1 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/05/2020

While driving on the highway approximately 68 miles per hour I noticed an odd skipping in the steering. Eventually the power steering was gone and a steering warning light as well as the traction control warning light came on. We drove to a gas station, turned it off and when it was restarted, the power steering returned. The skipping continued and we have had 2 more instances of the power steering going out, both times at slow speeds which made it incredibly difficult to steer. I called Hyundai and they explained that I need to take the car to get looked at by a certified Hyundai service technician. When I reached out to them, they explained that I am responsible for the diagnostic payment as well as any repair costs since my warranty just expired and there are no recalls for this issue on this model.

7 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/30/2019

More often than not, the steering wheel will virtually lock, only allowing me to turn the steering wheel 2 inches, with increasing difficulty after that range in either direction. Making sharper turns literally impossible without having to harshly tug the wheel only effectively moving the steering wheel another 1-2inches with each tug. This goes away when turning off and on the vehicle, and has been happening for over a year now. The power steering light and traction control light both come on as soon as it happens seemingly out of nowhere.

13 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/23/2015

On July 15th I attempted to start my car and the esc light and the electronic power steering light both came on. I was not able to steer the car. I called my mechanic and the car was taken to the shop. It was found that the computer code for the eps was not in the system. The car had not been drive for about a week. The mechanic was able to reprogram the system. The following day I again attempted to drive the car and the same lights (esc and eps) came on. 15 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/23/2015

While driving the steering will have a slight lock to it that will be unlocked by over-correcting the wheel. This problem has been present since the purchase of the vehicle in March and was looked at by Hyundai who said that there was no problem and that what we were feeling was common in an electronic steering system. In our ignorance we accepted their diagnosis but the problem has become worse since then, on 5/23/15 as I was driving the problem was so bad that it felt as if the wheel had locked up entirely and was pointed in the direction of the ditch, I corrected the problem but had to use more force than any previous time and in doing so the car jerked into the opposite lane, had a vehicle been in the opposite lane I would have hit them head on. The vehicle has not had as hard of a lockup since then however we have not gone over 55 since then either. In the city at lower speeds of 25-45 you can still feel it locking up at times however it is much more easily corrected. The problem still persists at any speed and distance, but on 5/23 was the worst incident yet and I expect that it will get worse until it is properly corrected. Hyundai though says that there is no problem and its all part of the normal operations of an electronic steering system, I however am not convinced. Thank you for your time.

17 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/16/2014

Over the past 2 years the electric power steering (eps) on my 2010 Hyundai Elantra has failed multiple times - the power steering stops and the eps light on the dash illuminates. Luckily I was always close to home and no one was hurt. It happens under all kinds of conditions, going uphill / downhill / 50mph or 5mph / turning / driving straight - there is not a single 'road condition' or 'driving condition' that consistently triggers the failure. I reported the problem to Hyundai in connection with last year's 'stop lamp switch' recall. I had hoped the problems were related - they are not. I have taken the car to the dealer several times (rude and unhelpful is an understatement). I have had the 'stop lamp switch' replaced as part of the recall, and also the 'air bag clockspring' replaced (which I had to pay for), and the steering 're-calibrated'. Since these repairs the eps has failed on a few separate occasions, and I have taken it to the mechanic twice more, and no one can figure out why the eps is just shutting down. This is a serious and potentially fatal design flaw. I would just like to know what the issue is and how to solve it. By now Hyundai has to know this widespread problem.

20 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

Power steering failed and eps light illuminated. Condition cleared upon stopping vehicle, and restarting it. This continued intermittently (maybe 10-15 instances, often with months between occurrences) until October (182900 miles), when eps failed to reset. Speed was not a consistent factor; eps would deactivate at any speed - including as low as 20 mph. Especially if/when occurring at highway speed, this is a serious safety concern. I have seen similar eps complaints for this model/year reported on various tech forums and am concerned that my experience was not an isolated incident. Dealer replaced steering column to resolve issue.

24 Power Steering Light On problem of the 2007 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/12/2009

When turning the steering wheel to make a turn or when backing out of a parking stall and then pulling forward you will randomly get a popping sound coming from the steering column area. You can also feel a light pop. The vehicle has been took to the dealer, for them to check but they said they could not find anything. The last time the service tech said, he did hear a small pop but it was so light he would not be able to find it. So he tighten the bolts for the steering column. However now the noise is happening more often. The problem first started when the car had about 50k miles on it. I took the car into the dealer a few times for the same problem the first time they look at it and said they could not find it. I re took the car in about a month later and this time the tech did hear it when we went for a test drive but he told me he would not be able to find it and to bring it back in later. When I did they said it would be a charge to relook at it because its been in before for the same problem. Now it have been about a year since I last took it in for this but now it is doing it more often and loader when it does do it. Also the air bags light turned on and would not reset. But after moving the steering will tilt the light then reset and stayed off.
