I bought it in June 2020. Used excessive oil. I kept adding oil. I thought it was an oil leak and took it in to firestone to get fix. As I was almost there the engine light came on and was making a loud noise under the hood. First warning of anything was wrong, no other lights showed on dash indicating a problem. I was driving when this happened. Firestone said really bad oil leak that damaged timing chain and lower engine. They said I need to replace the engine. Why didn't I get any warning lights indicating there was a problem before my engine was damaged due to excessive oil usage. I see this same issue has happened to other owners with this vehicle. I was driving on the highway and could have been in an accident.

Car has started excessively using oil and ringing sound from engine. Roaring sound when it starts. I purchased car Sep '17, with 125k miles. Received a letter today may 8, 2020 saying this is an issue. Called gm says this service warranty has expired, but I just received letter today. Says previous owner probably received letter but that doesn't help current owner. I had previously visited a gm dealer 3 times and this was never mentioned to me. I want my repairs covered because someone dropped the ball and it wasn't me. It is not fair that I wasn't notified sooner I would have brought it in to be checked.

Out of nowhere my car just died when I got to work, and then again twice on my way home. I took it to get tested the next day and was told it was the timing chain. I drove it 3 blocks to a dealership, and on the way the engine light came on and heard a loud noise. Prior to this, no indicator lights of any kind came on, no strange noises, no warning whatsoever. Diagnosis was that I needed a new engine. With only 92,000 miles on vehicle, my engine is now ruined (with no warning at all), and I have to come up with thousands of dollars to fix it. How has this not been a recall situation at this point given all of the complaints for the same thing - sudden engine issues resulting in engine replacement with less than 100,000 miles. Gm please do something to make this right.

I purchased my 2013 GMC Terrain on Nov 2, 2018. I had the oil changed less than 2 weeks later. On Dec 9, 2018, after leaving church, my husband & I stopped at the store. When we got ready to leave, I started my car & it made a loud noise so I turned it off. I tried to crank it again & it would just spin. My husband got out to check the oil & found no oil on the dipstick. It was 2 qrts low. No warning or anything. After having it towed, twice, we are being told it has jumped time. Not only would we need to replacing the timing change, but possibly the valves as well. My husband contacted a local dealership & was told, due to complaints, the dealership can replace the motor & GMC will pay them back. However, my car is 1,000 miles over the motor warranty or whatever. They are recommending me get another engine to put it. So, with the engine, plus labor, I am looking at $4. 000 I don't have to spend. My 2nd payment just came out of my account for a car I can't drive, nor have the money to fix. The oil level is most likely the cause of the timing chain breaking. Obviously GMC knows there's a problem & this needs to be addressed. My car was sold as is, no additional warranty. Love the car & would rather have it fixed, but may be letting to go back & go against my credit, because of this. Very disappointed GMC.
Vehicle's engine make loud noise when stationary and in motion. Never has made this sound before. All recalls that were listed which were the high fuel pump and carbon monoxide have been completed yet no change in vehicle. Dealership stated that it mayexhaust and catalyst converter are the issues. After doing some research online, I've discovered that other owners of this vehicle along with owners of the equinox have the same issue.

Extremely disappointed with my 2013 GMC Terrain. It has a 2. 4 cylinder engine that consumes too much oil between oil changes. A technical service bulletin was issued by gm for the problem but they have not done a full recall yet. Vehicle was stalling due to low oil issues. Intake solenoid had to be replaced because of low oil levels. Transmission fluid leaked from trans torque converter seal, left rear wheel hub had to be replaced due to bearings going bad all with just 52k miles. The engine specifically in my vehicle is a safety hazard/concern for anyone with a family. My wife is a nanny and does not drive the vehicle aggressively. I had driven this vehicle not very many miles on a new fresh oil change and the next time I went to check my oil the dipstick had no oil on it!! I was furious because there was not a light that indicator that came on in my vehicle to tell me I had low oil or anything!! also have a problem with the loud noise of tires when going down highway . . I did like this vehicle when I first got it but ever since then I have been disappointed in what is going on . .
Tl the contact owns a 2012 GMC Terrain. The contact stated while her husband was driving 70 mph, the vehicle started making an abnormal sound before stalling. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the engine was consuming an extreme amount of engine oil. The vehicle was taken to nimnicht Buick GMC (11503 philips hwy, jacksonville, FL 32256, (904) 733-1616) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
As I was driving home from work on 2/1/18 on i94 at 72 mph, my car starting sputtering and smoking. It then started making a very loud noise and my warning light came on saying to shut off my engine. The engine shut off and I had to coast to the shoulder of the interstate. I called roadside assistance who sent a tow truck and towed me to my mechanic's garage. The mechanic looked at it the next morning and advised there was a hole in the engine block and all the oil leaked out of the hole, leaving oil all over the undercarriage of my vehicle. I filed an insurance claim, the insurance adjustor looked at it Monday and deemed it to be mechanical failure. I have 110,000 miles on the vehicle.

While I was driving 35-45 miles per hour the truck turned off on its own so I parked truck on the side of the road. I waited a few minutes and tried to turn vehicle on again, it turned on again and I continued driving 20-30 per hour. Then after being stopped at a red light when it turned green I stepped on the gas and there was a loud sound plus we felt like it had jumped.
Stalling when turning, coming up to stop lights and going down hills, engine making loud noises and excessive oil changes. Engine is now unoperable.
The contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. While driving various speeds, the check engine and control assist warning indicators illuminated. The speed decelerated below 10 mph independently. In addition, the engine made an abnormal sound. The contact managed to drive the vehicle home slowly. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,332.
Takata recall, I thought that I had excessive oil leakage because there was no oil, when I just had a oil change the day before, but it had to be a excessive engine oil consumption, on my way from work I heard a very loud noise from my engine, and and a pop, on my dashboard was signaling oil pressure is low - stop engine, throughout the hold ordeal there was smoke coming into the car, when I was able to get to car dealer ship, I was charged $3400. 00 to have the car fix. Then I receive a letter from GMC stating that they were doing a recall on 2012 Terrain relating to the same issue that was listed in the letter that was sent to me. They reject my reimbursement due to the fact that they saying the oil had to burning on the engine, and not excessive oil leakage, when in fact there was burning oil on my engine, which I feel cause the smoke within my vehicle, also the manager at mike anderson also said GMC rejected my claim due to the part numbers then match up to part numbers they have listed on the recall, when I view the list, it did list different number but the parts was the same, the car was in motion I was on the highway 294 going east to merrillville indiana, which almost caused me to have a accident in which I happen to avoid.
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 GMC Terrain. The contact stated while driving the vehicle at various mph the vehicle unexpectedly would shake with a loud abnormal noise. The vehicle was taken to a dealer (frank's Gmc325 orient way, lyndhurst, NJ 07071) for a diagnostic exam and the results were the vehicle failed due to oil consumption due to piston ring ware. However the check engine light was illuminated. The manufacturer was not made aware of this failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000 tp.
Engine burning oil rapidly making loud noise had to get a new engine from GMC and had it installed at the dealership. Power steering locked twice took it to dealership they stated that the battery cable was not connecting properly and made the adjustment. Was working fine for 1 month and now the power steering locked again and I almost hit a wall and pedestrian while entering a parking garage, I am taking it back to the dealership.
This is the second time that the vehicle has stalled at a stop. I am seriously concerned with the safety of my wife. What if this happens and she involved in a serious accident because her vehicle basically shuts off and leaves her very vulnerable? what if the vehicle stalls during driving? GMC is no help, I have called and all they say is there is no recall. I get on their website and it does not work. We have had trouble with the ignition, having to have it repaired and also the timing chain making horrible noise. The latest incident really concerns me as it may place my wife in serious danger. Please help!.
Tl- the contact owns a 2013 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that the service engine indicator illuminated and an abnormal noise was heard. In addition, the instrument panel shorted out due to an electrical failure, which also caused all the gauges and warning indicators not to function. The dealer (carlsbad Buick GMC Cadillac, 5334 paseo del norte, carlsbad, CA 92008, (760) 438-5311) was notified. The dealer found failure codes p0496, p0171, and p0174, which detected pressure in the evap system. The dealer stated that more diagnostic testing would be needed to determine a remedy. The vehicle was also taken to suburban Cadillac of costa mesa (2600 harbor blvd, costa mesa, CA 92626, (877) 844-8058) to schedule an appointment for diagnostic testing. The contact received a document that did not specifically indicate that it was a manufacturer recall. While traveling down the highway, check engine light came on and display read power steering problem. After getting off the highway and coming to a stop at a redlight, the car would not drive when the light turned green. It had no power, even though it was running and engine was idling hard and making a terrible noise. Car was towed to dealer and the fixed the cam actuator. Car drove fine for another 2,000 miles and same issued occurred. It is currently being repaired. . . Again. Will file another complaint when I know what the issue is.
I was going about 40 mph about to get on the freeway, when my car begin a loud noise, shaking, and dropped speed to about 20 mph. The dashboard said something also about no power, no matter how much I pushed the gas pedal, car would not accelarate. Instead of getting on freeway I pulled over to a gas station. I cut the car off and left off for a minute. I cut it back on and was running normal. I immediately went to the dealership where I was told there was a recall on the throttle body and they would replace for me. The problem is that no one bother to notify me, and if I had not had this problem might not had known.
About a month after purchasing this brand new vehicle, there were several times that after starting the car & putting it into gear, it stalled. There has also been times that after driving it for a while & coming to a stop sign, then getting ready to pull out into traffic, it either stalls or hesitates. There were a few close calls where there could have been a major accident. Taking this to the dealer did nothing. They said they have heard of this before, but unless it did it at their dealership, they couldn't fix the problem. Another issue I have had is that many times the transmission doesn't shift properly & it revs up more than it should before actually shifting & when it does, there is a major clunk. I have owned many cars in my lifetime, this car always on startup, makes a terrible noise at first which to me sounds like it's not getting any oil or that the bearings have a problem. That noise goes away after a few seconds. Another issue I have, as do all other Terrain owners, is that the sticker on the window from gm when buying this car, stated that this car would get 23 mpg city, & 32 mpg highway. Most all my miles are highway miles, & the most I ever get is 22 mpg. This was the main reason for buying this car in the first place. I think gm should be held accountable for this grossly mis-representation of what I would be getting for gas mileage. I am not that wealthy where I can just go out & buy a new car every year, but am fearful that with the car stalling out whenever it feels like, that I may have an accident. I am also not thrilled with the noise it make when I start it, & wonder how long before it doesn't run. I now have 36,000 miles on it with these issues, my last vehicle that I traded in for this had 250,000 trouble free miles. Gm needs to buy this back, or lifetime warranty on motor along with free gas to make up for the 10 mpg I'm not getting.
