36 Steering Column problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/01/2018

When I drove (in motion) my car over potholes or road edges, my car is drifting by side to side. I had this issue from the last 6 months. I showed my car to a different Hyundai dealership, but they could not find the exact reason and I spent around $2000 to replace all the parts as per Hyundai's dealership suggestion. After spending this much of money I still have a drifting issue in potholes. Recently, I contacted other Hyundai dealership . And they suggested me to replace steering column and universal shaft. I am very frustrated now and requesting Hyundai America to take care of this issue by their side because it is really a safety concern.

37 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/06/2018

They recalled eps in 2015 and I wasn't notified. Now they told me it was steering column problem and wanted to charge me over $2000 for this. The dealer won't even use the existing extended warranty to fix my car. I am not the only one who has this problem and it is very annoying.

38 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/19/2018

In 2016 I took my car in for "sticky" steering, in which the dealer replaced bushings in the steering column. On 5/19/2018, while driving forward at approximately 45 mph, my power steering went out and my eps light came on. I pulled over, turned the car off and back on but it didn't solve the problem. After having a mechanic look at it, was informed they couldn't diagnose it because Hyundai has proprietary codes on their eps and abs systems that doesn't allow them to diagnose the problem, forcing me to have to take it to the dealership. Not having the funds to have the car towed 20 miles to the nearest dealer, I drove my car with no power steering to the dealer. They informed me that my entire steering column needs to be replaced. My car has 84,000 miles and never been in an accident. Has been well maintained. They can not tell me the reason the entire steering column has to be replaced but that it does at my cost of $2,500! I found the recall of the eps but that is only repaired with a part, not the entire steering column. I have found online hundreds of other people with low mileage elentras having to have their entire steering columns replaced at their cost. Hyundai is aware of the issue but doing nothing about it putting their customers in danger.

39 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/18/2018

I brought my car into a Hyundai dealership because the eps light was on and the power steering was not working. This started happening intermittently over the past few months. At first they updated the software and it worked for a week. When it happened again, they said that I needed a new steering column at the cost of $2200. 00. On 8/1/2015, I brought my car to a different dealership for a recall on this specific problem. Recall 127. Supposedly, this problem was taken care of, but it was just postponed. I believe the current incident is related to the recall. I would like Hyundai to pay for the repairs. There are many complaints about this that I found in the internet. . Read more...

40 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Eps light is on, I have absolutely no power steering. I almost ended up in a wreck because I was unable to properly make a turn. I have been in contact with consumer affairs since March 2018 and not getting anywhere, but a response of "we have forwarded your complaint to a case worker" I have serveral emails I have sent and my call record. I have gone to a dealership, they want to replace the entire steering column at over a $2,000 cost to me. Then proceeded in trying to sell me another car. I will never buy another Hyundai, customer service is terrible. I work for a kia dealership and I understand recalls. If I were to receive a customer satisfaction survey, it would not be a good rating. I am not pleased with Hyundai. . . The recall was only a reprogramming of the steering software. . . That did not work for my Hyundai. If I don"t get some kind of resolve in this matter I will be obtaining legal counsel. Replacement of the steering column (which is recommended by Hyundai dealership) should be included in the recall. The link at the bottom says when did this happen. . . 12/05/17 it will only let me enter today's date.

41 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

There were no issues with the car until eps (red) and esc off (yellow) lights came on when the car was started one evening, and in turn the power steering was lost. Vehicle was driven earlier in the day without any problems. It was parked for about 30 minutes or so, and when it was turned on again the lights came on and the steering wheel felt like it was locked. It is very difficult to turn the steering wheel at low speeds. Vehicle was taken to a local Hyundai dealer where error codes c1260, c1604, and c1513 were diagnosed. The dealer performed the steering angle re-calibration and the ecu software update, but the errors persisted. The dealership stated that electronic power steering column and the stop lamp switch needed to be replaced. These exact two parts were a subject of two separate recalls for this vehicle (campaigns # 110 and 127) and were repaired/serviced in 2015 and the recall was closed. It is very strange that both of these parts would fail again without any notice, particularly the electronic power steering column, considering that the car only has 47000 miles and this part was repaired in 2015.

42 Steering Column problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/03/2018

Ta kata recall, my steering wheel column rattles and shakes when I am driving. It sounds like the steering wheel is going to fall off. The steering wheel feels loose.

43 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/22/2017

In my steering wheel it makes a clunking noise. I brought it into a service station and they told me it needed a flexible coupling gromt. I didn't do this it is all the way down in the steering column. They told me it should be a recall because it is nothing I did. It does the noise when I am sitting still. If you turn the wheel it sounds like it is catching on something.

45 Steering Column problem of the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/10/2017

Hello purchased 2015 Elantra used with 29,000 miles had steering issues along with bad tires,we experience a situation in the steering like the car cannot drive straight without making constant left or right adjustments in the wheel to keep in the lane, almost like a bicycle chain slipping on the sprocket as an example, we did take in for vehicle inspection 3 times, they said nothing wrong first time and just tightened steering column, still was faulty, so scheduled another appointment, this time a 4 wheel alignment and new tires would solve this issue, did put 4 new tires and skipped the alignment and had called Hyundai motor America corporate, they called service manager of car dealership directly to do complete vehicle inspection, nothing was wrong according to the master technician, so evidently it was going to be faulty and it is still having steering issue, as it is the design of the car for this year as mentioned by service manager. The corporate person I contacted is very seriously concerned about the safety of the vehicle, but dealership is DE sensitized I think to the situation, this is my last attempt for possible consideration, along with filing a complaint with the ftc with the issue and sales never provided the monroney window sticker, I have no comparison of the window sticker quoted sales price versus contract sales price and optional and standard equipment. As this issue is serious in my concern is driving on the highway with this situation, we do notice as well driving in town, at the present time we have to much invested in the car otherwise would trade for a newer model of the car as we did rent the 2017 Elantra se model and this issue is not apparent in the new vehicle, a noticeable difference can be felt in the newer car. Perhaps something in the steering in the 2015 is faulty or just wears out prematurely, thanks for accepting this complaint.

46 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/25/2017

The steering in my 2012 Elantra sticks while driving on straight on straight roads at speeds over 40-50 mph. This vehicle is equipped with electronic power steering and it feels like a magnet breaking free from a metal surface when trying to navigate. A resistance is always present at higher speeds. Constant correction is mandatory or I feel the steering wheel won't break free. This is a very dangerous situation. Hyundai advised replacing the motor driven power steering column at my cost of $1300 parts and labor. I have had the steering coupler replaced for $100. This is not the fix for this problem. The clockspring issue is also not a fix. I've seen many complaints of this issue on the forums. This is present on several model years with low and high mileage vehicles.

47 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/28/2017

From parked position, I turned the car on but the steering wheel would not move. The eps light was on. The steering would not work in manual mode either, it was completely locked. Vehicle was towed to Hyundai service where they diagnosed need for new steering column. (cost $2400!) the car had only about 83,000 miles. The previous steering recall work had been done in 2015 (software problem?) luckily I was not driving at the time this happened. Online I see other drivers who had this problem and it caused a crash.

48 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/05/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the eps indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. A dealer was not contacted. 49 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/12/2017

Eps light kept coming on and power steering was lost. This happened several times and was corrected by turning off the vehicle and restarting it. It occurred driving on interstates and during local driving for several days before taking it to a dealer. Vehicle was taken to camelback Hyundai, phoenix, az for evaluation. Write up from dealer summarized: eps light is on, code c1290 torque sensor main signal fault was discovered. Dtc found, eps c1290 torque sensor main signal fault. Search for TSB and found TSB 12 st 001, attempted eps reflash and found that it is not applicable to vehicle due to ecu for the mdps id different. Current rom id #4hdash02. Techline case # 2017051202870. Per diagram flow chart the torque sensor is inside the mdps/column. High resistance inside the torque sensor which is built in inside the mdps column. Replaced mdps column and performed calibration. Recheck for codes and no other dtc found? dealer contacted Hyundai about replacing the steering column and it was approved. Not sure if the VIN was included in the recall based on the dealer needing to call for approval.

50 Steering Column problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

52 Steering Column problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/25/2016

When turning steering wheel there's a click or popping noise. Was told by dealer it is steering column bushing and repair would be over 400 dollars. The car can be sitting idle or being driven when this occurs.

53 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/21/2016

Driving my car on the highway when out of no where my eps light came on and my steering locked up. I cannot turn the wheel and almost caused an accident. After pulling over I turned car on and off but the power steering will not return. I see that Hyundai already issued a recall for this for my car year, but my VIN wasn't included. The Hyundai dealership wants to replace the entire steering shaft and column and says that it doesn't apply to the recall.

54 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/08/2016

The steering column contains a hard plastic "coupler" as part of the power steering motor. That hard plastic deteriorates over the course of 5 or 6 years and, when it fails, the driver will lose the ability to steer the car. Although this part on my car has not yet failed, I cannot afford the $499 that the dealer wants to charge to make this repair. I feel this should be a safety recall item.

55 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/30/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the steering column functioned abnormally and made an abnormal noise. The failure occurred without warning. 56 Steering Column problem of the 1999 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/27/2016

I have a 99 Hyundai Elantra 4 door. Last week the steering column caught on fire while it was being driven. More specifically, I was at the time in the hardee's drive thru when the smoke and flames started. I was able to get my car to roll out of the drive thru and into the parking lot. I have spoken to a few mechanics who say that it seems like it was a short in the electrical system in the steering wheel. It melted all of the steering column, dash, cracked the windshield with the heat, and other fire damage. The car is now totaled and undriveable. I am a single mother of 2 kids and this was my only means of transportation. Also about a year ago, I was in a head on collision that was not my fault, and the airbags did not deploy in the steering wheel. I had contacted Hyundai afterwards, but they said that the car was fine and not to worry. I have no way to scan my documents, but I have a police report as well as several emails from Hyundai from last year, as well as pictures of the damage.

57 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/16/2016

At 59,894 miles the steering column felt very unattached. Went to the dealership and was told that a part had to be replaced. The part was replaced at a cost of $345. 10 labor and $10. 47 for the part. My husband looked up on the web and found this to be a common failure item and questions were asked Hyundai consumers affairs ( case # 9600787) to no avail. My husband ordered the part off ebay and found that the material was not the same that they removed from my car ( they gave me the old part). The new part looked the same as the old one, even had the same number but it was much firmer and more rigid than the original part. I asked Hyundai consumers affairs several times if this part were not replaced could it lead to an accident. No reply. Reading on the internet this seems to be a common 60,000 mile problem on this car and several others in the Hyundai/ kia corral. I believe that there should never be a steering problem in every car produced by manufacturer for the life of the car and this problem is well documented. The manufacturer should come to a fix that provides safe driving on all its cars for the life of the car which should be more than 60,000 miles. In my 45 years of driving I've never experienced such poor quality which could have dire consequences. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

58 Steering Column problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

My 2011 Hyundai Elantra is under Hyundai recall 137. My vehicle has been at the dealership for regular service since 8/31/16. I mentioned the esc was malfunctioning and the service advisor indicated it would require diagnostics at an additional charge. They diagnosed the problem and estimated by phone the repair would be about $1,700 because the yaw sensor of the esc system had failed and damaged the steering column now needing replacement. I asked they request a goodwill repair since the car was just out of the 5 year bumper to bumber warranty and awaited notice. Meanwhile I reviewed the internet for the Hyundai repair issues and found my car was on Hyundai recall 137 for the esc system. I noted the dealers were supposed to be repairning this issue at no charge to customers under the recall. My dealer had not advised me my car was under recall nor made mention until I told the service manager. I am still without my car or a loaner as the dealer tries to get from Hyundai USA an authorization to repair my car.

59 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss power steering. The power steering warning indicator illuminated. 60 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/26/2016

Vehicle was took in to dealership last 4/22/2015 for eps recall NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 and Hyundai recall 127. They completed a software update. The recall does not fix the problem on 5/26/2016 was driving the 2010 Elantra and eps light came on causing loss of steering capability. Called Hyundai they said it was not part of recall take to dealer. Dealer on 6/1/2016 stated that the software update was done but did not fix eps steering issue and would need to replace steering column $2150. The recall obviously did not fix the problem and after doing research online have noticed many others are having the same issue. If a recall is to fix the problem the recall should be done fully and correctly not cheaply and halfway. The eps causes stiff steering making it impossible for a person to steer. This could lead to many accidents and possibly death. The light comes on and immediatley with out warning the steering is automatically gone. While driving I was almost in an accident because after losing steering I tried make a turn off the main road into a subdivision to get off the main road. As I was turning at a very low speed below 5 mph I was unable to stay in my lane and a car was exiting the subdivision. Although there would be minor damages, this could be different if I was on the highway at an exit coming around a turn. The loss of steering is unsafe and I do hope that the right measures are eventually taken to resolve this issue before someone is killed. The vehicle has less than 45000 miles on it.

61 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

On Thursday 5/19/2016 while driving to work in the a. M with the slightest movement to the steering wheel I noticed it was making a clicking sound and feels like the steering wheel is catching (for lack of a better term)when the click occurs and you are moving the steering wheel back the other way. Whether moving steering wheel to right or left but not when making a complete turn. I checked on the internet found a lot of complaints for my year and 2011 sonatas with the same problem. It seems to be a coupling in the steering column. I called the dealership I use and was told by the warranty administrator they know all about the problem but the repair wont be covered under warranty since I am out of basic. I asked if it is dangerous and was assured that is is just noisy.

62 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/29/2016

Was driving down the hwy and had to stop for a stop light as I pulled away the esp light came on turning off my power steering causing me to have to stop and try to pull over to turn car off to reset the esp light so I could turn my car safely I had to do this several times it have to make a 90 degree to turn on my road or off on to the hwy. I took it to the dealer and they said that it was a safety issue but was not on recall the part to fix my car ended up costing me 2100. 00 for a part that should have never gone out. I had to replace the whole steering column. For a part that was in the steering column. I contacted Hyundai costumer service and they said that my car was out of warranty but I have went on there complains and see that this has been going on for awhile they have complaints for 2009 and up to 2012 I told Hyundai that it was not that it was not the warranty I was complain about and that it was a safety issue I then contacted the bbb as instructed to to hear the same thing I thank that this issue needs to be addressed before some one gets hurt it is all ready costing consumers thousand of dollars to fix after hyundia states that there vehicles are safe it is not safe when you loss your power steering while trying to make a turn a can't turn the steering wheel. I have all the information and e-mails that I communicated with Hyundai and the bbb if you need it I can e-mail it to you.

63 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/03/2016

Please note that my vehicle has already been serviced at the dealership for NHTSA campaign 15v100000 (Hyundai recall 127). While driving between 34-45 mph, I heard a subtle click from either my steering column or behind the dash, which was immediately followed by illumination of the eps warning light and complete loss of power steering assistance. The vehicle became very difficult to steer, and remained in this condition until I reached my destination , which was about another 30 minutes worth of driving time. I imagine that some younger/weaker drivers might not be able to physically steer the car while in this condition, but I was able to manage. The car was left in a parking lot for about 8 hours, at which point upon starting the engine, the eps warning light turned off and power steering was again fully functional. The dealership said my car had already been serviced for the power steering recall 127, and it would cost $120 to investigate. I did not bring the vehicle in for this diagnostic. The problem appears to be an intermittent problem, and has not yet recurred.

64 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/18/2016

My teenage daughter nearly got into an accident when the power steering completely stopped working while she was driving. We see that Hyundai has had recalls on the torque sensor/steering column but informed us that our car was not covered under recall. Hyundai advised our Hyundai dealership to completely replace electric power steering column and eps column in order to insure safe driving. This cost us $2,260. 75 on a car with only 28,000 miles. We cannot believe that Hyundai is not standing by its product and only doing "selective recall". We avoided a very serious accident which would have resulted in dire consequences for Hyundai. Please help us expand this recall and recoup some of our expense. We will never purchase another Hyundai. A company that manufacturers and sells dangerous vehicles should not be allowed to continue.

65 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at a low speed, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. The contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle. The electric power steering (eps) warning light illuminated. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 15v100000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 64,900. Oo.

66 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/27/2015

The steering column made a knocking sound when turned. You could hear noise when vehicle was stationary and in motion. Took it to dealer and had the flexible coupling (part 56315-2k000-fff) replaced. The service manager said the part was melted and torn up. The car mileage was 79944.

67 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

Last week the day after dlst ended, I used by headlights for the first time in months. This seemed to coincide with the start of the clicking of my steering wheel while driving. I stopped & talked w/ a mechanic, he said a dealer would have to do a costly repair because it involved the computer located in the steering column. It would probably need replacement. I am worried it may be a safety issue. He said it was not but I decided to check recalls.

69 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/27/2015

I noticed when tuning the steering wheel, that it felt like there was a ball rolling back and forth in the steering column and it made a strange soft "thud". I called the dealer and was told it was probably the steering column coupler going bad. I took it to my mechanic who agreed with the diagnosis and he also printed out a technical safety bulletin stating that the coupler is defective and would need to be replaced if a "thud" or "clicking noise" appeared. I was told this was not a safety issue but at the same time I received a recall letter regarding the electronic steering software. The recall states that the computer could get confused and stop the power steering which would result in the manual steering of the vehicle. Since I was out of the 50k mile warranty they would not be able to repair the steering coupler under warranty. It will cost me $260 to get that repaired. The steering software is back ordered and I won't be able to get that fixed until after may 22nd. I feel that the steering coupler issue is dangerous in that I may not be able to steer the vehicle once it finaly goes bad. I want to know if this is a safety issue.
