6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2020

I was driving down the road and all of a sudden all the lights on the dash lit up and then the vehicle completely shut down, with no power. This happened while I was driving, so thank god it happen late when there was no traffic. I immediately smelled electrical burning and there was absolutely no power to the vehicle. I had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. The dealership determined that the alternator burned up and damaged the battery. This exact issue is recall t36 but Jeep states that that recall does not apply to my vehicle because I have a 220amp alternator. Obviously, if my vehicle experienced the exact same symptom that the t36 recall is for, the 220amp alternator is also affected. The initial repair cost me $1500. A month later I had to have another repair for $3000, due to electrical issues, where the parking assist and blind spot assist modules went out, along with a headlamp motor assembly. It has been 3 months since that repair and now I have more electrical issues. The check engine light has come on again and I get a service 4wd system, the heat is intermittent, and my temp gauge doesn't move. I have been emailing back and forth with Jeep customer care but they just keep saying that the t36 alternator issue doesn't apply to my vehicle.

7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2020

The vehicle was in motion and a message indicating the park assist needed serving came on. In . 5 of a mile my driver's seat belt light came on, even though I had the seat belt secured. I drove another . 5 of a mile and many additional lights came on in my vehicle. I pulled it off the road and my power steering went out. Then the windshield wipers came on and the car stopped working. It would not turn on again. The alternator and battery were both replaced. The same exact thing happened the next day. My alternator was melted when the garage looked at my car after towing the second time.

8 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2020

My alternator burnt up and ruined my computer in my Jeep as well. I was driving my car and many of the lights on the dash board went out. My power steering also went out. The alternator was so hot, it crumbled and melted the casing. Chrysler will not admit to the alternator being faulty or needing to be replaced in the recall for the vehicle, stating it was not one of the alternators affected.

9 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2020

Feb 13 2020. Wife and I were driving our vehicle on public street in olympia, wa. While at a stop light, the vehicle did a total power fail. Everything stopped, even the dome lights. With the help of strangers, the vehicle was pushed onto business parking lot to wait for tow. Battery tested good, alternator was removed and tested good.

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2019

I was driving to work one morning, when I began to smell something burning. I then saw smoke coming from under the hood. I immediately pulled over, on the side of the street, turned the vehicle off, and popped the hood. I saw that the alternator was literally on fire! it then, burned out and began to smoke. I then, disconnected the battery and called a tow truck. Needless to say, I had to replace the alternator. I thought this was random, until I saw the issue online. I contacted the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealership where I purchased the vehicle, but they said they knew nothing of this issue. Can I be reimbursed for the purchase of the replacement alternator?.

Ah.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

Red indicator light looking like a battery came on about 3 miles from destination. Within another mile, other warning lights began to come on. Wipers came on (yes, they came on, not off). Then navigation screen went blank. Next car lost all power while driving. Suddenly lost steering, brakes, etc. Even emergency flashers would not activate. Smelled like something was burning. Nearby repair shop stated the alternator had burned-up and killed the battery. Repair shop replaced alternator and battery, but warning light came on again with smell of something once again burning within 2 miles of repair shop. Returned vehicle to repair shop, but they are not capable of fixing some type of computer module. This vehicle had a safety recall (number t36). I received at least 2 notices from Jeep (fca), but in each case was told parts were not available to resolve this safety recall (alternator diode thermal fatigue) [t36/NHTSA 17v-435]. I also brought the vehicle to jeff wyler Jeep Chrysler (southgate, ky) where I purchased the vehicle and they said parts were not available to resolve the problem. I was told they would notify me when parts become available, but never received any notification. Now, the car suddenly lost all power while driving as described above. Had this happened at night, on the highway, someone could easily have been killed. In summary, when vehicle came to a complete stop, without power, it was on a city street, and I was making a turn onto a smaller street with the hope of getting out of traffic.

13 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2018

Alternator failed due to recall. I was not notified of this until after having failed and needing to be towed after being stranded on the side of the road in the middle of the night. All the cars functions had completely failed. The car was unable to be moved to a safe place, doors were locked, leaving my dogs locked and gated into the cargo area until lowing assistance arrived. Since the alternator was fixed I have had multiple visits to the dealership for replacement of battery, Jeep failing two more times while driving down the road, needing additional towing assistance. Multiple electrical malfunctions continue to occur, including: forward collision warning, "brake warning flashing for no apparent reason. The passenger side heat failed needing to be replaced. All of the seat heaters within the vehicle have failed needing to be replaced. Most recently the drivers seat move forward function has stopped working, make the vehicle difficult and unsafe to drive as it is not at the appropriate drive distance. Contact to dealer to discuss fixing issues as they are electrical and most likely due to recall of the alternator. Jeep dealer declined that it was a related issue and that Jeeps are known for these issues. Car is felt to be unreliable and unsafe to continue to drive at this point with the unknown reasons and causes for the recurrent malfunctions.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2018

While driving locally on a city street, heard a low whining sound, followed by the dashboard battery warning light being illuminated. Sound increased and decreased with vehicle speed. Drove immediately home, less than a mile, parked the vehicle, opened the hood and isolated the location of the whining sound to the alternator area. At this time I could also smell a burning odor (being an electrician). I put a meter to the battery terminals and recorded a voltage of 11. 5,indicating that the alternator had failed. There were no visible signs of smoke that I could see as the time was about 9pm. But the smell of an electrical issue was clearly present.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2018

Car completely shut off. No power to entire car. Found out it was a faulty alternator that was under recall.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2018

The automatic charging system light came on 2 hours into driving north on the highway to wisconsin from chicago. There was no human action that correlated with the light coming on. It simply came on when going consistent speed on the highway in no traffic. I learned from the driver's manual that this most likely meant that the alternator had failed and I needed to get assistance immediately. I took the car into a repair shop on a Thursday where it would remain for 10 days as things began to unfold. The employees of the repair shop could identify no fault in the alternator after thorough inspection and driving tests. The warning light had turned off. However, after it had been cleared of all inspection and turned on, there was an enormous failure in the car causing it to smoke. Without warning, the alternator caused such a massive short that it not only failed itself, but also broke the car's engine computer. I come to find out that there was a recall by Chrysler (t36) for this specific issue and included 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee's. I was never made aware of this recall but there is no question that this failure is specific to the manufacturing errors by Chrysler Jeep. There have been a total of 10 recalls on the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 3 of which have been specific to this vehicle, and clearly, now a 4th. This could have been a been an incredibly dangerous situation and the failure by Chrysler to notify me or include my vehicle in their recall is preposterous. I have documentation regarding repair and claims attached. More info and claim documents available upon request.

17 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

18 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2018

Alternator and pcm was supposedly replaced in July 2017. However, I now have the same problem and it is worse. The battery light will come on initially then all of a sudden the windshield wipers start, radio will shut off and then the air conditioning suddenly started to blow out how air and it was blown at the feet. I tried rolling down the window but was unable to do so. This happened a few more times when under regular stress of driving on the highway!.

19 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2018

I had a recall on alternator which I had recall on and didn't received a letter in the mail. So one day I was driving with my family and I smell smoke coming my hood which I thought my car was on fire so I pull over and got out the car and call road side service to tow my car to championship of decatur. They fix the recall on the alternator and didn't replace my battery which was low. They charge my battery and everything was fine so I pick my car up and when down the street for 4 miles and my car cut off again so I had to get to auto zone to get a battery. I have a new battery and alternator and my Jeep is still no powering on. I do not feel safe driving my vehicle anymore I have a 1 year daughter and another baby due any day now. So how can we resole this issue its not safe having a electrical system problem.

The vehicle was taken to the same dealer a second time and the computer system was reset. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 96,000.

21 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2018

After returning home from a 190 mile trip, during which we experienced no maintenance issues or warning lights, my wife and I parked our Jeep in our underground garage. Upon unpacking our car we could smell, what appeared to be, an electrical smell with a cloud of smoke forming around the car. We were forced to use the emergency key to reenter the car to inspect it for fire and to open the hood in order to check the electrical system. We observed the car for approximately ten minutes until the smoke cleared to ensure there was no lingering fire. The Jeep was towed to an auto shop where they determined that the alternator had completely shorted out, thereby destroying the entire electrical system including the alternator, computer and battery. We consider ourselves very fortunate that this incident did not occur while we were driving on the interstate, or the chesapeake bay bridge which was on our route. We have since learned that Chrysler had issued a recall for this alternator in 2017. However, we were never notified about the recall. We are concerned that this could happen to someone else on the highway while they are driving and could be devastating if they lose control of the car due to the loss of power, or worse, a fire. We are hoping to be reimbursed by Chrysler for the cost of repair which totaled $2,900.

22 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2018

My car was recalled for the alternator problem and repaired. In the last couple of weeks the vehicle is making the same noises it did wh n the alternator failed.

23 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2018

We loaded up to go to the desert (clear summer day with temperatures near 80 degrees fahrenheit), stopped to get gas and ice (Jeep was running the entire time) and once we got on the way there, the battery light came on, then an odd sound was heard then whitish electrical smelling smoke started pouring out of the engine compartment, this happened within 8 - 10 seconds total). I grabbed my extinguisher and popped the hood and saw that the smoke appeared to be coming from around the alternator and steam was everywhere. I also noticed that the motor was overheated (but no temperature light and no fans were turning). We turned around and made it the 3 blocks back to the house when the Jeep died and without power steering and brakes we almost collided with a parked car. We parked it in the middle of the street to cool off and to obtain assistance to push it into my garage. It was found that my alternator had a diode that shorted to ground. Please actually read the following: there are at least 38 other complaints concerning the same chain of events on NHTSA website. Alt shorts, destroys the battery, and tipm/pcm. Fca refuses to expand 1 of 3 open recalls to include my make/model and many others. Nhtsa refuses to actually hold Jeep/fca accountable. Check p60-14v634 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground) expanded multiple times, t36-17v435 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground)expanded multiple times, t75-17v741 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground). The data in NHTSA data shows that from years 2007 to 2018, fca us, llc models badged 2012 had the highest percent of total recalls of any year owning 18% of the 24,053,941 total recalls fca family had. How does this not flag the NHTSA to fight for us? the NHTSA fined fca 120,000,000 for their addmitted unefectual recall process. I have so much more data. Sad.

24 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

A week ago my battery light came on in my car on my way home. Luckily I was able to get home before it died. We drove my car to an independent mechanic that we always go to get it diagnosed. My mechanic said I made it just in time because when they went to start my vehicle it was completely dead. They diagnosed that I had a bad battery and replaced it. They also identified that the alternator was bad and said there was a recall on it (I never received a recall notice on this part though). My car was towed to a nearby Chrysler dealership and they completed all the open recalls on it, including the alternator belt. Then my car was towed back to my independent mechanic. After my mechanic ran my car for 20 minutes the car shut off and it was found that the powertrain control module shorted. I immediately called Chrysler customer service to report the issue. It has been over a week and I have spoken to 5 different customer service agents. Every single one has told me something different and a different process I have to follow. My car has been towed back to the dealership and just sitting there. It has been over a week since I have had my car. I just heard from a customer service agent today that the car has to be diagnosed by the dealership and they have to declare that the pcm is not working. I have no idea what will happen after that. I am really trying to get them to pay for this and not go through a reimbursement process because I don't have faith I will actually get reimbursed in the end. I am so disgusted with the treatment Chrysler has given me. They obviously are trying everything to get out of paying this. Well they picked the wrong person to mess with, I will not back down.

25 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Was driving back from florida to PA when the alternator went on the vehicle. The engine was smoking and we lost all power to the vehicle. Had the vehicle towed to a dealership in north charleston, SC.

26 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

This vehicle is subject to a recall. It has been open for months. I have called the dealership to try and get the car fixed as it is a safety issue. They say that a replacement alternator is not available. I bought this car for my kids to drive and the fact that it could die during operation and has been recalled but can't be fixed is disconcerting. What are you doing to make Jeep honor the recall and make the repairs?.

27 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2017

The alternator has been whining for about 6 months and the battery light periodically illuminates. There is a recall on this issue but the part is on back order if I want the recall completed, they can have it changed tomorrow if I pay for it out of pocket. Makes no sense when people's lives are at stake.

31 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2017

Saturday while it was raining we were driving on the highway and all of a sudden our vehicle shut off, the breaks locked up. We were unable to put our hazards on and barely made it to the side of the shoulder, during this other cars were honking at us. We found out that our vehicle has a recall t36, while this isnt the only issue but there is no fix at this time till late February of 2018. The only repair that the dealership can do is put another faulty alternator our Jeep. This is not the first time this happen. In 2015, this same exact thing happen except we were on a side street. At that time the recall was not known. So if replaced this would be the 3rd alternator put in our Jeep. I do not feel safe driving it, and feel that Chrysler should replace our vehicle if the part is not yet created. They would like to repair the vehicle by putting in a faulty alternator, which could possibly result in another issue. While I do not feel safe in the car, I do not feel safe driving it on the highway, luckily the car around me were aware of the surrounds because we could have cause a crash easily since the hazards didn't work.

32 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2017

The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 20 mph, the battery indicator suddenly illuminated and a whining noise was heard coming from the engine area. Also, a burning electrical odor and smoke were present under the hood. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the alternator failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer (brown Jeep in patchogue, NY) and the manufacturer were notified in reference to the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number 14v634000 (electrical system) although the failure was identical. The failure mileage was 103,000.

33 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2017

Every single one of the warning indicators mounted in the dash are going off alternately in rotation, front collision and blind spot warning no longer work either. My vehicle is subject to the following recall, the Jeep, four months after the recall was an ounce, still hasn't supplied the needed replacement alternators specified in the recall: manufacturer recall numbert36 NHTSA recall number17v-435 recall statusrecall incomplete, remedy not yet available.

34 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2017

On October 22, 2017 my car started to heat up and turn off on me. When I had it towed to the dealer they advised me that my alternator went bad as a result of a recall that the alternator had. The dealer told me that the recall part was not available and I would have to pay out of pocket for it and then get reimbursed. While the alternator got repaired the dealer contacted me letting me know that as a result of the alternator getting messed up it affected the powertrain control module. I contacted the fca and told them the issue and they reassured me that if the powertain module was affected as a result of the alternator that that would also be reimbursed. The customer sales rep also confirmed this to the service advisor of the dealership. Now three months later I get a phone call that they will not be able to reimburse me for powertrain module because they have yet to receive the alternator piece and haven't looked into what the alternator could affect. How does one rep confirm that it is going to be covered and another rep turn around and deny my claim. Had my alternator never blew my powertrain would have still worked properly. Now how do I go about getting my money back.

35 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2017

While driving maybe 30mph, I attempted to make a left turn when my Jeep immediately went dead (no lights sound or anything else) and the steering wheel locked up. I was able to move the steering wheel just enough to coast to the side of the road but couldn't straighten it due to the steering wheel not turning and car completely dying. I attended to jump it , but it wouldn't start even after being connected for 20+ minutes. When taken off the jumper cables, it would immediately die again. During this time, the windshield wipers would start without moving without me touching them. I had to have it towed to my house and the tow truck was also unable to start it or put it in neutral to get it on the truck . After a couple hours, I was able to jump start it with my portable jumper but it died completely after it was sitting for a couple minutes. Now being told it's electrical problems that caused this . I noticed another recall with similar problems but apparently mine has yet to be included in this recall of the alternator/electrical.
