Honda CR-V owners have reported 44 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda CR-V based on all problems reported for the CR-V.
The contact owns a 2012 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel started shaking, and the vehicle vibrated abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle had previously received an alignment and tire rotation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the drive shaft might need to be replaced, but the vehicle needed a more extensive diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to technical service bulletin: 15-076 (vibration while driving at highway speeds); however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

When turning sharp the rear end makes a grinding sound and will jerk. I believe this is the differential grinding. Was told it just needed serviced at 17,000. I did this and problem was not fixed.

While being driven at 55-60 mph on a 4 lane highway the driver side rear suspension control arm broke free from the unibody causing the rear tire to twist sideways and lodge in the wheel well. The driver side rear axle pulled free from the rear differential due to detachment. The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, but used both lanes and the vehicle width shoulder of the road to due so. Had another vehicle been close by an accident would have resulted. The crv had been nys inspected 2 months prior with no signs of an impending problem. Pictures are attached showing the detached driver side and also the intact passenger side. After taking pics showing an intact mount on the passenger side a hammer was used to check the structure and it was possible to open up a hole on that side as well. The vehicle was driven in NY during the winter, thus road salt was encountered. The only part of the crv affected by rust was the mounting location of both rear control arms due to an area where moisture and salt can enter, but not escape. The rest of the undercarriage and exterior body were rust free. Honda was contacted, but unwilling to take any action due to age and miles on vehicle. The case# and last correspondence with Honda is included--no response from Honda.

Especially when cold under light acceleration, the vehicle will shudder. I think it is when it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. Took it to the dealer for normal service and asked them to check this issue. Went to pick it up and was told they confirmed the issue. They told me the issue was reported in later models and a possible fix was to change the transmission and rear differential fluid and update the software. It would not be covered by the Honda 5 year/60k mile powertrain warranty or the extended warranty purchased when we bought the car new. I was charged $88. 00 just for them to confirm the issue and also Honda was aware of the issue. Since they said it would only possibly fix the car at a cost to me of around $300. 00 and there were no fault codes, I opted to forego the procedure. After I got home I found numerous reports of this problem on user forums. I also found a link to print the Honda service bulletin sb 15-086, dated August 18, 2016. That was stated for crv model years 2012-14. Hopefully the problem will not result in a catastrophic failure, causing injury or damage. Honda evidently does not believe it could or there would be a recall.

Bought a 2012 Honda Cr-v 8/2015. Dealer service was on 10/15/2015. Advised 2 change differential fluid (57,000 mi) charged to change differential fluid, but there is a judder when accelerating in low gears. It stops when easing up on the gas pedal. It typically occurs when the vehicle shifts (automatic transmission) between the 1st and 2nd gears. The only way to stop it is by removing foot from gas pedal or accelerating car quickly to higher speed. The issue affects the ability to safely accelerate to proper speed. Begins when accelerating from a stopped position all the way up until car reaches about 40-45 miles per hour. Occurs on all types of road conditions but is very pronounced when driving on a flat surface. Approx. May, 2019 I was stopping 4 a light-car accelerated on own-put in neutral, but rpm shot up again. Braked and put it back in drive. Honda diagnosis found no defects . Learned of recalls concerning this problem& the costly fix. Addressed/Honda universe in toms river. Richard mootz, service direc. Says they can't help me. It hasn't been resolved and judder continues. I am up to date with all my oil changes and maintenance. And still have apprx. $4,000. Loan to pay on crv.
Soon after purchase, I noticed a distinct vibration throughout the car during idle and moderate acceleration at nearly all speeds when rpm was at 1800-2200. Dealer service people did not know the cause, indicated a number of other customer complaints, guessed it originated in computers associated with the transmission or differential, could not fix it, claimed it is not a safety matter, advised to contact Honda customer service, said it is a priority at Honda, and mentioned numerous reports and complaints on blogs and tv (7 on your side wjla, Feb 25, 2015) the vibration is unpleasant, annoying and distracting. Over time the shuddering may develop into a safety matter. Please put pressure on Honda to research the problem and make a fix or restitution as soon as they can and certainly before injuries and deaths occur because of it.

I started to notice a croaking (sounds like a frog) noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when lightly accelerating from a stop in drive or reverse and right before I come to a complete stop. I have had this vehicle for a year, which I purchased new and this sound started after 11 months of ownership. I took my vehicle to the dealership where it was determined that the noise is coming from a noisy rear differential pump motor (part of the awd system) per a manufacturers tech line summary article. Per the dealership and manufacturer, the manufacturer is aware of this problem and is currently working on a fix, but does not have one to date. Manufacturer has instructed dealerships not to replace any rear differential pump motors at this time.
I bought at 2014 crv end of sept/oct of 2013. Upon the first snow fall I drove the vehicle and had immediate problems. The car was not getting any traction, it was sliding around going down hills and upon trying to drive up hills it would stop without even trying to go up. It would stop and wheels would spin, the rear end spun to the side and I could not get anywhere. The amber awd lights came on and flashed, combination of both scenarios. I finally got it into the dealership as the problem got worse. The rear differential has been deemed defective (overheating issue to point of almost glowing and fluid overheated). The other problem I have had is that if the car was put into 1st or 2nd gear to aid slowing down on a hill, even from a stopped position, it would not respond. The car sped up going down the hill in first gear to approximately 40mph even with the brake on, which would not engage and the anti-lock brakes were engaging and not even trying to stop the vehicle. The car behaved the same even if on flat ground that had even a dusting of snow or even a little gravel. The dealership gave me a courtesy 2014 same year as mine, it drove much better and much safer than mine performed after the first 2 days. I feel the car has more issues than just the differential and is a major safety hazard as the last 1-2 weeks the car has had no control in anything other than dry roads. It has almost wrecked more than once due to these issues. This vehicle is 3. 5 months old and had under 10,000 miles on it and all of this has gone wrong since the beginning.
I purchased a 2013 crv in the beginning of 2013 with VIN # [xxx]. With about 6,000 miles after the first oil change, the vehicle starts making a creaking noise when pushing and releasing the brake. I went to the dealer on 11/11/13. A technician was able to duplicate the problem. The second visit to the dealer is on 11/25/2013. A master technician was able to duplicate the problem and identify the noise does not come from the braking system but from the rear differential system. The dealer made a phone call to Honda tech line and was told to hold on the fix and wait for Honda to do more investigation. The dealer said Honda will send me a letter in the near future. I waited for the response from both dealer and Honda for more than a month and heard nothing. The dealer told me to contact Honda directly. I called Honda in end of December 2013, and heard back from them in 1/3/2014, a Honda representative named [xxx] in 1-800-999-1009 [xxx] called me back and told me that Honda is not going to fix the problem and replace any parts but will do more investigation. He mentioned that the investigation will last for 2 to 3 years. Also Honda is not considering the rear differential system is failed or defective, because the computer did not notify them such part is failed. [xxx] refused to give me more information and did not want to issue a statement or letter to me to describe the problem and what further investigation will Honda do. [xxx] keeps saying that he is not an engineer to answer any technical related questions. The decision made by Honda is no repairing or replacement to any part to fix this problem. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Just before coming to a full stop or accelerating from a stop a grinding noise coming from the rear of the all wheel drive vehicle. Dealer identified problem and is to replace the rear differential.
2012 Honda crv makes a rear end hydraulic noise from the rear differential that has gotten progressively worse during the first year of ownership. The sound is made as the vehicle is coming to a stop and once again when the vehicle starts. It is a safety concern that had been reported to Honda in four separate instances begin when the vehicle had 2,497 and the last event was at 7,800.
Driveability issues created by rear differential. Requires accelerated and expensive maintenance at intervals above and beyond factory recommendations. Would appear to be a design reliability issue that should be addressed by Honda beyond simply shifting the burden on to owners. . . . . Updated 10/26/11.

I have a rumbling, grinding noise that is due to excessive and premature wear on the rear differential of my 2000 Honda crv awd. I have changed the fluid, but it seems that this is a common problem that should not be occuring in so many owners.

My complaint is with the rear differential. I have had to replace the fluid several times since I have had it, due to low fluid. I now have a "case halve" in the rear differential is leaking. A very costly expense. I have researched this problem online and it seems that a majority of Cr-v owners are having the same problem.
2008 crv with about 25,000 miles has a turn noise at the rear end. It was told by dealer the differential fluid need be replaced.

I own 2006 Honda crv. My complaint is about rear differential fluid. The owner's manual states that rear differential fluid needs to be changed every 60,000-90,000 miles. First time had to replace it at 19000 miles because of the noise when the wheels were turned right/left at low speeds. The same problem resurfaced at 53000 miles again. The dealership pushes a $250 dollar procedure (rear differential change 2 times and burnishing the clutches) to fix the problem as the vehicle is not under the warranty anymore. The dealer also recommends changing the rear differential every 15000 miles. Honda misled its customers with its low maintannace schedule.
Rear differential noise when backing and turning, could escalate to a dangerous handling of the car. Second time that I have to take my Honda Cr-v 2007 to the dealer for the same reason.
This is a 2007 Honda crv_ex-l. There was no accident involved. This complaint is in regards to the differential problem with the crv. This vehicle has only 28,000 miles on it but is 3 1/2 years old. Started have a noise problem when turning at slow speeds. Brought into dealer and they told us the differential lubricant needed to be replaced at a cost of $125. Dealer would not stand behind the problem even though car had extended warranty, because it was past 36 month. Service rep said there was a service advisory posted internally for this problem that said the lubricant needed to be changed every 15,000 to 20,000 miles, even thought the manual say 60,000. No notification was sent to owners of this advisory. Had to pay to have it fixed, but do not know if there was internal damage and service rep did not know.
The contact owns a 2006 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that when driving and attempting a sharp turn, the vehicle would exhibit an unusually loud noise. She also noticed a shuddering noise from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility for an oil change and the contact was informed that the rear differential was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The current and failure mileage was approximately 52,000.
I have a 2007 crv, 45000 miles on it, and I experienced a moaning or groaning comes from the rear differential when making a sharp or tight turn at low speeds.
Honda crv 2006 awd rear differential needs service every 30,000 minimum. This is contrary to the specifications in the owners manual.
Rear differential in 2006 Honda crv made a grinding noise when backing up or turning.
2007 Honda Cr-v 4wd, rear differential noise. It starts right at the beginning at slow sharp turn. I thought all 4wd drive are the same. The dealer service people never mentioned any problem when we did regular service until it ran out of the warranty. Now they "noticed" the noise and advised us to change the fluid. I suspected if this would solve the problem since I started noticing it right from the beginning. When I checked online, I found it is a bigger problem.
We are a two car ownership family and one of the vehicle is a 2007 Honda crv and around 40,000 miles the car began vibrating at speeds between 38 to 43 mph. Contacted my Honda dealer, lee Honda, and they are vehement in stating that there is no issue with crv and the vibration maybe due to differential fluid needing flushing. Also dealer stated it may be due to front-end alignment. New tires were installed, front-end alignment done and what was an infrequent occurrence is not an everyday occurrence. Honda dealer is still adamant it maybe differential fluid needing flushing. My personal mechanic has found the bulletin that references the need to flush the differential, possibly twice. Why are they simply not upfront with their problem and address the issue. After several unsatisfied conversation with the dealership,I am having my mechanic do the work on 9/1/2010 and leave the Honda dealer chatting about "it's not a Honda issue" to himself. What poor customer relationship Honda advertises the dealership by not being honest about it's problem. It will be my last Honda. I am currently seeking to trade our other vehicle and it will not be Honda. When the vehicle was less then 6 months, we reported problems with the differential. The dealer replaced the differential per Honda's recommendation. Apparently there was a bulletin about the 2007 differential problem and it wasn't until our third visit to dealer that the problem was diagnosed as Honda bulletin, not a recall. Could these two issues be related?.
2006 Honda, Cr-v. Rear differential making noise, at slowed speeds while turning. Checked owners manual, it states to change at 90,000 miles. Checked on-line to see if this was a common complaint. Couldn't believe there is an actual service bulletin out for this and no notification from the dealership I bought it from or the dealership where I've had my oil changes done at. Really disappointed that I have to pay to replace the fluids so I don't have damage done to my car. Why is Honda not notifying there loyal customers about this problem, maybe covering the cost to replace the fluids that are "just breaking down prematurely" I bought my Honda because of the reputation.
2006 Honda crv, noise in the rear differential. Starts making grinding noise when turning sharply at low speed. Pasted 36 month warranty period. Honda put out a service bulletin #07-024 with instructions to replace the rear differential fluid and burnish the rear differential clutches. The owner's manual says to change differential fluid at 60k miles or 4 yrs. The original fluid is defective.
Dealer noticed a noise and reported a differential problem. Drained and refilled dual pump fluid, burnish differential clutches and drain and refill fluid again at a cost of $171. 70. Seems to be a problem with the Cr-v's that need to be addressed and a recall needs to be sent to owners.
The contact owns a 2000 Honda Cr-v. While driving 20 mph or in first and second gear, the vehicle hesitates to gain speed. It seems to not want to shift into the upper gear. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that there was an error message on the gear differential on the transmission. The dealer has been notified. Through research, she found complaints for this failure. The contact believes that this should not be occurring on her vehicle due to the mileage, and that the manufacturer should issue a recall. The current and failure mileages were 112,000. Updated 09/11/09 updated 09/15/09.
2007 Honda crv rear differential noise began at about30,000 miles. I took vehicle in to Honda of turnersville, NJ. They told me the noise was due to wear of the rear differential fluid, that it had to be changed whenever the noise appeared, or every 20,000 miles. They replaced the fluid free of charge, and burnished the bearings for the first time, but I was told I would have to pay for the service in the future. I was told it did not represent a safety hazard and that it did not do mechanical damage to the vehicle, nor would it in the future. There is nothing in the service manual regarding this service change requirement. I have noticed significant complaints from other crv owners on websites and blogs. I have also seen reference to "inferior subgrade" rear differential fluid use by Honda on the same vehicles.
2007 Honda crv turned out to be very bad on snow and/or ice covered roads. Rear end feels like it wants to kick out to the right. Took it to be serviced and was told the rear differential fluid needed to be drained and the clutches burnished. Drove better after that, 6 weeks later car making noise like a bearing was going out. Was told that my rear tires were cupped due to not having rotated them. Car had 20,000 miles on it. Since tires were already ruined, I waited to take it in again till 30,000 miles. Now the front tires were bald in the center and rear tires still cupped. They drained the rear differential fluid again and again burnished the clutches as well as performed the 30k suggested maintenance. 4k miles later, while driving on bad roads, the rear end once again feels like it wants to slide off the road to the right. Feels like it needs a couple hundred pounds of extra weight in the rear. Oh, forgot to mention, have had the tires replaced and today had it aligned. I have had 2 other Honda's (accords). Very pleased, but absolutely can't stand this car. I don't feel safe driving it.
