36 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/18/2005

I was pulling into a parking spot at my sons baseball game when I applied the brakes ,and the pedal went almost to the floor and the anti-lock brakes started buzzing. Luckily I was going slow enough for the park to engage on the transmission. This is the only time this has happened on dry pavement going this slow. I had zero brakes and I was barely moving when they were applied. The brakes started working when I returned to the truck after the game. I called a local shop, and he said there was nothing he could do if they were working properly now. I called g. M. And had them log my complaint, they told me that I was the first one to complain. I am filing a complaint with NHTSA after learning of more of the odd brake failures from other GMC truck owners.

However, the recall does not include this model year vehicle although it has experienced the same problem as indicated on the recall. While he was pulling into a parking garage the brakes would not stop the vehicle. The brake failure caused vehicle to bump into a wall. The vehicle has not been to a service dealer to determine the cause of the problem.

47 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 11/01/2001

Brake system fails to stop vehicle when braking in normal manner (non-panic stop) at slow speeds on rough surface or when encountering "braking bumps" on asphalt roads. Brake pedal shudders briefly indicating abs is engaging, then brake pedal becomes soft and depresses fully with complete loss of stopping power until brakes are released and reappplied. Condition is both disconcerting and dangerous particularly on downhills - on numerous occasions accidents have been narrowly avoided or have been forced to drive vehicle off the road surface to avoid hitting others. Problem has been reported to dealer on multiple occasions, response is always that this is a "normal condition" (complete brake failure??). This problem happens routinely when driving this vehicle - total number of incidences would easily exceed 100 during the time I have owned this vehcile (once or twice a week for over a year).

48 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

While making a relatively fast stop on a fairly bumpy road, but without slamming on my brakes, the truck had slowed to about 30 or 35mph from approximately 50 mph when the brake pedal suddenly dropped and the brakes failed momentarily, and then caught again. When we finally stopped, I ended up half way through the intersection. Fortunately, it was a rural road and there was no other traffic and consequently there was no accident. It simply scared the heck out of me and my wife. My dealer indicates that there is no service bulletin on this type of problem, however he stated that their brake technician fixed a similar problem of the brake pedal suddenly failing when another of their customers was stopping his pickup truck while driving over railroad tracks. Additionally, my neighbor who drives a 2000 yukon xl, stated that he had a similar experience of his brakes suddenly and only momentarily failing while stopping from about 35mph with similar results to my experience of him ending up in the middle of the intersection. Fortunately, he too had no traffic and consequently no accident. I know that he also reported this to his dealer which coincidently is baird gm of ripon, wisconsin.

53 Brakes Failed problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/10/2000

- the contact's 1999 GMC Sierra was difficult to stop when applying the brakes. After taking the vehicle to a service center the contact found that the brakes were still not repaired properly. He read in a consumer magazine which stated that the 1999 GMC truck Sierra has the worse brakes. There was a recall on the 2000 GMC truck Sierra on the brakes, stating that the base brakes would remain fully functional, but the dynamic rear proportioning (drp) system, which optimizes front to rear brake balance would become inoperative. The contact believes that both model years had the same failure. While driving 40-50 mph and applying the brakes the brakes failed. Due to the brake failure the contact had problems with the tires as well. It felt as if the wheels were coming off when the contact was braking. Updated 2/22/2007 -.

Manufacturer offered no help for free. She said her husband has had a close call with a wall. He stopped in time. She said the vehicle had to be put in park once to get vehicle to stop. The truck was returned to the dealer the day after the recall work was performed to have the hubs replaced. , which the dealer told her that was causing the problem. Gm refused to pay for the hubs even though this was the cause of the documented problem in the recall. When the mechanic was pulling the vehicle into the shop, the brakes failed and he crashed.
