Jeep Compass owners have reported 44 problems related to check engine light on (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 2016 Jeep Compass keeps stalling over the past six months (70,000m). It will not accelerate at times and just stalls sometime in the town and some times on the intersate. I have had it at the dealer twice and they replaced another known issue with the throttle body (had that replaced on my daughters 2017 Jeep Compass) but it still didn't help this Jeep. Replaced the throttle body twice and the dealers only suggestion was to sell it. (check engine light only came on once- and no other alarms but in a 6 hour drive it happened 15-20 times. Fearful to pass a car for fear it might stall again. . .

2015 Jeep Compass stalls and loses power steering with no warning. It has happened at low speeds in my neighborhood as well as on the highway. The rpms will suddenly drop and then shoot back up and the engine will die. The power steering goes out when the engine dies. No check engine light comes on. No codes given. Sometimes will start immediately others you have to wait a while to restart.

Vehicle started stall without warning when driving. No error code is recorded in car. No check engine or other lights appear on the dash. There are many blogs on the internet about this problem and when I contacted fiat (Jeep) they had no solution. It is dangerous and some type of response from Chrysler is needed with a solution. The problem is random and has been happening for three months.
2012 Jeep Compass engine shuts down while driving on city streets and county roadways. Loss of power and steering control. Engine will crank again after waiting for a few minutes. Check engine light comes on prior to shutting down.

Today while driving on the highway, my car started to jerk which then the check engine light popped up with the transmission light saying it needed to be serviced. Once that appeared in the middle of me driving on the highway my car failed to accelerate. It stalled on me in the middle of the highway where everyone is driving 65 mph and it gave me no time to move over to the side of the road. I immediately turned my emergency lights on. Once the car came to a complete stop it jerked and the power on the car went off, so it put it on emergency brakes and said to step on brake and push start. I turned the car completely off and turned it back on, so I began to drive again with caution but the check engine light was still there. I drove for a mile and the transmission light message popped up again, which then cause my vehicle to jerk and stall again in the middle of driving. It put it on emergency brake but this time I was able to move to the side of the road. I let the car cool down so I turned it completely off again. This is not the first this has happened. Its very dangerous and unacceptable. I have taken it to the dealership several times and the mechanics have no idea what it is. I need to get this fixed because its not safe for me or others driving around me. I do not feel safe in this car because random things appear and cause the car to fail while in driving. There was no message or warning about anything.

On Tuesday, 9/15/2020 I went to turn on my Jeep Compass from my driveway and it would not start. However the check engine light came on. Later that evening I tried starting my Jeep again, it started with no problem, and the check engine light was now off. On Friday, 6/18/2020 I took my vehicle to advanced auto where they checked my battery, alternator, and starter - all 3 items came back good. On my way home from advanced auto I was stopped at a traffic light on south railroad street in palmyra, PA. When the light turned green for me to go, I went to release my foot off of the brake and the vehicle just completely shut off - it was just completely dead, nothing was working. I then went to put my foot back on the brake, and I felt pressure underneath the brake that wouldn't allow me to completely press it down. After a few minutes I tried turning my key and restarting the car, and it turned back on and I was thankfully able to drive it back home. On Monday, 9/21/2020 I called a tow truck and had it towed to ladd-hanford in lebanon, PA. On 9/22/2020 kelsey shellehamer called me from ladd-hanford to inform me that the crankshaft sensor was faulty, that there had been recalls for the same model but just not my year, so she was going to call Chrysler and see if they would pay for it anyway. On 9/23/2020 I received another call from kelsey. She stated that she spoke to Chrysler, their warranty department and also mvp, all of which declined responsibility for fixing the part.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle fluctuated between 0 - 1,000 rpm. The vehicle was towed to bay Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (636 15th st, panama city, FL 32401; (850) 785-1591) and it was stated that the cam shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that VIN was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage 68,000.
Car stalls out and check engine light comes on. Was stopped at a red light and when turned green the car would not move when gas pedal was pressed.
About 2 weeks ago after I put gas in the car the check engine light came on we checked everything cannot figure out anything wrong with it then the airbag lights came on so we took the battery out put it back in and reset the lights. The check engine light came on the next time I drove it. Roughly 3 or 4 days after that it was morning it was misty the roads were wet I went about 5 blocks took a right turn went another 5 blocks took a left turn and all the sudden anti skid lights came on then the airbag light came on and then the lightning bolt light came on the car had no power. Soi pulled it over and we had it towed home I had a diagnostics test in it's c1221 I believe was the code we have not drive it since.
Stop/start not available, backup camera goes out or does not work, engine is super hot high heat, check transmission ligh, check engine light, amber stop start light, putting in reverse and car will die out or hesitate, only 14,000 miles 2 years old all these symptons came on this week. Truly frustrating 2 year old car and its rediculous how bad this is. I will never buy this Compass or Jeep again.
While merging onto the 110s from the 10e, the engine turned itself off. I was going almost 60 mph. The steering column was completely locked into place as the vehicle began to slow, preventing me from being able to steer effectively. I had my two children in the car - my 1 year old daughter and my 7 year old son. Luckily, I was not involved in an accident. I wasn't able to get onto a shoulder completely as I couldn't steer. I turned the key into the engine off position, waited a few seconds and turned the engine over. It started with no problem. However the check engine light turned on. The engine light was no longer on when I started the car several days later - I didn't drive it for obvious safety reasons. I took the vehicle to a mechanic for a diagnostic who told me that the vehicle is in need of a new crank shaft sensor and two cam shaft sensors - that all three should be replaced at the same time. I called Jeep, after a friend sent me a recall notice on 2016 Jeep Compasses with this same issue. I was informed that my car's VIN did not match the vehicles that were recalled despite experiencing the same dangerous mechanical malfunction.
I have repeated got my car sent to a repair shop for screeching transmission & brakes. Every time no one can find an issue and the next day the noises will come back again. Recently once again my check engine light turned on. I have constantly stated there is obviously something wrong with the engine or transmission since the first month of buying this car, but no one can find anything so everything is good with the car apparently. Its not safe do something & ive filled a complaint before and gotten no response. Recent incident: the car is currently was stationary when I tried turning on my car and the check engine light came on. The past incidents: I was in motion on a 40mph road and the car completely shuts off. The repair shop took a crank piece out but thats not main problem since 2weeks later my car doesnt want to turn on.

While riding this evening my engine suddenly stalled while driving on a 3 lane road. This is the 3rd time this has happened. After stopping the car started after about 10 minutes. I took it to a auto shop because the check engine light came on this time. The code said it was the camshaft sensor. When I made it home I entered my VIN on vehicle history. Com and it started recall campaign 16v907000 for my car however on the NHTSA website it says there is not. Im going to contact a Jeep dealer in the morning to see if it can be fixed.
2015 Jeep Compass latitude 4x4 with a 2. 4l engine and automatic transmission. The vehicle only has 80,000 miles on it. About a week ago we were driving down the road in our neighborhood when the car went into limp mode, no power to the wheels and the enging started chugging. Came to a complete stop and the rpm's were at 1500 at idle. Check engine light, throttle control light, abs, and traction control light turned on. I shut off the engine and waited a couple seconds and turned it back on. All the lights turned off and the vehicle seemed fine. I drove it home and hooked up my scan tool and there were no codes so I had no idea what to look for. Two days later we were driving down the highway and it happened again in a construction zone with no shoulder and no exit! the car would not accelerate and chugged to a stop, had to hold up traffic to turn the car off and back on to get moving again. Two miles later it happened and we had a shoulder to pull over onto. I stopped the car and tried to scan the engine and again no codes but the dash was lit up like a christmas tree. After turning it back on the car was stuck in limp mode and would not move. Had to have it towed to the shop. After throwing a bunch of money at it we finally found it was a faulty throttle body. The pedal sensor and the throttle body were not communicating. It cost us $719. 67 to have it fixed not to mention the tow. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.
On several occasions the care has stalled while driving. Once when taking a turn, but mostly when slowing down at a stop light. The check engine light will come on and service auto start stop will come on and without any warning the car will stop in the middle in the road. When we took car to the dealer they told us that it was the both batteries. We have had this car less than one year. I could understand one battery, but why would both go out at the same time. In researching I saw that there was voltage regulator recall; however, we are being told that this does not involve our VIN. These incidents have happened around town.
Engine stutters when accelerating. The engine has done this for a couple years but is steady getting worse. Also check engine light came in with a catalyst system efficiency below threshold tank 1.
My service transmission and check engine light comes on and off every few weeks I took it to my local Jeep dealer they told me multiple times there was nothing wrong with my 2018 Compass when I know indeed it is I smell coolant all the time they say they don't my engine and trans light comes in and off they have no code I caught it on video they both lights were on and I was asked if I'd like to bring it back in I said yes the day I go in of course the lights are off but now they have a code he says to me OH your transmission just needs to be updates but the codes that I got back stated that it was the torque converter.
Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Jeep Compass 4x4. The contact stated the check engine light was illuminated on and off for several months. The vehicle was taken to a dealer (diehl Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram fuso of moon 5408 university blvd, moon, PA 15108) for diagnosis and repairs. The diagnosis was a replacement 02-03 sensor however the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer and was rediagnosed with a Cadillac converter failure the vehicle is in the process of getting repaired. The manufacturer was notified about the failure but offered no remedy. The approximate failure was 150,000 tp.

For a while now when my car accelerates between 3 and 3. 5 rpms the throttle control sensor goes off, and when that happens traction control turns off check engine light goes on and I cant go over 20mph.
While driving, the engine loses power and throttle control, traction control, and check engine lights came on. Vehicle goes into "limp" mode and won't accelerate above 10-15 mph. This seems to be a recurring problem with this vehicle, but there isn't a recall. This is a major safety hazard.
I was about to pull out of the parking lot while in drive when the engine service light came up telling me to pull my car over and come to a stop because the vehicle will shut off. Took it to the dealer they said nothing was wrong and erased all my error messages after it was scanned. As a standard procedure of Jeep they told me to pick up the vehicle and drive it for 1,000 miles and if the check engine light appeared to bring it in and then they will fix it. I find this is unsafe telling me to go drive my vehicle and there is a possibility it may turn off while I am on the highway.
While car is in motion engine will stall at red lights / intersections, car will state:put car in drive but car is in drive, low oil pressure warning will illuminate when turning right then disappear, check engine light will flash then turn off. Car may stall, lose power, emergency brake warning, no gas pedal response. I researched this problem and it appears that the crankshaft position sensor could be faulty. . . Car is 2018 with 21,000 miles. . . Cps should not be faulty at this low mileage/age of vehicle. . . Seems to be a common complaint across Jeep Compass vehicles of multiple years. . . . . Recall Jeep vehicles for faulty crankshaft position sensor. . . . Happens at highway speeds as well, car loses power and steering ability. . . . . Dangerous.
While accelerating onto a highway, my vehicle suddenly shut off. I immediately put hazards on, tried to pull to the side, stopped and tried turning the car back on, after 2 attempts it turned back on but I was scared the entire hour long ride home so drove in the slow lane so that I could pull right off the highway if it happened again. I took the vehicle for service and they said it was the hood latch sensor. They replaced it and it worked fine for a month or so then again this happened while driving down the road about 40 mph, car suddenly shut off. Again another scary experience. Took the car back and they said the actual hood latch needed to be replaced. Pulled out of service center and it happened again, pulled back in to service center and a day later they called and said hood needed realignment. Worked again for a few months then today, again driving down the road, oil pressure low warning flashed on my dash then went off, the check engine light flashed on then yet another warning that read switch to p then desired gear. Car then lost almost all power but luckily had just enough power to get me to a side road where I barely made it onto the road before it shut off. I tried turning it back on and after 2 tries it powered on but when I put into drive and hit the gas, it would not move. It was like it would not engage in gear. This is an extreme safety hazard as this vehicle suddenly stop without warning while driving.
Update to my previous complaint: I leased this car on January 12, 2019. It is brand new. The car was having trouble starting again today and yesterday. I turned it on the normal way and it was fine in park, but when I switched to drive it shut off. The d started flashing (again) so I put it back in park, and the console told me to press the brake and press stop/start, which I did attempt but the brake was locked and this did not work. The red lightning bolt and check engine light both came on. The red lightning bolt warning light indicates a problem with the electronic throttle control. It also stalled and was hard to steer as usual now, though putting it in 4wd makes it a bit easier to control. I am now even more scared to operate this vehicle and feel like it is going to fall apart while I'm driving.

Three times this has happened while driving. Slowing to stop at a light on a highway in heavy traffic. Slowing down at a stop sign on side street no traffic. Turn with acceleration off a heavy congested area to side road. No accident to report, but could have been a major one at the busiest intersection in town. The 3rd incident the check engine light came on. Had it read and code p2172 is throttle actuator control system. All 3 times were within 8 days.
I was driving on the service road about to enter onto a major highway and my Jeep had three caution lights pop up on the dashboard. Next thing I know my rpms were all over (limp mode) and my cars power started to stall. I had to pull over and was in a really bad spot that had no shoulder. I restarted the vehicle and the check engine light was lit. I was able to drive it into a parking lot. This was quite a scary situation and had me fearing for my safety. I looked up this problem and seems like quite an occurence. I had my truck towed to the nearest Jeep service station and was told they had to put me on emergency list for loaner vehicle (mind you, I lease my Jeep) and was told they were backed up in service. That location told me it was a pcm code error. I called other service locations and was told I needed to tow it to my home station in order to get a loaner. The car sat for over a week and was finally looked at today. I am now told the throttle body needs to be replaced. My Jeep has very little wear and only has 53,000 miles. This issue is way too common to not be considered as hazardous.
Tl- the contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while his wife was approaching traffic, when depressing the break pedal when the vehicle seized. The driver stated she continue to experience the failure. The manufacturer had not been informed of failure. The failure mileage was ap 12,062. Dp.
I was driving about 45 mph on a country road, after a curve in the road, my Jeep"s traction control and check engine light came on as well as the electronic throttle control started flashing. My Jeep then went into "limp mode" and I couldn't drive faster than 40 mph. I'm so glad that I was on a country road because if this would have happened on a highway it would have been very dangerous. I was finally able to get my Jeep home and it has been fine since but now I'm constantly worried that this is going to happen again at anytime.
Check engine light comes on and car will not crank; everything else works. Let car sit and it finally starts. Dealership says no codes show up. Happened 5 times since car was purchased 12/24/19.
Check engine light came on paid $800 dollars to resolve issues, I am still having problems with check engine light. A few sensors(oil, heating etc) were replaced, O2 sensors were replaced. I was told that it could be the vehicle's computer system. This is creating a very serious headache problem. I tried with numerous car repair shops and they don't seem to pinpoint the problem. They check the codes and their response is "it appears that this is whats wrong with it, but there is no warranty, that we can resolve the issues. Issues are happening while driving the vehicle is in motion.

Dayton andrews Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram, inc. Sold me a dangerously defective vehicle and refuse to abide by lemon law. On April 21 2018 I purchased a new Jeep Compass latitude 4x2 sport utility with 15 miles on odometer. August 2 I returned the vehicle to dealership due to engine stalling, intermittent engine shut offs, warning lights, check engine lights on, electrical failure and multiple loss of panel communication faults. August 6, I was told to pick up vehicle. Upon arrival lead mechanic stated it's a lemon and that I should go lemon law. He couldn't find the source of the issue, it's a manufacturing defect but it seems to be repaired this time and he will continue trying to fix vehicle if ordered by his boss. Before I could leave the dealership parking lot vehicle stalled and electrical failure with multiple loss of communication occurred, so the vehicle never left lot and remained until October 29th until I was told it had been repaired and to pick up. On October 31st, vehicle had electrical failure and multiple loss of communication and complete blackout of control panel screen. On November 7 Chrysler formally refused to buy back the vehicle and instead added insult to injury offering $3000 to keep the defective vehicle, shut up and go away. . Read more...
Crank shaft sensor , car stalls, first started in July 2018. . . Check engine light came on and threw back code for crank shaft sensor.

The vehicle was towed to straub Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram 1502 wheeling Ave, glen dale, wv 26038 stated that the cam shaft needed to replaced. Has the car 38 days and it stalled on me in traffic: wouldn't shift gears and stated that parking brake was engaged. Had it towed. Bad tcm. Waited 3 weeks for part. Replaced. Picked up 4 weeks later and had it for two days and it happened again while in traffic. Had it towed again. Twice my life has been put in danger. I was in motion twice at 50mph when it just engaged the parking break and shut down entirely. Check engine light, brake light, track light, every light you can think of came on and the car totally shut down, would not restart, would not shift gears for tow truck, nothing. Happened twice. 6/8/2018 and 7/7/2018.
I have an 07 Jeep Compass. I have owned it for 5 years and I have a major saftey issues. Gas light came on so I filled up. Got a few yards from the pump and it stalled. No check engine light or anything came on. Was able to pull into a parking spot. Every time I turn the car on it sputters a bit then runs. After about a minute or two of idling it stalls. Tried letting it idle and revving the engine. My car stopped in everywhere in roads, highways, and thanks god I didn't get into any accident. I searched online and it turned out that many Jeep/Chrysler owners have this issue and there was a recall for Jeep Compass 2011/2012 for this issue but other models. (https://static. Nhtsa.
