Tl - the contact owns a 2002 kia Sportage. While driving between 45-50 mph she heard a loud sound and the vehicle was shaking, running hot and steam and smoke was coming out from under the hood. The vehicle was towed. The diagnosis was that the clutch fan fragmented and broke and went into the radiator. The radiator had to be repaired, the timing belt had to be replaced, the head gasket had to be replaced, and the head resurfaced. Ny kia Sportage 2002 4d4x4 cooling fan blew apart taking out the radiator and other parts. It is a defective part found recall on the internet. Called kia 18003334542 argued with them for a week they finally agreed to fix the damage. It was to be done Monday that's when they ordered the parts. They will not provide a loaner car as mine is out of warranty.

The contact owns a 2002 kia Sportage. While driving 65 mph, the contact heard a loud bang and then the vehicle decelerated and shut off. He noticed white smoke coming from the rear. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the cooling fan disintegrated. Nhtsa recall number 07v161000 (engine and engine cooling:cooling system:fan) was found. The dealer stated that they would replace the fan. The contact felt that the damaged radiator caused by the defective fan should be repaired. The failure and current mileages were 31,000.

The contact owns a 2000 kia Sportage. While driving 35 mph, two of his fan blades fell off the vehicle. The contact bought new parts to perform the repair himself. 6 Cooling Fan problem of the 2001 Kia Motor Sportage

The polypropylene cooling fan blade broke off while I was traveling at 60 mph on the freeway, puncturing the radiator, breaking the cowling, and puncturing a hose. The results being the Sportage was towed to the repair shop and the repairs are costing $500 - $600. The Sportage is still in the shop being fixed as I am writing this. The repair shop will save the old parts for me. I contacted kia customer service and they researched my VIN number, which is outside the window for the present recall (07v161000). The same problem that is occurring with the 2002 models is also happening with the earlier models. I am sure I am not the only one who has had to have these repairs made.

The kia dealer is not accepting any new appointments until October of 2007 for the recall repair. The contact has not experienced any failures at this time. The current mileage is 50,000 and the failure mileage was inapplicable.

Traveled approximately 50 miles from home, 96 degrees outside, and heard loud noise. Pulled to side of road and turned vehicle of. -picked up pieces of what turned out to be fan blade from middle of highway. After looking inside the hood discovered large holes in radiator-subsequently towed vehicles for repair of fan, blades,clutch assembly and radiator-vehicle still not operable. Received recall notice from kia 2 weeks later. Vehicle then towed to dealer, where it has been determined that the head assembly became warped due to the radiator being damaged by the faulty fan. Kia motors claimed case wa s closed, no resolution received. Vehicle remained inoperable at this time.

I was driving my 2002 kia Sportage. I heard a loud boom as it shifted into second gear. I pulled over and looked under the hood. The fan blade was in 5 pieces. The pieces had gone into the radiator and broke the fan shroud. Steam was coming out of the holes in the radiator.

In January, 2007, my 2001 kia Sportage was making a loud, straining engine sound. Took the car to be repaired and was told I need a cooling fan blade assembly. My car was out of warranty so I didn't take it to the dealer. I had less than 60,000 miles on the car. I have since found out there is a recall this part. I plan to seek reimbursement from kia.

2002 kia Sportage 35k mi. Noticed different engine sound, found that large cracks had formed between each fan blade, main blade driven by engine. Checked internet found that others had similar problems including breaking and radiator destruction. Plan to get fan from deal and install also ask about kia parts bulletin 1500-0002 which concerns this fan blade.

When checking oil level on August 13,2006, I noticed cracks between each blade on the engine cooling fan. Upon further inspection the cracks were found to go from front to back on 6 blades. I removed the fan, took it to the dealership, and asked if there was a bulletin. I was told no. Bought new fan and installed myself.

: the contact stated while accelerating through the intersection from a stop sign at 5 mph, a loud thud was heard and the vehicle jerked forward. The vehicle was driven home the remaining two miles with the hazard lights illuminated. Upon inspection of the engine, the fan blades were scattered across the engine compartment, and some were caught in the wiring. The vehicle was towed to a service dealer where the fan was replaced and the damaged wiring to the air conditioning was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified.

The driver was traveling from boston on the massachusetts turnpike toward new york state. As she approached the new york state toll booths, brakes, steering, and acceleration suddenly failed and the vehicle, a 2001 kia Sportage with 66,018 miles began smoking. The driver managed to turn slightly to avoid crashing into the toll booths and found herself headed for a large propane tank on the grounds. She pulled the emergency brake and managed to stop within a few feet of the tank. Believing the car to be on fire, she exited quickly. The car was towed to lia kia in schenectady, new york. The allstate insurance investigator and the mechanic agreed that the fan clutch had broken off and moved throughout the area under the hood, causing extensive damage. The allstate investigator has pictures of the fan clutch and damage. Insurance did not pay because the problem was a defective part. The estimated repair was $4500. 00. The vehicle remained at lia kia while the national kia headquarters was contacted. Mr. Ryan christianson was the contact there. He maintained that the vehicle was out of warranty, so kia had no responsibility. He suggested that the vehicle may not have been maintained properly and wanted all past records sent to him, until he was informed that there were pictures at allstate. Verbal and written communication are available. The fact that there was very nearly a catastrophic accident which would have involved many vehicles and individuals was pointed out to him. The vehicle remained at lia kia until may, when they began to demand rent. With no apparent remaining options, the vehicle was repaired at a cost of $4595. 99 and driven home on may 19, 2006. There was some difficulty driving home and the vehicle was taken to legacy kia in e. Syracuse, new york, the original purchase site, where the thermostat was repaired at a further cost of $306. 13. The consumer stated she incurred an expense to remedy the defective engine cooling fan prior to receiving the recall notice. The consumer stated she mailed the repair receipt along with a cover letter explaining what happened. The consumer stated she was driving when the fan broke and had to stop at the first repair shop to have the repair done.

Kia has had a large number of fan failures that cause loss of engine in heavy traffic. The fan totally came apart and did a lot of dammage to the engine on the turnpike in bumper to bumper traffic at the speed limit and there was no place to pull off for safety. Kia is aware of this problem and has been keeping it quiet to the public. The small dealership near me has had 5 cases alone so far this year.

Engine light/fan relay ar shook upon being turned on two separate occassions prior to enging light coming on. Car taken in for repairs scan showed random cylinder misfire #301 & #1. Found water and corrosion on plugs and wire arcing. Inginition wires and spark plugs replaced. Car returned a day and half after taken in for service although I had been told that it would not be available to me for another 2 days whereas I complained and after a moment of being put on hold was told car was repaired and I could come pick it up. After I picked up car noticed heat in car was not operating although operational when car taken in for service. Returned car to dealer to repair heating system. Dealer found fan relay burnt. Left car at dealer entire day, problem not repaired. Picked up vehicle w/o repair being done. Then noted all power windows not operational. Called dealer and corporate headquaters to complain of issues and need for proper working vehicle. Since then repeated calls to dealer have not provided positive results. Dealer has repeatedly stated that part was scheduled to arrive when in fact wrong part was repeatedly being ordered incorrectly as stated by corporate house. Corporate house implored upon dealer to locate loaner vehicle until issue resolved. No loaner vehicle has been received by me as of yet. Car still has no heat or operational windows. Purchasing a portable car heater due to the fact that it is winter and the temperture has fallen dramaticallyand is going to drop even further. Not having operational window inconveniece since I must pay a toll everyday and must open my door in order to pay toll operator.

Auto surges and accelerates while traveling highway speeds. Have had several close calls / near accidents. Dealer "cannot duplicate" and therefore will not do anything. Manufacturer has been contacted and said there is nothing they can do "nothing to fix - if dealer can not duplicate". Have brought in to dealer 2 times. What happens when this causes an accident/injury/ or worse? how can they duplicate it then? please note have had other failures-cooling fan fell off and ruptured radiator, 4 wheel drive has failed several times.
