The 2009 Honda Odyssey has a known power steering failure. American Honda knows that it is a design flaw and has only offered an extended warranty of 7 yrs/100,000 miles via a TSB, not a recall. Unfortunately my car did not experience this problem till a year later after the warranty expired. I had difficulty reversing my car and it was harder to make turns from a stop position or when I was slowing down. If my steering had completely broken down, it would have been dangerous with my kids in the vehicle. Luckily I don't drive on freeways a lot, otherwise having to put more effort steering my car or having it fail would be bad. When I contacted american Honda, they refused to accept responsibility even though they knew it was a safety issue. With the pump failing, it creates a unsafe environment for not only me, my kids, and other drivers when I'm struggling to steer my car. The cost of the repair was $850 without the guarantee that it wouldn't fail again since it's a design issue. There are numerous reports of this happening to other Odyssey owners. I believe that this should be a recall that Honda fixes because it effects not only my model, but models 2007 and on. Having trouble steering a car is extremely dangerous and should be considered a recall instead of a TSB. Some cars will exhibit this dangerous failure after the warranty expires and we shouldn't be penalized for it if it doesn't fail right away. It's not right that I was sold a car that is unsafe, esp. Since it's a family car and I transport my kids everyday in it.

Power steering pump is failing to provide assistance at low engine speeds every time the vehicle is operated (not intermittent). Condition makes it difficult and slow to manuever the vehicle during parking lot type maneuvers. The first time I experienced the condition was while parallel parking in the city during a time of heavy traffic. Note: power steering reservoir was replaced under warranty after one year of ownership due to air ingestion problem. Vehicle is a one owner and I can confirm that only Honda power steering fluid has ever been used.

Power steering pump failing on 2007 Honda odessey 50000 miles. Have done some internet research and apparently this is a wide spread problem with this model year.
I owned my 2005 Honday Odyssey for 2. 5 years when the power steering pump failed on my minivan. I paid to have it replaced. 29k miles later it failed again. Honda has since redesigned the part. When this part fails the power steering is dramatically reduced making it virtually impossible to turn the wheel at slower speeds.

According to Honda service bulletin 07-005 June 17, 2008 titled power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums (supersedes 07-005, dated January 26, 2007, to update the information marked by the black bars), symptom "the power steering pump whines, buzzes, or hums after driving for 30 minutes in temperatures 35 to 40 degrees f (2 to 5 degrees c). Probable cause the power steering pump reservoir is defective correction action: flush the power steering system with clean power steering fluid, and then replace the power steering reservoir. Parts information power steering reservoir: p/n 53701-shj-a01c1, h/c 0923672 required materials Honda genuine power steering fluid: p/n 08206-9002, h/c 3747284 (four bottles per vehicle are needed) the defective power steering reservoir causes the power steering pump to whine because power steering fluid is not pump out of the reservoir. If power steering fluid is not being pumped out of the reservoir, the power steer fails which could result in loss of steering control. Honda acknowledges this problem with the above information and the warranty information but refuses to correct this problem on vehicles out side of the 36000 miles warranty. According Honda service bulletin 07-005, this "applies to 2005-07 Odyssey -all 2008 -from VIN 5fnrl38. . 8b000001 thru 5fnrl38. . 8b075356 -from VIN f5nrl38. . 8b400001 thru 5fnrl38. . 8b419525 I asked my local Honda dealer (cale yarborough Honda 2723 west palmetto street florence SC 29501 843-669-5556) to estimate how much this repair would cost. According to their service manager, the replacement reservoir is $11. 50, the power steering fluid is $16. 00 and the labor is $170. 00. The total cost $197. 50. Since this defect has been acknowledged by Honda and may results in loss of steering control and an accident, Honda should recall this part and pay for it to be repaired on vehicles with this problem.
Steering & control difficult at low speeds. Power steering pump failure at 52, 749 miles--required replacement. Same problem at 105,000 miles--required power steering pump replacement. . . Again. Same problem at 159,000 miles--required power steering pump replacement a third time.
Occasionally during heavy rain, we loose our power steering for a period of 20-45 seconds or more. At the same time the battery warning indicator lights up. It is almost impossible to control the vehicle when this occurs. Fortunately it has not happened in heavy traffic and have not had an accident as of yet. This is dangerous and could cause a very serious accident with serious injury or death. We have notified the Honda dealer whom tried to remedy the problem by changing the power steering pump but this failed to solve the problem and the issue remains. The dealer has been unable to fix the problem.

Honda Odyssey 2005 power steering problem: power steering fails to work at random times. It is difficult to steer the vehicle while parking or turning at slower speeds. It happens at random times and when caught off guard makes it frightening and physically difficult to operate the vehicle. Honda has recognized this is a problem in their service bulletin 07-005 from August 21, 2009 which includes our model year. However, Honda is refusing to cover the $700 expense of replacing the power steering pump and accessories because we are out of warranty. The problem is we had symptoms they describe since we had the vehicle at the beginning but they never could 'replicate' what we were experiencing. The faulty tubing they used in the system actually has ruined the pump over the years. Had they recognized this problem previously we may have been able to salvage the pump, but we did get an estimate and have someone look at the pump and they admitted it was needing replacement. We use this vehicle to drive our family and although it generally happens at slow speeds, there have been multiple situations where we have almost hit another vehicle as we were turning and our car stopped responding to the turn we were making. Everyone I talk to that has this vehicle has the same problem. Honda knows they put in faulty tubing which degraded to make little pieces loose in the fluid which then ruined the pump. This is a safety issue and one that we should not be held responsible for financially.
