2 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 04/11/2021

My husband started the Terrain, backed out of garage & it died. It started again then. He was driving it 10 miles from our home & when driving on highway in the country, the car would not accelerate over 20 mph even as he pressed down the accelerator. When he reached his destination. He shut off the car & tried to restart it to move it & it started. Couple days later, it started to move in garage however when wanting to remove it from garage, the car would not start. Hasn't since. I was ckg oil periodically & when needed so there was still oil in it. Towed it to dealer & told us the timing chain was bad. Same as what GMC & chevy 2011 & 2012 cars are dealing with. Bad oil consumption. GMC nor our dealership who sold us this car 2 years ago will back their product. They shouldn't have sold is this car in the first place since there was already a law suit against Chevrolet & GMC for this problem. I still owe money on this car & no one will help with this dilemma.

The engine is burning oil. Losing oil quickly and no leak.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/29/2021

My vehicle eats up oil. I just recently found out about the excessive oil consumption investigation. My check engine light has been coming on. Sometimes when I fill it with gas it goes off. A week ago it came on and then as I was driving down a busy street my traction control light came on, then a message on the display saying service stabilitrack and engine power is reduced. I couldn't go over 35mph. I took it to oreily the following morning and the code p0175 showed fuel system too rich. I found a recall of an O2 sensor. I couldn't get into a gm shop for another week. Today they fixed the recall but told me the special coverage adjustment for the oil consumption was expired in 7/2020 for my vehicle. I chatted with gm online and they didn't answer all my questions. Even though I found the info on this here website about the investigation and the time limit and mileage on when I could get this problem fixed, gm would not explain in detail to clarify this info. It said 7 years and 6mos or 120k miles from when the vehicle was placed in service. They said third party sites like these aren't reliable. The shop mentioned I should just keep oil in it and that getting the pistons fixed would be $5k. My extended warranty does not cover and I was never notified about the investigation otherwise I would've never gotten the vehicle or at least got it fixed in said time limit.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/19/2021

GMC 2013 Terrain. Faulty engine make. Causing excessive oil consumption. Never alerted by any warning lights. Safety concern of engine possibly dying at any moment. GMC not willing to cover repair costs, even though there was a settlement reached, and they admitted over 40,000 customers not notified of engine issue. Please help!.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/18/2021

While backing out of driveway, the engine stopped without warning and vehicle would not restart. After being towed for service, we learned there was almost no oil left, causing the timing chains to fail and the engine was damaged beyond repair. We had driven the vehicle less than 12 hours prior and there were no warning lights such as low oil, check engine, etc. The vehicle has just under 78,000 miles on it and should have been 1,200 miles and 2 months from needing an oil change. This model year vehicle is known to be equipped with faulty piston ring assemblies which lead to excessive oil consumption. Additionally, there is no oil pressure sensor to alert the driver to the low oil; consequently, this misleads the owner into operating the vehicle with inadequate oil levels and causing engine damage. Complete engine failure can occur suddenly, creating an enormous safety hazard; we are lucky we were not driving at highway speeds or in heavy traffic at the time it occurred. Gm issued a special coverage adjustment, but it was not nearly adequate to cover the extent of damage that can and does occur as a result of this defect, leaving many drivers stuck with unreliable, unsafe vehicles or astronomically expensive repairs.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/26/2021

My vehicle had been having to common oil consumption meaning I checked the oil every time I got fuel. This last time I went to check the oil level the dipstick was under so much pressure it shot twenty feet into the air when the hood opened. I then drove the vehicle from the gas station back home and this time took the oil fill cap off and when I turned the cap a quarter turn it blew off into the air followed by burning hot oil droplets and steam. When I run the vehicle for any amount of time the oil drain back system builds more pressure then the cooling system eventually causing the vehicle to stall under load such as when taking off from a stop. When the vehicle does stall it will take from 2-10 minuets to restart.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/22/2021

Driving home from work last night in my car and when I got to my neighborhood, I rolled down the window a tad for some fresh air, and then noticed a weird cranking sound coming from under the hood. I continued home cautiously, noticing at this point that when I would accelerate the car would shake some and the lights would flicker some. I had not noticed anything on the 25 mile drive to work that morning and most of the drive home until slowing down from highway to neighborhood road. When I got to my carport I parked my car and got out, noticing the smell of burning oil. I quickly looked underneath and saw oil spilling, and looked behind my car to see a huge line of oil from where I had come through the neighborhood to the carport. Faint blue smoke was also visible, at this point I shut my car off. There was never a single indication light of any sort at any point in time. I have full service records I have always maintained my car every 5000 miles or less, last time being barely 2 months before this incident, $150 service and full checkup. 30 minutes later I came back out to inspect and everywhere on the underside of my car was dripping oil on the ground, a good 7x3 foot area with drips everywhere and main pool near the front. After doing some research I have seen many many claims describing this exact problem with the same year and model as me, as little as 8 days ago posting about it. I have never had any recalls or notices of this problem but I see class action law suites over this oil consumption problem online, however I see also see articles saying how over 41,000 vins were excluded and people are having extreme problems with this situation. Non-personal info as a young man with this being my first major purchase, having maintained my car as required and having paid $10980 I am extremely upset being out of transportation due to mechanical flaw on piston design.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/08/2021

I just found out that this vehicle has a recall concerning oil consumption. I just found out about this issue. I want to know what could be done to have my vehicle repaired.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/23/2020

Driving from work car was working fine. Came to a stop. Car started sounding like a diesel truck. Next stop car stopped all of a sudden. Towed it home then to the shop. Mechanic asked me when I did the last oil change. Oil change was done at dealership 8 weeks ago. Oil had burned completely and caused the engine to fail. I now need to replace completely. $5k on a 6 year old car with 84k miles.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

Car is burning excessive amount of oil. Now the engine has seized up.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 11/24/2020

Radio stsyem went out, wiped blade motor defective, cam shaft sensors went out due to oil consumption, sensor actuator went out due to oil consumption, car would die while driving because of oil consumption/cam shaft error, engine is consuming to much oil-per engine oil study done by my dealership.

13 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 11/10/2020

I have been having oil consumption problems for the 11 months before the engine quit working as soon as I pulled out of a shopping center. I contacted gm to see if anything could be done. I had the car towed to a certified dealer to have them look at it and gm knew I had 124,000 mi on the engine. They still wanted me to bring it to them, for them to let me know they weren't going to help or pick up anything. I owe 9,000 on the car and thats what they want to charge me for a new engine. Tried going to another dealership to try to trade car in and they want me to pay almost 600 a month compared to my 225 now! no help where ever I go. . . Before, I went to dealer and gm I tried to fix it by changing out alternator, spark plugs, new battery and q new timing chain. When, we took top of engine off we found the fourth of July under the hood with roller bearing and rockers exploded everywhere along with the chain guard was wedged between gear and chain.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/03/2020

Own 2014 GMC Terrain with 56k miles on it, have had the car two years and have had multiple issues. First incident, was driving on highway in rain wipers just shit off. Almost wrecked trying pull off side of the road. Cost $300 for new motor. 2nd issue had to have a sensor replaced because car burned excessive oil in between oil changes, with no indication of low oil. Fried the sensor. 3rd issue, a repeat of the 2nd car would not pick up speed on highway, stabiltrak light came on, engine light came on, speedometer stopped immediately, I checked oil. Wasn't bone dry. Drove it straight home and was in even worse condition reversing into driveway. The oil exploded all over driveway, had it towed to private mechanic. Now I have to put a whole new engine in because gm is negligent with issuing recalls. Oil was leaking from rings all the way out to the exhaust. Faulty oil system and no warning fried my engine. Still owe 15,000$ in the car. This shouldn't ever happen on a car with so low miles and proper upkeep. Glad I'm stuck with 15k on a loan and a car that isn't reliable. Very disappointed.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

2013 GMC Terrain is burning excessive oil right after oil change while driving.

16 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 09/24/2020

My 2014 Terrain 2. 4 eco tech is using excessive oil consumption. I noticed there has been a recall and class action suit about this. This has also caused my timing chain to need replaced. I was driving to work a couple weeks ago and the engine entering low power mode notification came on. Along with the check engine light. And the stability control light came on.

17 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 09/20/2020

Iin early 2020 I reached out to 2 different GMC dealerships in regard to the recalls that existed on my vehicle's engine and oil consumption. The vehicle was overconsuming oil (I would track the oil levels) and needed excessive oil changes. The first dealership said that my vehicle didn't qualify for the recall due to mileage when I just received the recall notice. Second dealership wouldn't even look at vehicle. A few months later the engine blew, spilling oil everywhere. The engine now needs a total engine replacement. Had the dealerships agreed to look at the oil consumption issues the vehicle was having and had knowledge of the GMC recalls on the vehicle, I wouldn't have an inoperable vehicle and needed to purchase a new vehicle due to the engine issues not being covered that were common knowledge on these make/model/year vehicles. I have tried to work with dealerships as well as my the financer of the vehicle, GMC needs to acknowledge this issue and contact me. Since the warranty ended on the vehicle the 1st year I owned it, I have put nearly $10,000 into faulty parts and replacements on the vehicle that weren't "covered". I would like this situation investigated due to the safety issues the engine caused that were refused to be looked at and now the negative financial aspect it has caused me.

18 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 09/18/2020

Engine failure due to oil consumption no check oil light came on. Happens with no warning.

19 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 09/14/2020

Vehicle since purchase shows no signs of leak but goes through oil at about 1 quart every 1000 miles max. Check engine light always on, sensors indicate possible faulty piston rings. All were problems in later model GMC Terrains. When low on oil while driving and stationary all lights will light up and engine will go into reduced power mode saying to service stabilitrack. Car will not go above 10 mph when in this mode, sometimes unable to move at all. Goes away after more oil added. GMC Terrain had recalls on years 2010-2013 for all engine failure problems/repairs due to faulty piston rings/oil consumption issues. Numerous 2014-2016 GMC Terrains have claims of the reduced power/stabilitrack problem with no solution, I believe both problems are directly related.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 09/09/2020

Vehicle burned a significant amount of oil. Parts were replaced under a lawsuit, but nothing was done to fix the problem. It is only a matter of time before it starts happening again.

21 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 07/26/2020

Excessive oil consumption noted after oil change. Class action lawsuit recieved earlier this year proves that there is an issue with vehicle.

22 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 06/24/2020

My engine has had severe oil consumption issues. Within 2000 miles it will burn through roughly 4. 5 quarts of oil. This has happened on multiple occasions, and I have taken it to the dealership multiple times for this issue.

23 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 05/07/2020

Vehicle will sputter and die when slowing down or stopping. Has happened on freeway and normal driving. Took vehicle in and they let me know the timing chains, phaser and sensors are needed to resolve the issue. The problem is due to the engine burning too much oil. Vehicle will also not pass emissions testing.

24 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/29/2020

Pistons are bad and dealership at 16400 w colfax Ave,golden CO 80401 refuses to replace and oil consumption is to much. This problem has been going on for to long I was told by management after I paid for a high pressure fuel pump replacement if the problem was still there it would be fixed at no charge to me. Since then the manager quit and there is all differant staff and I have tried the corporate office still not resolved the only thing left is small claims court with a cap at $7000. I do not want to go to court if I really do not have to but if necessary I already have the paperwork to file. The dealership had my vehicle for over two weeks running diagnostics with no answer I asked them to check the pressure coming from the oil cap when you remove it. Nothing they just replaced the high pressure fuel pump and the problem is still there this vehicle is not safe to drive and can cause a wreck if not fixed. Loses power and gas pedal hits the floor I had to pay for a rental car the whole time the dealership had my vehicle because they said they would get us a loner vehicle and that never happened this will be my last attempt to resolve this matter out of court.

25 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Oil consumption is 1 quart every 500 miles the dealership located at 16400 w colfax Ave golden CO had are vehicle for two weeks running diagnostics tests and using a on board computer hooked up to the vehicle with no answer for why the vehicle was losing power and gas pedal going to the floor with no codes pulling up as they mimicked the problem with a on board computer hooked up to the vehicle while a gm tech test drove the Terrain this is a major problem for driving on the highway its like going 45 mph on the highway and slamming on you'r brakes then the vehicle kicks back into gear. My wife is a nurse and needs her vehicle to get to and from work especially with covid-19 if she cant make it to work people could die covid is nothing to play around with and nurses are not allowed to call in while covid is going on this problem with this Terrain needs to be investigated if a gm certified tech does not know what is going on with this vehicle who would.

26 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/13/2020

The engine in my 2013 GMC Terrain burns excessive amounts of oil. I'm constantly adding oil the the engine. Apparently the new engine that was used in this vehicle is not working correctly. I don't have warrant left and I'm going to be stuck with a blown engine that is clearly the manufacturers error. I will never or will my family ever purchase another GMC vehicle. Pure junk!!!!.

27 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

28 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 02/07/2020

I purchased the vehicle in March 2018. From the date of purchase, the service engine and/or change oil lights would turn on. Every time I took the vehicle to my mechanic, it needed oil. In January 2020, I got a notice from GMC about the settlement of a lawsuit regarding vehicle oil consumption. I took the vehicle to my local GMC and the manager read the "notice of approval of class action settlement and claim form" that was sent to me. The lawsuit requires GMC to pay for repairs or reimburse customers for the repairs. My vehicle had not had the necessary repairs done to it, so the manager instructed me to approve the necessary repairs and pay for them out of pocket because GMC would reimburse me. The repairs were completed on February 7, 2020. I followed all the guidelines provided to me by GMC in order to get the reimbursement. I mailed documents to them a week after the repairs were completed, months before the deadline of may 16, 2020. After waiting over a month and not getting reimbursed, I called GMC customer services (1-866-790-5600) on April 11, 2020. I was informed by GMC customer service to expect a reimbursement check for repairs and rental car fees within two weeks. After not receiving the reimbursement, I called again in June and July 2020 and given the same information-wait. This continued throughout the summer. The delay was blamed on covid-19. I called again in late September 2020, and they instructed me to email all the documents and that the check would arrive in two weeks. On September 30, 2020, I emailed all the documents to GMC. After waiting another two weeks, I called them and they again said it would come in two weeks. On November 10, 2020, I sent another email asking for the reimbursement check. A week later, I got a letter stating I did not qualify for reimbursement because the time had passed/expired.

29 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/24/2020

The car has oil consumption issues which is causing it to stall. My car stalled while driving in traffic which could very easily cause a bad accident gm is aware of the issue but won't fix it. I am already on my second engine do to this excessive oil consumption.

30 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/23/2020

Vehicle has 85000 miles and needs new timing chain due to burning oil. Quoted $2200-$2800 for repair. Rough riding, wants to stall at lower speeds, slow downs and stops. Still owe on this vehicle, bought from dealership not even two years ago.

31 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/19/2020

While driving on the highway, in the rear view mirror, I noticed a cloud of smoke. The vehicle then proceeded to lose acceleration, so I pulled over. Let me note that there was no previous warning light and that the oil was just changed at the end of Dec. 2019 (receipt available). Upon pulling over, the car flashed "oil pressure low - stop engine". The temperature outside was 13 and my two children where in the car; 4 and 2. Not ideal conditions for the car to stop!!!. The car was towed to my home, by my insurance company. Upon examination, it was discovered that a rod went through the engine block. There was oil everywhere!! it was all over my driveway, (another note - this is the first time I have ever seen oil on my driveway from this vehicle), all over the back of my vehicle, and all over the underneath of the car. The next 24 hours we worked on finding a new engine. However, when I arrived home, there was a letter in the mail . Claim number 1900010 - berman et al v. Gm. The claim stated that gm was to cover all expenses for repairs with a 2. 4l engine, exhibiting engine oil consumption, due to piston ring wear. So the vehicle was then taken to a gm dealer; because the issue with the rod was determined by a jammed piston/lack of oil. After review, the dealer stated that the piston ring did not cause the rod to break. That the rear main seal went out. In one minute, no warning, the car that I have only had for three years and still owe on, blew! according to my research, there was a gm service bulletin 14482 in March 2015 for the exact same issue. I purchased my vehicle in Feb of 2017, clearly no idea. I think this is absolute bs that gm is not held accountable to repair all know issues in these vehicles! people spend their hard earned money and put their families in them with the expectations that they are purchasing a solid, safe vehicle!.

32 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/18/2019

2010 GMC Terrain with v6 loss of power, engine codes timing issue, camshaft sensor fault, crankshaft sensor fault. Stabil-track fault. Rough idle, oil consumption. The list goes on. This is a common thing with these engines and gm has done nothing. This has been going on with this vehicle for awhile. Stay away from gm vehicles they do not stand behind there products, I will be buying a Ford and I will tell everyone I know!.

The contact owns a 2011 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that at start up and while driving the check engine warning light illuminated and remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. 34 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

Multiple times my GMC stalls while in movement. Does it when I am making turns driving slow speeds or backing up. Multiple times it has resulted in my vehicle almost being hit. Big problem I am having as well is that oil seems to burn fast. I get my oil changes regularly but have to go back into shop between oil changes for them to put more oil in as its burning out so quickly. I am not leaking oil at all!! these two things have been a constant problem being a mom I am scared to have m uh kids in the car that it may malfunction while they are in it and result in an accident. Recalls should be in place to fix these problems as they are serious problems.
