I was on my way to work driving about 70mph on the freeway. After a couple of minutes my hood opened up on its own and slammed against my windshield which caused my windshield to shatter. I was nearly in multiple wrecks while on the freeway because 90 to 95% of my windshield was covered by the hood of my car. This was by far the scariest thing that I have ever faced. I nearly lost my life on the freeway. I am not able to drive my Jeep at the moment and honestly prefer not to drive it anymore. I strongly feel like something should be done about this. No one should ever have to go through this.

Just disgusted with the number of repairs I have needed to make to this vehicle. In the last six years the following repairs have been done: brakes replaced 3 times and need to be done again door window motor cooling fan, radiator evaporator coils hood lifters-hood will not stay up drivers door clunks starter compressor leaking axle seals and now I have a cracked head on the engine. The Jeep just failed out of the blue. Glad I was close to home. This vehicle is a lemon. Buy american again--most likely not. Are our "american" vehicles being built with inferior parts? or are they programmed to be obsolete within a few years?.
: the contact stated while driving 70mph the hood flew upward with limited visibility. The contact managed to pull over without incident. Due to the damaged hood which was bent vertically in front of the windshield, the vehicle was towed to an automotive body repair shop to await inspection.

Car purchased 6/20/05 with 0 miles. Car taken to repair 7/11/05 with 450 miles. Some where on the residential streets a pebble went into the car and damaged the air compressor. Freon has been leaking since the impact. The service dept can not pin point just how long the freon has been leaking but all I know is that I am 6 months pregnant and have 2 other little girls that have been inhailing this freon. The car damage is not covered under waranty since this is a road hazard. However, the car is designed to drive through mountains and rocky roads. There is a designer fault since the new cars do not have a protection grid /net to prevent debris from doing such damage. The older models do have this. When I asked the service dept of prevention devise they only stated that the car was designed this way and that I am not the only person with this simular problem with this new Jeep laredo 2005.

Pulled on to highway from driveway proceed about 1 block when the hood flew voilently open. There were no cars in front of me and a truck and 2 autos behind me I got the Jeep to the side of the road and stopped. The safety latch and the regular latch failed. I am being told it is not a problem and therefore the manufacter is not going to take any responisiblity for the $1067 body shop estimate or my frayed nerves. I found two or 3 other hood problems listed on your website but can tell if they are similar. Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem. I am left with the feeling from the Jeep people that I did something wrong and they don't care to help. The safety latch never caught or at least it didn't hold , and there was not evidence of damage to either latch.
Consumer states that while driving the hood popped open, causing poor visibilty, almost causing an accident. Dealer contacted. Mr.
I read in the paper you were investigating hoods opening on 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokees. My Jeep hood came open while I was driving down I-65 in alabama approximately at the date listed in the questionaire. That date is an estimate. I was driving at about 65 mph when the hood popped up, partially obscuring my vision. I was near an exit, so I managed to safely get off the road and stop and re-latch the hood. At the time I thought I must have not closed it properly after checking the oil, but now that I know there is an investigation underway I thought it was wise to report this incident anyway. I can not confirm or deny that I improperly closed the hood before this incident I just don't remember. Dt.
Hood cable snapped.
