I went grocery shopping on wed April 21,2021 came out tried starting my 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe and it wouldn't start I proceeded to try again and it started making this high pitched noise ,peaked out really loud a puff of smoke came out from underneath my hood and the car was completely dead. I had it towed to my mechanic where he replaced the starter thinking that was the problem which it wasn't he informed me the engine was seized up . I then had the Santa Fe towed to the Hyundai dealership where it was purchased new from the original owner all service from day one has been done at this Hyundai dealership we bought this car knowing the service records and history of car we also knew it came with a 10 year 100000 mile drive train warranty. Motor failed at 96128, would of been covered under manufactures drive train warranty if I was original owner I was told. After doing research we have discovered this is a common problem with the Hyundai Santa Fe motors locking up. Service writer advised us to contact Hyundai directly which I did my case #18222696 was told someone would call me within 3-5 business days which I haven't heard from anyone.

After getting gas, I noticed a strange sound coming from my car. I dropped it off with my mechanic who recognized this as a Hyundai gdi engine having defects. I had the car towed to a Hyundai dealership that confirmed the bearings were worn and engine rod was almost through the engine. Hyundai has refused to cover expense to repair.

15 miles from home in luverne, al 36049 on 2/1/2021, engine light came on and engine sounded like a mis-fire. Had oil changed at huffines Hyundai, plano, TX on 1/25/2021 and they did a recall of a 2nd ecm update of software. Emptied SUV out on 2/2, went to backup on 2/3 and white smoke pour out of exhaust. Tried to drive to mitchell Hyundai enterprise, al, vehicle died, had to have it towed to shop. Just found out today that my vehicle was part of the recall and that I should have been sent documentation about the engine issue. To date we have not received anything about it. According to what I read in the letter, my vehicle is not covered under the recall. The dealership says it is covered, but they have to wait for the company to make up it's mind. The recall may need to be expanded, my vehicle is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2. 0t ultimate.

11/21/2020 around 12 pm we were pulling out on to the highway in heavy Saturday traffic in between roswell and norcross. As we were accelerating to get onto the road the engine seized and we couldn't get the car to respond. The pedal was being pushed to the floor and the car wouldn't respond. There were no dashboard warning lights or any loud engine noises to say there was an issue. No smoke or steam. We were able to direct the car onto a side street but the car stopped in the middle of the side street. The car electronics started going crazy, the navigation screen and interior lights kept turning themselves on and off like it was a computer rebooting. We smelled something burning so I turned the car off and we got out of the car. . I let the car rest for a few minutes and tried to turn it back on so we could get it in to a safer position and get help but the car wouldn't restart. We even tried using the battery jumper box to try to get it restarted but it wouldn't respond. Had the car towed to the dealership. This car has a theta gdi engine that is currently part of a recall but when I look up my VIN the recall doesn't show up.

Originally I drove this vehicle which is mostly driven by my wife on the week of 27oct20. I noticed a few times something smelt like it was burning, I couldn't decipher if it was a burnt oil or electrical smell. While driving down the road with my kids in the vehicle the engine just shut off, I was able to throw it into neutral and press the start button and it started right back up as I was rolling down the street. It did this two more times before I got to my destination. I brought it to the dealership that Friday, 30oct20 for an oil change and for them to look into it. It was at the end of the day so they had no upper technicians to check it out but they did perform an oil and cabin air filter change and asked that I bring it back. 3 weeks later on 19nov20 I was driving my kids again when the engine started to knock and shut off again. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer on 28nov20 after looking into this issue and reading a bunch of articles about Hyundai & kia being fined for not responding to a recall which stated debris from manufacturing could restrict oil flow to connecting rod bearings, which is exactly what the knocking in my engine sounds like, potentially causing the four-cylinder engines to stall or catch fire. I have had all of this minus the fire thank god! but, now the it makes sense about the burning smell I was smelling. I believe all these issues are tied into campaign#/recall 162. For this recall a sensor should've been installed in my vehicle back in 2017 according to service records that should've indicated this issue and alerted me. Even to the day it was towed to the dealership the engine would run, knock but not one service light would light up on my dashboard. I'm still waiting for a Hyundai representative to come and inspect my vehicle as it has not moved since it was dropped off with the dealer.

The car is a 2014 Santa Fe and out of the blue I started to hear a strange noise from my engine area. Multiple dealerships confirmed that it was the engine that needed to be replaced. One dealership assured me that it would be covered due to a recent recall on Santa Fe engines but come to find out the recall was for a different engine type and not mine. While researching online I have seen several complaints of engine failure for the same type of engine that my Santa Fe has. The car isn't safe to drive at all and when I contacted Hyundai about offering some sort of assistance and to cover the costs of the engine, they refused to do so. There should be a recall and the 3. 3 engines as well. I have had several cars before and never have I ever had an engine fail me.
Vehicle began making a noise out of nowhere, no light indications, nothing. Suddenly the engine died on the interstate, again, no light indications until the vehicle actually stopped running. Vehicle was towed to local shop, found out it had absolutely no oil in it, but there was no oil leak. Engine had broken and told we needed a new engine. Hyundai then told us that they no longer make the 2014 engine, so a replacement would cost $11,000 and have 96,000 miles on it. Our Santa Fe had 73,000 miles on it when this occurred. Sudden engine failure with no indication of an issue, while traveling at a high rate of speed on the interstate could have produce a horrible, if not fatal accident.

Air and defrosters quit turn engine off restart and it worked. 5 times . The engine is a 2013 2. 0 turbo Santa Fe using oil 2 quarts a week, engine is making a noise. Also, dealer said they could not do anything until it gets bad? you must check the oil all the time. .
I get regular oil changes on my car and have receipts of my last 2 oil changes, but there was no oil in my car and the bearings were dry and rubbing which cause metal shavings to go into my engine. Vehicle was making a noise when I pulled into a Hyundai dealership and they diagnosed it.
There has been some engine noise for 2 months or so. . I then had an oil leak and the dealer said that the engine noise was from crankshaft and maybe a bearing inside. I have 74, 000 miles on vehicle and have a 10 year 125000 mile extended warranty. I was at the dealer today and they gave me the news about maybe crankshaft bearing. The Hyundai motor company has a recall on your site about 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe having defect in a pin in the crankshaft that wears the bearing. This seems like exactly what dealer is telling me. My question is , the recall says that Hyundai motor company recalled 420 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe's that were produced between January 26 2017 and February 13 2017. My Santa Fe was actually produced on January 14 2017, which is only 12 days prior to the start of the official recall production date of January 26. How does Hyundai motor company know that my vehicle was not produced with this faulty pin in the crankshaft that causes bearing failure? thank you very much for this website and I hope someone can enlighten me as to what I may be able to do right now.
My transmission went out at 114,000 miles they found metal shavings in it, we had it replaced. Now at 134,000 miles the engine went out, they found metal shavings in that also. It has been sitting at Hyundai since December 2019 it is now February 2020 and still without a car or a rental. Service department built and new engine after they tested the engine it started making noises again and apparently Hyundai sent them some part that didn't fit now they have to fix it again. . . Hyundai corporate has only offered to pay half of the repairs even though it was an engine malfunction. Both of these issues happen while driving. The engine shut down while on the freeway when it broke.
On September 20th 2018 after having the car a week, the car made a noise would not start all the dashboard lights were blinking on and off then never came on again. The car was taken to the dealer for them to say it was a battery, which they never gave a service receipt for no matter how many times I asked. Then again on August 7 2019 my engine light came on and car stop while driving on the expressway with my kids in the car. Thankfully we were able to get off the expressway which was a very scary situation. After about 30 min that did restart but would not accelerate of 60 mph. As we coasted the remainder of our trip. Then again on October 7 the light came on again after receiving an oil change and tune up. This time smoking and stalling and never coming back on again. The brake would be pressed when the push to start betton never went to the on position.
I was driving on the highway when the engine began to make a noise. It is an engine failure and has to be replaced.
While accelerating the engine started to make noise. The noise almost sounded like metal stuck spinning around in a metal fan. It stopped when I let off the gas and was fine for another mile. It then started sounding again but did not stop when I let off the gas. I barely made it into a parking lot then had to call to have it towed. You can hear the noise when the car is turned on and especially when it is accelerating. The vehicle moves very slowly and the noise becomes very loud when accelerating. I have a video of the sound but cannot attach to this. It kind of sounds like the marble in a spray paint can when shaking it. I was driving up a hill on a rural 1 lane hyway.
Driving on the interstate the engine started making a noise and the check engine light illuminated. At that point driving it straight home the engine stalled several times, once while making a turn through a busy intersection, I was left with no power. Tl the contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving 65 mph, the contact heard a knocking and pinging noise. The contact pulled over, turned off the vehicle, restarted it, and the noises continued while driving 65 mph. The vehicle lost power and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to rockland Hyundai (55 NY-303, west nyack, NY 10994, (845) 402-8623) where metal shavings were found in the oil pan. The dealer stated that there was no recall, but were reviewing all maintenance records to see if they would repair the vehicle via the current warranty. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact back to the dealer. The failure mileage was 78,000.
My car started making a weird humming screeching noise and then the next day it would not start. Found out the bearings have failed and caused complete engine failure. Its the same problem with your 2011-2013 models so the 2014 should be included in that recall. We have spent tons of money keeping the car updated on maintenance for college and this is completely inappropriate for a 2014 to have this happen. The vehicle was in motion when the first noise was noticed then parked immediately thank goodness at her dorm where the car, then would not start the next day and was towed.

There was no oil spill or leaks on the exterior of the engine. No warning lights came on inside dashboard. How does it go from running fine, to just going up hill and having loss of power, making noise and when towed to the garage engine is blown. 5 years old car with 105000 miles is unacceptable. I hope Hyundai do the correct thing and fix it . The is more than 233 complains about the same problem and I dont see then taking action.
Purchased a cpo car from dealership. 32k miles. Drove approximately 150 miles when driving up a major highway at 60mph, engine starting severe knocking, in less then 1/2 mile, engine failed. Electrical worked, put on hazard lights. Brakes were unusable. Coasted to emergency lane and pushed into park. Car was towed back to dealership where it was determined that the car engine threw a rod. Entire engine needed to be replaced. This car was "certified". Car was returned to dealership where a full refund was obtained. I have video of the engine sound.

Mileage around 82,000 miles | always had routine, on time, maintenance | no engine light on (or any others) | on a trip driving down the highway going around 65mph with cruise control set (2 adults and 1 child in the car, not towing anything), our SUV started making a strange noise when accelerating, then progressed to a consistent noise whether accelerating or not. We decided we needed to stop in the next town (about 20 miles away) to take a look, but before we could reach the next town the car without warning shut down, started smoking, and pieces of the car fell from below the car. My husband raised the hood and noticed the engine was on fire, and quickly put it out. We had the car towed to a Hyundai dealership and just by raising the hood the mechanic knew the engine exploded, and informed us it would be around $6500 for a used engine. From the time the noise first started until the engine blew up we drove 12 miles. We have tried contacting Hyundai to notify them of the issue, after waiting on hold for 30+minutes all they can say is there is nothing they can do since we are out of warranty, when we ask to speak to a manager one is never there and they promise that will have the manager call us back, but we have not received a phone call. After researching this issue, it seems we are not the only ones having issues with the engine. My husband used to sell Hyundai's and knows for a fact that the Santa Fe and sonata's have the same engine - the 2011-12 sonata engine had a recall, why didn't the Santa Fe have a recall? the Santa Fe is my second Hyundai to own, I will not buy another due to the issues with my Santa Fe and lack of customer service. Side note, why would I spend $6500 on another engine, when there seems to be an exploding pattern.
While on a family road trip, my Santa Fe started clattering and making noise. It had been running fine and no indicator lights were on. The car just quit in the middle and we had to coast to safety on the side of the road where we waited for hours for Hyundai roadside assistance to tow us to the local dealership. The engine is blown due to a recall. It has now been longer than 60 days and Hyundai does not have an engine to replace it. I have learned that there is now a second recall involving a faulty hood latch which is also a safety hazard.
As I was driving the vehicle started making a strange noise and then I saw smoke come out of the back of the car, I was able to get over 2 lanes in the hwy to get to the shoulder. Dealer said the engine blew up. Engine only had 62k miles on it. And maintenance was done at dealership.
4/1/2016: driving on interstate I-40 westbound in las cruces in a construction zone, the car engine died, but I was able to get to shoulder. Car towed to auto repair shop, but problem could not be diagnosed; car eventually restarted. 2nd attempt to diagnose on 4/11/16; none could be found. Car started to make occasional loud engine noise over ensuing months. I contacted Hyundai, and in October 2016 was told to bring car 100 miles back to las cruces, nm (borman autoplex) for further diagnosis. Borman diagnosed metal shavings in engine (similar or identical to problem for the 470,000 sonatas with metal shavings in the engine). A full engine failure and engine replacement was recommended. I contended that the engine should be replaced free of charge, as it was a manufacturing defect and the vehicle dying without notice while being driven could prove dangerous or fatal to the driver/passengers. The engine failed fully, and the vehicle is not drivable. Again, issue began 4/1/2016; engine failed completely 12/28/2016.
Took my car in to Hyundai dealership in concord, CA on approx. March 17th of this year for previous complaints of engine suddenly shutting off while driving. Was told at that time that no error codes were recorded by the car's computer and that Hyundai mechanics could not find any mechanical issues with the vehicle. They then talked to Hyundai engineers and decided that possibly the cars throttle bodies could be a problem and told me they would do a "good will" replacement of this auto part. Since that time, I have driven the car approximately 1k miles without incident, until this past Saturday may 18 2013. I was in stop and go traffic, going at speeds between 5-15 mph. I pushed the brake to do a gradual slow, then went to push the accelerator but there was no power. I looked down to see my dash lights were present, but no engine sound. I slowed the car to a complete stop, turned the ignition off, then turned it on and the engine started right up. Again, as previous, no error messages appeared on my dash. The car has been driven without incident so far 200 miles since this last incident. The dealership has asked me to bring the car in and allow them test drive the car for a day hoping that this intermittent problem will occur for them. It appears to be connected to hitting the brakes, slowing, then attempting to accelerate. All times this so far this has occurred while driving on an incline. The vehicle currently has 35, 500 miles.

Was negotiating a left sided curve on the downhill side of a steep, windy road in a remote area between oakland and moraga, CA when I suddenly lost steering power. I went to hit the brakes and found that my brakes also had no power. I pushed very hard on the brakes and managed to get the vehicle to stop. Had I been unable to stop, my car would've gone directly over a very steep hillside that borders a reservoir. As it was, the rear end of my car was jutted out halfway onto the roadway and only a few yards from a blind curve. This particular spot also has no cell phone coverage. After putting the car in park, I noted that my ignition was still in the "on" position and that all the appropriate dash lights were on, but the engine sound was absent and the tach read zero. I did not notice any error messages on my dash. I turned the car off, then turned the ignition back on. The car started right up with no hesitation. I heard no unusual engine noises or experienced any difficulties with driving the vehicle. I drove to the closest service station approx. 3-4 miles from the incident location. The mechanic did a quick check under the hood, found nothing unusual and suggested I go directly to the Hyundai dealership. I took my car to future Hyundai in concord, CA. They ran diagnostics the next day, then reported that they "could find nothing wrong with the car. " I expressed my fear of driving the vehicle based on very rational safety concerns and what I felt had been a close call on my life the day prior. I also told the service person that a quick look online lead me to find several stories similar to mine. I was told I would need to talk with the service manager the next day as he was not available. I then called Hyundai customer service and reported the entire history of this issue. I have been assigned case # 5622448.
On November 5, 2004 at approx 7:30 pm our 2003 Santa Fe with only approx 14,000 miles suddenly "died" in the middle of the road. All of the vehicle warning lights came on, the heater and radio began making strange noises, the headlamps failed, and the vehicle engine stopped running and would not start, leaving the vehicle in the middle of the road, stranding me and my pregnant wife, with no lights or flashers in the middle of the road on a cold night. Hyunadai roadside service contractor cross country motorclub claimed that it would take over 3 hours to get the vehicle towed, so finally 9 after nearly 2 hours) county police towed the vehicle as a traffic hazard to fairfax Hyundai.
