1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel locked, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer reset the steering sensor however, the steering wheel felt loose. Additionally, the steering wheel inadvertently moved to the right and was stiff while making left turns. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and diagnosed with rack and pinion failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but denied the claim since the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/19/2021

Steering wheel would locks up for a second or 2 while making a right turn around 15mph then I would have to let my foot of the gas just to get the steering wheel back to normal. Had this happen too many times already. Tried fixing the problem by having a mechanic shop change the axles and buying a new rack n pinion and tires and getting a aliment done in March of this year. Steering is still gets stiff while making turns even with all the new parts on the car now.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/15/2018

Makes a popping sound when turning the steering wheel. Started 3 weeks ago, at 1st, it was a quarter in either direction, while stationary, & has progressively got worse to now 1/16 turn & even sometimes in motion. My vehicle has almost 119,000 miles it now. & I found a steering coupling recall for this for my vehicle, but I never received one, & the recall I found was for 100,000 miles. From what I read this is a $5. 00 part & they are charging $300. 00 - $700. 00 to fix? to my knowledge I've only received 4/5 recall notices #123, #132 ,#136, #160 & #169. I found a Sonata steering coupling extended warranty for 10 yrs or 100,00 miles txx7 issued on Feb 27,2017 that I never received, & since mine now has almost 119,000 miles, it should still be covered. They say this defect is not a safety issue, but it's progressively getting worse, but when the ty-rod or rack & pinion breaks & causes a crash. . To me that is a safety issue.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/23/2016

I can be driving in a straight line and as you need to correct driving line of car the steering wheel sticks as if you actually feel it try to hold you from correcting. It is only for a split second but this is constantly going on as you drive down the highway at speeds over 60mph. It seems you have to constantly correct line of car much more than usual as is wants to drift left or right. With the constant correction and sticking (or hanging feeling) in the steering wheel it is very aggravating and very stressful on a trip. I am afraid this sticking of the wheel may all of a sudden not release and a wreck is likely. It only happens at speeds above 60 mph. This does not happen at all with around town driving or on short trips below 60 mph. One Hyundai dealer service rep said this is normal for electric power steering. I have been driving 49 years and this is the first car I have drove with this problem. I have talked to owners of other car manufacturers with electric steering not having steering complaints. I purchased this car used in late 2014 and have put less than 10,000 miles on it. It now has 28,000 miles. Put new tires on it about 5,000 miles ago. I constantly check air pressure and the front end is in line. This steering problem is a safety concern Hyundai should be forced to correct before people have serious wrecks. I believe this is an engineering design flaw of either the computer control, the electrics controlling the rack and pinion steering, or the rack and pinion steering itself. I am amazed that proper quality control testing didn't catch this problem before it went into production. It is apparent this is a broad problem because of the hundreds of complaints posted about these same steering problems on many web sites.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

My 2013 Sonata has 12000 miles on it, the best pirelli tires and four wheel alignment twice. I thought new tires would make the car drive better but it did not help the steering. My Sonata will not drive in a straight line without constant correction on all highway types. This is total driving fatigue and I will only drive short distances until Hyundai has a recall on these cars in fixing the electric steering so the electric steering is not so over active. Maybe fulltime power steering would remedy the constant need in trying to make this car drive right. Also the electric power steering unit should always be installed on the rack and pinion. If this steering problem is not fixed soon I will trade my car for another car that drives like a car should. When I read all the other reviews on the internet about the 2013 Sonata and the bad steering issue, we are all describing the same problem. I really enjoy this Sonata limited, it is so well equipped but hate the way it wanders back and forth.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/14/2013

Driving along at about 35 miles per hour when vehicle engine died. Restarted vehicle and it was almost impossible to steer. I was near home so I was able to get it home where it stayed until I could get it towed to a Hyundai dealer. The dealer replaced power steering pump, the power steering rack and pinion, gear and linkage assembly and performed a 4-wheel alignment. I was extremely blessed that I was not on the local interstate going at the maximum speed allowed. I note that there are numerous complaints about the steering on the 2010 Hyundai Sonata and other earlier and later year Sonatas. It seems there should be a recall before someone is seriously injured or killed.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

I purchased my 2013 Sonata ltd with standard engine 08/17/12. After the first 300 mi or so I noticed while driving at any speed the vehicle “drifts”, which requires constant steering correction to maintain a straight line. The faster the vehicle is traveling the more prominent the drifting, so at highway speeds this can become tiring, which could cause loss of control momentarily, with severe consequences. This vehicle is designed with electric steering that functions normally for turning but there is an inherent design error in the steering control that allows there to be physical “play” in the steering wheel. This “play” is similar to autos that have many miles on them. They would have rack to pinion wear or bad steering bushings causing a gap in the steering movement left and right from center. The Sonata's “gap” also occurs when the steering is off center during vehicle turning and has to be passed through to keep the vehicle on track. The gap on the Sonata is about 1/3”. This causes the "drift". By contrast, I also own a 2013 Hyundai elantra with conventional power steering and there is absolutely no play in the wheel, thus the vehicle goes exactly where pointed without drift. In va. Where I live, given a scenario where the vehicle was older and going through a standard annual inspection, this steering “play” would cause the vehicle to be rejected as having a safety issue, which would be required to be repaired. The NHTSA should without delay require Hyundai to recall and repair this issue by removing the steering “play”. How many owners does it take who actually complain before action will be taken? I would venture a guess that this issue affects every Sonata of this design. I noted this same problem being reported in previous years of this design after the recall with some reports describing potential accidents. That's a lot of cars!.

8 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2005 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/10/2012

The vehicle was brought to a complete stop and was towed to the a personal mechanic. The mechanic replaced the rack and pinion. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact that the occurrence was caused by lack of routine maintenance. The failure and the current mileages were 150,000. The VIN was not available.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/12/2011

I lost the ability to turn the steering wheel to the right, this has happened multiple time with other people driving. After exiting the highway the steering will "lock" and not turn to the right almost as if the power steering has failed, but I have had this checked and since it's intermittent, diagnoses is virtually impossible, the power steering pump and system was checked and everything came back fine. After a few seconds of fighting the wheel the car will suddenly snap back and all seems fine. I have read other people having the same exact problem. One technician said it sounded like a valve in the rack and pinion going out. I must state that this only happens when turning to the right and only after driving at highway speeds for more than 20 minutes. I believe this should be investigated to see if it's a flaw in the rack and pinion system itself. The estimated repair for this is replacement of the rack and pinion at a cost of over $1000.

10 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/26/2010

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving approximately 40 mph, the steering column began to make a rattling noise. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the column had been installed incorrectly; the vehicle was repaired. The failure continued. The vehicle was taken to another dealer but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was taken to a third dealer where the contact steering column was replaced. The failure continued. The vehicle was taken back to the third dealer where the rack and pinion was replaced. The failure continued. The vehicle had not been repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were unknown. Updated 02/08/lj.

11 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

Steering problem. The car would difficult to turn and then it would steer fine. This went on for a couple of days. I moved the car one morning and there was a bolt on the ground which looked as if it was from the car. Had the car towed to a repair shop. The diagnosis was the bolts on the rack and pinion were loose and one of the bolts was the one I found on the ground. The rack and pinion coming loose is a serious problem.
