36 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 09/01/2002

Daimler Chrysler has been unresponsive to my requests for replacement of this part under "implied warranty" or anything else, even though the car problem websites (and yours) are full of reports of exhaust manifold failure in late '90's model Wranglers. They claim to have no record of the problem, even thought the part has been redesigned. The dealer here has been great, but can't do much without manufacturer support. Here's hoping that with enough information on this part, customers can get some satisfaction! dt.

37 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/28/2002

Exhaust manifold cracked in several places with only 56k on Jeep. Dealer says there was no special warranty for this part, but was plenty aware of the high incidence of failure with this part. Independent mechanics shop that repaired my Jeep said that his friends shop has repaired several hundred of the same vehicle as mine, just in the orlando florida area. This part should be recalled, dangerous fumes from this obviously defective part could leak into cabin of Jeep, possibly knocking out the driver.

39 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/15/2002

Exhaust header split open at heat effected zone of weld.

40 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 01/15/2002

Exhaust manifold bolts are snapping off in the block of Jeep 2. 5 4 cyl engine. This problem is documented by Chrysler as a design fault problem but they will not cover it. The problem has not been repaired yet because Chrysler will not cover it and it is a very expensive fix that can't be afforded at this time. The problem is also a safety problem due to the fact that the exhaust is leaking from between the manifold and head and could get into the vehicle. The problem was first noticed in about Jan 02. The vehicle currently has 54000 miles on it. This vehicle also had a total catalytic converter failure that was covered under the emissions warranty. I feel that this problem with the exhaust manifold should be covered under, the same warranty, especially considering the fact that it was a faulty part design and not wear an tear. Catalytic converter "imploded" all the interior components came loose and began to rattle. It was replaced under the 8 year 80,000 emissions warranty. Supposedly a common problem.

41 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 08/21/2001

As I have read mentioned by others at this website, about a year after I bought the Jeep, my dash gauges would go down to zero and the airbag light would go on. This problem is a winter and wet-whether related problem. If I pound on the dashboard with my fist, sometimes the gauges will recover temporarily. If they do recover, they almost immediately go back down to zero. I spoke with a dealership about the problem. They acted surprised. I see from other peoples comments that their are numerous other occasions of this problem. I thought I was alone with this problem until earlier today when a mechanic friend of a friend mentioned someone else with the 1998 Jeep Wrangler has the exact same problem. I need a response from the government. Has there been a recall issued on this? I have also had my catalytic converter "crumble to pieces" according to a local garage. He seemd to think that there was a recall on the catalytic converters. I am at a loss as to how to find out if there indeed has been a recall. Please contact me.

42 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/25/2001

There seems to be a lot of complaints about this same problem. Hopw many does it take to get some action. No safety defect mentioned.

43 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/25/2001

About a week ago I called the dealership to report a cracked exhaust manifold. I asked if there has been any recalls of this and the service manager who was very rude told me no. Today,Friday may 25th my exhaust manifold has broken in half in two (2) spots each next ta a weld. I have a friend who is a boilermaker and a union rep. As well as an expert in all aspects of welding and metals, has told me this is defective. That it should stand high temps. And a lot longer life than this! well to tell you the truth I have had several automobiles through out the years and I have never had an exhaust manifold break or even crack on me ,ever! the service manager said I was out of warrenty and that I was out of luck. . I have even looked at te specs. On the exhaus manifold that Jeep advertises and it even says that the exhaust manifold is a long life. Please help me !.

44 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/03/2001

Had heard a noise when vehicle was started, sounded like a hole in muffler. Exhaust was coming off engine. Problem got worse. 2 pieces of hoses became one and joined, they cracked and nearly separated. They were too close to engine. Contacted manufacturer, and informed over warranty and will not repair.

45 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/29/2001

Out of town business trip. Stranded. . . . . Driving at 65mph, loud metal to metal thud under hood. Oil gauge dropped to 0, engine died, wouldn't start. No warning lights or gauge activity prior. Towed to out of town dealer. Stated oil pump failure, caused rod to go through block. Had towed back to purchase point dealership, confirmed oil pump failure. Oil changed 1 week prior as part of usual maintenance. Attempted to have Chrysler warranty as engine was more than properly maintained. Prior problems, dash cluster, exhaust system replaced do to failure. (exhaust replaced week prior to engine failure) dealership believes diamler-Chrysler should warranty engine. Diamler-Chrysler declines.

46 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/26/2001

Exhaust manifold cracked 1/8" horizontally, vehicle not showing signs of overheating, dealership and two muffler shops contacted--all indicated this is a common problem with the '1997s starting around 60k miles.

47 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 08/01/2000

Exhaust manifold is cracked in 4 places. Dealership indicated it is a common problem. Contacted Chrysler corp, but did not seem concerned. I have done enough research to know that this is happening too frequently. Why won't they issue a recall???.

48 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/01/2000

Rough idle; engine check light on; stalling, bucking at speed; noisey/cracked exhaust.

49 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 05/12/2000

I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler. The exhaust manifold cracked. At first I thought it was just mine but after some discussion with others I found this is common. Did not have it fixed immediately because at first it was not bad. I only discovered it after it became very loud. Hot exhaust blows on other engine components.

50 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/06/2000

Cracks developed in the exhaust system. Patched/welded by an independent repairs shop. Less then 20,000 miles, other cracks appeared in a diffeerent location. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that they were aware of the problem. But, repairs would still be done at consumer's cost.

51 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 12/08/1999

Car has a bucking and poor proformance at highway speeds up long hills, making 60mph impossible. It has been a poor highway performer, but has become "rough-missfiring" very badly 3 times in the car life. First 2 serious failures I got a engine check light, resulting in dealer visits. Now the engine check light was "fixed" it is not there, but the failure mode is. The car exhaust pipe end is quite black, dirty running? the valves and internal engine parts are very dirty and had to be cleaned or replaced when inspected the last 2 times. It happened at 5k, 12k, and now at 37k. The car is now almost 3 years old and I have had it in for other repairs totaling at least 6 times. This is more times than my last 10 year vehicle had. (not Jeep) am I now out of help since it is out of warrantee at 36k? I am getting worried the car will not perform to 100k like this as it may be damaged! what is the extent of my rights now? thanks,, ss.

52 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 08/01/1999

Exhaust manifold had to be replaced. There were several large cracks, luckily the problem was caught before it broke off. I still have the part if someone would like to examine it. I contacted Chrysler by phone numerous times and also sent a letter with photos of the failed part. They said it's not their problem. I talked with two mechanics who told me the part was probably defective since the Jeep was less than three years old at the time. I'm not sure when it actually started to fail, but a mechanic noticed it in August 1999 and that's when I had it repaired.

53 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 07/15/1999

The exhaust manifold/header cracks at the bottom on the inside pipe I have talked to a few other people and it is apperantly a very common problem on 1997 - 2000 models. It is an emmissions leak and also a possible corbon monoxside problem. I know of 8 Jeeps with the same problem and I haven't talked to very many people. The replacement part is the same part that is now installed on my Jeep, so I don't expect it to last very long.

54 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/25/1999

The exhaust manifolds bolds are made out of alluminum, which at high temp. Will break. That is what has happened in this case.

55 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/10/1999

Dealer said no warrenty coverage for manifold due to mileage and age. Called Chrysler help line and told maybe cold water or rain got on it and agreed I should have bought extended warrenty. Why isn't the manifold covered under the emission control warrenty. What is more important then getting the exhaust gas to the converter? instead it goes to the air and creates a safety problem if it gets in the passenger compartment. I see your data bank has other manifold failures alredy and service notices of head bolt maifold issues. Looks like a mfg. Defect since these vehicles are so young. The fuel pump was fixed under warrenty, the car would't start right. The power steering unit continues to leak slowly and the dealer suggest a seal leaking but I have to pay to fix. Great car!.

56 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

The problem with the exhaust is that it is making a clicking sound at startup everytime until the engine is good and warm. After the engine is warm it will usually stop. The higher the rpm's get the faster the sound is. I have been told that it is with the manifold. The second problem is the computer. The vehicle will not hold it's idle after gas is given to the engine. It wil drop then come back up and it will sometimes almost die.

57 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/12/1999

I took the Jeep last year to get the rattle fixed. They fixed it, but on the 1/12/02 I took it back for the same rattle. I don't believe they fixed it, just tightened the linkage up. My wife and I spent 7 hours at landers without anyone contacting us about what the problem was. They also broke a bolt off in the block that holds the exhaust manifold on, again we weren't informed. Our warrenty covered the exhaust problem, but landers said that the linkage wasn't covered even though they had worked on the linkage less than a year ago. They are supposed to cover any repairs they make for a year, but they didn't honor this. We spent 7 hours waiting for the Jeep to be repaired. They offered us a rental to get us home, but didn't offer any gas money or anything for our incovience about driving 150 miles (one way). I'm a gunsmith and make $30 a hour and I was away from my work for 20 hours because of landers not informing me of how long the repairs would take. Now I'm behind with my work and having to work16 hours a day to catch up. I would like some comp. For my time lost. Also my wife went with me to landers and sat through their lies, and she lost work time also. Landers is supposed to have a five star rating toward their customers. We were treated like unwanted step-children. Landers didn't offer to supply us with transport to go get something to eat, inform us of the problems with our Jeep, and charged us 69. 97 for labor and 24. 97 for parts, that shouldn't have worn out after 27,100 miles unless they damaged when they 'fixed' the linkages the first time. I know I'm not improtant to them, but I believe they destroyed the bushings the first time they worked on them, and broke the manifold bolt trying to tighten it down causing them to have to pull the head off the motor head off the engine to get to.

58 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/01/1999

Exhaust system broke twice. This could allow exhaust fumes to enter passenger's compartment. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

59 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/04/1999

On February 4, 2004 I took my 1999 Jeep Wrangler to bob mayberry Chrysler Dodge, Jeep, inc. It was very noisy and more gasoline than usual. They said that my exhaust manifold was broken and that this was a very common problem in these vehicles. Mileage at that time was 61,935. The warranty for that year was only 3 years 36 months I was told. This repair was nearly $700. 00 and is somethng that I have never had go wrong on any other car I ever had. This was something that the company has known about for some time now, and refused to recall the poorly designed and poorly constructed exhaust manifolds. I would like to see you force them to fix these problems and return all or part of my service bill. My VIN is 1j4fy9s7xp414936. When I called the daimler Chrysler customer service number, I was told that this was just too bad, but there was nothing that they were going to do about it.

60 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 11/25/1998

Noticed what sounded like an exhaust leak coming from the engine compartment. I brought it to the dealer with 27k miles on it. They heard nothing. In may 2000 my mechanic mentioned a crack in the exhaust manifold. I brought it back to dealer and they said they found nothing. Oct. Of 2001 with 58k the noise was unbearable and three cracks visable. Dealer said too bad out of warranty. If so many people are having this problem why can't something be done? by the way I will never purchase another Jeep again.

61 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

63 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 06/23/1998

The rear differential was cracked, as was the exhaust manifold. Also the crank sensor harness and the tps were melted against the manifold. The dash leaked water and the brake shoes/lining and rack and pinion set needed replacing. The drivers side seatbelt would never retract and the dash lead water extensively causing the resstr-blower to go out. The radio was also broken for a couple of months.

67 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Oil filter design is located in a very awkward place, exhaust pipe is just below filter and starter solenoid wires very close, resulting in damage to filter when wrench became intangled into starter solenoid wires. Mjs.

68 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1997 Jeep Wrangler

Vehicle was making noise from muffler. Took vehicle to dealership, and mechanic stated that exhaust manifold was cracked, causing exhaust leakage and needed to be replaced. Overtime, exhaust manifold cracked into three pieces causing hot exhaust fumes in engine compatments as well as drivers area.

69 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

A cracked exhaust header caused exhaust fumes to enter the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

70 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1998 Jeep Wrangler

The mannifold has cracked twice. The first time, Jeep fixed it, stating there was a "design flaw". Now, approx. Two years later, and another 32,000 miles(roughly) the same thing happened again. This time, they would not fix it, due to mileage. However, I feel as if there is a design flaw, and this happens every 30,000 miles or so, someone should be aware of the problem and attempt to correct it. I just had it fixed for the second time and the cost was $600. 00. Nlm.
