1 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/24/2021

I took my vechile for a recall, and they found it also had a cracked exhaust manifold. After researching on the internet I found that this is a very common problem with the gm 2. 4 engine. Why hasn't a recall been issued for this problem, I would call this a serious safety issue as exhaust gasses can enter the vechile from the crack.

2 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/01/2021

My exhaust manifold has a crack/broken in it. It started out with a little noise, but, now it is roaring under the hood. Exsessive amount of exhaust gasses and smell into the cabin, and has caused numerous headaches from noise and smell. During start up, driving around town, on the highway, in the hot or cold.

3 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 02/03/2021

11/9/2020 the engine light came on and the car randomly died so I had to have it towed to the dealership. They replaced both intake and cam sol valves , replaced the exhaust manifold, both ho2 sensors, heat shield, cat converter and high pressure fuel pump. This was all done at 121617 miles. Had no issues until 125,400 on 2/3/2021 the car randomly died while driving but I made it to work. On the way to get it checked out it made a loud noise and died resulting in being pulled out of the street and to the shop. They informed me that the timing chain came apart and the engine now needs to be replaced. It's 400 miles out of the extended warranty and the repairs in November totaled $3023. 17 of which I had to pay $1,100 and now the car is inoperable and they want $7000 to install a new engine. I have found since this happened that this is a common problem that gm is aware of with the 4 cylinder engine. I kept up with oil changes and used synthetic oil.

4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 11/19/2020

On 08/05/2020 I was sold this vehicle with a cracked manifold. Upon replacement of the manifold it was discovered that two manifold bolts were seared on the engine block side. After consulting my mechanic and another, I was advised that 1) to repair the engine has to be lifted as the space between the firewall and the engine is too small to make repairs without lifting the engine ( manufacture defect) . Further, it was advised to me that completely sealing the manifold could lead to a fire in the catalytic converter because these engines run hot. As I expressed that this vehicles antifreeze level is not stable as I have experienced with other vehicles. In other words this vehicle burns up antifreeze quicker than I've seen occur in other vehicles. After researching the topic it was discovered by consumer reports that these vehicles have major defective engines with repairs to manifold being notorious. And to have to have the engine lifted each time is unreasonably costly. And I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle if a defective engine runs hot and there's a risk of fire. This is exacerbated by the fact of the tiny space between the engine and firewall within the vehicle.

7 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/19/2020

Started having a noise both cold and hot, had it inspected to find out the exchaust manifold is cracked broken in several areas and exchaust flex pipe is bad. Car has just over 100000 miles on it. These are around the area of the catalytic converts. Gm says not under warranty I have been told this is a common problem with all 2. 4 4 cylinder.

8 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2010 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 12/02/2019

In sept. 2017, the dealer fixed the catalytic converter b/c it was under a "special warranty" for free however I had to pay $582 to replace the cracked manifold which caused the converter issue. I recently went to the dealership b/c the check engine light came on again, the catalytic converter is still under warranty and they have to fix the oil consumption problem the is under a "special coverage" and again I was told that I had to pay for another cracked manifold. I asked what causes it and why and was told they did not know but I believe it must have to do with the original catalytic converter issue. I understand that there is a special coverage to fix the cc however something must be causing it to fail and gm is aware of it.

9 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 05/15/2019

Burns oil, which gm will cover to fix but will not cover the issues that happens when oil is burnt and what it caused. Had to replace exhaust manifold, O2 sensor, catalytic converter and cam shaft senors; these I had to pay for out of pocket. Not sure exactly when it happened but was middle of 2019. Went to GMC about how to get resolved on an issue that they caused that I had to pay for, which first resulted in a 1 yr engine warranty which they pulled with out my knowledge, then after a complaint to the bbb the best they could offer was a $1000 coupon for a new car. Gm should cover those other issues since its an issue they know and fixed.

10 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2012 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 04/13/2019

Engine blew in vehicle due to excessive oil consumption from piston ring damage. Car had only 95k miles. Vehicle was being driven at 20 mph, bucked and turned off completely. We notified gm dealership at every oil change of excessive consumption. We put in a quart of oil every 1000 miles . A consumption test was never recommended . We then could not do one as the engine blew. Also damaged exhaust manifold , O2 sensors and cat converter . We have also replaced the manifold and sensors and have the cat converter repair this week. All told over 5000$ in damages that we have paid out of pocket. There was no recall for the piston rings. Some vehicles have since been issued a letter indicating that emissions issues due to excessive oil consumption would be repaired at no cost. Our car apparently did not meet that criteria . A lawsuit against gm has been litigated and won for the excessive consumption . We are part of the class action however have already been denied once for unknown reason. We resubmitted 3 months ago and have heard nothing. It is criminal that these vehicles have not been completely recalled .

11 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 01/21/2019

I left the house and the engine started making loud jack hammer noises, the warning light flashed engine power reduced . The temperature outside was below zero that day , however, I had no other warning lights on my dash before the engine power reduced light . The engine suddenly became very very loud and stopped functioning. I called a tow truck and had the vehicle towed to a local mechanic, I was told that the rear manifold failed and "blew" out of the vehicle . Upon review of the website carcomplainta. Com I discovered that for my year, make and model this is a common issue that I was unaware of . There is a gm service bulletin 14882 that covers this issue and that I needed to file a complaint with you . I was told that the entire engine would need to be replaced immediately. I have no way to afford this and if gm is aware of this situation they need to make the needed repairs.

13 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2015 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 10/24/2018

The manifold and the catalytic converter is cracked and emitting hazardous carbon monoxide inside the cabin of the car. For close to 2 months my husband has been driving the car like this and we have taken it to 2 mechanics and finally found the cracks. My husband has been getting sick from the carbon monoxide. It is a blessing he is still alive. According to online google searches this is a well known issue in this vehicle. The smell is strong especially when he uses the remote starter and when the car is in motion and stationary.

20 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2013 GMC Terrain

Failure Date: 03/17/2015

Less than a month ago, while driving on interstate 95 in the left lane during rush hour the engine blew on a 2 year old GMC Terrain. How this is at all possible I have no clue, but luckily enough I was able to safely coast over to the right shoulder and await for a tow truck. Below is the background information, as well as the headache I have had to undergo since this happened. -1 month prior to the engine being blown I had taken the car in for a 5,000 mile check-up -night before the incident there was a fluttering noise heard from the engine, so planned on taking to sheehan the next morning at approximately 9:30 am on 3/17/2015 was driving on interstate 95 in the left lane during rush hour and the rpms dropped to zero -witness something that looked like oil leaking from the engine was told to sheehan Buick GMC where they looked at it and the next day reported that the engine blew, a rod to the piston snapped and tore a hole through the side of the engine -was told by service manager that when the engine went it "grenade" inside and resulted in longer to fix and replacing more parts like a manifold. -since it was fixed I had no other choice but to take the car back I left the shop and got on interstate 95 for about 10 miles when I noticed the check-engine light on immediately returned to sheehan and took the loaner back -was told now had to replace the fuel injectors -2 weeks after that week repaid engine light on again for a wire harness.

21 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2011 GMC Terrain

The contact owns a 2011 GMC Terrain. The contact stated that the tail pipe overheated while driving 50 mph, causing the rear cargo carrier basket to catch on fire. The fire spread to the bumper and the contact was able to extinguish the fire but the fire department was also present. The vehicle was taken to a local body shop for repair. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 25,232.
