Recently, the power steering failed while driving few times. It happened also while starting the car. The eps light went on and the steering column wouldn't budge. I turn the car off and back on again, the power steering worked until it fails on road! I looking online and saw recall # 127 along with thousands of complaints and accidents service manager said that there was a steering column software update recall in 2015 done. I had no issue then. I got message yesterday saying it will cost me about $3,500 to have burnt out steering column fix. The steering column is burn out because it fails. This is such a clear case of major malfunction, evidenced by your 2015 software update recall and the thousands of online complaints, accidents and highway safety involvement, that I am stunned and dismayed that Hyundai won't repair it. I am asking you to please consider having the entire steering column repaired at Hyundai expense. I rarely drive the car and when I do, I am so light on it. I simply cannot afford to purchase a car at this time and refuse to pay that kind of money to repair that, which is it the fault of the manufacture. Please consider my request. I'm requesting NHTSA to investigate failures of several systems of Hyundai Elantra 2010: simultaneously failed/unresponsive braking, lurching/acceleration despite trying to push brake pedal, &failed power steering causing unsafe situation and accident in which air bags also failed to deploy despite 2 impacts to front end but form only allowed 3 parts of car affected. My husband pulled out of our garage front first @approx. 1-2 mph. When he tried to brake at end of driveway/check for oncoming traffic before entering road to park in front of our house. Brakes &power steering failed simultaneously as car lurched/accelerated forward. Car hit a van driving by &our vehicle bounced back into pole which sent car on sidewalk. Car continued to accelerate/lurch forward on sidewalk despite his foot on brakes. He continued to try to brake &steer but neither worked. Car hit neighbors wall/garage &car stopped. Just missed hitting a parent/child walking by. Air bags didn't deploy during either impact police came after accident. Didn't fill out report bc at time he he felt ok except for shaken up. He was in shock &does have pain& loss of mobility to neck/back. He's seeking treatment. It was in front of our house and a clear/dry day. No floor mats/anything were stuck under either pedal. I brought my 2009 Elantra (driven less than 42,000 miles) to a local Hyundai dealership mid July because eps was light on and I had been notified of a recall pertaining to the power steering system. The recall was reported addressed through software reset/update and eps light was off when I picked the car back up. Earlier this month the eps light came back on and I noted a brief clicking/knocking sound with temporary increased resistance as I turned the steering wheel in either direction both while moving or at a stop. The car was reassessed at the dealership Aug 23rd, I was told that an "internal failure of steering column" had been identified and that I would need to replace the full steering assembly for an estimated $2,244. 40. I asked for further details regarding the failure and was informed that the steering coupler needs replacement but also that the "hologram sensor" has malfunctioned, necessitating a full steering assembly replacement, and that this is unrelated to the previously serviced power steering recall. I have not had the repair yet but am warned that the car is at risk of unpredictable power steering failure.

I bought my car new in 2008 -- single owner all this time. Was driving the car about 30mph in residential area when all of sudden the eps light came on and power steering completely failed. Manually steered the car to nearby garage, where they found an error code in the electronic power steering module. Google search showed Hyundai had a recall for this, and this recall was performed on my car back in may. Started car back up, problem was gone, so brought car to Hyundai dealer, and they will run diagnostics and contact Hyundai for next steps. I called Hyundai myself and was given a complaint number: 8206849. Apparently what they did on my recall visit in may 2015 did not prevent this problem from happening. It was scary and dangerous to have happen -- this is absolutely a safety issue.
Power steering failed during a turn on a busy street. Car was almost impossible to steer but managed to get if off the road. Towed to Hyundai dealer - they just called and said they needed to replace the steering column.

In the last 2 weeks, the eps light has come on my dashboard 3 times, accompanied by the power steering failing. The first time it happened, I was in the middle of an intersection, turning left, and my power steering failed. The second time I was in my driveway, luckily not yet pulled out into the busy street on which I live. The third time was just today on the highway, and as I was going 65 mph, the power steering failed. The only way I've found to "fix" it is to turn off my car and start it again. Had I been going over the bridge near my house where there is no shoulder to pull onto where I could restart my engine, today I would have been unable to steer around the curves of the highway. This is not just a minor problem. This is a safety liability on the part of the manufacturer and needs to be addressed. I have read about many other people with the same car having this issue and Hyundai doing nothing about it. So far, only a handful of 2015 sonatas have been recalled for the exact same issue, but nothing has been done about the Elantras. I have contacted Hyundai regarding this, and they say that my VIN is not part of a recall, even though it clearly has the same problem as the recalled sonatas occurring repeatedly, and therefore I must absorb the cost of whatever it will take to remedy this problem. Again, this is a liability on Hyundai's part, and they should be responsible for fixing it at no cost to the consumer. Thank you for your time.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the power steering failed without warning. The failure caused the contact to use excessive force to maneuver the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed the steering column and steering column assembly needed to be replaced. The repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,594. Sr.
I started my car and the eps and esc off lights were illuminated, and I had no power steering. This was the second time this had happened since I purchased my vehicle used in 2011. The first time, shutting the engine off and restarting fixed the problem. I also took the car into the dealer at the time, and they claimed that the fix was an update to the computer. The issue didn't appear again until may 2014, and this time the power steering failed to work even after multiple restarts. I took it to the dealer and they said the steering column has failed an needs to be replaced, and will cost $2100. Not only does this defective steering column that I have seen multiple citations of in this database present a potentially large expense to Hyundai owners outside of their warranty, but a serious safety issue if the steering fails while the car is in motion, as I have seen in other cases. I was lucky it was just in my driveway. I contacted Hyundai directly about this, and they couldn't care less, and most certainly wouldn't cover it as a defective part, as I am 12k miles out of my warranty. They are clearly ignoring the safety and reliability concerns of their customers. Buyer beware.
As I was driving the vehicle the power steering stopped working making it very difficult to maneuver vehicle. I took it to dealer and they said it was either a software update needed or if that doesn't work the steering column. Will need to be replaced. . The software update was installed and appeared to work. Approximately one week later as I was turning a corner and it went out again nearly causing me to have an accident. It now needs a steering column which would cost around $3000. 00. I contacted consumer department at hundai corporate offices requesting a warranty decision review as I am unable to financially have this work done at this time. I told them it should be a recall since it is a very serious issue and sure to cause an accident. I went on line and there are multiple statements from others with this vehicle that have the same issues with the power steering failing while driving. I feel this is a very serious situation and a recall should be on this vehicle before injuries are caused. The response from hundai consumer department was they will not include it in the warranty and they are unable to help me.
The dealer replaced the steering column to resolve escalating problems with electronic power steering that failed intermittently and would no longer reset after turning the vehicle off and restarting the engine, rendering the vehicle inoperable. 127 miles after completion of the steering column replacement, the power steering again failed yesterday evening while entering the highway during rush hour. I reiterate my statement from the prior incident(s) that this is a serious safety issue - not only to the driver of the vehicle, but to other drivers as well. This long-time Hyundai promoter is about to become a detractor.

The power steering failed while driving my 2008 Hyundai Elantra at the speed limit on a 4 lane, non divided highway in rush hour traffic. I was driving my car to work in normal morning rush hour traffic. There was no warning. While moving at the speed limit, the steering wheel locked up and lost all power to the car. This is a dangerous situation. I had no prior warning of any type that the steering was defective or would fail. It failed while the vehicle was moving. This incident could have had very dire results.

23 may 2011, I own a 2010 Hyundai Elantra with 14,??? mi on it. As I was entering a curve on paved road at approximately 20 mph the electric power steering failed. I was able to maintain control using extreme effort avoiding oncoming traffic. I pulled over to the next safest area to calm down and regain my composure. The eps light was on and had no power steering. I looked under the hood for any sign of cause of failure and found nothing. Drove the car straight to the dealer and the service managers response when he tried to turn the wheel was "OH my". The dealership gave me a loaner car to drive since the Elantra was still under warranty. I called the service department on 13 June and they said they replaced a sensor and that didn't fix it and they were going to replace the steering column. 20 June 11, still waiting on repair of car. I returned the loaner because I no longer trust electric power steering no matter what anybody tells me. Yes the car is under warranty and the parts can be replaced. But, I am the sole provider for my family, I don't have a warranty nor any replacement parts and it cost a whole lot more to fix any damages to me than it does that car. Not to mention the person I met in that curve or their family.
This is a follow-up to odi number 10395729, power steering failure on a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. This second incident occurred three days and 26 miles driven after the initial repair by the dealership. In this case, I was idling in the left hand turning lane of a 6 lane divided highway, waiting in a line of cars for a left-turn green arrow. The steering wheel twitched, tried to rotate really, in my hands, then felt locked. I looked at the dashboard and the red eps light was on. I had researched Hyundai eps light problems on the internet since my first incident, and some posters recommended turning off the engine and restarting the car to activate the steering again. I tried this and the eps light did go out when the car restarted, and the feeling of steering wheel control returned. I was able to drive off the highway but got no more than 1/4 mile total before the steering locked again and the eps light was on again. I drifted to the curb and restarted the car again. The steering came back on again, and I proceeded about another 1/4 mile at slow speed before the steering locked again and the eps light reappeared. I restarted the car again and this time was able to drive the last block to my home and pulled to the curb. While idling there, the eps light came on and the steering wheel locked again. I called the dealer for assistance, and they returned my call and told me to call Hyundai roadside assistance for a tow. The dealership kept the car several days as they needed to order a part. The work order states '13090 sop part, replace steering column, part # 56310-2h300, shaft c1290 torque sensor abd'. In one month of driving since this repair, I have had no red eps lights, no steering failure. However, the steering wheel does continue to twitch on its own, sometimes while idling, sometimes while moving. I feel the dealership has treated me fairly, but I remain concerned about the long term consequences of this defect.
