8 Steering Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/27/2019

Fall 2018 - loud brushing noise when I turn the steering wheel right or left. Mechanic told me to take it to Hyundai to fix the clock spring. Did but the sound returned within 3 weeks. Lived with it because it wasn't as loud as before. Almost two months ago the loud sound returned. Took it back to Hyundai who said that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. Did not trust Hyundai. Took it to my mechanic who says that there is a damaged bearing in the column. Because I do not want to take a chance on guessing if the correct bearing has been found and the steering wheel motor may or may not also be compromised, I am allowing my mechanic to replace the steering column. The estimated cost is $1600. Fyi the sound is loudest when I am backing out of a parking space and turning the steering column. Also when I am turning in to a parking space. It can also be heard when the car is making turns when on the road. There is a slight give to the steering wheel when driving but it is manageable. The steering wheel also will not lock.

11 Steering Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

Vehicle steering wheel makes noise and jerks when turning, either at a stand still or driving. I am in fear of my life. Hyundai responded via email and better business bureau. Their email dated 1/9/19 indicates my complaint is about "campaign txx7," and that "wear of the coupling does not affect the ability to steer or control the vehicle and is not a safety issue. " my mother in law also has a 2013 Elantra where the part and labor were covered under an extended warranty and the issue is widely effecting vehicles based on a google search. They want $125 to look at my vehicle and I advised them they should have done a robo call to potential victims informing of them of this well known issue. That process would have cost them nothing. My mother in law spent about $1,000 in repairs to fix the issue before my car, shortly thereafter, had the same problem and I googled it learning how prevalent it is. Her mechanic called Hyundai who acted like they haven't heard of the problem until the extended warranty was brought up to them. She was fearful to drive her vehicle and borrowed a car to go to work while she had the worn coupling issue. Hyundia is putting peoples' lives at risk downplaying, not informing, and refusing to acknowledge the depth of the problem. Both my mother in laws car (now fixed) and now mine, are difficult to steer while driving at any speed.

12 Steering Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/16/2018

Been taking to dealership for this a few times was told no problem. Took car to sears they informed me of a recall for this issue. It's in fact not a recall just something Hyundai added to the warranty. I had to have sears tell me so I can tell the dealership. My car is at 99,000 miles and I believe dealership was waiting for 100k to tell me the problem so they could charge me. Description below: the mdps (motor driven power steering) assembly contains a flexible rubber coupling which may wear over time resulting in a slight "clicking" or "thud" type noise when turning the steering wheel. Wear of the coupling does not affect the ability to steer or control the vehicle and is not a safety issue.

13 Steering Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. While driving various speeds, there was an abnormal clicking noise emerging from the steering wheel and the power steering indicator illuminated. The contact called wiesner Hyundai (1645 interstate 45 n #400, conroe, TX 77304, (936) 523-6300) and was informed that the vehicle was not covered under a warranty and to schedule a service appointment. 14 Steering Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/30/2018

A few weeks ago I noticed a popping noise coming from my steering area when I made turns. I took my car to my mechanic and he could find the actual part but knew it was coming from the power steering assist. After some research he found that a few people were having issues with the coupler inside the steering column. I have attached pictures of the the part looked like when he removed it. This is very concerning since I use this vehicle daily and transport my 2 kids to daycare. I put less than 10,000 miles on it each year since driving from home to my kids daycare and work put less than 10 miles on it a day.

15 Steering Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/20/2018

Intermittent engine light illumination. Happens only after the "vehicle check in progress". Car has started to run rough both while accelerating and at a stop. Acts like it will shut off. Having to put the car in neutral and pat the gas to keep it running. There is a TSB for this issue but no active recall. Constant run around at the service centers. They say its normal for it to run rough. Also the rubber steering coupler went bad. Was making a thud noise when steering wheel was turned. Also a TSB for this. . . . No recall. But wait theres more! the clock spring is also bad! TSB for this too! bad clock spring results in the loss of power to the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel. When I replaced the steering coupling, I forgot to plug in a wiring harness under the wheel and the buttons started working again but had no power steering. Plugged the harness back in and had steering but the buttons no longer worked. Pretty sure Hyundai is uploading error codes and giving people the run around in an attempt to get more money. Recall this crap already before something bad happens. Hold this company responsible for selling crap to people.

24 Steering Noise problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/13/2016

I took my vehicle to wilson Hyundai for the recalls to be corrected. I was also having issues with an air bag light and a clicking noise in the steering wheel. I received a call telling me my steering column needed to be replaced because there was a short in the sensors to a module. I was then told that the sensor to my passenger seat had malfunctioned and that I needed to replace the entire bottom portion of the seat. They were wanting to charge me over $6,000. 00 to repair these two issues. There are recalls on both of these issues: NHTSA 15v100000 addresses issues with the steering and the fix does not include or require the replacement of the entire steering column. The solution for this recall is to reprogram the computer. This does not address the clicking noise in the column where a gear/cog disintegrates over time. . . . A $12. 00 part is estimated to cost over $500 in labor to replace. The issue with the air bag malfunctioning is addressed in 2009 Hyundai Elantra air bags: frontal: sensor/ control module NHTSA campaign #11v143000. I am being told that this issue is only for certain 2007-2009 Elantras manufactured before Nov 1, 2008. My vehicle was manufactured April 30, 2009 so they dont want to fix the problem even though it is the exact same problem addressed in recall. I would greatly appreciate it if you would look into this matter and expand the manufacturing date to address those of us who own a 2009 manufactured after November 1, 2008 Hyundai Elantras whose air bags are malfunctioning.

29 Steering Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/25/2013

I purchased the car in March, it was my first time buying a new car. Within the first couple of days after buying the car I noticed a few rattling and clanking noises. I believed this to be the cars moving parts, and didn't think much of it at the time, especially since I was used to driving used cars that sounded worse. After a few weeks, I noticed that the noises where noticeably louder, along with a loud knocking noise when I turned the steering wheel. The dealership that I purchased the car from (universal Hyundai in orlando) was booked up so I made an appointment at orlando Hyundai. Shortly after bringing my car in, and having the service department look at the car, I was told that the car was sold to me defective, that "the left and right inner tire rods and lock nuts were loose, threads were damaged, and the lock nuts were left loose from the factory". The service manager explained to me that this could have easily caused an accident, and that "one tire would've went one way and the other tire would've went the other way, causing your car to come to a sudden halt". This might have caused a serious accident, and knowing that I was driving that car on the highway, taking trips with my family and children, while the car was defective was very scary and upsetting. I was very excited about purchasing a new car, and hoped that I would not have to deal with these kinds of problems. I am extremely disappointed and want absolutely nothing to do with Hyundai. I have the statement from the service department stating that the factory made a mistake and I plan on filing a complaint through Hyundai and the national highway safety administration.

30 Steering Noise problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

I had stopped at an intersection. I started to make a left turn and it became extremely difficult to steer. I noticed the eps sensor on the dashboard was on. There was no warning or strange sound. I was probably going 5 mph since, there appeared to be no power in car. I pulled over leaving the vehicle on. I preceded to make my way home. Having no real ability to steer the vehicle. I am very fortunate the oncoming traffic was still a good distance from vehicle. I did hear a clicking noise in the steering when I made a left turn. I took into to the dealer in 2011, they we're unable to duplicate the sound. At that time it was under warranty. That is the only warning I could of possibly had there was something unsafe about the vehicle.
