Noticed a knocking noise coming from my engine while idoling when trying to accelerate it seemed as though my car was losing power and the knocking noise was getting louderand faster. While breaking my engine would knock and my car would slightly jerk. I haven't drove my car in 4 days because it was acting this way on back roads, no way I'd trust it on a highway. Vehicle only has 90,000 miles.

While traveling in id heading home to ut (in motion) on an interstate interchange at hwy us-20 w to I-15 s, my 2012 kia Sportage with only 36,000 miles, experienced engine power loss, the engine seized with no warning indicators. I was eventually able to bring the vehicle to a stop on the side of the road, but it was difficult because there were no brakes. After waiting several minutes and calming down, I tried the ignition and it started up again and since there were no warning indicators and I'd never experienced this particular problem before, I decided to push on keeping to the right side of traffic and going as slow as possible. After a few minutes of driving slowly, the car started making a knocking sound so I exited immediately at the nearest pocatello exit, to find a kia dealership. Now the car was making an awful squealing noise along with the knocking. I was able to putter to the pocatello kia dealer and had to leave the car so they could run a diagnostic test the following Monday. I then had to find a ride back to salt lake. The result was "rod failure" according to the test and they recommended that I buy a motor for approx $7000 and did not disclose they could start a service ticket with the test result, so one week later a friend helped me trailer the kia back to salt lake, we left it at our family mechanic's shop whom we've used for other cars and started the search for a less expensive engine. Had a jegs engine shipped but jegs sent the wrong engine and now say there are no engines that will work for my kia. One month later I still have no car, no engine and am racking up rental car charges and it looks like my only option is to buy another car. Feeling a little violated because I took great care of that kia. I can provide documentation upon request, if you feel it would be helpful, please let me know.

Was driving my car and got a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. There was no warning lights or anything that would make me think anything was wrong till the knocking noise. I brought the car to the dealer and was told I needed a new engine. I had all the regular service done at that dealer. They have had my car for a month now and I still haven't got it back yet. Paying for a rental out of pocket.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving approximately 30 mph, the oil pressure and temperature gauge indicators illuminated, and the vehicle made a knocking sound. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and had it towed to her residence. The contact called dick hannah kia (3400 ne auto mall dr, vancouver, wa 98662) and was informed that the vehicle exceeded the mileage to be repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 19v101000 (engine). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.
Engine started making knocking sound while on the highway going to houston TX and the engine stall on road. Very busy road. Fortunately coasted to side of road and no other vehicles behind. After contact Kia Motors they sent wrecker service. But did not tow to nearest dealership but garage in nearest town. Mechanic had no idea why vehicle was sent to him. I had to make arrangements to tow car to my dealership. At dealership now they say engine is part of recall but I never recieved any notice to take our vehicle in. Now over a month later still no car and no answer as to when my car will be ready. And paying for rental. I guess they have to wait for fatally to do something about this issue.

While driving down interstate the vehicle started making a awful knocking noise. Then the dash lit up with oil pressure light check engine light. I slowed down and pulled to side of interstate with my children in the car. I had to call someone to come get us.
While getting off the highway the car started making a rattling, knocking sound, it was a scary sound so I drove it to firestone to see what was wrong. Apparently I need a new engine on a car that has 81k miles. The vehicle has had routine maintenance since purchased. Some 2013 Sportages with the same issue and same motor have been recalled mine has not. Time to see if kia stands behind the product.
I had been hearing a strange noise when pushing the brakes since August 2018, I had a lay person look at it who stated it was the wheel bearings and should be replaced. I took it to kia as I was still under warranty for 20 more miles and they said it wasn't the bearings and they could find no problems at all with the car. On Feb. 20, 2019, 6 months later, I was driving with my son on the highway and started to hear a loud knocking noise at the base of the windshield under the hood and the speedometer started to falter. I tried accelerating and the knocking increased and all the lights on the dash went on and the speedometer began falling. I hurried to get over and off the highway as the smoke and burning smell was engulfing the front of the car. It completely died as I rolled to a stop with smoke pouring from under the hood. I towed it to kia who said they would do a diagnostic for $145. The tow driver gave me a lemon sized chunk of metal stating it looked like a piece of the oil pan as the flatbed was covered in oil. I had to call kia the next day to get a diagnosis. They said they didn't do one because just from looking at the hole in the oil pan, they could tell it had blown an engine rod. I was informed that even though this was a recall event because my VIN was not recalled they would do nothing for me.
Ive been losing oil due to a leak from oil pan, noticed as of 2/1/20 my 2011 Sportage has been making a knocking sound as well as loss of fuel economy and inconsistent idle sounds. Contacted kia with these symptoms in response to a recall 19v101000 that was issued on 2/15/2019 and asked if that was the possible issue. They told me my VIN didn't match the recall requirements and said id have to pay for any engine failure repair and that my recall work was up to date. However I do have all my recall repair paperwork and theres nothing in there regarding that kind of recall.

While driving the vehicle, the motor started to stall at highway speeds and making loud knocking noises. Once the vehicle was pulled over to the shoulder of the road the vehicle died and would not start. There was no sign of over heating or any other damage. No warning lights appeared until right before the motor died and only then the check engine light appeared. We had the vehicle towed to a local service shop and the technician and mechanic informed us that the motor would need to be replaced. He informed us that the same motor family was under recall from kia but only the gdi model not the mpi model, which this vehicle is. They also informed us that the diagnosis and issues are in both motors from the theta ii motor family in their experience. The vehicle currently has around 114,000 miles and has always been maintained and kept under recommended maintenance schedule.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving approximately 70 mph, a knocking sound was present coming from the engine and the vehicle began to lose power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to kia of auburn (1687 s. College st, auburn, al) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 106,000.
The engine has a loud knocking sound. I turned on my vehicle and when I pressed on the gas I heard a loud knocking sound. I have always been diligent about getting my regular oil changes and services for and have service records for it so thought this was odd. I took it to the kia dealer and was advised it needed a new engine and would cost about $7200, a lot more than what the vehicle is worth. The service department advisor checked the VIN on my kia because he said kia Sportages had a recall for this same problem, but found out my kia was not part of that recall. After further research, I have found many kia Sportage owners are facing the same issue with the same engine that kia recalled on some kia Sportages, but not on others. Kia needs to take responsibility for all kia Sportages that were sold defective not just some of them.
I was driving on a straight, open 4 lane, divided highway with no problems. All of a sudden the engine started making a knocking noise. The knocking sound got louder so I pulled off the highway and into a gas station parking lot. When I tried to restart it, the engine did not sound like it was running properly. In doing research after having the vehicle towed to my house, I read about kia Sportage 2013 recalls for bearings causing engine failure. Checking my VIN showed that there were no recalls on my vehicle but I think it might be possible that my engine was one of those affected by the recall mentioned above.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the bearings in the motor needed to be replaced. The mechanic also stated that NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) pertained to the failure, but the VIN was excluded. The vehicle was taken to bob king kia (1725 link rd, winston-salem, nc 27103) where it was diagnosed that the motor bearings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
My kia Sportage engine light came on and the engine started making a knocking noise while driving down road on a Saturday night . (dealerahip was closed) first thing Monday morning called kia dealer. Took into dealer . After they checked it out they informed my engine was ruined . Had metal shavings in it . And because I didnt take it into them or a professional to change the oil(I had family do it) my warrenty no longer will cover it. Fought this for weeks with consumer affairs. . And got nowhere . Did some research and the exact same thing was recalled in the 2015 kia Sportage . . Just seems ironic the same thing happend to my 2017 Sportage.

Tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Sportage. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle sputtered and stalled. The contact restarted the vehicle and noticed a knocking sound in the engine. The vehicle was taken to tyler kia (located at 1810 s 11th st, niles, mi 49120, (269) 683-1710) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
~tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Sportage. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a knocking sound within the engine compartment. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling), but the VIN was not included. The contact stated that the repair would be covered under warranty and that the dealer agreed to replace the short block within the engine. The contact stated that the dealer wanted to replace the engine with a rebuilt engine instead of a brand new one. The contact was concerned that the same engine block would be added to the rebuilt engine using the same contaminated oil that caused the previous engine failure. The contact was referred to the state attorney general's office. The contact was also referred to the kia manufacturer at 800-333-4542 to discuss the nature of the recall repair in its entirety. The failure mileage was 68,000.
At 100,000 miles, a knocking sound could be heard. The service department at the dealership indicated that the engine was faulty. I understand that there was a recall of the 2012 kia Sportage but my VIN number does not indicate that my vehicle was affected by this recall. Can you explain why my vehicle which is affected by the same engine failure is not covered?.
I was driving my car to work one morning and I heard a weird faint knocking sound coming from outside my car. I immediately drove straight to royal kia in tucson where I had purchased the car 4 years ago as a "certified" used car. At 3p that afternoon they called to tell me that it needs a new engine. It has 78000 miles on it. They claim my warrenty was "defaulted" on because over the past 4 years I was late getting the oil changed twice. I called corp kia and they basically said too bad and insinuated that because the late maintenance on the vehicle caused the engine to fail. I also spoke with tge gm of royal kia and he insisted the same thing. I have spoken to a number of mechanics and they said no way can that cause an engine to go with the low mileage. I have also had every service done on the car for 4 years. The only issue was the two late oil changes. I brought the recall up to the dealer and he said that it wasn't this engine. I say someone needs to investigate this further. They told me it would cost $7000 to replace the engine and that it really wasn't "worth it". There seem to be a lot of engine complaints on this website. Maybe another class action suit should be pursued.
2012 Sportage lx with 75,560 miles on vehicle. I am not the primary owner but a secondary owner so kia says the 100,000 mile power train warranty does not apply to me. The engine began making a knocking sound on Sunday so I had it towed to round rock kia (n austin texas). Kia determined the cause of failure is a bad/worn connecting rod bearing which is the identical cause of failure as "recall 17v224000" | "kia's recall number "sc147". The recall impacts 2012 Sportage failing in identical ways but because my VIN is supposedly outside the recall pool they are saying it's not covered and wanting me to pay 4,200 for a new engine block. The details of the recall even mention the engine rod "during machining of the engine crankshaft and crankpins, metal shavings may have been left within the crankshaft oil passages, and the crankpins themselves may be too rough on the edges. As a result, oil may be blocked and cause the connecting rod bearings to wear, which would then cause them to fail and seize the whole engine. ".
While driving down a city road at approx. 45 mph, car suddenly began sputtering and making a loud knocking noise in the engine and seems to be losing power and feels very unsafe to drive. Engine light comes on and goes off and comes back on.
My 2012 kia Sportage lx 2. 4l (109,000 miles) started making a knocking noise while driving earlier this week. I took it in for my local mechanic to examine it. They said the noise is coming from inside the engine, and it is a sign of internal engine failure. I started searching online and found all the information about the engine recall of various kia's, but my trim is not included in the safety recall. My car is showing the same signs, and yet I cannot get it fixed. The cost of the new/used engine would be more than the total worth of the car.
Our kia 2012 Sportage began to suddenly make knocking noise while driving on the high way . Reviewing information I expect the worst . New motor!!!!.
Vehicle experienced loss of power while accelerating on the highway and making a dangerous left turn across two lanes of traffic. A knocking noise coming from the engine persisted after this loss of power. The vehicle was immediately taken to the closest kia dealership the following day and diagnosed as having engine bearing failure. Kia currently has a recall (SC-147) for engines demonstrating this type of failure, but we were told that the recall did not extend to the engine in our 2013 kia Sportage. The vehicle currently has 109,856 miles on the engine and was in overall good shape and mechanically sound.
Engine has 94000 miles, and started making an awful knocking sound. Pulled into service station and was told engine full of metal shavings and the engine needs replaced. Kia customer service says this kia not covered by the recent engine recall, and my responsibility to cover it, even though it seems to be the same issue as those covered? engine always maintained like it should be and no previous issues until this. All of a sudden without any warning the engine starts chewing itself apart. Luckily there was somewhere close to stop before it seized up on the highway.
Vehicle began to suddenly make knocking noises while driving on the highway. Driver was able to make it short distance home before engine completely seized. Towed to kia dealership who confirmed the engine had seized (pistons became completely stuck and unable to move). Service manager said only fix is to replace the motor,.
Our kia 2012 Sportage engine failed while we were driving on interstate 95 on March 10 2018. We had never had an engine warning light come on ever until the engine seized going 65 mph. Heard a knocking sound come form the engine. Car seized without warning on the highway - had to coast to the shoulder. My VIN does not show up in the recall but has the exact same issue. Car currently at mechanic. The engine failure is the exact description of all the other engine failures. ***** called kia and they said that our VIN did not match their recall. And too bad for us. **** we have been in a quandry about how to deal with this. We spoke to our Hyundai service advisor (we have owned a Hyundai for 10 years with no problems) and he said that we should definitely pursue this further with kia. Do you have any advice on who to deal with on this? we have no idea where to start. I do appreciate your time and any advice you might have.
Driving at 50 mph down highway, hear a knocking sound come form the engine. Car seized without warning on the highway - had to coast to the shoulder. My VIN does not show up in the recall but has the exact same issue. Car currently at mechanic.
2013 kia Sportage bought used off the showroom floor with only 5024 miles at 1 year old in October of 2014. When bought used, there is a 5yr/60,000 mile warranty(as opposed to the 10/100 when bought new). This 5/60 warranty begins at the time of purchase of the original owner which happened to be 11/6/2012. On 12/28/17 while traveling out of state, I was about 200 miles into a 220 mile trip when the engine seized with only 56,000 miles. While traveling a main route at roughly 50 mph in moderate traffic, the vehicle lost all motor power, slowed & came to a crawl (in traffic). I was fortunate enough to not be rearended as I safely pulled over & coasted into a parking lot. There were knocking sounds coming from my motor and the vehicle would barely move while given ample gas. I called kia roadside assistance who informed me that they would not be sending a free tow truck as my warranty expired 52 days prior, but for $80+ they'd send a tow truck right away. (I have never used kia roadside assistance prior to this call - thanks kia) I turned that offer down stating I had aaa. Aaa towed the kia to the nearest dealership only 4 miles away, kia of sussex in NJ. The following day, the hesitant svc mgr "confirmed" that the motor was seized-he did not pop the hood, only turned the key. They were reluctant to repair because we weren't from NJ. So we paid out of pocket to have it towed home to cny. We've submitted a claim to Kia Motors America twice & they've denied our claim twice despite providing all of the oil change receipts that were done more than the manual suggested. Also, despite the fact that in March of 2017 a recall notice was submitted regarding this exact issue but when we called the dealer, they only stated it didn't apply to our VIN. Because it is 52 days out of warranty (with only 56k mi) they refuse to cover it. This is a lemon- we feel they're responsible.
As I pulled out of my driveway and began accelerating, my car began making a loud knocking noise in the front end. After pulling over and verifying the noise was coming from the motor, I took the car to my mechanic. He pulled the oil filter and cut it open. Confirming there were metal shavings in the oil filter. After calling our local kia dealership, they confirmed there was a recall for the 2012 kia Sportages, but continued to tell me my VIN was not included in said recall. (I purchase my car used, after a one year lease, so the warranty was void for me. ) I am confused as to why my issue was "verified" to be the same issue as the recall, but my engine (2. 4 l vs. 2. 0 l) was not included?!?!?! something is not right. Now I am stuck with money remaining on my loan and a very large paperweight. (approximate mileage at the time of issue 79,000).
Vehicle is equipped with 2. 4l mpi engine, 140,000 kilometers, meticulously maintained with regular oil changes with premium synthetic oil and filters, spark plug change, etc. Engine always made some light knocking sound but assumed it was the injectors, no lights or errors ever came on and service techs never said anything and forums mentioned noisy injectors so assumed it was normal. A few days ago I was on my home ascending a regular hill in the residential area when an unusually loud knocking noise began and engine began to struggle. It was late at night, and 5 minutes away from home so I was hoping I could at least make it home to bed and get it towed to the shop in the morning but as I approached the top of the hill the engine completely shut down causing abrupt deceleration and the vehicle began to roll back down in reverse quite rapidly and was very difficult to slow it to a safe stop since the brakes stiffen up without vacuum from the running engine on top of being startled from the event and slightly panicking from the surprise. Luckily enough it was at night and there was no traffic or pedestrians behind or near me but still was frightening enough. I was able to barely control the speed of the car down the hill in reverse with no power steering and brakes stiffened up and the emergency brake was not strong enough at that incline. I was able to move the car off the main street to a side street and attempted to start the vehicle several times hoping it was either a fuel problem or electrical. With no avail, I called tow company, waited for an hour in the cold at midnight, nothing worked, just clicking, towed it to the dealership and took a cab home. Got news from dealer that engine was infact seized and quote to replace engine is $8500 plus labor.
Just before reaching tryon, nc, coming from charleston, SC, we began to hear a distinct knocking noise coming from under the hood, and were unable to accelerate any further than around 55 mph. Eventually the engine failed and we were able to just pull off to the side of the road just yards from where the shoulder ended, and we almost hit a stationary vehicle just in front of us on the shoulder. We were trying to evacuate from the hurricane with my 7 month old granddaughter. . After the engine had cooled, we checked and made sure that my oil was over half full, and it was. A rental place stayed open a few extra hours for us, and we managed to get to our destination three hours away from the incident, because we were in desperate need of somewhere that allowed dogs. On Monday, we found out from the mechanic the car had eventually been towed to that the engine was shot. The mechanic let us know that this was an extremely common issue with our make and model, and that we should have had a recall issued for safety measures. While in assembly there was a manufacturing error which would not be noticed unless the driver was going long distance on the highway. There were tiny metal shavings within the engine that blocked the oil from properly circulating through the rod bearings to critical parts of the engine. We contacted corporate, and they told us our car was not listed under the warranty because it was assembled in a different location than the ones recalled. They then told us I had a 60,000 mile warranty instead of a 100,000 mile, which was a flat out lie. We contacted our dealer and they confirmed we had a 100k. Now after collecting all of our service records, the dealership is trying to tell us they will not cover the 7,000 dollar cost because my oil was low, which is another flat out lie. I don't want to make any money off them, I just want my repairs covered.
The contact owns a 2012 kia Sportage. While driving approximately 45 mph, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the front of the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact pulled over, turned off and restarted the vehicle, and a loud banging noise was heard. In addition, smoke appeared from the front and rear of the vehicle. A local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000. The VIN was not available.
While driving the car, a knocking sound started and the sound seemed to be coming from the engine. As we started to accelerate and gradually climb in elevation (on our way to a camping trip in colorado) we noticed a burning smell. We pulled over and checked the oil and it was at normal levels. Turned around and headed back home (north of denver). Knocking sound got worse. Stopped the car for about 45 minutes and got something to eat. Started the car again and about a half mile down the road the check engine light came on and the knocking sound was louder. Made it home. Took the car into a kia dealership (about 8 miles from home) the next morning 7/22/2017. We learned that our VIN # was not part of the current kia recall (sc147). Our vehicle is currently still parked in the kia dealership lot awaiting next steps.
