Honda CR-V owners have reported 1,568 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda CR-V based on all problems reported for the CR-V.
Steering of the vehicle was impacted, especially at highway speeds. The steering was “sticky” and required extra attention and great care to avoid driving off the road at highway speeds. No warning lamps identified the issue. Took vehicle to the dealer where issue was identified as steering rack replacement was required. With this being a common issue with Honda crv vehicles, with previous recalls, I felt it was important to file this notification.

My local Honda dealership inspected my crv on 6. 3. 26 after my complaint of "sticky steering. " they said the steering gearbox needs to be replaced at a cost of $4,000 +. Some crvs (1. 7 million) have been recalled for this, but my VIN number is not included. The mileage on this vehicle is 62,973. I am afraid to drive this vehicle because the steering is unreliable. I have to transport my husband to cancer doctor appointments and treatments as well as transporting my granddaughter when she is in my care. There were no warning lights, I just noticed that the steering was behaving erratically. I have contacted Honda care and received a case number: 16405358.

While driving at various speeds, the steering wheel exhibits a noticeable "sticky" sensation and momentary mechanical binding when making minor steering adjustments, specifically when turning between the 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions. This occurs with the lane keeping assist system (lkas) completely turned off. The binding is a serious safety hazard because it requires a sudden increase in physical effort to "break free" the steering wheel, which can easily lead to over-correction or jagged lane departures at highway speeds. An authorized Honda dealership formally inspected the vehicle and confirmed an internal mechanical failure within the electronic power steering gearbox assembly, stating it requires a full replacement. The dealership noted that while this failure matches the physical symptoms of Honda's high-profile steering rack recalls on other model years (such as NHTSA recall 24v-744), this 2019 model uses a different part number and is not currently covered. However, the dangerous mechanical behavior is identical, suggesting a broader engineering vulnerability with Honda eps gearboxes that extends to the 5th-generation Cr-v.

The contact stated that while driving the steering wheel became hard to steer. The dealer was contacted but the issue could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage 25,012.
My steering wheel sticks especially in highway driving. The steering wheel feels as if it momentarily "locks" or "sticks" in the center position while driving at highway speeds. When I try to correct it, the wheel snaps free, often causing the vehicle to jerk or overcorrect. This is a big safety concern. There is a recall, but my model year of 2021 is not included in the recall. This has been an ongoing issue not just a one-time incident.
There is clicking sound while I turn steering wheel, and the steering is not smooth, it is stuck sometimes in place and needs more force to move it. The sound is at low speeds or high speeds on the highways. It is random.
Steering wheel sticks at high speeds and after driving longer periods of time. Presents a danger by needing to over correct the steering to “unstick” it.
The steering is sticking when driving. This is especially concerning on highway driving or on curved roads. I have to fight the steering wheel to move, even slightly. The known recalls were for newer models. This recall needs to be extended to cover older models as it is a known issue.
Experiencing steering wheel binding at highway speeds - steering gearbox on my leased car, 2018 crv was issued a safety recall by the NHTSA on September 28, 2018. I leased my car in July of 2018, but never received a safety recall from Honda. Document [xxx] . The issue is described as "sticky steering". I've contacted 2 Honda service locations, and they can't find any recall information for my 2018 vehicle. There are newer more recent models/years that do have this recall, but none for mine. However, the NHTSA issued one that nobody can find. I found it, but apparently it doesn't exist and I'm not finding anyone at the Honda service centers that are helpful. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that while driving, the steering wheel became loose and grabbed. The vehicle felt like it was traveling into another lane. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 18v663000 (steering). While her husband was driving, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who provided a front-end alignment. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the steering assembly gearbox needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, who confirmed there was no recall coverage. The manufacturer mentioned goodwill assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 100,018.
Steering is ‘sticky’ at highway speeds, doesnt hold on center, steering wheel gives impression of being stuck.
At times, the steering wheel becomes hard to turn exactly like changing lanes when the lane assist is on. This occurs when lane assist is off!.

Steering sticks/locks while driving requires excessive input. Feels like the lane departure is controlling the steering and fighting you for control. There is a recall for the same issue but our VIN is not included. Honda needs to re-evaluate to expand recall as this appears to apply to more than the original recalled VIN’s.
Steering wheel sticks moving wheel left or right while driving allowing over correction and dangerous situations. No lamps. Mechanical. Same issue for 23-25 models with recall. Yes it's available for inspection. No professional has confirmed it yet because frankly , I shouldn't have to pay for this , but I need to take it in this week. The 'incident' occurred the last week and a half , but the website only allows me to choose one day. Note. Problem is getting worse.
My steering wheel has been sticking and it can be very scary when it happens. The Honda dealership just quoted us 4,700 to replace the steering rack. We bought our car brand new, no issues or accidents, and only has 44,000 miles. Upon research this exact problem is a big issue with similar year / makes and models but our specific VIN has no recall for this. Very upsetting.
Steering has become intermittently "sticky". When it happens, if I try to turn the steering wheel a very short distance it will resist until I put enough force to move it about twice as far as intended. Although the greater steering angle achieved has not been sufficient to take me out of my lane, it could do so. When steering is working normally, I easily turn the steering wheel to any angle without resistence. No warnings have been displayed.
My 2024 Honda crv was part of the recall for potential steering gearbox issues. Recall repair took place on 4/2/2025. Steering problem has persisted ("sticky steering") and when I had the steering checked today (5/6/2026) during a regular maintenance appointment, I was notified entire steering gearbox assembly should be replaced. Upon further research I discovered this is an ongoing issue 2023-2024 Honda models due to improperly assembled gearbox components. The recall repair included a new spring and additional grease to the worm gear. This was clearly insufficient and the recall should include complete replacement of the steering gearbox assembly with a properly manufactured unit. I have included via upload copies of the recall repair and diagnosis of the problem and associated cost from today's regular maintenance.

While driving, car engine stutters and stops. The infotainment system went black while driving. The system is hard to steer often while turning. The trunk would not open when touching button for it to open. Took out the key fob and it also would not respond. Used the door release from dash and still would not open. Cancel the control unit then tried again and key fob worked that time. I went to dealer and it was reset, and this all happened after the reset. Car was inspected on may 6 at ed napleton Honda st. Peters. Miles 8766. Car purchased at 6500 miles. Recall srs software was performed.
I am having a terrible problem with the steering wheel, keeping it in the lane along with hearing a loud noise when turning the steering wheel left to right. I only have 63,000 miles on this car. Took it to a dealership and they said it is the electric power assist system. I am finding out there is a recall with this very thing but that my car was not on the list. It should be. I am having this very problem. It is to dangerous to drive. Honda has a reputation for being a great safety car. This one is not. They said the charge would be $4500. This is not right. I am a [xxx] and [xxx]. I don't believe the manufacturer has been honest about this safety issue. . . They claim only 54 cars were affected. Please check into it for me please. After vehicle is driven, especially on highway, steering wheel binds or sticks when turning. This causes a dangerous overcorrection, and potential hazard.
Steering wheel has begun to "stick" in place, extra force required to move the steering wheel. Turning the steering wheel is rarely a smooth effort. Can also hear a clicking noise from under neath the car while driving. Recently found a small oil/grease stain from underneath the vehicle in my garage. Took my vehicle to a Honda dealer, they determined that the rack and pinion steering needs to be replaced. Cost to replace steering rack = $6222. 70. Car has 140k miles. Dealer would not cover an of the cost due to age/mileage of car.
Unable to control steering properly when driving, steering wheel sticks when trying to turn it. The Honda dealer said it is caused by the steering gear box and needed to be replaced. I saw where there is a recall for this problem on all 2017-2018 Honda crvs, all trims included. When I checked our VIN it wasn't listed but we have the problem. Please help. Thank you.
Steering rack failure. Steering wheel "sticks" when straightening out of a curve. This causes a need to force the steering wheel more which then causes an over-correction, possibly into another lane. Very unsafe. Steering rack failure has been confirmed by dealer. It is a known problem by Honda, but yet has never been recalled for 2022 crv's. This problem could get someone killed, a child killed. Honda should be ashamed, especially charging owners $4,000 to fix a problem that is theirs. This is criminal.
Sticky steering. . . Steering get's slightly stuck then it takes a little more effort to turn the wheel causing the wheel to turn too much sometimes to get it back on course. . . Same problem that has been recalled on other models but for some reason not a recall on my 2018 with only 67000 miles.
The contact owns a 2025 Honda Cr-v- difficulty steering wheel, drives a little stiff. Lane assist malfunctioning, cruise control malfunctioning. The vehicle was previously taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with an issue related to NHTSA campaign number 24v744000 (steering). The contact stated the issue persisted. The dealer was contacted again that the issue had reoccurred but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000.

To start model Honda crv 2018 did indeed have a recall in 11/2018 but only for 56 or 57 autos which mine was not one. My SUV with only 55k miles has started to have sticking in the steering wheel mechanism/hydraulics/or electrical systems relating to steering for the last 7 - 9 months. I was told by the service person in 04/26 that they would investigate the issue for $250+ bucks and if they needed to repair it the cost would be around $3. 5k. I am a senior citizen and I think is exorbitant. Im afraid the steering wheel jerking with eventually cause the SUV to veer out of its own lane into another. The SUV has not been inspected by anyone. There have been no indication lights or other system problems prior to this happening.
My 2018 Honda Cr-v lx (approx. 40,920 miles) has an electric power steering (eps) rack that sticks and catches at highway speeds, typically above 35 mph. The steering wheel requires extra force to turn, then suddenly releases, creating a snap/lurch effect. This behavior poses a significant overcorrection risk during highway lane changes and gradual curves. There were no warning lights or messages prior to or during the problem. The issue presented gradually and has been consistent above the noted speed threshold. A Honda dealership diagnosed the vehicle and confirmed the fault. Their process included a test drive to reproduce the sticking, reproduction while stationary, and further confirmation with the vehicle lifted — turning the steering wheel by hand with the wheels off the ground. In that condition, the technician heard and identified clicking and popping from inside the rack, isolating the fault to the eps rack assembly itself. The dealer's written recommendation is replacement of the eps rack at a cost of $3,917. 31 plus tax. The component is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance representatives, or the manufacturer beyond the dealership visit described above. I am aware that NHTSA has previously investigated eps gearbox faults on related Honda platforms involving worm gear/worm wheel defects, and that TSB 23-037 was issued for 2022–23 civics describing an identical symptom. I believe my 2018 Cr-v is affected by the same underlying defect. No repair has been performed at this time.
Hello. We purchased this 2018 Honda Cr-v new in 2018 from the local Honda dealer, Honda of lake jackson, TX. In the spring of 2025 the a/c stopped working. We took it to a local shop and they had to replaced the following: blower motor replaced, blower motor replaced, a/c evaporator replaced, a/c expansion/orifice valve replaced, heater core replaced. This was around a $3,000 repair. A month or so later in may of 2025 we took the car to the Honda dealer because of steering instability issues. We were advised that the entire steering column would need to replaced due to known safety issues (drive shaft can fail completely at highway speeds). The following was repaired at this time: --rack and pinion replaced, steering gear replaced, valve cover gasket replaced vehicle was at 61,984 miles at this time. This was a $5,000+ repair. It cost so much that we actually had to take out financing to pay it, which in essence essentially renewed our car payment (car was already paid off at this time). Now for the past 8 months or so we have had a "juddering" issue where you can feel the transmission ctv system jump and jerk as you accelerate to highway speeds. This issue also puts the entire transmission at risk of failure. The Honda dealer here checked the vehicle out and suggested we do a transmission fluid swap. This cost $189 for the "diagnostic fee" and $179 for the swap. So another nearly $400. They did the swap and said that it did not fix the issue and now we need to pay $2800 to have the "torque convertor" replaced. This is $10,000 plus dollars in repairs, nearly half to cost of the vehicle. This is a ridiculous amount of issues for a vehicle that had only 61,000 miles. We have always had regular maintenance performed also. From what I have read, Honda knows about these issues but has not issued a recall. In addition I've read that "juddering" ctv issue is a known issue in 2015-2018 Honda Cr-v's. Needless to say we are not happy with Honda about any of this.
While driving, the steering can stick momentarily and cause a jerking of the steering wheel. When taking the vehicle to the Honda dealer, the recall for this issue only covers 23-25 Cr-v vehicles and since there are no warning lights or codes for it, their recommendation is to drive the vehicle until it gets worse. The jerking of the wheel can cause loss of control and makes the vehicle a hazard.
Approx 2nd week of March, steering wheel began to have 1” play both left and right. Scheduled an appt although there were no warning/indicators illuminated. The day before appt, while traveling at approx 30 mph, applying brakes and coming to a stop, the vehicle began to make a rumbling sound near the engine. On the same day traveling up hill about 40 mph, applying gas, sounded like scraping noise from the front of the vehicle. I transport my 2 grandsons (8,9) most days and this was a major highway, remote area, no nearby homes and a very narrow shoulder. I was fortunate to make it to a family house and had the vehicle towed to the island Honda. Honda confirmed that the steering rack is shot and not safe to drive. Stating the part is on back order and in the manufacturing stage. Vehicle only has 46,396 miles.
Noticed problems with steering the vehicle. Initially the was not smooth when driving or turning and the steering would go through a very brief but light indecisive bump this problem started a week ago and has become worse. Plan to take car to dealer for diagnostics. Called Honda corporate and it looks like they may assist me with this.

The contact owns a 2021 Honda Cr-v. The contact stated that while driving and turning, the steering wheel was sticking and failed to return to the center as intended. The contact stated that the failure progressively worsened, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be test-driven, and the dealer determined that the steering rack and pinion had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
Electronic power steering failure.
After driving for about 10 minutes the steering begins to act differently at speeds above about 45 mph. It usually happens when steering to the left for a curve in the road and then trying to steer back to the right to come out of the curve. The steering wheel will stick and require additional effort to turn back to the right. When extra pressure is applied, the steering wheel will turn and a dull clicking sound is heard. If pressure is not applied it could cause a head-on collision. The Honda dealer duplicated the issue and said the repair was to replace the eps gear box assembly at a cost of $4,300 just for the part. They also said it wasn't a safety issue but if it gets worse, let them know.
