1 Radiator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 09/22/2019

2012 kia Sportage ex purchased June 2019 with 69,974 miles. The engine seized up September 2019 with 72466 while driving 60 mph with no warning at all; no dash lights, no temperature gauge rising - nothing. All that was heard was a couple rapping sounds and then a big thud coming from the engine compartment followed by a total loss of power steering and brakes. After we struggled to get the car off the road without getting rear-ended, we tried to restart it and smoke started coming from under the hood. No fire started. Fluid levels fine (radiator full; oil full - the car has only been driven 2492 miles since we bought it. Diagnosis of a seized engine was confirmed by a mechanic. The kia dealership quoted me a price of $6700 for a used replacement engine with 109,000 miles. Another local mechanic quoted roughly the same for another high mileage engine. This solution is a tough pill to swallow considering my engine only had 72466 miles on it when it died. Whose to say that the older engine wouldn't fail in the near future. My understanding is that for various Hyundai/kia vehicles with the same base engine as mine (2. 4 l) made in the 2010-2014 time frame had a recall due to premature engine failure/seized bearings. The difference between the recalled vehicles and mine is simply the fuel/air injection system (gdi versus my naturally aspirated mpi). Since the seizing issue involves the core mechanical components of the engine and not the peripheral plumbing, and given the high number of reported incidents to the NHTSA along with several new class action lawsuits, I feel it is only a matter of time before my engine is covered under the umbrella of the first recalls of the gdi engine. However that doesn't help pay my current monthly car payment while the car sits in the driveway.

2 Radiator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/09/2019

August 2019, I took my vehicle into my dealership after having driven the car for only four months for them to tell me that the radiator overheated and the engine blew and that I would have to pay $4000+ to get it fixed. I purchased my vehicle late March - early April 2019 and was not notified of any sort of recall concerning this issue. When I took my vehicle in early August the recall was still not brought to my attention and they were going to charge me for maintenance for an issue that was clearly common for my particular vehicle.

3 Radiator problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 08/22/2018

Went out to get in my car and come home and it wouldn't start. It would roll over but nothing. Had to call a tow truck to come tow it to a repair shop. Thought it was just the radiator with a hole in it but with further investigation into it the head gasket had blown. No worning signs that anything was wrong . The heat gauge never moved while I was driving it. No lights nothing before leaving it sit for about 30 min and coming out to a car that wouldn't start.

8 Radiator problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 11/19/2013

In March 2013 I had casey kia install a refurbished engine to replace my bad engine because the mileage had surpassed the warranty. Out of pocket I spent about 3300. 00. I drove this car for another six months to which I had no known issues until on November 19, 2013. It started binding and hard shifting from 2-3 gear. Fluid was also on radiator. Casey also installed radiator at the time the engine was installed. They said in their report they replaced all fluids and replaced filters. Come to find out when I took this vehicle to ammoco transmission on November, 19, 2013 that not only was the transmission bad but radiator was bad. . No engine light was on at any time. They did a complete 100 point system check come to find out casey kia installed engine incorrectly leaving the engine light completely off so that if I had any issues what so ever that I would be forced to pay more out of pocket for intensive repairs to my vehicle. This car became so unsafe to drive that I was forced to have to trade it in to hall Hyundai which of course I got 1800. 00 for a 10,000. 00 vehicle. Not only did I have to give up my favorite vehicle I was forced into having to buy a car I did not like and did not want. . Because I needed immediate transportation due to being military. . I reported this issue to the kia corporation which they are investigating. I have complete reports from ammoco and the fact that I had to redo the fluids and redo the oil changes after it came out of casey kia hands . This vehicle has engine severe transmission electrical dashboard issues and is not certified preowned. . And if is a lie. . Thank you for your time and if you need to contact me please do I have all the maintenance history on this vehicle and its not pretty. . 9 Radiator problem of the 2002 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

2002 kia Sportage. Dealer and kia admitted the car had the part recalled. The plastic fan broke and pieces went into the radiator and hoses. The dealer gave me a price of 660 dollars to fix the repairs. However, they said I was responsible for the charges since they sent out a repair notice approx 3 years ago which I never received. I had towed the car to the dealer and they refused to repair it and pay for the repairs. I called kia and they said that if the part was recalled and caused the damage they would pay for it. They were gonna contact the dealer so when I called again they said they wouldn't pay.

12 Radiator problem of the 2002 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/10/2007

Our 2002 kia Sportage was due for a new timing belt so we had it replaced, subsequently a couple of months later we received notification that there was a recall on the fan blade and had it replaced. Approximately 5 weeks later the fan blade came off and went through the radiator and the engine seized up, so we had it towed to the dealership. Their assessment was that it wasn't their fault but that the fan clutch let go, which is attached to the fan blade, and they claimed that they hadn't touched the fan clutch when they replaced the blade. After talking to the service personnel and asking about the procedure to replace the blade I was finally told, "it was done by magic". Contacted the kia representative who said he'd look into it, but to date have never heard from him, only the dealership who wanted me to get the car off their lot. They were willing to replace the engine for $3000, but fortunately I had access to resources and got it done for half the price. Wouldn't do business with this dealer again after being treated this way, and to think we'd purchased 4 vehicles from them.

15 Radiator problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/24/2006

I have a 2006 kia Sportage. From the day I bought it ,it's made a boiling sound in the dash broad when I turn my car off. I took it to the dealership and dropped it off to have it looked at. When I picked it up I was told that my cooling system had not been burped right. So they drained the system and re-filled it. And that at should take care of the problem. Well it didn't !!!!!!! it's worse now than before. And to add to it, it looks like I'm growing magic rocks on the left and right side of the radiator. It's so green in color plus it looks fuzzy. At the same time when the car is hot the cooling fan will go on. But as soon as I turn the car off there's no more fan, ever. And for the last couple days the traction controls light on the dash is lit up and won't turn off unless I turn the motor off and wait about 10 mins. When I took it in for this I was told there was a recall on this, but there is two different systems and the system I have isn't the one with the recall.

Failure Date: 03/20/2006

The driver was traveling from boston on the massachusetts turnpike toward new york state. As she approached the new york state toll booths, brakes, steering, and acceleration suddenly failed and the vehicle, a 2001 kia Sportage with 66,018 miles began smoking. The driver managed to turn slightly to avoid crashing into the toll booths and found herself headed for a large propane tank on the grounds. She pulled the emergency brake and managed to stop within a few feet of the tank. Believing the car to be on fire, she exited quickly. The car was towed to lia kia in schenectady, new york. The allstate insurance investigator and the mechanic agreed that the fan clutch had broken off and moved throughout the area under the hood, causing extensive damage. The allstate investigator has pictures of the fan clutch and damage. Insurance did not pay because the problem was a defective part. The estimated repair was $4500. 00. The vehicle remained at lia kia while the national kia headquarters was contacted. Mr. Ryan christianson was the contact there. He maintained that the vehicle was out of warranty, so kia had no responsibility. He suggested that the vehicle may not have been maintained properly and wanted all past records sent to him, until he was informed that there were pictures at allstate. Verbal and written communication are available. The fact that there was very nearly a catastrophic accident which would have involved many vehicles and individuals was pointed out to him. The vehicle remained at lia kia until may, when they began to demand rent. With no apparent remaining options, the vehicle was repaired at a cost of $4595. 99 and driven home on may 19, 2006. There was some difficulty driving home and the vehicle was taken to legacy kia in e. Syracuse, new york, the original purchase site, where the thermostat was repaired at a further cost of $306. 13. 21 Radiator problem of the 1998 Kia Motor Sportage

Failure Date: 07/09/1999

Since purchasing this vehicle, it has been in and out of garage due to engine coolant smell. It usually takes several visits before the dealer decides to replace radiator, water pump, etc. This has happened several times. I have had 3 radiators in this vehicle and the coolant smell still is strong. There are many other problems with this vehicle, including air conditioning system does not work, on and off 4wd is inoperable, etc. I have tried to arbitrate with the lemon law with the attorney general's office, but was unsuccessful because of lack of documentation. Is there anything more I can do to help me correct these problems or get reimbursement for this vehicle? thank you.
