Four problems related to transmission slip out of gear have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the gear shift box was bumped and the vehicle shifted out of gear. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was to be inspected, diagnosed and repaired. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 149,000.
Over a period of several weeks, the transmission behaved erraticallty, often shifting out of gear into neutral or from neutral into drive. These shifts would occur when the engine was running but with no one touching the gear shift lever. Most often, this occurred at stop signs or lights. Then, on June 20, the transmission shifted into low gear on its own and remained locked there. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have occurred. However, since taking the vehicle in for transmission repair or replacement, the dealer seems unable to fix the vehicle and has not been able to return it to me. This suggests a substantial and potentially inherent transmission problem with serious safety implications.
Automatic transmission malfunctioned, causing it to jump out of gears and could result in a crash. Also vehicle was on and in "park" position and the occupant was standing outside of the vehicle when it jumped out of gear and accelerated. Occupant had to jump into the vehicle and stop it. Dealer will replace the transmisson system. Please provide further information and VIN#.
