36 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2010 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 12/09/2009

2010 Jeep Liberty with only 1,939 miles on the vehicle the driver and passenger side air bags deployed while under normal driving conditions. The driver was struck in the head with the air bag. The impact caused the driver to become disoriented and drive 200 miles with no memory of the drive and events that occurred in a 4 hour time period. The driver regained awareness after the low fuel warning chime started to ring. At some point during that 4 hour drive the driver side front and rear tires went off of the road causing a piece plastic in the rear driver side wheel well to break off. Other than the broken piece plastic the was no physical damage to the vehicle body or suspension of the vehicle. There was substantial damage to the interior of the vehicle due to the side air bag deployment. Chrysler has refused to investigate the cause of the air bag deployment based on the piece of broken plastic in the left rear wheel well.

37 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 05/17/2007

I had a very serious car accident where the 2004 Jeep Liberty sport rolled over several times after swerving on the highway going 68 mph. The front airbags did not go off in this kind of crash. There was no front impact. However, the vehicle was equipped with side curtain airbags which did not go off. I was very surprised that they did not go off in this kind of impact when there was clear impact on the driver side and passenger side doors , both the driver and passanger side door windows shattered. The vehicle had been totaled. I believe there was additional bruising and head impact of the driver and passanger due the side curtain airbags not going off.

38 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled several times without warning. The contact stated that the transmission locked and caused engine failure. The contact had a repair shop replace the transmission and the engine. The dealer stated then that the recall repairs were not abe to be completed because the part was not available for an extended period of time the contact was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 12v527000 (air bags), 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) and 15v046000 (air bags). The contact went to a second dealer and they also were not able to supply the part for the three recall repairs. While parking in the garage, the driver side air bag exploded without warning before the contact opened the door to exit the vehicle. The contact put both arms up and the force of the air bag impacted the contact's arms with burns and pains in the shoulders. The contact received medical attention due to the minor injuries from the driver side air bag deployment. The contact also noticed that there was a white smoke substance that emitted from the vehicle. An independent investigator was sent to investigate the air bag failure. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for longer than a month due to the fact that the part was not available to repair the vehicle for several months. The vehicle was not repaired and the contact was still waiting on instructions from the manufacturer on a remedy to repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was not available.

40 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 07/16/2005

My Jeep Liberty was broadsided (left side) by a vehicle that ran a red light. My vehicle was stopped at the time of the colision, the other vehile was traveling at 45-50 mph. The point of imact was the driver's door and front fender. The left front tire/wheel/spindle was torn off the vehile upon impact. The side air bags did not deploy, fortunately no one was injuried as a result of this failure. Daimlerchrysler was contacted and did investigate the incident. The letter summarizing their investigation stated the following: "our test confirm that the air bag restraint system in your vehile is operating as designed and functioned normally for the conditions to which it was exposed. The air bag did not deploy because the vehicle never reached the level of deceleration required to activate deployment. " I have made repeated attempts to contact daimierchrysler to explain this statement but have been unsuccessful. The vehilcle was totalled and has been turned over to the insurance company.

41 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 02/16/2005

On February 16, 2005 while traveling eastbound I-80 in salt lake city I hit some black ice and lost control of my 2002 Jeep Liberty. I was traveling freeway speeds and had a front impact along with a driver side rollover and a slide of approximately 100 yards. All of the emergency personnel that responded to my accident voiced shock and concern that none of the airbags deployed. Further, I have heard that if the g-force was not great enough to deploy the side airbags, the Jeep should not have rolled (I have no idea if that is true). I had, and still have, serious concerns about why my airbags did not deploy and do not trust that in the event of another accident they would deploy, regardless of the severity. I contacted Jeep and asked them to look into it. They did do some investigation. However, I was told that because my Jeep was not preserved for their inspection there was nothing they could do. I have sent them several e-mails explaining that I do have photo that document the damage and show that the airbag did not deploy. They have just disregarded my complaints. I also have concerns about the ease in which my Jeep rolled over. This concern has also been dismissed. I would like to know that my family is going to be safe if anther unfortunate accident occurs.
