2 Tailgate problem of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/14/2018

On five separate occasions, the tailgate of the vehicle has opened on its own. It has happened during various hours of the day, both daytime and overnight. And on three of those occasions the home link system has also been activated which then opened the garage door causing damage to the rear of the tailgate. Also, since the onset of this issue the home link button does not always work even in close proximity to the garage door itself.

3 Tailgate problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/15/2016

Failure of automatic rear tailgate and associated obstruction/safety sensor mechanisms. Tailgate opens to within an inch or two of full height then silently starts to fall back at an increasing velocity and slams shut. Pressing the control button to stop the fall does not work nor does the rapid drop stop when encountering an obstruction. When tailgate first started to reverse direction I reached in to press the button to stop or reverse it and it continued downward and pinned my arm and caused me to wrench my back. Had anyone leaned into the back as it was going up, it would have silently slammed back down on their head or neck resulting in serious injury as the tailgate is quite heavy and quickly gains substantial momentum and force. Since the tailgate never reaches full height it appears that safety interlocks do not get activated/triggered hence it becomes a dead drop. It appears that the cause is a loss of pressure in the right rear strut, though other electronic factors may be considered. This is a very dangerous defect that has the potential to cause serious or even a fatal injury. A repair is scheduled at the dealer on may 25. Other incidents of this type have been reported on google search.

4 Tailgate problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/30/2011

This is for a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo (< 6 months old) the Jeep had been parked outside on a warm day. I went to go open the tailgate, and the tailgate only opened part way before stopping. I then nudged the door open so it would go all the way and the glass on the tailgate exploded, cutting two of the people standing behind the vehicle. At that point the tailgate opened all the way and the spoiler at the top came off. I contacted the dealership who submitted pictures to Chrysler. Based on pictures alone, they stated that they could not determine that it was a manufacturer defect and therefore denied my claim to cover under warranty. I was instructed to contact the company customer service line and request that they send someone out to take a look at the car. They never sent anyone else out. Apparently the district manager looked at the pictures and the description of what happened and made the decision to not cover it. Chrysler claimed they couldn't overturn the district manager's decision. They strung me along for 2 weeks over the phone to tell me this. There is really no other reason than a defect that would cause this to occur.
