65 problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vechile jumped from park to reverse when time of starting.
The transmission completely stalled within one month from date of lease. The transmission was overhauled; however, the transmission continued to shift roughly. The car was taken to the dealer 2 more times, in which the dealer made adjustments once. The transmission continued to shift roughly (I. E. There was jerky motion with a clunk between shifts). The car was returned to the dealer, in which the dealer indicated no problem. The problem with the transmission has worsen. Currently, there is long stall before shifting.
Racing when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, dealer replaced transmission, happening again + clunking sound when shifting to lower gears or stopping.
Transmission makes loud clunk sound when shifting into reverse. Very loud!.
Transmission slams into gear when putting vcl in reverse. Does not do this when putting vcl in drive or any other gear, just reverse. It is very noticeable, and even the original tech who we showed problem to at dealership admitted it sounded bad/wrong. But after we left vcl there for repair, we were told none were needed. . . This is "just how these vehicles are". I don't think so! have owned 4/4 SUV's before, including a prior Grand Cherokee. . . And never heard anything like this. I am worried that this slamming could cause parts to loosen or break, and if that happens while vcl moving, could be disastrous! could this also cause problem of parts being just somewhat out of alignment, which could cause a strange wearing of parts that would not normally occur?.
Since date of purchase wipers did not function, air conditioner intermittently fails to blow air for periods up to 30-60 seconds. Can occur repeatedly, with only seconds in between. Overhead computer system repeatedly sounds alarms that the lift gate is open when it is closed. Rear defroster comes on at its own whim, and at times will not turn off unless key is turned off. Transmission was replaced. On board panic system (integrated with the keyless entry system) goes off at will, sounding the horn and flashing lights. Occurs almost continually when vehicle is locked. The body control module was replaced, numerous attempts at investigating the wiring, replacing connectors and sensors have still left us with the defects. The vehicle is well known in the community because it simply cannot be silenced. We have been told that numerous other 1999 and 2000 models of Grand Cherokees have had similar problems, especially with respect to the transmission which has caught fire when it failed during driving (as related by a Jeep dealer service department) we were lucky my husband noticed a problem before it reached the point of no return. When at a stop the vehicle lurches forward. When placing car into gear the car doesn't move.
Daimler Chrysler has been aware of these problems, been on TSB software , but no recall but I have been continued to be mislead and now, I will proceed with either the lemon law or arbitration at this point. For a vehicle that cost $33,000 you would not of expected these types of problems, and when they occur Chrysler should own up to its responsibilities and fix the issues, customers have been misleard in thinking there getting a reliable and dependable vehicle and with this last problem I have encounter , there needs to be some justice and compensation for what I have to pay out , but yet I continue to pay my monthly payments . No safety defect mentione din summary.
Front rotors continually warp and transmission shifting defective.

The automatic transmission has an erratic hard clunk shift from 1 to 2, as well as a down shift from 3 to 2, dealer says this is normal. The vehicle pulls to the right, dealer confirmed that the left rear toe was out of spec. , dealer slotted rear trailing arm mounting point, but car still pulls to the right.
The vehicles jumps when coming to a complete stop. Feels as if the vehicle is being rear ended (at a low speed from the rear). We have taken the vehicle to payton wells four or five times the their have been unable to repair the problem. Please feel free to contract us if you require further information.
Vehicle lunges forward after coming to a complete stop.
Took to dealer 6 times for transmission problems. Dealer told me that they don't know how to fix. Was in a fender bender on 7-25-99 do to transmission hesitation and jerking. Going to arbitration on 8-9-99.
Vehicle sag/hesitate, attempt to stall upon acceleration,dealer duplicated problem on test drive, but unable to fix. Noted transmission fluid was also 1 quart low, unusual for new vehicle.
Whenever making right hand turns would get a clicking noise in cv joint. Vehicle would cutoff without warning. Speed not a factor. When in reverse, the vehicle would cut off. Had been to dealer 15 times for problem & nothing was found wrong.
No truck.
While in reverse and going into drive, the vehicle stalled unexpectedly which might have caused an accident. Also, when starting vehicle with the headlight switch on, the headlights go off when instructed to be on. Been to dealer several times. Dealer cannot determine problem, they say it might be the computer module, but have not fixed that part.
We have had consistant problems with the transmision. It has been in the shop 4 times so far, and they can't seem to find a problem. My daughter is driving this car, and she had to drive back from chicago (300) miles with the selector in neutral in order for it to engage. I took it back to the shop, and they couldn't find anything wrong. This is a leased car that is due in oct. 2002, and if I could, I would return it now. This car is a major concern with me, and both the dealer and Chrysler seem to imply that nothings wrong with it.
Transmission doesn't want to shift into 2nd and 3rd gears. Has been to the dealer ship 4 times, they cannot locate the problem. Also jump from park to reverse resulting in front driver door being damaged by hitting a carport pole. Still having the problem to this date.
Low beams dim, visibility approx. 30 feet. Both headlight lenses have cloudy film inside. I have noticed this on several vehicles at dealer.
Vehicle experiences backfires, jumps forward when stopping and rpm's fluctuate continually, replacement of transmission did not rectify problems.
Vehicle shifted out of park into reverse even with the park indicater positioned in park, resulting in an accident.
Due to transmission ,vehcle will lurch forward when idling at a stop or at random, and driving at approximately 20mph with foot off accelerator. Vehicle will clunk very hard lifting consumer off seat. Vehicle was taken to dealer 6 times, but dealer could not find cause, and consumer felt dealer was in denial. Consumer states the transmission seems to be a problem, it experiences rough shifting, bumping, and clunking.

At complete stop or when starting from complete stop there is a loud clang or a loud thud in the transmition assembly and the car lunges forward as if rear ended. The dealer claims that Chrysler is aware of this problem in a number of 1999 Grand Cherokee limited cars; but there is no known fix or solution yet! contacted Jeep customer relations and complains department in detroit. They claimed ignorance of this issue.
Annoying lurch or thump from transmission upon stop or when releasing brakes from stop--dealer/manufacturer will not acknoledge problem exists.
When putting into reverse vehicle will jolt backwards ,sounding like metal against metal, and it has a very rough shift. Please provide further information.
While picking up vehicle at dealership from brake service and upon leaving parking lot at about 20 mph, vehicle stalled. Consumer returned to dealership, and mechanic stated transmission had to be rebuilt. *akconsumers main complaint is about the brake/rotors which have been ground and replaced 3 times in less than three years.
Transmission would be dragging. Would be in right gear, but not pulling. This is a leased vehicle. Rear wheel bearings are failing on vehicle. Have taken vehicle to dealership 3 times for bearings.
