1. The fabric on the seats is not colorfast. Any drop of clean water looks like a stain when it dries. 2. My steering wheel knocks when turned left and right, when in motion and stationary. It is the u-joint behind the break peddle from the steering column making a knocking/clunking noise.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a banging and rubbing sound coming from the steering column while turning in either direction. The vehicle was taken to werner Hyundai (252 capital cir sw, tallahassee, FL 32304) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering column was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,000.
May 2019 vehicle went in had the steering column replaced due to a rubbing sound coming from inside the vehicle every time steering wheel was turned whether in town or highway or parked. Nov 2020 crash avoidance system activated while stopped at a light no one in front of me at the same time noise started coming from the front of the car (rattling) when turning left and when hitting bumps, it was determined that the motor mounts had become loose damaging the lower control arm, struts and after tighten they became loose again needed to be replace. This took them month and half to find the issue as well as replacing the crash avoidance system. The car still does not drive correctly nor does it align properly only slightly off in the front but way off in the rear. Since picking the vehicle up 2 weeks later the steering column is made a pop sound and has started making the same rubbing noise when turning. I bought it new no accidents to date. Hyundai is repurchasing the vehicle. Very slow process not to mention concerned with the steering wheel locking up as seen here.

This car has a defect in steering column that is well known to Hyundai, the defect is caused by a substandard rubber bushing that has deteriorated and fallen out of a universal joint in steering mechanism, each time the steering is turned either way there is play and a clunking noise,I don't know if it has caused any accidents or not but any defect in steering is something all drivers should be concerned about,as for myself I'm always concerned when driving knowing that something is missing from steering mechanism.

Power steering stopped working. I had sqeaking noises when turning the wheel. Also shimmering over slightest bumps. Dealer estimate for new steering columns was about $2000. 00 . I was pulling out of a parking space when it froze. After I tuned of the car it worked. However I have read many complaints that this problem continues under normal driving conditions including highways. I feel the manufacturer should be responsible for this problem.
When driving the vehicle the power steering suddenly turns and stays off until the car is turned off and is allowed to sit for a while (hour or more). This may put me in danger. It has happened a number of times. If I am turning or driving on a curve (highway of city street) the steering wheel will suddenly want to go straight. It seems to be a common problem with the car. I was told by the dealership that the steering angle sensor built into the eps column assembly is at fault and to fix it the whole column needs to be replaced.

My steering wheel started with making a clicking sound and now the steering is pulling and quite frankly I am afraid that my car steering column will come undone and I will have an accident. This car has less than 40,000 miles on it and should not have issues.
Flexible steering couple falls apart causing steering wheel to. Become loose and make loud metallic clanking noise. Unable to provide pictures due to me not knowing how to disassemble steering column. Multiple complaints reported according to Hyundai forums.
My electronic power steering went out, thankfully as I was backing out my garage. The Hyundai dealer said the motor needs to be replaced but the motor is inside the steering column, so I need a whole new column. This runs around $1,600 including labor. After searching online, this appears to be a widespread issue with the Elantra. Even someone at the dealer said they don't know why there isn't a recall. I feel like one should be issued although it would be too late to save me from paying $1,600.
Eps light randomly came on again and locked my steering which is dangerous while driving on the road and parking, can't move the steering left or right. Issue has occurred before around the initial eps recall, took it then to the same dealer (sport Hyundai Dodge) where car was originally purchased to update or patch up fix. Recently went to the dealer to also fix the abs module recall and run a diagnostic on the eps. They stated it's the steering column that needed to be replaced. A $2100 repair, which they will file with the manufacture to see if it's covered. By reading these repeating complaints, something tells me that they will continue to ignore the problem till it's in harms way instead of preventing the safety issues. Currently had to give up working hours and in financial stress over a manufacturing problem that should have been addressed correctly in the beginning.
I started to hear a gridding noise that was progressively becoming louder when turning left or right while driving, fast or slow, highway or street, does not matter. I took the car in and the dealership had it for a week while replacing the steering assembly column (not 100% sure on exact names of parts replaced). I get the car back and the steering problems are worse. Now the steering wheel is moving around while driving. That lever that allows you to adjust the steering wheel does not work. I call Hyundai and am told they are booked and can not get my car in for almost a week. It gets to the point that driving is almost impossible so I decide to take the car in a few days early. As I'm driving on the highway going about 70mph the steering wheel drops and is flopping around and all power to the car goes off making steering even worse than what I thought was the worst it can get. Now the car is in the shop for the second time for steering problems and now an electrical problem.

Clipping/popping while turning steering column. Fix not covered by dealer and is known problem. Internet search shows cars with this issue back to at least 2015. To repair at mechanic/dealer is approx $400. With it fix concerned about wear and decrease in steering ability.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The contact managed to veer to the shoulder of the road turn the vehicle off and back on as the eps warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer myrtle beach Hyundai 1887 us-501, myrtle beach, SC 29577 (843) 626-3657 where it was diagnosed and determined that the eps electric power steering needed to be replaced. The dealer recalibrated steering column. However, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, no further assistance was taken. The failure mileage was approximately 77,300. Ck.
The steering column is making a clunking noise. May need to replace whole steering column in case it goes out.

The steering wheel column coupler wore out. This is an issue with these cars. Found this out by doing a web search on steering problems. No recalls on this inherit problem.
Tl the contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. While driving approximately 40 mph, the electronic power steering assist indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to len stoler Hyundai (11275 reisterstown road, owings mills, MD 21117, (410)356-7000) where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 77,000.
Tl the contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. While the contact's daughter was driving the vehicle, the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that there was abnormal movement in the steering wheel. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 (steering); however, the failure recurred almost a year later. The vehicle was taken to rockland Hyundai (located at 55 NY-303, west nyack, NY 10994, (845) 402-8623) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the electronic power steering module and steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
The eps light on the dashboard came on one day. I was worried about driving the car, so I went to a nearby mechanic first. He informed me there was an issue with my steering column and an open recall for my VIN. He encouraged me to go to a dealership and see if the recall was connected to the steering issue. I went directly to the dealership and had the recall performed. A few days later, the eps light came back on. Shortly after that, the airbag light also came on. I parked the car for fear of a possible incident. I was finally able to get the car back to the dealership. After initial diagnostics, I was informed the steering column needs to be replaced and the technician wants to start the airbag fix by replacing the sensor under the passenger seat. Each repair was over $2,000 with my grand total being just over $4,800 and no guarantee that it will be safe to drive at that point. I have read multiple other complaints about both of these issues and people with under 60,000 miles dealing with $2,000+ dollar repairs. If the steering goes out, it has caused accidents. That coupled with the airbag light, which notifies the whole airbag system has been disabled, makes this car totally unsafe to operate. Even out of their warranty periof now, these were reported issues that I was not made aware of when the car was purchased used in 2013. I contacted the corporate office and made my complaint. When I received a callback, I was told that because my car is over the mileage warranty and there were no open recalls, nothing could be done to help me. The $4,800+ repair bill is mine and mine alone.
When moving steering feel like alot of play in it. When turning left to right there is a click noise also. Feels like something is wrong on inside of steering column . This is happening when driving and if your just at a stand still in move steering.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While operating the vehicle, a clunking noise was present coming from the steering column. Also, the steering wheel was not secured and would move approximately 3/4 of an inch. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a bushing in the steering column was faulty and needed to be replaced. Holler Hyundai (1150 n. Orlando Ave, winter park, FL) was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 105,000.
Eps light recently came on. Took car to the dealer, dealer says that the whole steering column needs replaced. Car currently drives normally, but dealer says that power steering could be lost a any time. Cost for repair is $3500.
Clicking sound in the steering column. The dealer says that the problem is the steering coupler. . . A $4. 00 part. Then the dealer said that the fix is not under warranty and that it would cost $410. 00 to change this $4. 00 part. This fix is in fact listed as a recall on the same year Elantra sedan and the sonata models. Since this is a safety issue why is the repair covered on those vehicles mentioned above but not on the Elantra gt??? if it is a covered repair on an Elantra sedan why would it not be a covered repair on a Elantra gt sedan?.
While steering or making turns there is a popping sound in the steering column and a hesitation.

The steering wheel column needs to be replaced makes clicking noise. There was a recall on it back in 2015 not sure if it was replaced then. I was told they cant fix it the recall back from 2015.
The steering column fell into my lap when I was parking the car in my driveway. My repair shop told me that all the screws holding it in place had come loose.
Eps light is on. Recall #127 and #110 only updated eps software when if fact the steering column assembly needs replaced on over 300,000 cars recalled from 2008-2010. My car was taken to dealer on 5/7/2019 and eps software updated only!!!! case no. 15684240. Manufacturer needs to do another recall for safety reasons and safe lives!!! peoples power steering is being lost. Please read all complaints on the internet and contact corporate at Hyundai. Car has 97,000 miles on it. Eps software updated on 5/7/2015 with 79,000 miles. Hyundai should be responsible for repairing all steering column assembly, not the consumer at over $2,400. Before I purchased this car, I checked VIN and no open recalls. I would not have bought this car if I knew over 300,000 vehicles were involved and Hyundai would not fix!!! this is a safety issue for everyone involved.
Eps light came on. Took it to dealer and was told sensor needed to be replaced at a total cost of $2500 approx (replace entire steering column). Car has only 113k. Now I have no power steering. There was a recall to update the eps control unit which my mechanic says is just a patch and not a real fix for the problem. There are numerous complaints about this problem on a lot of Hyundai vehicles. My power steering was working intermittently and is now completely off, my car was parked.
When driving the vehicle, the eps light would arbitrarily turn on and go away when the ignition key is cycled off and back on. When the light comes on, it immediately becomes difficult to steer. The car reverts to manual steering mode and requires significant amount of effort to control. We have had the eps light turn on multiple times without warning while driving and putting us in dangerous, unsafe conditions on the road. Recently, the eps light is staying on and not going away. We visited the local dealer to report this issue and their diagnosis resulted in error codes related to the steering angle sensor-electrical, torque sensor main signal fault, ecu (brake system) hardware error, can time-out ems, and motor. When asked, they were not willing to perform an evaluation as per the technical service bulletin. They recalibrated the steering angle sensor and stated that if the problem reoccurs, we would need to return to the dealership to replace the steering column (part number 56310-2h250 as1) and pay full cost of repair (part and labor). This part number is listed as a replaceable item per the technical service bulletin. Please note that the dealership performed an eps s/w chk/ecu upgrade in 2015 when no issues were present and refuse to further assist when the issue is present when the recall campaign information letter in March 2015 clearly states that the final remedy has not been developed at this time. the diagnosis shows that a faulty part was installed by the car manufacturer, as stated in the recall, and the dealership is refusing to address the actual issue. Instead of solving the problem, they insist that we drive this potentially unsafe vehicle until the issue reoccurs. This is a safety related concern as there is no warning to when this issue will occur. Their recall notice states that the eps problems could result in an increased risk of a crash. .
I purchased this vehicle back in January of 2019 & when I purchased it the steering wheel made a clicking sound. I mentioned it to the car dealer & was assured it was nothing. After having my oil changed I was told my steering column needed to be replaced. This is quite disheartening as I have had the car for just one year & a half at this point. I was told to research for recalls in relation to this particular issues as it has been reported for other vehicles of the same make, model & year. I am afraid my car steering will go out while driving.
I have excess play in the steering wheel/bumping/clicking, when the engine is running. This causes a shimmy in the front end when braking. There have been no accidents or injuries so far. This seems to be a problem with the power steering. There is no excess play in the steering column when the engine is not running. There is excess play anytime the engine is running, the steering wheel will move several inches without moving the front wheels.
Flex coupling in steering column has come apart.
Steering makes clicking sounds, when moved from a center position, either left or right. Steering seems to 'stick' I. E. Does not move smoothly. The culprit is a "steering coupling" made out of plastic that couples the steering motor to the steering column. Knowing this is a defect, Hyundai quietly extended the warranty on its replacement to 100,000 miles. However they did not send out a notification letter to vehicle owners. Myself and many other Hyundai vehicle owners are very concerned that this would lead to loosing control of the vehicle while driving, leading to accidents and loss of life. This is clearly a defective design, and incorrect choice of coupling material, which is bound to get worn off often, since it is a plastic part sitting between two metallic parts moving against each other. This should be a defect that should be fixed regardless of mileage of the vehicle. Instead NHTSA has apparently allowed the company to just extend the warranty on fixing this; so it doesn't need to bear the expenses as vehicles go beyond 100,000 miles. It takes $400-$500 to fix mainly due to labor expenses, to replace a $5 part which is hard to reach. Nhtsa has to do a better job at protecting the consumers against issues which are a result of defective design which can lead to accidents and loss of life. Https://autoservice. Hyundaiusa. On 8/3/18, while exiting off highway, I was stationary at a stop light at top of ramp. When light changed, I tried to to turn left, but the steering wheel locked. It was near impossible to turn so I threw on my flasher to help avoid being rear ended. I made an appointment at Hyundai dealership as quickly as possible, 8/6 and they performed diagnostics tests which pulled up codes relating to malfunctions torque sensor, steering angle sensor, eps failure, ecu failure. At low mileage of 32,485 miles, the dealer recommended I replace the entire steering column and eps due to internal failure. Computer was unable to read torque to ecm. I promptly filed a complaint with Hyundai USA to take responsibility to repair. There are hundreds of complaints regarding major manufacturing defects with steering parts breaking, malfunctions, and recalls that haven't fixed the critical underlying problems that resurface. Eps module reset/replacement during recall in 2015 did not fix the problem. The dealer stated, the car is unsafe to drive. Why are major steering malfunctions allowed to continue with Hyundai USA?.
