I opened my hood and looked at the oil filter housing and there was oil all over the top of the motor. I went to my local Jeep dealer and was told that this year Wrangler has a big problem with this and that there is no recall. I don't understand how a safety issue like this that mopar has not been called on the carpet for a fire hazard like this and that they are aware of the premature failure of this part. I was told the repair would be roughly $600. Could you help me resolve this issue and what appropriate action I can take. My vehicle only has 35,000 miles on it. Not to mention my driveway is a mess :(.

19 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 10/05/2019

Noticed oil on the garage floor in January 2020. Engine is leaking oil from the oil cooler that is on top on the engine. Could be a fire hazard as oil drains down the back of the engine. Vehicle has 86000 miles on it but has been leaking for a while. Now it is leaking very bad and can smell burnt oil when driving. Looking on forums online and many 2014 to 2016 3. 6 engines have this issue. Issue seams to be from faulty gaskets and in some cases cracked housings on the oil cooler. Mine is no longer covered under any warranty. I thought it was from the oil pan gasket at first, but when I started to smell oil burning, I started looking closer at it and found oil laying in the valley on top of the engine.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2016 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/16/2019

The oil filter housing assembly is made of plastic that cracks. This leads to oil leaking and several inches of oil sits in the v of the hot engine until it spills over. This is a definite fire hazard. Fca needs to recall with a redesigned part made of metal. I have already replaced mine twice in 1 yr. Replacing it with the same part is not fixing it. Failed at 29k miles and now at 42k miles. This is a $1000 repair each time. Mine was covered under power train warranty but this is unacceptable quality and practices. I noticed oil leaking underneath the engine again and this time I thought it was the rear main seal. I noticed burnt oil in the v of the engine block as well. To my suprise, same part has failed already. Parts failing at this low of mileage are a design flaw that is being ignored by fca. Something needs to be done. Oh. . . One last thing. . While the mechanic had it apart, he noticed the head gasket was leaking too so he replaced that at 29k miles. No wonder Chrysler/fiat is the worst car maker in the world.

21 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/17/2019

On 4/17/19, I was driving my 2014 Jeep Wrangler jk stopped at a stop light (with my window down) when I detected the odor of burning oil. I thought it was from someone else's car. On 4/21/19, I detected the odor again, and when I got home I observed oil leaking and all over the underside of my vehicle. It also appeared to be dripping on my hot exhaust which is a fire hazard. I took the vehicle to my mechanic and he said it's due a cracked plastic oil cooler housing, it's going to set me back a lot of money, and the issue may happen again. I'm lucky that the oil did not catch on fire. I've done research online and see that numerous 2014 Jeep Wranglers have this oil leakage due to design flaw utilizing plastic parts.

22 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/05/2019

24 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2012 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/20/2019

The oil filter housing has a manufacture flaw, which causes engine oil to leak in the engine bay and onto the exhaust. Thousands of customers have had this same issue in their Jeep Wranglers. It does not matter the age or mileage of the vehicle. The malfunction has accrued in Jeep Wranglers with as little as 2k miles on them. The malfunction is not only a health but safety risk to drivers and their passengers. When driving the cabin fills up with smoke from burning oil and has a high potential to ignite and cause a fire. When Jeep repairs this issue they use a new part number, and not the stock application. I want to point out that I'm finding this is the case with a number of Chrysler fiats brands with the penastar 3. 6l motor. I my have this issue now, and have had it on both of my 2012 and 2013 Jeep Wranglers. Again, there are thousands of reparota online with Jeep owners with the 3. 6l penastar motor. 2012-2014. The issue was fixed by Jeep engineers in mid 2015.

27 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/09/2018

Oil filter housing, cracked resulting in loss of large amounts of oil, engine has 82,000 miles and oil has been changed every 3000-3500, using manf recommended oil and filter. Started leaking large amount of oil and burning smell, dealer stated that the oil filter housing was cracked due to over tightening of oil filter cap. This is not true, have for the last 4 years used a torque wrench to the manf specifications printed on the oil filter cap. Reviewing this on the internet and sees to be a common problem on the penstar engine which changed from bottom mount to top mount oil filter. Many others have had the replacement covered under the 100,000 mile warranty but this local dealership states it was user error and refuses to cover. Would like for NHTSA to review the number of issues other Jeeps have had with this part breaking, as dealer warned this is a potential fire hazard with the oil leaking.

28 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Bought my 2014 Jeep Wrangler sport in April 2017, it has a little over 44,000 miles. I noticed a smell of burnt oil, I havent changed the oil recently. After doing some research it appears as the oil filter housing adapter is cracked. Identified as part number 68105583aa. This is a huge issue, and according to the forums I have read a continuing problem. Why is there no recall on this? my understanding is that Chrysler is aware of the problem and has replaced the part with part 68105583ae. Not a happy customer. I hate to spend almost 30,000 dollars and have to repair it after drivinf it 7,000 miles. Complete dissapointment.

29 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

While driving down a toll road smoke started coming up from the floor of my Jeep. You could see it and smell it. We are talking a lot! there wasn't a place for me to pull over immediately. The worst part is having my 8 year old son in the vehicle with me. Do you have any idea how scared I was that my Jeep may be on fire and could blow up with my child inside?! we pulled over and jumped out. I looked under and there was a small flame on the exhaust . My Jeep dumped all of its oil and it spilled all over the hot exhaust causing a fire. The oil was burning underneath my Jeep. This is not okay. This defective cooling housing could eventually kill someone. I'm livid my son was in the vehicle. Even moreso that there is tons of complaints and you've done nothing! I'm extremely disappointed Chrysler! my family has been buying your vehicles for close to 20 years. Making any of us pay to fix something you all know is defective is wrong! and shame on anyone that doesn't see this a major safety issue.

30 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/11/2017

Leaking massive amounts of oil from oil filter/ cooler housing. . Oil sits on top of motor huge fire hazard. . Leaks while car is in motion. . 31 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2013 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

The vehicle is consuming an excessive amount of oil (more than a quart per 250 miles) and is overheating when under load on long climbs. Overheating and/or excessive oil consumption causes the vehicle to go into "limp" mode which is a sudden and complete loss of power where the engine will not go over 3000 rpm. When oil level drops to about 3 quarts low, the check engine light comes on and the Jeep goes into limp mode. The dealership has replaced valve tappets, the left camshaft and the left cylinder head under my Chrysler "maxcare" lifetime warranty, but the problem persists. Jeep customer care is now telling me the repair may no longer be covered by my lifetime service contract (reference Jeep customer care case number 32175924). The sudden loss of power when at highway speeds from overheating and/or oil loss is a safety issue.

32 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2011 Jeep Wrangler

33 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/16/2017

Arrived home in vehicle and had a strong odor of burning oil. Immediately saw a puddle of oil under the vehicle and oil on the exhaust was smoking. The oil filter/cooler housing had begun leaking. This vehicle has 44,000 miles on it and never been off road. This seems to be a very common part failure and Chrysler needs to address it. The amount of oil it lost in a short amount of time was enough to cause a fire. There was over 1/2 inch of oil in the valley between the heads and oil had blown from the motor to the rear differential. This part is conveniently not covered under the 5 yr 100,000 mile engine warranty and the dealer said the part has not been upgraded.
