While driving on the road, completely lost power steering. Tried to turn down the street where I live and almost didn't make the turn. The eps light is on and will not go off, there is no power steering. I let the car sit in the driveway over the weekend, started it up and there is still no power steering.

09' Elantra GLS approx. 66k miles 6/18/2020. I lost power steering and the eps light came on while accelerating through a light that had just turned green. Ever since then I randomly loose power steering and the eps light comes on. I've lost power steering while driving, right after shifting into gear (reverse and drive), and after I start to accelerate from a stopped position. There does not seem to be a pattern. The weather has been in the 70s/80s. Vehicle is all stock, fairly low mileage and has undergone routine maintenance. The previous owner reported this same issue at 35k miles which Hyundai fixed by adjusting the steering angle sensor. That wasn't a permanent fix, as im learning the best permanent fix is to replace the whole steering column.
Lost power steering. First time it was reset. This time I am informed it needs steering column. Cost of $2700 car was parked in driveway.
When turning the wheel while stationary or driving, there is a loud crunching sound coming from the wheel turning right or left. Someone told me I will then lose power steering & that around 21,000-29,000 miles on your car this is what happens. A small wheel nut behind the wheel & dash board breaks up. I am afraid to lose my power steering. This has happened to a number of owners.

As I was exiting the highway onto a sharp curved off ramp, unexpectedly the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn without warning. This unexpected loss of my power steering almost put me into the roads guard railwhile navigating the off ramp. I was able to regain control and safely pull to the side of the road. I noticed the eps light was on. I shut of my vehicle and tried to trouble shoot it, which I was unable to do. I restarted the vehicle and the light went off and my sterring returned to normal power steering mode. The second time this happened my wife was driving the vehicle to the dealership so they could troubleshoot the eps issue, again the vehicle lost power steering with the eps light turning on. The vehicle is being taken to Hyundai of slidell for diagnostic testing. The dealer also stated that the VIN was excluded from a recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 15876848 the approximate failure mileage was 148,000.

I have a 2010 Elantra 4dsd 2. 0 102,000 miles I have had no major issues with the car until about 3 months ago. Suddenly the eps light came on and I lost power steering. Upon pulling over and restarting the car the problem went away. I went about a week, and suddenly it did it again. Restarted car, went away, still does this intermittently. 2 days ago, eps light was one and was not able to remove the light using the method above. Also, my power steering wheel is so stiff. I took it to the dealer today, they found the following codes: eps - electronic power - c1290 - torque sensor main signal fault eps - electronic power - c1604ecu(brake system) hardware error they told me I would need a new steering column ($2500+). This seems a bit strange to me for an intermittent issue. . Read more...
The eps light went on and I lost power steering. Luckily I was not on the highway or I could have been severe. Hyundai did a recall for this issue back in 2015 but it was just a system update for the steering module but it seems like a short term solution. I have found over a hundred complaints where other customers are having th same safety issue and I really think Hyundai needs to do something about it. The steering in the 09 Elantras are unsafe and will eventually possibly kill someone.
Lost power steering while driving. Extremely hard to steer. Repair estimate more than car worth it seems called Hyundai, they said I am out of luck as there are no recalls on this condition. Many many complaints anout this condition online however.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. While driving 30 mph and making a right turn down a hill, the electronic power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle lost power steering ability and became hard to steer. The vehicle was turned off and, upon restarting, the steering returned to normal. The dealer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.

Car loses power when driving car at low speed, car just shuts down and would need to place in park and restart the car, also lost power steering while driving car on the freeway, card wheel locked and car lost all power, was able to place it in park and restarted it, but was with out power steering, car shakes when driving passed 70 miles an hr.
While driving on 5 freeway in California my 2014 Hyundai Elantra started to violently shake like someone hitting the brake. I threw it in neutral and help my wife turn the steering wheel because we lost power steering. We got lucky and had a space to coast to the side of the road. When we got towed to tuttle-click in irvine, CA and our car turned into the service department, they basically said we are on our own to find a ride back home and no loaner car. Two days later I have to call them to find out the problem, first a technician said that it was a bad battery but that would not have caused it to completely shut down. Then a few hours later the service manager calls to say it was the battery and that is what caused it to shut down on us. After (4) days of keeping the car, the Hyundai dealership said that our battery had a catastrophic failure which caused our car to completely shut down on the freeway. I have filed a complaint with Hyundai corporate but don't know what they can do?.

While driving on highway at approximately 45 mph, lost power steering while driving in fast lane. Took all my might to wrest control of the vehicle. Steering stiffened up, was able to get vehicle across traffic lanes to parking lot entrance. Noticed eps indicator light lit, parked vehicle, turned off ignition. Restarted, and had power steering. I was fortunate in having distance between vehicles when I initially lost the power steering, as I was only able to make wide turns in directinbg the vehicle out of the traffic flow. Very dangerous. Will not allow anyone but me to drive this vehicle at this point. Has there ever been a recall isued for this problem?.

I was driving on a back road to my next destination when suddenly my steering wheel became stiff. The eps and esc lights were on in the dashboard. I was able to pull the car over. Turned it off and back on. Seemed ok. Power steering returned. Eps and esc lights off. Went up a few feet to stoplight. Lost power again. Did not feel safe. Stopped the car. Called for tow truck. Towed to nearest Hyundai dealer. They did diagnostic tests. One tech said it was steering column assembly. They said to follow up with regular dealer next week if it happened again. On 4/7/15 car brought into dealer again for same problem. They did an eps update. On April 15, 2015 my husband was driving us. He almost lost control of the car on the highway because he lost power steering. He pulled over restarted car twice. Then steering came back. Eps and esc lights went off. Called Hyundai dealer today. He said to bring it in. I had it towed in.

Eps and esc lights came on and vehicle lost power steering. Problem is intermittent. Vehicle towed to dealership. Dealership is unable to replicate issue at this time. No fault codes found by dealership service dept. Dealer advised they will test vehicle again today (12/11/14) to try to replicate issue. Issue occurred several times (8 to 9) over a 24 hour period. Very dangerous situation as condition occurs randomly. Eps light will turn off and esc light stayed illuminated. Vehicle recovered on its own when eps light turned off. Both lights were off the following morning when towed to dealership after sitting overnight. Condition has occurred while making a u-turn, pulling out of drive way, and while making left and right turns.
My daughter was driving in a rain storm and lost her power steering. The eps (electronic power steering) light illuminated. She was lucky she didn't get into an accident. She pulled over to the shoulder, turned her car off, then started it again. The eps light went out and the power steering was again working. I performed an internet search and found numerous complaints concerning the Hyundai eps system. This is a serious safety hazard and a recall should be issued immediately to correct the problem.
My daughter and I purchased this car August 30th 2013. In good faith from joyce koons in manassas virginia. Less than 90 days after purchase the vehicle has lost power steering ability twice. On Nov 11th the car was serviced (total charge $172. 50) and now the entire column shaft assembly needs replacing part # 56310-2h50. $2105. 56 + parts $600. 00 + alignment $99. 95 my inquiry is two fold #1 is there any history of this being a faulty "part" on this vehicle? #2 the human element (because I know I human will be reading this) we purchased an extended warranty on this vehicle because my daughter's father passed away and he always took care of the vehicles. Now we are being told that this isn't a covered part even though steering issues are supposed to be covered.
Eps light came on the dash and I immediately lost all power steering. The vehicles steering became so stiff it was extremely difficult to steer the car. Someone with less strength like a young lady or older person would be in grave danger of crashing, anyone for that matter - I have found out that the systems is totally integrated. There is a module that has failed but can not be replaced on it's own. The entire steering column has to be replaced for about $2500. 00. The light went off after I shut the car off and stayed off for a for several weeks then without warning came back on again and the power steering was gone. This continued to happen several more times until the light remained on. When this happens it is very dangerous. It can happen anytime at any speed. I contacted Hyundai to no satisfaction and now must spend $2500. 00 to replace the entire steering column without knowing how long it will last and if I will crash the next time it happens. I would be shocked if this has not caused any accidents. If your going to use an integrated brake system it should be reliable and safe !!.
Car lost power steering while driving on the long island expressway. Steering wheel jerked, esp light came on and power steering failed. Car sat overnight and was fine the next day. Situation reoccurred on or about 1/19/13 and 12/5/13. Each time the problem resolved itself overnight. It occurred again on 4/23/14. After the most recent occurrence, power steering has failed completely and has not been restored.
Front end making a noise upon a slow to medium front or back-up turn. Also, at various times the esp light came on and I lost power steering(very dangerous while on the road at speed). Also, the front tires were weariing very unevenly(rear tires fine). They replaced the steering angle sensor and steering shaft assembly on 24dec 2010 with mileage at 35,791. They offered to sell me two front tires, alignment and balance at a steep price, I declined and had my mechanic do it for less. I strongly feel that the defect caused my tires to wear out too soon. This is a potentially fatal defect because if it happens while at highway speed you will suffer injuries. This is my third Hyundai, the two were fine.
