1 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/01/2025

I own a 2017 Hyundai Elantra. The vehicle has developed an issue with the steering column worm shaft bearing, which is documented in Hyundai’s technical service bulletin 20-st-003h-1. When turning the wheel, the steering intermittently feels loose and unresponsive, creating a sensation of loss of control. This is especially noticeable during turns and lane changes. Hyundai has acknowledged this problem in a TSB, but no recall has been issued. Since this defect affects the steering system and can compromise safe handling of the vehicle, I believe it should be classified as a safety defect and covered under a recall. This issue poses a serious risk of loss of vehicle control and potential crash.

6 Steering problem of the 2021 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/28/2025

The horn never worked since I bought it in August 2023, I’ve been in a countless near accident situations where I was rendered helpless. I’ve had several instances where I get locked out of my car because the vehicle would not read the key. I tried fix the issue because I assumed it was a dead car or key battery but the same problems kept happening shortly after. I became aware of the issue with the horn not working, when I recently purchased the vehicle. I tried to contact the alm dealership salesman to report the issue and they told me he had recently quit. They mentioned bringing it back to the shop but it wasn’t guaranteed that the issue would be fixed.

8 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/21/2025

While it may sound bizarre, I can definitively demonstrate that whenever I am present inside a car, the car become very unstable and bouncy and unsafe to operate. Not only does it not steer straight the car also becomes incapable of coasting smoothly and is constantly racing or aggressively slowing down. I can’t be the only anomaly and whatever is causing this could be widespread and is certainly dangerous. I have found it to occur only with the cars which I am inside. I would like to demonstrate this in person if possible to an investigator.

9 Steering problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/23/2025

In the last month I started to hear a clicking sound when turning my steering wheel in either direction. I am told that this is a frequent problem with Hyundai Elantra and is caused by a flexible coupling breaking. I brought my Elantra to the dealer to take cre of some other recalls but was told that the coupling problem is not a recall issue. I do have a technical service bulletin from Hyundai on this issue and feel that since it happens frequently on the Elantra, it should be covered by the dealer or Hyundai corporate. Please advise as I cannot afford to pay for this repair as I am on disabilty with limited income.

10 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/18/2025

My vehicle was towed to manly Hyundai in santa rosa CA June 18,2025. The vehicle when driving steered all over the lane then locked up on me almost causing a crash. The dealership says it’s the electrical column assembly. My vehicle is a 2017 Hyundai Elantra but don’t see any recall on it and I am being charged $3400. 00. The red steering wheel light went on . I’m looking for a recall on this vehicle seems many others have had the same issue. I do not have any receipts yet since it was towed and parts are being ordered and work will start this week. As soon as I have paperwork I can forward it to you. Thanks for your help in advance. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

11 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/14/2025

This is a repeat incident. While driving, the speedometer stops working, tachometer, all of the collision warning systems start going through a self test, the check engine light comes on, and most concerning is the power steering. It becomes heavy, as if it is working at half power. The dealer kept the car for over a week recently, and they said that they were unable to duplicate the issue. It happened again while I was on a road trip , and I stopped by five star Hyundai in albany GA. The service advisor was aware of similar issues have occurred on Hyundai's, but that they were too busy to look at it. She wouldn't even come out of the building to look at the car and wasn't interested in looking at my video. I tried to upload video to this form, but was unable to do so.

13 Steering problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/31/2025

The vehicle is subject to manufacturer recall #127. I brought it to two different dealerships for the recall repair after confirming in advance that they had the necessary parts. However, after dropping off my vehicle, I was informed a few hours later that the dealership did not actually have the parts needed for the repair. I contacted Hyundai’s service center to escalate the issue, but they refused to take further action. Instead, they repeatedly instructed me to reach out to other dealerships. After contacting several other dealers, I was told that they either did not have the parts or the system capabilities to perform the recall repair. Despite my efforts, Hyundai has refused to escalate this matter to upper management, leaving the issue unresolved.

14 Steering problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/28/2025

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the steering wheel was very loose. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the contact was forced to grip the steering wheel with force with the front of the vehicle abnormally shaking. The contact depressed the brake pedal and the shaking of the front of the vehicle increased. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was advised that the steering rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 97,501.

15 Steering problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/01/2025

My steering wheel has been shaking and having a clunking sound when I accelerate over 60 miles, go over any bumps, and turn. I had my mechanic diagnose it and I was told the steering coupler was bad. I did some research to see if it was a recall and it wasn't. Then I saw on Hyundai. Com then I could check my VIN and verify if my vehicle qualified for the extended warranty for this issue. My vehicle qualified however after contacting customer service directly to verify, they advise me my vehicle did not qualify because of being over 100,000 miles. Prior to contacting them I saw that they had a statement saying that this issue was not safety related. I didn't believe that to be correct because my mechanic told me otherwise, and information I saw regarding google searches said the opposite. Also, my own experience whenever that shaking of my steering wheel occurs I literally have to use both of my hands to control it. Therefore I believe it is a safety issue that absolutely needs to be revisited as being such. I was advised on that call to take it to the dealership and have them diagnose it and advise headquarters directly however I made it clear that I did not want to have to incur a diagnostic fee when the initial diagnostic I had was free and I have the estimate breakdown from my mechanic. And I did not believe that there should be any diagnostic fee for a safety concern. I did advise them that I was going to contact NHTSA and advised them of this circumstance in order for it to be reviewed.

16 Steering problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/27/2025

I own a 2010 Hyundai Elantra that has experienced a sudden loss of power steering assist on multiple occasions. When this happens, the steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn, especially when maneuvering at low speeds or parking. The eps light comes on and stays illuminated. This creates a serious safety hazard, particularly when driving with children or in traffic. I am aware of Hyundai recall 127 (NHTSA campaign 15v100000), which addresses the same issue, but my VIN is not included. I am requesting that Hyundai investigate and provide the same repair remedy for vehicles outside the initial recall VIN range that are experiencing identical failures.

17 Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/15/2025

When ever I am turning my steering wheel in either direction there is a clicking noise. It started low and now the noise became loud even when I am going over bumps on the road. I went to a reputable certified shop and I am told it is my steering column bushing and I was advised that there is a recall on it but when I further investigate my car I do not see no recall. This is a problem a lot of people are having with the 2011 Hyundai Elantra .

18 Steering problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/07/2025

The contact's mother owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while his mother was driving at an undisclosed speed, the "power steering" warning light illuminated. The contact's mother had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the power steering assist module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had called the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 (steering); in 2018, and the vehicle was no longer under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

19 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/27/2025

The electronic power steering is not working in my 2017 Hyundai Elantra. My VIN# is showing as unaffected for this specific recall, however I am having the same issue that the recall is for. I have a code that came up for the electronic power steering. It is quite a coincidence.

20 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/20/2025

The horn stopped working in our 2024 Elantra. This is a widespread issue (see NHTSA complaints and reddit posts). I called ahead to verify with the san leandro dealership that parts were in stock to perform this repair under warranty (prior to scheduling appointment). We arrived and were told that parts were actually not available (after a 3-hour diagnostic). What changed? Hyundai issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) informing dealerships of how this issue is to be repaired (designating a specific part number, while excluding otherwise qualified Hyundai parts). Without TSB, the dealership could have performed this repair under warranty with the in-stock parts. The dealership could still perform the repair, but Hyundai would not reimburse them under warranty. With a[xxx] wife, I was unable to wait and return later for the warranty to cover the repair. I paid $429 to the dealership for the repair to be done with in-stock parts. I left the dealership with a genuine & working Hyundai horn, but it was not covered by Hyundai’s warranty. Hyundai has refused to reimburse us. Two key takeaways: 1 - Hyundai is denying there is a widespread issue while secretly telling dealerships how to address it. The unpublished TSB demonstrates that Hyundai is aware of a widespread safety issue, and is failing to issue a recall. The majority of nhsta complaints for this vehicle reference horn failure. This is a safety issue. I was involved in an accident where I could not warn another driver before the collision. 2 - the TSB is a mechanism by which Hyundai is refusing to perform repairs that should be covered by warranty. This is a violation of Hyundai’s stated commitment to customers that is not stated even in the fine print of the warranty. 21 Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/11/2025

Unknown but my car shakes and makes a loud grinding noise.

22 Steering problem of the 2024 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/26/2025

Towards the end of January, my car computer was reset because the car was telling me that I needed an oil change early and the dealership told me it could just be a computer issue. I then took my car to get an oil change and full vehicle inspection on February 24th, 2 days after that on the 26th I was leaving my school parking lot when the vehicle accelerated awkwardly when I was leaving out of a parking spot, I was then able to gain control back over the speed until the vehicle again abruptly accelerated and jerked to the left sending my car over a curb, deploying the air bag, and completely totaling out the vehicle.

23 Steering problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/25/2025

Unknown I had the lane assist feature on and was taking the second lane from right to turn off to exit when the alarm went off, the wheel turned itself and it started braking. There was nothing where it was trying to avoid and actually almost had me run into another by turning me left back onto the freeway while trying to stop. It’s never happened to me before and I take that way regularly.

24 Steering problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/21/2025

As I was driving about 25-30 mph when the front drivers side lower control arm snapped, resulting in loss of control and steering, which could’ve caused a major accident if driven on a highway/interstate at a higher rate of speed. The damage revealed the control arm had rotted from the inside and had broken from the bushing connected to the frame, with no indication of rust in the outside, which has been something that has documented with other same generation Hyundais. I have not been able to bring it to a dealer or mechanic to have it checked.

25 Steering problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/23/2025

I was driving normally down the road and all of a sudden I lost control and couldn’t turn my vehicle apparently the control arm rusted from the subframe, causing me to swerve hit a curb and cause more damage to the front end. Thank god I was on a not so busy street! I could have killed myself or someone else all because this company’s metal rusted out.

26 Steering problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/19/2025

2013 Elantra coupe se. The car wanders on the highway like a boat constantly left and right all over the lane and if/when you hit a dip or bump it really throws the car around! there's obviously issues with the suspension on a multitude of these model/year vehicles if not all of theml. It is very dangerous and needs to be addressed and recalled. I do not have an alignment issue as the tires brakes rotors and calipers are all new no dragging /pulling etc and the tires are properly pressured as well. Extremely well maintained car by the owner extremely poorly engineered by the maker! the steering coupler has been replaced also taking the play out of the wheel as those things are a small rubber "cog wheel" that wears completely to nothing causing severe play and a clunking noise in the wheel between the turning of left or right as that component acts as a spacer/gear/vibration absorber between the steering shaft and the steering assist helper motor gears these cars also were sold knowing they were piston slap engines yet still never issued a recall until years and multi millions of complaints later only to only cover certain years and models yet they all had the same engine. Imagine the idiocy! I will never purchase a Hyundai or a kia ever again rest assured! I do my research and homework on every potential item I'm looking into possibly getting yet nowhere at the time was there any info regarding they were piston slap engines turning these out by the multi millions and trying to hide the fact until they no longer could. Disgustingly sad that they do not stand behind there product!.

27 Steering problem of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/03/2025

When driving in bad weather the car started to slide when my husband tried to turn the steering wheel and the steering wheel locked not allowing him to turn the car to avoid the curb. My husband has driven in snow for years as he was born in upstate NY and he has never had a vehicle lock when sliding.

28 Steering problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

My car catched on fire after my steering wheel light keep coming on and off and my abs and break light was on couple days before it catched fire .

29 Steering problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/14/2024

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly after the steering wheel briefly jerked back and forth, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became regular. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the rubber coupling. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to technical service bulletin 17-st-002. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.

30 Steering problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/09/2024

When I was driving, the electronics steering light came on. The car started pulling hard to the right. Then stopped and drove normal but the light was still on. I park the car the next day the light was off drove fine then it came back on and was doing the same thing. I brought it to the mechanic he recalibrated the steering. Worked for about a week , then it came on started doing the same. This is a very scary and not safe. When you're driving and you lose steering for no reason. It gets expensive, bringing it to the mechanic trying to figure it out. This has happened two times and now the second time the car is going to the mechanic to fix this.

31 Steering problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/06/2024

My steering wheel started making loud rattling and clunking noise. This happened when I turned or slowed down or went over a bump. It got worse very quickly. I suddenly could not steer at all. So I ran into a pole. Thankfully it wasn't another car or a person. Many people have this same issue. This needs to be recalled ASAP. It's either the pinion and rack issue or the steering wheel issue.

32 Steering problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/06/2024

About 3 years ago the eps light came on. Brought it to the dealer who said it needed 3500. 00 dollars worth of work to replace the steering column. Refused the work and they reset the light. Now after checking I see this was part of a recall 127 . My car was checked and stamped fine so out of luck. Car works good for 3 years now it is doing it again. Just driving straight down the road and power steering stops working, then starts working. Right now steering is fine and the ps light is on all the time. Any help would be appreciated. Car only has 120,000 miles and is in great shape except forthe steering.

33 Steering problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/05/2024

Steering wheel makes clacking noise when turning left or right, especially if making sharp right angle turn or when parking. I think I noticed it first in early November 2024 while parking. Since then it has been occurring with greater frequency as well as both directions. I called a repair shop 2 weeks ago & was told it was a common problem with Hyundai's. I went to a different repair shop last Thursday, Dec 5th, 2024, for a tire repair & asked for estimate on steering issue. They told me it was a really big project to replace some sort of ball like piece & required taking the whole steering assembly apart. He said when it goes I'll loose steering & likely have an accident as a result. He said that as my car has less than 29,000 original miles on it (28,630), I should go to the Hyundai dealer as they should pay to repair it as it's a huge safety issue & shouldn't happen to such a low mileage car. I tried to go there but they'd moved & I didn't have a phone to query new location. At home I called and got vm for a man in service dept. Left msg. No one responded so I called again fri, Dec 6, 2024 & was put throughto a differentman in the service dept's vm & left another detailed msg, this time incluing VIN#. Now is Monday 12/9/24 & still no reply. I looked online & saw there was a recall for this vehicle from 2008-2010, but nothing came up when I entered my VIN on this nhsta site. I believe my vehicle should be included and I don't think I should have to wait until an accident has occurred, or have to spend thousands out if pocket to repair an issue that appears to be more widespread that initially considered. Can you help please? I prefer bring proactive and not incurring any damage to life, limb & property for my self, any potential passengers, or anyone else who might be harmed should I experience power steering loss. Thank you.

34 Steering problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/28/2024

The oil level burns down to next to nothing approximately every 2 months, with no oil light warning or engine light. However, the engine light does periodically come on but shuts down itself before able to get it checked. The same issues occured with my son's 2017 Hyundai which caused the engine to blow and catch fire. His was recalled and repaired. His was a different model. The oil burn on my car has occurred at least 3 times. The steering feels as though it is grinding at lower speeds an makes parking difficult as well. Both of these issues are most concerning.

35 Steering problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

My steering wheel is making. A clunking noise and I called Hyundai and informed them and they told me the extended warranty has expired since last year. Lots of Hyundai 2013 consumers complained about this issue and it’s an expensive fix. Please advice [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S.
