Hyundai Santa Fe owners have reported 18 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Santa Fe based on all problems reported for the Santa Fe.
Engine has around 89k miles. Began with a knocking noise and after taking it to the dealership we were advised it "needed a new engine. " dealer was not specific as to what exactly the issue was, but I believe the same issue that affected the Hyundai sonata and Santa Fe sport is also affecting this vehicle. Because we are the second owners, Hyundai has refused to provide us any assistance. After picking it up from the Hyundai dealership, we attempted to drive to another company's dealership to initiate a trade in. While driving on the interstate, the vehicle degraded in power and died on the busy roadway just off the interstate off ramp. My wife had to push the Santa Fe using my car to get it off the roadway to a gas station parking lot. The engine does now turn on, but anytime it is put in gear it dies. Engine is completely useless. We always perform routine regular maintenance on our cars and this vehicle has not been abused in any way. Was purchased in 2016 with roughly 45k miles on it.

I had my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe serviced by Hyundai for a tire change and oil change along with the recall update on Jan 17, prior to going from st louis mo to wichita KS. I am a traveling nurse, my contract was starting Monday the 20th. I was advised the recall was a system update for improperly working sensors. My motor blew 2 hours into my trip on Jan 18th while driving on the highway. I heard a loud popping noise and felt it as well. My vehicle immediately started to smoke. I pulled over to the side of the road, oil was pouring out the vehicle. It was 30 degrees and im stuck on a 2 lane highway. I was towed to the closest dealer, where I was informed they would not be able to get a rental vehicle since the rental location was closed for the day. I could not get a loaner vehicle due to the amount of miles I had to drive. My only option would be to purchase a new vehicle. I was stressed and very overwhelmed, thinking about my need to get to wichita KS and upset that my vehicle that was just serviced by hyndai had blown up on the highway. Within an hour of leaving the dealership, finally having a moment alone, without a salesman in my face, I realized this was a mistake. I called back to return the vehicle but my salesman was gone for the day and the dealership was closing. I text my salesman on Sunday advising that I want to return the new vehicle and just get the rental car and my vehicle fixed, as Hyundai roadside had promised. On Monday Jan 20th I was advised they would not reverse this sale and I could not get my vehicle back. Now I'm stuck in a vehicle I do not trust with a higher payment, higher insurance premium, feeling completely taken advantage of. I do not trust the Hyundai brand. Several injuries have occurred to others due to their lack of honesty. There are many posts online about Hyundai's poor business practices. The recall is called a campaign.

Something in the engine , harness or module , allows the computer to overheat suddenly , through 3 batters and 2 alternators in 4 months last alternator lasted 2 drives. . . Car dies nancy depressive light show and died then the battery and alternator is fried. Hyundia dealership refusing to check harness or module because my VIN number isn't listed in recall although my car is in the recall. The car has died 4 times requiring towing. The car died when driving after about 10 miles . Car has brand new battery. Starter works fine. It died in the middle if a streetceach time twice was at night. And I am a disabled woman who uses a wheelchair. Monday June 24th was the most recent time at 1 pm in 104 degree heat for 5 hours with a heart condition which was doubly dangerous situation. The battery died eventually leaving me with no hazards. What to charge me to replace a 3 rd alternator without checking harness or module a scam!.

On 2/8/2019 an update for the knock sensor was done on my vehicle. On 2/18/19 I was driving up a steep hill on a highway when my vehicle lost power upon acceleration. I was unable to go faster than 17 mph uphill and 50 mph on level highway (speed limit is 70 mph). It was 16 degrees f and I had an infant in the car. I was told by the dealership it is likely due to the update done on the knock sensor and to drive it to their dealership. I did not feel it was safe to drive any further than necessary so I had it towed (I had to pull over constantly because the speed limit is 70 mph). The dealer ran a diagnostic and it came back it needs a new engine. The current engine only has approx. 14,500 miles on the odometer. The dealer requested a new engine from Hyundai but it has not been approved yet and they believe it is a result of the knock sensor update. They estimate I will not have my vehicle repaired for at least 3 months. The dealer said they are having several other vehicles of this same make, model and year come in for the same problem. It was very hazardous having a vehicle unable to accelerate in winter with an infant in the car. I was in a remote area and this could have had the potential for a much worse outcome than it did.

I was driving on a two line highway in the country and as I went to accelerate the car engine quit. I could not restart the car. As I was pulling off to the side I saw smoke coming out of the engine or hood. I got my daughter and myself out of the car safely and once we stepped away from the car I saw an orange glow in the engine and then that glow burst into flames. I was in motion and I was driving straight without turning. I believe I was going approximately 45 miles an hour and accelerated when the car engine died. We did smell gas as I was pulling off to the side of the country road. I did not have a collision, an accident or hit anything in the road. Again, I started to accelerate and the engine died. I had control to get the car over to the side of the country road. I was surrounded primarily by farm fields and no sidewalks. I was on route 47 and I was on the straight part of the highway without any bends. I called nine-one-one immediately and they dispatched the fire department and the police department. . The fire was extinguished and the car towed to my preferred auto shop. This happened on Friday, January 11th, 2019 at approximately 5:15 p. M. The temperature outside was approximately 16 degrees. I have called my insurance company and they are sending out someone to look at it.

Driving down the highway at 70 mph the car stalled and then turned off completely. No power brakes, no power steering. Luckily I was driving and was able to coast of the road and down a ramp. Car failed to re-start or turn over. We were stuck on the side of the road for 3 hours in 100 degree heat waiting for help. I will never buy another Hyundai. Nhtsa please do something about these faulty motors. . . Someone will get killed if they have not already been. Hyundai looked at the car and said they will replace the motor under warranty.
While driving up hill yesterday my car just died. The engine light went on and the car stopped. I am now learning that Hyundai engines have a default. They do not let enough oil in the engine regardless of oil levels and thus as you drive, the engine is disintegrating. The engines usually die a little after 100000 miles. My car has approximately 116000 miles. This is dangerous. Lucky this happened on a small back road so no one got hurt, but what if this happens on a major hwy? accidents/death even. We own another 2012 sante fe and I am scared to drive it now.

My 2017 Santa Fe sport ultimate 2. 0 turbo hesitates badly when coming out of turns or slowing. . . Just short of coming to a stop. . . And then attempting to accelerate. It is very pronounced when in eco mode, but is an issue to a lesser degree in the other two driving modes. I think it borders on dangerous. It happens all the time, pretty much in this scenario. The date I list below is just the earliest date.
While at a stop in a construction zone, my foot was on the brake, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated into the vehicle in front of me. Although my foot was planted hard on the brake, the engine continued racing, and it felt like my car was going to push his car down the street! I shifted into park and turned the car off. Luckily there was only $4,000 worth of damage to my car, and no one was hurt. I refused to drive it, and had it towed to the dealer. They said the computer showed no malfunction, and it had to be driver error. Three months later, it did it again to a lesser degree, in an open area. I turned the car off again, and it was fine until yesterday. It has been 4 months since that last incident, but this one even was worse than the first. Only thing is, now I know to put all my weight on the brake, shift to neutral and turn the car off as fast as I can. This one frightened me so badly, I will not drive it again. It is going to sit at the dealer until they find out what to do. I cannot in good conscience drive it, sell it or even trade it in until I know it is safe! every time it happened, the car was on a city street, stationary, and heading straight. The engine revs up so loud, it sounds like an airplane! yesterday I could tell the people in the car stopped next to me heard it and looked at me! I have owned this Santa Fe since it was brand new, and people tell me it looks like a new car. I keep up with the recommended maintenance and always take it to the dealer for service. Until last July, it has been an excellent car. The accident I had with it was the only accident I have had in 50 years of driving! please give me some ideas on what to tell the dealer to replace, repair or disconnect. Thanks for your help!.

6/10/13 while driving 45 mph with outside temp around 90 degrees my air conditioning stopped working. Tried turning off and on but would not work. Pulled to the side of the road turned the car off and restarted and the air conditioning worked again. I thought it was just a fluke. 6/28/13 while driving 65 mph on the interstate the car lurched and the rpms went up and down. I pulled to the side of the road but no lights were on and everything looked normal. I pulled back on the road and took the next exit. At about 35 mph the car started hesitating and then died. I coasted to the side of the road and it restarted on the first attempt. I was close to my destination so I drove there and called Hyundai assurance. They towed the car to the closest dealer and they have had the car for 3 business days and have not been able to duplicate the problem and the computer shows no errors. They said they would probably have to have a field engineer to come look at it. I don't know yet how long that will take. I loved the car until this happened. Now I don't think I will feel safe if they can't find the problem and fix it. Am I just supposed to keep driving it and hope this doesn't happen again and hope that no one is hurt next time.
This incident occurred at night time. About 10 min from a cold start, I turned onto the 210 fwy. There was a 270 degree downhill turn (a steep curve) so I had the brakes on while doing 15 mph. Half way into the turn, I suddenly lost brake and steering wheel froze. With some effort, I managed to turn the steering and stop the car. The engine died without warning. Later I sent the car to dealership but they could not reproduce the event.

Vehicle was being driven in the rain from savannah GA to jacksonville FL, outside temperature apx 80 degrees, with air conditioning on. Air conditioning abruptly ceased blowing cold air and started blowing hot, humid air, which fogged all windows from the inside. Suddenly lowered visibility causes driving hazard. This has occurred several times before with this vehicle when (1) it is hot outside, (2) the air conditioning is on, (3) it is raining, (4) the car has been driving for apx 30 to 45 minutes. Remedy is to pull off the road, turn off the engine, wait 5-10 minutes, then restart car. Air works normally for another 30-45 minutes then same problem re-occurs, but pulling to the side of an interstate also causes a safety problem. . Read more...

Driving slowly in traffic down a hill my steering wheel, gear shift and brakes locked up. Immediately my generator light came on my dashboard. I managed to pull over and somehow get the car in park. I turned the car off and realized through my manual my generator light was on. I opened the hood and couldn't see anything. When turning the car back on the light went off and everything was fine. That Monday I took the car to my dealership where I bought it and they told me they checked everything. Put the car up to a computer, drove it around, test everything couldn't find anything. I haven't had a problem since but something had to occur for this to happen. I am please with my car otherwise. Just hope this never happens again. It couldn't be weather related because it was neither super warm or super cold it was approximately 50 degrees fahrenheit. Fortunately I was stuck in traffic otherwise if I was driving the speed limit this could have ended up very badly possibly even fatal.
So many things going wrong back seat belts don't work, washer pump don't work tried to order part from dealer do not have any in us the camshaft sensor pigtail disintegrated from being to close to the engine and no one sells the part have to buy the complete engine wiring kit for one little plastic piece there should be a recall on this I read online that everyone with this car had the same problems.

On may 26th 2011 around 6:20 pm when I drove on a local down hill road which is about 400 yard long, at a speed about 20 mph, my car lost brake and power steering. I supposed to stop at a stop sign and make a left turn. When I pressed my brake pedal, my car can't stop and the pedal was very heavy, and I can't turn the steering wheel either. My car kept going straight. I kept stepping on the brake pedal very hard and my car finally stopped in the middle of street gradually. When I looked, I noticed check engine light and oil light were on. I then turn off my car and rest a while. I then turned my car back on and found check engine light and oil light went off and everything seemed back to normal. Worth to note that it was hot that day about 90 degree and I ride on brake slightly for about 300 yard on that down hill road before this incident happened. I was able to drive slowly back home that day and brought my car to the closest Hyundai dealer at 7:30 am the next morning. However the dealer was not able to reproduce the failure and found nothing. I then contacted Hyundai and Hyundai created a case number and suggested me go to the selling dealer. On June 7th, I brought my car to the selling dealer and they could not reproduce the failure either and asked me to come back to them when it happens again. However, it could be dangerous when my car loses brake again when I am driving. I am wondering if there is any other way to investigate root causes or stress my car to reproduce this issue.
Crankshaft sensor failed on my 2001 4 cylinder Hyundai Santa Fe. The car suddenly stalled and would not restart. I was driving on busy street in the winter evening and, at the time, was on crutches and unable to navigate on foot. I waited in 20 degree weather for about 45 minutes until a police person rescued me.

Vehicle hestitates on acceleration, and cuts off. Harness, throttle body, throttle body sensor, compressor, egr gasket, plugs, valves, etc. , all replaced. Problem still exists. Manufacturer and dealership can't fix problem. They have had no other complaints of this problem, per steve hickman (man. Rep) and dealership. After replacing harness, steve hickman assured me that the vehicle would be fixed, the vehicle still cuts off and the rpm bounces up and down while the truck is bucking and then it will cut off!! serious safety hazard!! (dot number: hma010900 tiresize: p225/70-16).
