4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 07/26/2012

I was driving on the freeway, and noticed a ticking sound. Over 2 miles it became progressively worse until it was a loud knocking. I had to exit one freeway, and merge to another, before I could get to an actual exit. Upon trying to accelerate to speed to merge, the knock became severe, I lost compression, and the SUV died. There was a puff of smoke out of the exhaust and I rolled to the shoulder. After being towed to the dealership I found out that the #4 rocker arm had shot through the engine block causing a hole in the engine.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 10/10/2010

The vehicle for the last 3 years was not getting the gas mileage suggested by manufacturer. It was taken repeatedly to dealer where we were told, "everything checked out just fine". All maintenance was done as required by dealer". As car became more sluggish and finally quit running altogether- we took it to an outside mechanic and learned that the catalytic converter had gone bad. I checked the internet and this is a common complaint with this vehicle- dealers are repairing transmissions and emission controls and customers are still complaining about bad gas mileage, sluggish vehicles. Now that the catalytic converter has been replaced- the car is getting the correct gas mileage and running better.

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

This same problem has occurred twice. Once with 850 miles on the vehicle and again with 46,000 miles. Hyundai Santa Fe 2007. Traveling at 70 mph the engine totally shut down and would not restart. Auto was towed to dealer each time and restarted upon unload. Hyundai cannot find problem nor does diagnostic computer indicate any problem has occurred. Fortunately there were no accidents associated with this problem but 7 hours of time and forced hotel stays were a result.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

Failure Date: 06/23/2010

My 2002 Hyundai 2002 sante fe has a 2-part catalytic converter. Hyundai has a warranty--required by federal law, I understand--that covers this for 8 years, 80,000 miles. My car is within that criteria. The second converter broke off, and neither now work. Hyundai and its dealer, marhofer Hyundai of cuyahoga falls, ohio, refuse to honor the warranty, because the main converter would work if the second, and an entirely new exhaust system, were installed. The car is undriveable, sounding like a truck and spewing exhaust. Another shop is replacing this, and the owner told me his vendor has just sold five of these converters/exhaust systems. The shop just put one in on a Hyundai sante fe, and mine will make seven in a small city (akron) in a very short period of time. Yet Hyundai will do nothing, and marhofer wants $2,000 for the work. This problem is a safety issue because exhaust from the broken converter could enter the vehicle and cause injury to the driver and passenger.

The contact was concerned with the toxicity of the gas and its affects on her and the passengers in the vehicle. The VIN was not available. The current mileage was approximately 130,000 and the failure mileage was 120,000.
