1 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/18/2024

Excessive oil consumption caused the pcv sensor/actuator (exhaust camshaft timing oil control valve) to fail. While the vehicle is still operable, the failure causes engine timing to change resulting unpredictable losses in power during acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, and incomplete combustion passing through the catalytic convertor posing a risk for future component failure. In the four months that the vehicle is operating in this condition, with its check engine light on, I have had two near collisions while attempting to merge into roundabouts and freeway entry. Fortunately, both were avoided. I no longer attempt freeway entry during rush hour. Two independent service repair shops did a computer diagnostic test and confirmed the problem with the pcv components. They suggested that the excessive oil condition be corrected first. Otherwise, any replacement components will continue to fail. Excessive oil consumption appears to be a chronic problem in the Hyundai 2. 4 l engine. The engine and drivetrain is covered under a 10 year or 100,000 warranty. A year earlier the dealership performed a controlled test when the vehicle only had 60,941 miles, where the initial oil loss was 2. 5 quarts per 1,000 miles. An oil chamber combustion clean, where solvents are used to remove excess carbon was performed. It temporarily reduced the oil consumption to . 7 quarts per 1,000 miles. This is still requiring a replacement of about 2 quarts of oil between routine oil changes in a 5 quart system. The dealership indicated that it passed. About 3 months later the oil consumption increased to 1. 0 quart per 1,000 miles and 8 months later the pcv components failed. If the dealership did the right thing and repaired the engine to eliminate oil consumption, everything would have been fine. I am still trying to get the dealership and Hyundai to honor their warranty. For excess oil consumption. With it the pcv components are also replaced and all is good.

2 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/21/2021

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport. The contact stated that while driving 63 mph, the cruise control was activated, and the rpm fluctuated between 2,200 and 3,500. Additionally, there was a burning odor detected, and lots of smoke was coming from the exhaust pipe that filled both directions of the street. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the pcv valve had carbon and that the spark plugs were corroded with carbon. The dealer performed an oil consumption test but did not complete the test due to the spark plugs needing to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the pcv valve and spark plugs needed to be replaced. The dealer removed the pcv valve; however, the vehicle was not repaired. Prior to the failure, the contact had an engine block code that was reset twice without repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. However, the manufacturer notified the contact that the case was closed and was sending out documents to the contact. The failure mileage was approximately 128,127.

5 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/14/2018

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe is eating over 1 quart of oil every thousand miles. Car has 150000 all highway miles. Pcv was replaced and did not remedy problem. Case worker was very rude and cut me off after they said they will do nothing to help me out. I drive 900 mile to take care of elderly father and no longer trust this car. I still owe money on it and don't know what to do. I'm sure this is one that has metal shavings in the engine. Hyundai refused to even check it out. Shame on you Hyundai!.

6 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/07/2018

SUV stalled out on expressway at 50mph. The engine made a loud tapping noise then engline and oil light appeared on dashboard. I coasted down the exit ramp nearly being hit by merging traffic. The brakes became hard and costed to stop sign. I was able to get to next block to my home by placing car in park and restarting . The engine at this point sounds like a woodpecker tapping on wood. My vehicle has been towed to dealership and awaiting warranty repair. Authorization. This event mirror the recall issued by Hyundai and NHTSA#17v-226. I took the car in for this recall and was told 30min later that my engine was affected. I found out that they should have taken my crankcase off not just do an oil change. I am still waiting on world Hyundai to inspect my vehicle.

7 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 11/24/2017

Driving car at 25 mph - loud bang in engine area followed by short burst of banging. Car thru a connecting rod thru the motor block. This is a 2012 awd sante fe model - here is the connection this engine was made in alabama the 2. 4 ltr four cylinder and was recalled due to debris in engine crankcases. . . . . The sonata was the recall. This same engine is in my sante fe. My mileage is only 59+ k miles. They wont replace it. Your NHTSA reported this on setember 25, 2015, a report written by jon linkov of consumer reports, this same engine was produced for sante fe, kia optima, kia sorrento etc. Dont you think that this 2. 0 ltr and 2. 4 ltr "theta ii" engine, which in sonatas alone was a 470,000 car recall. . . Is the very same engine that is failing in other models of kia and Hyundai. This catastrophic engine failure at only 59k miles could have killed my daughter if she was on the freeway. Your report states this engine is the same engine built in the same us mfgr plant in alabama and that it was also used in the Hyundai sante fe my vehicle- between their production of 2009 and 2012 - still a coincidence --- I dont think so. There are numerous reports of this engine failure in the internet and the pricing gauging of the consumer from $4,500 to over $8,000 when this defective engine should be replaced from Hyundai for free. They are hiding the truth here look at this NHTSA written report. I dont have specific photos but can get them. Today the Hyundai dealership on rt 130 burlington looked at my vehicle and declared that I need a new engine and then suggested a used low mileage engine. I want a new replacement just like they replaced in the sonatas with the very same engine, if you can help me at all or reopen this can of worms that Hyundai is leaving under the rug it would help other people who have been hurt by Hyundai. 8 Crankcase (pcv) problem of the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

This vehicle has been had a fluctuation idle for over a year. It has been to the dealer for service on this issue many times. No codes are every thrown. I brought the TSB about idle issues to the dealer's attentions. They said this was only for certain error codes. Hyundai USA was directly contacted about this issue. No repairs were made for this issue. The vehicle has the 3. 3l v6 engine. Se trim level. The engine stalled when decelerating from a highway speeds to a stop. It stalled before the car stopped. It restarted and drove after that. No check engine light. I stopped at the dealer that same day. I had them check the electrical system jsut to be sure that was not the issue. Battery, charing, etc all tested fine. I have the printout. So the vechicle did not show a check engine light the dealer offered no other assistance. It is clear from searching the internet that many many people have an issue with Hyundai vehicles around 2009 stalling. Most all of these people report the issue with no codes. So the dealer is limited in what they can do. They talked about ecm updates (firmware), and a fuel system sensor, and the crankcase senor. This is clearly a large issue putting people at risk. The NHTSA and ntsb should launch a full investigation, and find a real solution. Issue a TSB at a minimum, or a recall if needed.
