2 Steering Failed problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/11/2019

It is an outrage that Hyundai does not respond to this issue and that NHTSA is letting them get away with it. There is a small plastic item which sells for about $6 on amazon which is failing on a huge number of Hyundai vehicles. I am referring to the steering coupler. It is causing a clicking when turning the steering wheel whether the vehicle is moving or not. If not addressed in a timely manner, apparently this can lead to steering failure. I believe kia waived the 100,000 mile limitation on the replacement of this item, Hyundai refuses to do so. It is labor intensive, requiring the removal of the steering system and dealers charge hundreds of dollars to do the job. My local dealership's service department agreed that since this part's failure is so common, NHTSA ought to come in and force Hyundai to fix it in all their vehicles, even if they have over 100,000 miles on them.

5 Steering Failed problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/07/2018

While driving at a moderate speed of 45 mph my 2013 Hyundai Elantra 2 door coupe suddenly experienced excessive play in the steering wheel. This sudden failure caused the steering to hesitate and be a little erratic. Fortunately I was able to go the few miles to home without incident. Upon taking the car to my local Hyundai dealer, they immediately knew what caused the problem without even examining the car, a defective steering coupling in motor driven power steering (mdps). My vehicle has only 11,750 miles and is four months past the five year overall warrantee when the steering failure occurred last month. It certainly was not due to excessive ware. Some car owners were advised by letter from Hyundai and kia of the pending problem I was not. Any steering defect is potentially very dangerous and this one is pervasive across product lines. This problem is serious enough that it is recognized by an extended warrantee by Hyundai and kia in various models of Elantra, sonata, forte and other models produced from 2007 2015. Search website Hyundai steering coupler. This problem is also recognized by the manufacturer's online website Hyundai-forums. Com as far back as 2007. The old part was replaced by a newly engineered part in 2015, part number 56315 2k000fff. However, this safety action does not apply to my Elantra 2 door coupe, which uses the same part. Perhaps this is due to insufficient complaints filed, or lower production, and limited years that the coupe was produced. This safety information needs to be disseminated to all Elantra owners.

10 Steering Failed problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

The steering wheel makes clicking sounds as it turns, sounds as if something is breaking or already broken inside. I looked up this issue and it appears to be fairly common in many Hyundai vehicles. It is,an expensive repair. I believe Hyundai should cover the cost of repair but apparently based on complaints I've read, they do not. It also appears that this can lead to steering failure if I'm understanding what has been written about this. I can't afford to pay for this repair so I'm hoping it will eventually be a recall. This clicking takes places continually as I drive and turn the steering wheel. I have about 53,000 miles on my car.

11 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/30/2016

In October 2012 I was driving on Lincoln drive in phila. I was going around the first corner (to the right). Once the turn was complete, I attempted to turn the car in the other direction but the car kept going right. My car ended up spinning 270 degrees before it came to a stop. I turned the car off while I gathered myself and turned the car back on again. A cop checked on me to see if I was ok, then I went about my business. Thankfully there was no damage to my car or others. Fast forward to 11/30/16. I was taking the backroads to work like I normally do. I made a right turn onto a road then attempted to straighten the car out. The car kept going right, so I had to yank the steering wheel to get it straight gain. A few miles down the same road I was going around a bend to the right. Once again the steering got stuck in one direction and I almost lost control of the car trying to get the car straight again. I went to a local mechanic to check out the problem. They told me that they couldn't duplicate the problem but it may be related to a power steering recall repair that had been done my car in April 2015 and that I should go back to the dealership. I went to the dealership that performed the repair and the said that the motor in the steering column is failing due to age and mileage of the vehicle I needed a whole new steering column. Total bill: $2400. I contacted the manufacturer and the agreed with the dealership. In order to get my car back from the dealership I have to pay a $115 diagnostic fee and sign off that I am driving a "potentially dangerous" vehicle.

When vehicle is traveling at highway speeds above 40 mph the steering sticks at center position. Need to over steer to get vehicle back into a straight line on highway. Told the dealership and they brushed it off as a no defect. This problem is more than just a nuisance especially driving on snow and ice. Definitely a major safety concern and should be addressed ASAP. Problem seems to get worse as the engine warms up. Possible steering control module failure, unknown at this time.
