Car began making a rattling noise in the engine then immediately stopped running while I was driving. Luckily I was on a county road and coasted in to a driveway. I had the car towed to my house where it still resides and fearing it is a rod bearing failure in the motor.

2012 kia Sportage with dohc engine. Wife was on a business highway when all the sudden the made a rattle sound from under the hood then the motor started making a loud knocking sound then it started loose power. There was a recall on 2012 kia Sportage with a different engine recall 17v224000 a maching error in the bearings which will cause engine seize and possible crash. Only 109426 miles on it. Sounds like possibly the same issue as other engine had.

While driving vehicle began to rattle in engine compartment, lose speed and the check engine light came on. My daughter pulled the vehicle into the median and stopped the vehicle. Upon arriving at the vehicle, I cranked the car to see what was happening, vehicle is making a rattling sound, no warning lights other than check engine light came on, water temperature is good. Vehicle gave no indication that motor failure was imminent during previous day's driving. I drove the vehicle over to the side of the road and called for a tow truck. Vehicle was taken to local auto repair shop; where their diagnosis determined that the engine needs to be replace. Vehicle has just over 108,000 miles, oil changes performed regularly. Investigated recalls of Kia Motors, engine has recall from manufacturer and NHTSA. Manufacturer's recall number: sc174; NHTSA: 19v101.
As I was traveling from my home town to the airport in alt, my car began to lose speed. I didn't have enough speed to get to the next exit. Therefore I stopped on the side of the a very busy highway an called for a tow. I was towed to a service center where they replaced my transmission. At the end of my vacation, I picked up vehicle and drove back home. 3 weeks later, my engine failed while I was driving to work. Check engine light came on and it was making a loud whining sound. I took it to 2 different shops and was told the engine needs replacing. Tonight, I called kia and was told to take vehicle to kia for diagnosis. This vehicle is among the make model and year of those recalled for engine failure but my VIN is not specifically listed at this time. What do I do?.
My wife and I were returning from a trip; traveling at highway speeds. The engine made a weird mechanical noise and after about 10-15 seconds, knocking and rattling noises were coming from the engine. I looked at the dashboard and all my light indicators were turned on. The car stalled out as I was driving. I pulled the car over on the emergency shoulder and turned the engine off. The car never started up again.
Engine failure while driving on the highway at 60 mph. The engine started making rattling noise and all of the lights flashed and the engine died. After moving to the side of the road the engine would not restart. It was towed to a dealer who said the engine had to be replaced. This car has had oil changes every 3000 miles and only has 83000 miles on it. The dealer will replace the engine with a used engine with 68000 miles for $6300. I am concerned that the replacement engine will have the same problem. There was a recall on similar engines but this one was not included. The symptoms seem to be the same as the recall.
While driving on the highway the front end began to make a loud rattling noise. The vehicle was stopped and towed to a mechanic who informed me that the engine would need to be replaced. This issue is the same one as described in the recall sc147, however, my VIN has not been included in the recall. This recall should be expanded. The vehicle was maintained regularly and all maintenance suggested was always promptly performed. This $7,000 should be the responsibility of kia.
2012 kia Sportage (approx 55k miles, VIN not covered by the recall - manufacturer warranty expired in January). Driving across country for thanksgiving. We left tucson, az last Thursday night (11/16). Friday afternoon we started hearing a rattling sound coming from the engine. As I accelerated, the rattling became faster and worse. About 1 to 2 miles later, the cars just stopped running. We were stranded 50 miles west of odessa TX for about 2 hours. $400 tow truck ride to the kia dealership in odessa. We got there about 30 minutes before they closed and were told the car likely would need a engine replacement, but they couldn't check it out until Monday. We decided to rent a car and forge ahead to north carolina leaving our Sportage in texas. I called on Monday, and was the told the engine would need to be replaced. I asked about the oil, and was told the oil was "full and clean". They were going to try to find a reasonably priced used engine for us. After learning of the engine recall, I called kia on Tuesday morning (800-333-4kia) and was told our car wasn't affected by the recall, but if the car was diagnosed at the dealership a "tech-line" would be generated and kia could look at the case and possibly help out on a case-by-case basis. I called the dealership back and they told me they don't start a "tech-line" if the car is no longer covered by warranty, but they would check with his regional manager and get back to me. I haven't heard from them today. Anyway. . . Sorry for the novel. Based on other stories, and news articles I've read, I believe this engine has the same kind of defects the others have had. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the bushings needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 15,000. . . . Updated 02-28-14 the consumer stated at 10,000 miles the rubber bushings which held the exhaust on the body of the vehicle had worn out. The bushings became so flexible that the exhaust would constantly hit the frame. 4 out of 5 of the bushings were replaced. 5,000 miles later the failure reccured. Updated 03/19/2014.
