1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 09/17/2020

While driving on the I-10 freeway in phoenix, my engine seized up. All instrument lights came on and the vehicle died while driving approx 65mph. Luckily I was able to get to the shoulder without incident. I had to wait over an hour in 106 degree heat with a highway patrol officer until the tow truck could arrive. The kia dealership confirmed that the engine died. This exact problem was addressed with kia in 2017 under a recall of over 600 thousand vehicles across their lineup including the Sportage of this exact manufacturing year. In 2019, kia expanded the vehicles covered to avoid a class action lawsuit. But I was told that my VIN doesn't qualify for the recall or the kia engine settlement. My vehicle only had 94000 miles on it and I performed all routine maintenance timely. I am the second owner of this vehicle and apparently the 10 year or 100k warranty also doesn't apply to me. I worked in automotive industry for years. Everyone knows that all of these engines are made with dozens of shared components to keep costs down during manufacturing, regardless of what your VIN is. Had it been my 15-year-old son, learning how to drive for the first time, he would not have had the experience to know how to handle the situation. He would most likely have that day or caused a massive accident on the highway. It is shameful that kia won't help customers like me when they know these engines are all defective. Does it take multiple deaths from car accidents before kia will act on behalf of their customers? do the right thing kia!.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/06/2018

At only 97,000 miles our 2012 kia engine seized and threw a rod onto the interstate. It was 97 degrees out and out 1 yo was stranded with us on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere until help arrived. Come to find out it was a common issue with this kia and Hyundai engine. There was even a recall. Unfortunately kia said that the problem was only certain VIN numbers and that ours want produced at the same place. The internet is full of this same issue. It's obviously a design issue or a larger production issue. I cannot express the economic bind this put our family in and kia made it very clear that they don't care. They were even rude and dismissive on their customer care line.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/22/2017

The contact's granddaughter owns a 2006 kia Sportage. While driving at an unknown speed, the driver heard a banging sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and believed that the harmonic balancer had failed. The contact spoke with glassman kia (28000 telegraph rd, southfield, mi 48034) who advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The approximate failure mileage was 38,430.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1998 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 05/30/2013

This is a repeat of confirmation no. 10514519, but with "was there an injury or fatality? marked "yes" above. Driver and passenger scalded with boiling radiator fluid with foot on pedal, had to keep foot on petal to get off road. On may 30, 2013, at approx. 4:30pm edt, I was driving my 1998 kia Sportage on the garden state parkway north, just after entering the highway at exit 98 in wall, NJ. The air conditioner had not been working well. The local temperature was in the high 90s, near 100 degrees. I had a passenger in the front passenger seat. Suddenly, anti-freeze smoke came out of the dashboard vents, then, hot scalding anti-freeze began falling on my right foot as it was on the accelerator pedal. At the same time, the front-seat passenger was also getting scalded. In my case, I sustained a 1st to 2nd degree burn on my right small (pinky) toe, which was blistered. It was fortunate that I was able to get off at the monmouth service area at milepost 100 of the garden state parkway in wall, NJ. My view is that this is a serious safety issue caused by design oversight, not merely a maintenance issue on a old car. For example, if a heater core breaks and does not heat, that is a maintenance problem. However, if it breaks and an unexpected driver gets hurt, and compounded, loses control of the vehicle, and moreover, has to put his foot back onto the accelerator pedal to control the car in a hot-liquid stream, this is an unacceptable safety condition due to failure to safely contain hot liquids.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 1997 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 04/23/2001

On 4/23/01 I took my car to westcott Kia Motors, I had a concern reguarding my transmission, they inspected and said theyfound switch stop lamp wasnt working at which time they replaced it , it was under warranty, they also replaced an egr valve that was under warranty, still to no avail of having my transmission concernes resolved with this dealer (after all these repairs , my car still had the same problem I brought it in for) I filed a complaint with kia consumer affairs. I waited a couple of months and decided to try my luck at another dealer in the area so I went to el cajon kia on 11/19/01 an allowed them to work on my car at which time they ordered a transfer case to be installed on 12/05/01, they replaced the transfer case and it broke while I was on the freeway 12/07/01 at which time I had the vehicle towed to their shop, they repaired the transfer case again and still the clunking noise I had brought it in for was still there in my car, I drove my car for a few more days untill it started to hesitate on me and the engine light came on, I had my car towed back to el cajon kia and the technician took a test drive with me and stated while we were driving my car that kia only pays them for 2 hours of service to vehicles, and that it was normal play that I was hearing in my vehicle, after all the days in the shop and all the repairs done, my car was no better than when I took it in for it to be repaired, I feel like they did more damage than good to my vehicle, and I also feel that there is a major problem with my transmission that the dealer failed to repair, I just took my car to rancho kia (where I bought it from and had repair problems with reguarding my tire latch) and they had to repair wiring to maf sensor and replaced my egr valve and also my purge solenoid was broken and they said the clunking noise is my front hub bearings are loose.
