. I thought good this could fix the problem. I took it by the dealer and they said it was a software update, and they did the update. I also asked them to take a look at the break pads so I could rule it out or do something about it. They said I have 60% of my brake pads still left. The next day I was going to work and I got to the parking garage where I work and noticed it was doing it again. I pressed down on the brakes to back up and I kept rolling forward and had to press down hard and to the floor so I could stop. So far there was not a crash but I feel its only a matter of time. This is a major safety issue for me and my family and feel there should be some sort of recall to fix this.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

The contact states had recall work completed, and the dealer discovered the rotors were severely corroded, and the brake pads needed to be replaced. The recall work was completed under NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000, concerning the anti-lock brakes. The service dealer suggested the metal contained in the rotors was defective. While the dealer acknowledged the fact that rotors should have a life span of more than 14,000 miles they refused to offer a free replacement. Therefore, the rotors and brake pads have not been replaced. The contact felt the recall should be expanded to include replacement of the corroded rotors. Updated 09/05/07.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/15/2005

Disc rotor delamination, anti-lock control. I was pulling a 3/4 ton van stuck in his yard, as I got him close to the hard surface ( driveway) I put on the brakes and the truck wouldn't stop, it hit the corner of his block house. No damage to the house however I had to replace all but hood and one headlight assy. 10 mph and neither bag deployed. I thought it was my own stupidity until reading all the issues on here w/ gm's braking problems. I feel a bit better about myself. The big issue !! all four rotors delaminated w/ 46,000 miles this is the 1st new truck I've owned and believe me it's been babied for sure. I was told by my service dealer there was nothing gm would do about this problem it was my problem for not driving it as much as I should (b. S. ) dealer wanted to charge me a grand to replace all the rotors and pads I did it for 500. 00 and still have the old parts. I'm sure gm should issue a recall on this, it is a definite safety issue did I fail to mention the muffler had a rattle in it and was replaced within the 1st 1000 miles, the thump in the steering column that has no way to be lubricated. Man I am disappointed in gm products.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 02/04/2005

The disc brake pads jam and fail to make proper contact with the rotors when dirt gets in the area that the brake pads ride on 'runners (stainless steel sheet metal covers the mounting frame where it rides . The clearance is so close and road it will jam the pads. This requires disassembly of all of the brake caliper and grinding of the rotor frequently. The pads not pressing on the rotors properly allow the rotor to rust further degrading the brake performance and causes uneven braking and greatly increased stopping distance -- I have had to overhaul the brakes three times and the repair mechanic says all gm trucks have the same problem.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 02/04/2005

There would be extended stopping distance when stopping at any speed. Dealership informed/repaired the rusted rear brake pads/disc. The rear rotors were heavily corroded with pieces breaking off which reduced the braking surface to less than 50 %.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

Rusted anti lock brakes are wearing out hubcaps and brake assembly. Consumer will need to take vehicle to dealership to be replaced. The front brakes wore out and damage on rotor. The front brake pads and right rotor were replaced. The rear brakes wore out. The rear pads were replaced and the rotors were resurfaced.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

The contact stated all four brake rotors rusted, resulting in damage to the brake pads. The vehicle had a free remedy performed on the brakes, NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning anti lock brakes. However the rotors and pads were not covered by this recall. He contacted the manufacturer, and they suggested replacing the old rotors with after market rotors. The rotors and brakes have not been replaced at this time. Updated 12/27/2005 - the rust on the surface of the disc was so deep that it tore the lining off the pads.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/30/2004

The brake pads fell off. As a result the rotors were ruined and needed to be replaced.

14 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/04/2004

Premature brake wear required brakes and rotors to be replaced at 32,000 miles. Service order indicated "delamination" of brake rotor caused the wear. This is contrary to the "long life" brakes that were indicated to me during the sale of this vehicle. Bought new.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/02/2004

I purchased a 2000 GMC Sierra 9 months ago as a "GMC certified used vehicle" from a dealer with 33,000 miles on it. Now, at only 10,000(not hard) miles later, the front brake pads came apart & took chunks of metal out of both rotors, resulting in a $500. 00 front brake job(new rotors & pads). I don't think 10,000 miles is lot to ask from a set of pads & rotors, that the dealer's service dept said had 40% life left @ delivery.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/10/2004

While driving at 30 mph the consumer applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. The dealer replaced the rotors and pads twice, however the problem recurred. The vehicle also had tailgate and engine problems. The tires were replaced due to thread cracks.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 08/17/2003

1. Loss of brakes at low speeds, which caused me to back into a ditch while backing out of my driveway. It feels like the abs is kicking in, but you loose all control of the brakes. 2. Have had to replace the brakes -- pads and rotors twice at my own expense in 46,000 miles.

18 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/07/2003

The rear passenger brake pad experienced premature failure. Dealership notified.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 09/14/2002

My 1999 GMC Sierra developed, over the past four months complete failure of the brake rotors on all four wheels. The brakes pads did not fail but they caused a groove to form in all four brake rotors. The rotors are pitted, rusted and worn below minimun thicknesses on all four wheels. The brake rotors are flaking and chipping around the edges and display a groove that is more than 3/8" below the normal thickness of the rotor. The rotors appear on first glance to have come off of a truck that is very much older than three years. The Sierra truck is also exibiting the same characteristics as the trucks mentioned in NHTSA campain id number 00v232008. When the truck is almost at a complete stop, the abs system activates and the vehicle shudders to a stop. The description in the above mentioned id number is the exact behaivior that promted me to take the truck to my mechanic, this truck was checked in April of 2002 and no brake problems were spotted. The repair job cost more than $700 to repair and my mechanic stated that he believes that the brake rotors should not have failed in this manner, that the type of failure that is indicated usually occures with worn brake pads, the brake pads in this case were not worn to the point of needing replacement.

20 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/24/2002

When coming to a gradual stop, abs brake system activates as speed goes below 10mph and pedal goes down to the floor. Pedal pulsates, causing extended stopping distance, which resulted in a collision. Mechanic replaced front left abs sensor. Upon reading a newspaper article, consumer found out there are others experiencing this same defect even though the dealer denied knowing about it. Before the failure consumer had the brake pads replaced.

21 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/04/2000

I have experienced excessive wearing of the front brakes, which has resulted in the rotors being replaced first, then the pads replaced 2 weeks later, and upon replacing the pads the new rotors required resurfacing. Since then after driving approx 5k miles, I was told that the new pads are appox 40% worn. I required the right front balljoint to be replaced when the rotors were done. When applying the brakes & hitting a bump in the road, the brake pedal goes down to the floor and has a complete lose of braking. It failed the annual inspection, due to a leaking donnut gasket. The tailgate squeaks & rattles, and appears out of alignment. The front driver's door creaks requiring repeated greasing. There appears to be excessive wearing in the front end and braking system, as well as excessive creaking & noise from the rear area of the truck, tailgate, and driver's door. I have been met with continued resistance and lack of answers from both the mfg and dealer. Any help or information would be appreciated.

22 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

24 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1997 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/12/1999

We have had vehicle back to dealer numerous times with no results they tell us they can not find any thing wrong with the brakes. We told them that numerous times when you apply brakes over ruff surface vehicle brakes fail and do not stop. I have skidded through intersections hoping not to hit anyone and husband has had numerous close calls applying brakes and not being able to stop. Since we have owned vehicle in the last 2 1/2 years we have had to replace the brake pads twice. Once at 22,000 miles and at 70,000 miles. Both times were factory pads. We have also contacted gm they told us that they had not had any complaints against the brakes and in todays paper 7/22/99 there has been a recall on 91 to 96 vehicles will the 97 GMC pu's also be included in this recall? while I am complaining we also had to replace the rear end which blew up after owning it only 2 weeks the dealer replaced carrier bearings only and now it is making noises again. Also the transmission had to be replaced at 6000 because it went out, also last year we had to have the power steering pump replaced because it went out and the battery at the same time because when it left the manufacture some one bolted the battery down and put the screw right through the battery. Could you please let me know if the recall will include the 97's also. Thank you. Glendora wright.

25 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/19/1999

On repeated times braking at lights and stop signs with an rough road surface the rear tires will skip, the abs system will buzz, the brake pedal will go down below the pressure I am applying and it feels like the truck will not stop. Once the truck has stopped the brake pedal is on the floor. When released it slowly comes back up. When accelerating away from this stop, it feels like the brakes are still applied. I have learned after many times of this happening I have to stop the truck, back up a bit and I can feel them release. I can drive normally then. When this happens, it is a intermittent problem, and I have reached my destination I can smell the brakes in the front as if they have been applied while driving. The rotors are now blue and the pads are now worn down to less than 30% of factory thickness. The dealer on three occasions has said they can not duplicate this problem. It is my driving habits on the brake wear and is common for this model to wear brakes like this at this mileage. I also can not stop this vehicle on a panic stop situation. Last month I had to stop the vehicle in a panic at 2-3 mph. I hit the brakes, the vehicle nosed down, the abs buzzed and the truck continued to roll into the car in front of me. The brake pedal was on the floor with no further travel left. I was standing on the pedal pulling up on the steering wheel and the truck would not stop. The next morning I took it back to the selling dealer durant autoplex. I could demonstrate this condition as could the service manager. He said this is not uncommon for this vehicle. He even said his demo was worse than mine. I filed a complaint with him and GMC. I had my truck fixed and ron bayers the service manager said he had the abs system check and double checked and found no fault with any component in the abs system. He said there have been many complaints from owners with similar vehicle that can not stop them under a panic stop even at hwy speeds. What do I do? please advise.
