While hitting several trees in my kia Optima, going about 45mph, the air bags did not deploy. My insurance company said from their experience and from looking at the damage of the car, they also think the air bags should have deployed. However, nobody was seriously injured, no thanks to the air bags.

Wife was coming back from walking the dogs in the park, at the park she was feeling dizzy, when she sit down in the car she was feeling better. Has she was driving home, she past a school and seen the sign to slow down. After that she black out and she woke up after the accident, in a ditch on the other side of the street. She had hit a fence then head-on into a tree. The whole time all the air bags didn't deploy. The air bags not deploying is the reason for this complaint.

Driver side air bag light on and does not turn off. Called kia consumer affairs and they stated my vehicle is not covered by their current recall for this obvious on going problem with the air bags. My case number with kia is k2842625. This seems to be a real safety problem if the air bags do not deploy in an accident.

Driver on opposite side if road crossed center lane and crashed into the drivers side of my car, damaging the entire drivers side from the headlights to the taillights. It is within $1000 of being totaled, but the low mileage is what saved us by bringing the value up. The driver was going approximately 25-30mph when her car struck mine and she did not apply the brakes at all. She hit my car and the car behind me as well. My side airbags did not deploy during the impact, as I feel they should have. There were no other passengers in the car, and there have not been any issues with the air bag system that I am aware of.
While sitting at a traffic light, a vehicle rear-ended my 2010 kia Optima. The driver hit my kia so hard, I hit the mustang in front of me. No air bags deployed upon either impact. Kia was drivable, but there were noticeable differences in the way the car drove (I. E. Started pulling to the right, wheel shaking, etc). This was the evening of 01/23/2014. On 01/29/2014, the steering wheel locked up and collided with a parked vehicle (totaling the kia) @ 28-30 mph. Again air bags did not deploy, and the impact lifted me up and my head shattered the windshield from the top. Seat belt was in use, but did not lock upon impact, failing to secure my body. Major concussion received along with multiple bruises, cuts, and scrapes. Investigation unable to determine the cause of the steering malfunction due to the extent of the damage.

The contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. The contact stated that the driver crashed into another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of neck injuries. It was unknown if a police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to an impound lot. The vehicle was not diagnosed for the cause of the air bag failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure and current mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
While traveling at the posted speed limit of 55 mph a deer ran into the side of my 2008 kia Optima which is equiped with side air bags in which the drivers side door was pushed in on the driver and the drivers side widow was destroyed inflicting cuts on the driver and with the entire drivers side of the vehicle recieived extentsive damage including the hood of the vehicle. The side air bags never deployed to ensure the safety of the driver even with the severity of the impact of which kia national headquarters was contacted and the explination was that the vehicle was not moving sideways at impact and this is why the air bags did not deploy! this is not a valid excuse to me or I would think an consumer purchasing this vehicle with the assumption that they have side air bag protection!.
After clockspring recall/ and repair the cars air bag signal now come on with a code of b1378 in which kia has told me that there is s high resistance dsab. I have been informed that this code is for a bad or faulty airbag. The car has never been in an accident and the airbag has never been deployed.
I was sitting in a turn lane, to turn left. There were two lanes to my right for traffic. I was waiting for a car coming from the opposite direction. I happened to look in my rear view mirror and it was completely taken up by this red object, which happened to be a car. Immediately I felt a terrible shock and my car was lifted up in the rear and the front end pointed at the road. This car drove me approximately 40 yds. Up the road. The air bags did not deploy. . . None of them and there was $12,000 worth of damage done to my car. I still have lower back pain and severe cramps on the left side of neck and head. Of course the driver was dui, no license, no insurance and left the scene of the accident. On 10/22/12 my wife had driven home from florida to TN. She turned on a street heading up a hill toward our home. She was going approximately 25 miles per hour, when an older grey truck coming down the hill crowded her off the road. She swerved to her right and hit a 700 lb. Mailbox(cement & bricks) this accident tore the ride side front end back by 4 feet, also buckling the hood and popping rivets in the motor. The air bags again failed to deploy. There has to be something wrong with the 2011 kia Optima's air bags. She bloodied her nose and had a gash in her right wrist. There4 is absolutely no sense of having air bags when they don't do as they supposed to. This must be explored and the reason found! thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

I was stopped, 2nd in position, at a stop light. I was rear ended by a Nissan sentra doing approximately 50 tp 55 mph. My car was hit in the rear, pushing the front into a dually. The airbags did not deploy. I struck my head on the steering wheel. I was wondering why the airbags did not deploy. The front left bumper was severely damaged as the left rear bumper. In all, the car was a total loss.
I was traveling 55mph behind a vehicle who suddenly swerved out of the way into the right hand lane. There was a car stopped in the left hand lane, unable to stop in time I struck the black Jeep liberty in the rear bumper more toward the driver side with the the passenger front bumper of my car. ( kia Optima) my air bag did not deploy and I did strike my head, although I am not sure if I hit it on the windshield or on the glass top. My concern is my seatbelt did not engage properly allowing me to strike my head. And again that the airbags did not deploy.
The contact owns a 2008 kia Optima. The contact stated the air bag warning light illuminated only when someone was sitting in the passenger seat. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic who stated when the light was on it indicated that the air bag may not deploy in a crash or it may deploy without a crash occurring. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure mileage was 69,000 and the current mileage was 75,000. Updated 06/26/12 a diagnostic revealer the oc passenger sensor mat was defective. The problem was corrected. However, three days later when a passenger sat in the seat, the air bag light illuminated on the dashboard again. The consumer returned to the repair shop again. The mechanic stated it seemed that if someone sat in the passenger seat, did a lot of moving around, or was slightly heavy in weight, it triggered the air bag light. The consumer stated the light is currently on. Updated 06/27/12.
The driver owns a 2009 kia Optima. The contact stated that the driver was traveling approximately 30 mph when another vehicle crashed into her. The driver's vehicle crashed into a building as a result and the air bags did not deploy. The driver was taken to a hospital via ambulance to treat neck injuries. The vehicle was towed home. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was awaiting a response. The failure and current mileages were 38,076.
I purchased my 2004 kia Optima with 100k miles on it and after about 30 days the airbag light came on without being involved in any moving incident and remained on. I took it to the kia dealer (rosen, milwaukee, WI) and they believed it was the contacts because I got code b1378, airbag resistance to high. They sprayed something on the contacts because the couldn't find anything wrong with the air bag system. They reset the airbag light free of charge, but after driving about one week the light came back on. This is a major safety issue that kia needs to resolve because the air bags will not deploy if the car is involved in an accident.

I have a kia Optima 2007, I bought it brand new in 2007. The air bag light is on and they have not fixed it under warranty at all. Also the engine light has come on and they will not fix that as well. I have had to change the rotors on the car only a year into driving it. The air bags will not deploy in the event there is a crash which is a danger to me and my kids. I have tried to reason with kia and they want nothing to do with me at all.
The contact owns a 2008 kia Optima. The contact stated while driving 70 mph the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed and a fatality was reported. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was unknown. Updated 06/12/lj the consumer stated a recall came in the mail on April 12. 2012. Prior to the accident, there was a loud noise coming from under the hood. Updated 06/13/12.
The contact was driving a rented 2010 kia Optima. The consumer stated she stopped the vehicle while the gear was in drive, turned off the ignition and attempted to remove the key from the ignition, but it would not release. The gear shift had lock up and she was unable to move the gear into neutral or the park position. She stated the manual read to start car, the gear shift must be in the park position and the foot must be on the brake. The consumer stated as she slightly moved the key, the vehicle started with high speed and crashed head on into a building. The consumer was injured and the air bag failed to deploy the failure and current mileages were 1,750. Updated 12/01/10.
I own a kia 2008 Optima. Every 3-5 days the passenger airbag sensors do not detect a person sitting in the passenger seat. I can drive for miles and have the person adjust their position and it still doesn't register. It seems to occur with people between 120-160 pounds. They are all over 5'5". I have contacted kia corporate case #[xxx] . Because it happens every three to five days they won't do anything until the computer registers an error. The computer doesn't think anyone is there. It doesn't think there is an issue. They've basically told me when it happens to turn off the car and have the person get out of the car for 3 seconds and then try it again. This doesn't work well when you are picking hs kids up from school. You can't just stop your car in the middle of the street. I've done some research. It looks like kia has been aware of the problem since 2006. I believe it is a serious safety issue. If the system doesn't identify the person in the seat and there is a head on collision the airbag is not going to deploy. I have video and pictures of it recurring. Kia will don't accept it as evidence. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Purchased my kia Optima new in 07. . For the past 5 months the dashboard air bag sensor has been on. I called the dealership, they said there is nothing they can do for it and that more than likely its just the sensor and the air bags should deploy when they are suppose to. . I also was told that if the light is on that means the air bags are not going to deploy. So basically there is nothing anyone can do and who knows if it is going to work!.
The contact owns a 2004 kia Optima. The contact was traveling at speeds of 15 mph in rainy weather. The vehicle ahead of him stopped suddenly. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle and crashed into the rear of the preceding vehicle. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact was injured. A police report was filed. The contacts vehicle was destroyed. The failure and current mileages were 82,500.
We have a 2008 kia Optima, with 12,000 miles. . The passenger side airbag indicator light malfunctions. While people are seated, it comes on, indicating the air bag is off; which means, in case of accident it will not deploy. It has done this recently on three separate occasions with three different medium to large adults. We have taken this to the local kia service twice and have been told each time, "you are not sitting correctly. " they even supplied us with a "service bulletin" instructing employees how to respond when people report this concern. . . Instructing the consumer how to "sit correctly. " after, much conversation with the local kia dealership employees, everyone, the service manager, tech, and company manager agreed that we had a problem but they couldn't fix it. Their reason was kia would not recognize it as a problem and would not cover it under the warranty. As a matter of fact, the manager reported to me that the kia rep was not pleased that the employees had used the word "problem" when referring to my situation. This is a major safety concern and it leaves me with a car, that when the light comes on, I have to stop and move the passenger to the back seat, as the airbag would not deploy in case of an accident. Upon checking the internet, I have discovered pages of others reporting this same problem with the same inane instructions of "not being seated properly. " if the kia's sensor is that sensitive, it needs to be fixed. We feel this needs to be addressed and that kia needs to admit the problem and fix it!.
I was traveling at about 35-40 mph when I noticed the person in front of me stop. I hit the brakes and could not stop in time and collided with the rear of this persons car. It smashed in my front bumper, fender, bent the hood about two feet in the air, and my airbags did not deploy. I drive a kia Optima 2005. I think this crash definitely warranted a airbag deployment.

Passenger air bag light comes on and reads, air bag off and stays o with an adult passenger in front seat. This is an intermittent problem which has been in different dealerships a number of times (ten) and has never been resolved. Kia said that they are not interested in making repairs because of the age and mileage on the vehicle. The light was on at one time when at the dealership and a diagnosis was performed. I was told that there was no problem found. The problem with this statement is that if the light is on and there a person in the seat, and an accident was to take place, the air bag would not deploy. I feel that this a real safety problem, one that should be address by kia and repaired or replace the vehicle because of the danger to the passenger in the front seat. I know I could just trade the vehicle in to get rid of my problem, but that will not solve the problem with the vehicle and the next owner will have the same safety issue. This condition can happen at any speed both or residential and expressways, it stays on until I turn the ignition off and stop the car. How do I know, if this system is ever working properly? . . Updated 04-16-14.
The contact owns a 2006 kia Optima. On August 3, 2008, the contact was involved in a three vehicle crash. Her vehicle crashed into the preceding vehicle and the air bag failed to deploy. On two occasions, the contact took the vehicle to the dealer because the air bag light kept illuminating. During the first repair, the dealer replaced a wire shortage. During the second repair, the wiring harness was replaced. The vehicle is currently at the tow yard. The manufacturer will be notified. The contact was injured. The speed was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 46,000.
Purchased a 2004 kia Optima in 11/2005 and have reported air bag light coming on every couple of months. Car repair has been attempted 4 times since date of purchase and reported 5 times as of 04/11/2008. I am afraid that the airbag may or may not deploy when needed, or it will deploy while driving.
I was involved in an accident on 3/11/08. A woman caused me to rear end her going about 40-45mph. My car was basically totaled. I had my 2 month old twins in the car and my 3yr old son. Luckily we were all buckled in. I didn't sustain any serious injuries. I have few pains but due to work I have not seen a doctor as of yet. My children are to young to communicate if and when they are having pain related to the accident, but physically they look fine. The airbags in the vehicle did not deploy at all. I feel that if we were not buckled in and would have relied soley on the airbag system we could have incurred serious bodily injuries. My concern is the airbags not deploying.
The contact owns a 2007 kia Optima. While driving 30 mph, the anti-lock brakes failed. The contact veered off the road, drove into the embankment, and struck a tree. The rear end of the vehicle spun around and a tree crashed through the windshield. The vehicle flipped over and landed upright. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was presumed to be completely destroyed. Kia stated that they would send out a representative to determine why the air bags and antilock brakes failed. The wife sustained bruises and all the occupants were wearing their seat belts properly. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 11,000. Updated 02-12-08 bf * the consumer stated does not feel fairly compensated for the loss of the vehicle due to the defect. Updated 02/12/08.
Purchased 2005 kia Optima in 7/06. Air bag light came on in sept 06. Dealer notified and fixed. Air bag light came on again a short time later and sent to dealer again, 1-4-07, fixed. Air bag light came on again sent to dealer on 8-7-07, fixed. Air bag light came on again sent to dealer 3-25-08 and fixed. Air bag light came on again in 6/08 and light remains on at this time. Air bag is not working at this time. We had an accident with the vehicle on 7/07. It was a front end collision and air bags did not deploy.
I purchased a low mileage kia Optima two years ago. Shortly after purchasing this car the airbag light deployed. I took it to my local dealer service dept @ gwinnett place kia in duuth GA who at no charge made the light go off. Driving out of the dealership the light came back on and they again corrected whatever it was that was making the light appear, assuring me just because the airbag light is on it will deploy and it is fine. Two more time in the next few months for no reason again the light would appear and again I returned to the dealership. The last time 9 months agto when they installed a new airbag as they advise they did not know what was causing the light to come on agaim reassuring me just because the light was on the airbag would still deploy. I was frustrated at that point and although the light was on a few days later again, I felt assured I was in no danger and planned to trade in the car in the near future. Now it is the same problem and when I took my car to a mechanic whom I trust and who is a teacher of auto mechanics at a local college, he informed me today they gave me the run around, assuring me this is regulated by the federal govenment and I am not safe; as long as the airbag light is on my airbag will not deploy at the time of an accident. I am now fearful kia hasl argued with me that despite the records of the mumerous times I have sought help from them for the same problem, the car is now over the 50k warranty and it is not their responsibility. They want to charge me $50. 00 to just look at it and from there will charge me like anyone else. This is outrageous. I'm a single mom with kids and need to be safe. I will never purchase another kia products again and am considering hiring an attorney to intervene for me to resolve this. They never "fixed" the problem to begin with and now want me to pay?.
