1 Steering Wheel problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/27/2011

I was driving on the highway and was cut off by another car. I was travelling about 50mph, I proceeded to brake (did not require hard braking, because me speed was not high) and steer to the right to avoid hitting the right side of the car that cut me off. My car over compensated and proceeded to swerve. It took a lot to regain control. My initial steer to avoid the car in front was not significant enough to cause the vehicle to swerve out of control. I have never experienced this with other vehicles that I have driven and this experience was rather frightening.

2 Steering Wheel problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

I took delivery of the brand new car & about a mile down the road I noticed prominent bounces after the car would go over bump in the road when the car was decelerating to a traffic light. I felt a total of three bounces with the first being the largest, second half of first, third half of second, & fourth couldn't be felt. It was bumper to bumper traffic & going light to light. The bumps were raise sections of the road affecting all four tires. The bumps were not potholes. I emailed my salesperson the next business day of the problem with no response. My main concern is highway driving. One stretch of highway has cement slabs in an undulating pattern that I have driven over daily for a very long time at many different speeds & in many different driving conditions. My previous car would react by rumbling up & down. That sensation was constant over the years at any speed & driving condition. Once I cleared that section of the bad highway, my car would immediately stop. The first time I went over that same stretch of highway in my new car at an est. 60-65 mph, the car begin to oscillate harmonically (bounce rhythmically) & continued to harmonically oscillate (bounce) once I cleared that bad section of the highway for an additional minute. I estimated the total time at two minutes. The harmonic oscillation felt very consistent over that two minute stretch. Once I went over another bump the oscillation went stopped. The struts are supposed to dampen the oscillations. I brought it into the service department. The mechanic test drove it & said the suspension felt firm. The suspension checked out ok (no numbers given). It has a sport tuned suspension & was suppose to do this. The mechanic didn't drive the bad section of the highway because it was too far away. I will try to resolve this matter with the Hyundais field service engineer.

3 Steering Wheel problem of the 2004 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/16/2005

Hyundai Elantra GLS 2004 (1) no events led up to failures (2) between 15000-20000 miles ignition stopped working - fixed by Hyundai after we severely nagged them for days - car is less than 18 months old has 32,000 miles on it now clutch disk is supposedly burned out- I have never had a clutch burn out on me or anyone I know much less at a mere 32,000 miles want to charge me 300 to see if warranty might cover it; however if it doesn't they will charge me 800 or so to fix this problem car grinds when turning- Hyundai will not check it out, supposedly warranty also does not cover this. Steering wheel is completely falling apart vanity mirror cover fell off yes, all this happened within 3 months of each other. I am now completely afraid to drive my car. The gears do not catch well and are getting progressively worse. The reason I bought this car was for its amazing warranty. Come to find out the warranty doesn't cover anything at all. Hyundai did replace my vanity mirror. Now if only the freaking car worked! I will never buy another Hyundai.

4 Steering Wheel problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/09/2004

At highway speeds approaching 65 mph, steering wheel begins to shake. I was originally told by the dealership that the tires were out of balance or out of round. Had tires professionally inspected and balanced, and checked various times. . . . It is not the tires. I have lifetime balancing and alignment so the tires are balanced and aligned every 3 to 5 thousand miles. Replaced original (poor quality) michelins with high end firestones at 43,000 miles and vibration persist. You have to go above the speed limit, or way below, to stop your arms and hands from being shaken ridiculously. . . . . . Service manger at dealership and regional service manager told me the vibration was normal. The vibration might be normal for a paint mixing machine but not for a car. Called the 800-633-5151 number and was told by barbara that since the regional service manager had determined it was normal vibration there was nothing she could do.

5 Steering Wheel problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/22/2003

This vehicle is hazardous to be on the road. It has front end steering and suspension problems. It has a terrible vibration from 35 mph and up. If traveling on the highway the wheel shakes so badly that your hands go numb. I have had the vehicle in for service and repeated time over a two and a half year period, and the dealership has done nothing. I have also spoken with the manufacturers on several occasions, and have done nothing. It has gotten to the point that I had an accident, because of these problems. I now have a permanent injury that I will live with for the rest of my life, and they still do not care. I have 2 small children, and I am afraid every time I leave the house that something will happen with this vehicle, and one of my children get injured. Fortunately, with my accident I was alone. In my accident my steering locked and I hit a stone embankment at about 40 mph with the front end and my air bag also did not deploy. Unfortunately I am stuck driving this vehicle, when it is unsafe, and unfit to be on the road. It is a hazard to my family, and all others on the road with me. I sincerely hope something can be done to these dealerships, and manufacturers to ensure they are selling our consumers a safe and reliable vehicle.

6 Steering Wheel problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/25/2002

At highway speeds approaching 65 mph, steering wheel begins to shake. Have been told by several dealerships, tech reps, selling dealer, that tires are out of balance, or out of round. Had tires professionally inspected and balanced, and checked (off the vehicle), various times. . . . It is not the tires. See TSB 01-50-008, because others have had problems with this. That TSB blames it on the "radial variance" of the tires. . . . These are the stock michelins they put on the car, when purchased new. . . . . It their TSB is correct, they put the wrong tires on their new cars (it has not been proven to me that this TSB is correct, and that the radial variance problem is causing this). Please call 1-800-325-6604, to get them working on this. It is dangerous to drive this car on the highway (which we purchased it for). . . . You have to go way above the speed limit, or way below, to stop your arms and hands from being shaken ridiculously. . . . . This causes a hazardous condition for other drivers on the highway. Please help. Ts.
