Engine light came on, engine started to make a rattling sound. The sound got worse when accelerating especially if I was attempting to go up a hill. I tried to make it to a mechanic, but the engine died on the way while attempting to make it up a big hill and would not restart. I had it towed to a shop, they said there was no oil in the car despite the fact that we always had our oil changed regularly. There was no sign of a leak. They had to put three quarts in it just for anything to show on the dipstick. The shop that I took it to did not do engine repair and recommended that I had it taken some place to have the engine rebuilt. Their theory was is that something blew and that the oil was being burned up. It happened so fast. One day I had a dependable care that I loved. The next it needed it's engine replaced. However, I knew I could not afford to pay for an engine to be rebuilt or replaced. So, I had to just have my car towed home.

Our vehicle has never had any issues, no check engine light, nothing. We were driving on the highway at approximately 60mph when there began to have a knocking, rattling noise from the engine. We pulled over to check it, no check engine light or anything still. Drove the vehicle to our repair shop, and on the way there, our engine blew. Still no check engine light came on. Our vehicle only had 133,000 miles on it, so of course it's out of warranty. Such a huge burden. We are now stuck having to replace the engine, while owing a crap ton of money on this SUV.
1) radio stopped working about 1 year ago. 2) about 6 months ago, the door and truck open light on the dash appeared and never went off. 3) on 1/14/21, the car started making a rattling sound, and stopped accelarating; auto shop determined the engine was ruined and needs to be replaced. With the 1st 2 issues, I was still able to use the vehicle. However, now that the engine is ruined, I am no longer able to use the vehicle.

I had this issue since I got the car, only the issue has occured progressed more as months went by. Now at 21,000 miles, engine makes a rattle sound for 2-3 seconds during cold startup and then goes away. Only happens when engine is in a complete cold-state (early morning) or not driven for a few hours.

I was driving on the interstate at speed when my 2012 Santa Fe began making a loud rattling sound and losing power. I was able to safely move to the shoulder and stop. The engine then stopped. I was towed to a local garage where a technician inspected the engine. It was found that one cylinder failed and filled up with oil causing a total engine failure. The engine has to be replaced. My vehicle has 101,000 miles on it. Very expensive $6000. 00 engine replacement. Car has run wonderful up till this point.

While traveling home from vacation on i75s we heard a strange rattling sound and immediately lost all power. Had to coast to the left which put us in a very dangerous situation. Highway patrol had to stop traffic and we were able to get car to the right side. Barely. Was towed to the nearest chevy dealership because no one else was open. Was told I needed a new engine. I've owned this car for 2 years with no warning of any problems. There are no recalls. I'm having the car towed to my home in ms. Car has 90,000 miles. There are no recalls but there should be! this problem could have caused a serious accident !.
The vehicle was stationary in a private parking lot at a doctor's office. I tried many times to start the vehicle. The engine sounded like it would kick over but did not. I then heard a kind of whirring sound when attempting to start the engine and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I exited the vehicle and opened the hood. A significant amount of smoke was coming from the lower part of the engine. The smell was kind of electrical in nature. I was concerned that the engine would catch fire so I went into the doctor's office, asked for a bottle of water, then doused the left side of the engine. I left my car in the parking lot and was picked up by my family. I am quite afraid to even attempt to start the car again. I will have to call a tow truck to take the car to a mechanic. There is no reason for the engine to have smoked like that.
My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe began to drive rough on the freeway, slight tugging, rattling sound under the hood and would not accelerate above 60mph, check engine and oil light came on. I exited the freeway and it stalled at red light. Started it up and then stalled 3 more times at every red light on the way home. I added oil and made service appt. Brought in for service died once on the way and again at the service center but did not start back up. Mechanic said engine failed due to crank shaft spun bearing. Sensors did not appear in advance sensors appeared too late causing damage to engine. My car is only 7 years bought brand new out of show room no previous major issues. Multiple complaints on line showing same problem with others. Unacceptable and dangerous.

My 2014 Santa Fe sport starting making a crazy rattle noise from the engine in 2016. Just 2 years after I had purchased it new. After a few trips to the dealer they kept telling me they don't hear anything. It makes the noise after the car is completely warmed up and sitting still. When I am driving I can not hear it again until I slow down. Every stop light, stop sign or in parked it makes a noise. Once I heard about the recall I have went to the shop a few more times only to be told it is fine and normal noises or they don't hear anything. Finally I got them to "replace" the engine after working up a complaint with Hyundai corporate. The day after I picked my car up the noise is still there. The only answer I have got it that's just the way it is. It is normal. If, in fact I got a new engine like the recall says shouldn't it not make a sound? I am not sure what they "fixed" but, to me it wasn't the whole engine as they are claiming it is. I am scared now to even drive this vehicle after reading they catch on fire and just stop while driving.
Vehicle started to shake and a loud rattling noise coming from under the hood just before it died right in traffic, 2013 Hyundai sport 2. 0 turbo towed to the dealer whereas the service rep knew immediately what the issue was, hopefully a recall will be issued and problem fixed by Hyundai as there were only 55k miles on the vehicle.
Engine noise at cold start. When starting the vehicle after the car has sat for over an hour, a loud rattle noise is heard for 3-5 seconds. The noise is coming from oil starvation. I have been quoted that is a timing chain and guide issue. Several people online are experiencing the same problem.
While accelerating to merge with traffic the engine began making a rattling sound. As I let off the accelerator pedal to join the traffic flow the engine noise stopped. It came back a few more times before we made it home. The next day while descending a hill the engine quit. Since it was down hill my wife was able to coast onto a exit ramp and pull onto the shoulder. I was able to get the engine restarted and drove to the dealer. They determined there was metal debris in the oil and the engine needed replacement.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving various speeds, the contact heard a whining noise. Also, when the contact shifted from first to second or from third to fourth gear, the transmission shook violently and the engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the purge valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. After the repair, the failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 41,432.

See attached email updated 06/04/2013 the occupant classification system (osc) does not consistently recognize small-statured adults, causing the passenger side air bag to deactivate when such person occupy the front seat. Also, there were problems with the transmission, a knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle, the vehicle shutting down, an issue with the throttle cable, and a whining sound upon acceleration.
Engine- defective short block engine
car is back in shop now for the 5th time for the same problem. Check engine light on, loud rattling noises coming from engine. Dealer informed me it's a defective factory engine. Brand new short block engine replaced twice and car now back in shop for same problem. No longer feel safe in this vehicle, as twice I had to be towed to dealer b/c of engine failure and I had my 2 yr old son with me. In reviewing this website, I see countless numerous and similar complaints! the engine is the heart of a car so how many new hearts is Hyundai willing to put in this one car? it cost more to fix this problem than to just accept the loss and properly compensate me! repairs are as follows: new short block engine installed; return car same day b/c engine felt "loose"; told it was the sway bar links- installed same day; car still felt loose, next day check engine light on- car returned. This time told it was strut top needed to be replaced- done. Picked up car, 2 days later back in shop for same initial loud engine noise and check engine light on again. Told same problem with short block engine to be defective. Ordered brand new short block engine and replaced again! picked up car after repair and again, same day, brought the car back b/c check engine light on again! car presently still in shop and I'm forced to contact an attorney b/c the Hyundai's consumer affairs states as long as the dealer keeps fixing the problem, they are not interested in offering me any compensation. How much more money are they willing to give this dealer before they realize this car is not worth another $6,500 repair bill?.
