Driving straight down the highway in the mountains, the car stalled 3 times when I would let off the gas. It began making a noise like the muffler wasn't working, then a knocking noise under the hood, and the noise under the hood got louder. I had the car towed to my repair shop. He told me the engine needed to be overhauled or replaced. I spoke to the dealer, the said the same thing. They want $9,800 to replace the engine.

Intake manifold runner control went out right after warranty. I originally had this issue in 2014 at approximately 38k miles- when it would have been covered under warranty. In 2014 the flap was stuck open, they closed the flap, cleared the code and it didn't become a problem again until 2017- right after the warranty expired. Both times I had this issue, I was driving down residential streets, so under 25 mph. Both times the engine sounded so horrible, I was afraid the engine was going to blow up. My question is how did the vehicles computer not detect this as an issue for 3 years following the initial code and how much engine damage did this cause? the engine tapping noise has continuously gotten worse, even after I had the part replaced. It's so noisy in park, not to mention how loud the sound is during acceleration. They are currently only recalling the engines on the 2012 Sportage turbo but I can tell you there is something wrong with my car. This recall is either not being thorough with this recall or its intentional to minimize the companies loss on this recall.

March 2017 (89500 miles) check engine indicator was on. Was experiencing engine vibration at high rpms, vibrations when shifting, and loss of engine power. Kia dealer replaced timing chain. July 2017 (94156 miles) engine idling loud and rough, engine whines out, would not shift till reached high rpms. No engine light indicator at this time. Kia dealer service advisor could not duplicate any concerns. After scan performed on vehicle, no codes thrown, suggested down stream catalyst be changed after after further inspection. We had catalyst replaced at muffler shop. The shop indicted that the catalyst was not faulty. December 2018 (113000 miles) engine vibration turned into engine knocking, decrease in power, continue to shift at high rpms. No engine light indicator. Return to kia dealer, informed by dealer that we need a new engine. I feel my engine troubles begin in March of 2017, while under warranty, and was not diagnosed appropriately by the dealership. Leading to an outofpocket expense for an engine.
The contact owns a 2014 kia Sportage. While driving 35 mph, hot air suddenly emitted from the ventilation unit without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the compressor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred two days after the vehicle was serviced for an oil change. In addition, when the vehicle was shut off, an abnormal sound emitted from the muffler. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 82,000.

Over the last six months or so, my kia Sportage SUV have been stalling periodically without warning. I never know when it is going to happen. I can be driving on the highway at 65 mph or 25 mph and it will stall. It has happened on sunny days as well as rainy days. I've contacted gateway kia in denville NJ many times complaining about this issue to no avail. The service manager joe told me to try using sunoco premium gas to no avail. I also had the manifold changed but the stalling still happens. I've contacted kia corporation and was told by bruce hartd since my car has over 187,000 miles (mostly highway miles) and since the dealership haven't been able to reproduce the stalling there is nothing kia can do. I was told by kia corporation that my car is not part of their engine stalling recall to be announced may 19th. I think it should be included because my car engine is also stalling making it very dangerous for me to use it but it is the only form of transportation I have to get back and forth to work. Please help!.
The contact owns a 2002 kia Sportage. The contact stated that the vehicle was "missing" while idle and "back firing". The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where multiple issues were diagnosed (power train, base engine problem, exhaust manifold). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 187,000 and the current mileage was 187,000.

After several times that the engine stopped running and kia dealership couldn't find the problem, as I turned into the dealership the engine stopped running and I coasted into the parking lot. Repair order stated possible solenoid failure (code p0665) and replaced bank 2 intake manifold tuning valve solenoid. This was on 10/2010. The car was bought by us as new. Again, the engine has stopped while decelerating and/'or turning (Dec. 21, 2011). This is the third time in 3-4 weeks. Called kia consumer telephone number in owner's manual and they have no other incidents reported for this problem. Car know has 90,000 miles on it and they said we're out of warranty and we should take it to our kia dealer in our town. Called them and earliest appointment is next week as their technician is in school. The wife and I are worried that we may be "rear-ended" as this happened on a busy highway, as we were braking to stop at a traffic light or turning into a driveway.

I started taking my 2002 kia Sportage to the dealer and it had a clunking sound in the back. I took it in and the technician said he thought it was the muffler and it was loose so he kicked it with his foot and sent me on my way. I got a new muffler and it still made the noise so I took it to a local shop and it was the differential failure. It ended up costing me over 2500. I had to have a new differential put in and it every once in awhile makes a clunking noise when you put the transmission in gear. If the tech would have made the right decision it would have been covered by warranty. I have owned several cars in my life and never had this happen to any of them. I feel like the kia people should reimburse me for my time and money!!!.
Consumer states that the tire latch on the back of 2001 kia Sportage I broke. This was latch that held the spare tire carrier, it also has to open in order for the consumer to open truck. The owners mechanic has oiled and fixed the tire carrier for a temporary fix. The owner has taken the vehicle to the dealership for repairs, and they said they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle and couldn't fix the latch until it was broken, and then they could repair it. The owner has not called kia. The latch has been broken for about 2 months. The owner suggested that the latch could have rotted out. The owner had taken the vehicle last year on June 12, 2004 to have the tail pipe fixed. The kia dealership body shop that was suppose to fix the tailpipe, did not repair the tailpipe. The car was rattling from the exhaust. The owner's mechanic removed the rotted exhaust system, the kia dealership was suppose to fix this and did not at this point the vehicle on had 13,623 miles on it at this point. The dealer is no longer with the address or phone number they closed down.

Heat shield broke away, muffler affected and needs replacement due to heat shield. I contacted the kia dealership in reno, nv and the attendant stated my car is no longer under warranty. I informed him of my car, daughter's and friends vehicles all having heat shield/muffler issue. I asked who I should inform of the possible assembly line issue? he stated "the dealership". My daughter has a 2002 kia Sportage and a friend has a 2002 kia Sportage (all 4x4). Within 5 months all three vehicles have had the identicle failure. Am concerned the muffler and/or heat shield can harm occupants in or out of vehicle, especially on highway while traveling in the event any parts should drop off.

Vehicle caught on fire within the engine compartment on three separate occasions while driving 45 mph or more. Consumer extinguished the fires. After the last incident vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed consumer that the cause was due to oil dripping onto the manifold. Manufacturer was also notified.
Heat shield broke away, muffler affected and needs replacement due to heat shield. My mom contacted the kia dealership in reno, nv regarding the issue. The person she spoke with stated my car was under warranty, but since (while I was traveling and in CA and the rattle got so bad I had a licensed mechanic wire it together) he says it is now not covered under warranty. My mom asked the guy at the dealership who she should contact, such as, Kia Motor America, as a possible assembly line issue. He stated to her (and she has a complaint for filed out as well through NHTSA today) "the dealership. " my concern is a safety issue and concerns over a "dealership" turning in safety issues to the proper authority, let alone my car should have been fixed regardless of who touched it as I was traveling out of state. The muffler had to be wired or it would have fallen off due to the heat shield breaking away and damaging the muffler system. I have a young child and her safety comes first!.
2001 kia Sportage 4x4 with 76k miles. Within the last 3 weeks I have had to have the front brakes totally replaced, alternator and 2 belts replaced, muffler tailpipe rusted thru, and both front bearing hubs need to be replaced (wobbly).
The contact owns a 2002 kia Sportage. While driving 55 mph, the engine roared. The dealer stated that the manifold cracked and repairs were made. The current mileage was 83,846 and failure mileage was 18,000.
99 kia Sportage surges when starting and idles so rough when stopped that you think the car will die, has died a few times. Dealer has not been able to determine the cause to repair. All recall work was done, including the wiring harness fix sc014, but there was no symptom of problem then. Extended warranty has expired, and continually finding problem with car. Also tail pipe recently broke off had to be replaced. I now have a spreadsheet of the problems and repairs. Would like to fix this problem if I knew what it was. Had mass air flow sensor, throttle position sensor, numerous other parts replaced as well as a tune up. Also the exhaust smells bad. Engine doesn't have much pick up on small hills either.

I bought a kia Sportage in April 2002. Since then, the car has been brought back to the kia service center on four separate occasions for the same problem. The engine will sputter, the car shakes, the rpms go to 0 and the header pipe glows red hot (literally), and all of a sudden the car will lose 75% of its power. This is dangerous. This car has maybe 10,000 miles on it and it was bought brand new. This is ridiculous and not acceptable. The service center has replaced the rotors (keep in mind this is on 10,000 miles), the catalytic converter, head pipe, muffler and the rest of the entire exhaust system, and spark plugs. Up to this date, they have not found the problem and even as I type this, the car is sitting in the service center the fourth time. I was given a rental vehicle the third time. But this time, they have not given me a rental or replacement vehicle because two are out of commission due to accidents and one is currently being used. They say that they have to hook the car up to a computer and drive it numerous mile to record data. I just want a car that works.

For a period of 30-45 minutes after starting the vehicle gasoline and exhaust fumes entered the passenger's cabin. A company named green circle tested the vehicle, which tested positive for carbon monoxide. Passengers complained of headaches while in the vehicle, and driver sometimes became dizzy. Dealer replaced the catalytic converter twice, intake manifold once, and fuel injectors once. These repairs did not remedy the problem.
The muffler and catalytic converter failed. (attorney for client).
The heat shield on my catalytic converter rusted off,the manifold cracked, the muffler rusted through within a year, the widshield wiper transmission broke and was replaced, while the kia Sportage is engaged in 4wd it pops out into two wheel drive and causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle. This has happened to me numerous times this winter and the recalled parts have now failed again causing kia to put in manual hubs from 1997 into my 1999 SUV. I feel this is a danger to all who own a kia Sportage and I have contacted a lawyer to look into possible litigation against kia. I have found a recall on a previouse modle from 1998 but the components seals are failing in the replacment parts hubs . Thank in advance for your time and letting me inform you of this dangerouse situation. . . Ed geisler.
While driving had noticed a burning odor. Took to dealer & informed consumer it was the oil that was burning, but odor still persisted. Lifted trunk for usage & noticed carpet had burned. A friend checked under vehicle & noticed a hole on top of muffler. Notified dealer & was charged to have muffler replaced.
