36 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/27/2023

2nd time in 40k miles right rear caliper locked up mechanic suggest getting both left and right replaced figuring if one failed its only a matter of time, calipers should last 10 years and 2nd replacement in 4 years, this is a bad safety issue.

37 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/26/2023

At 2:00 on a clear afternoon I was slowly coasting into a right hand turn into a parking space, and lightly tapping the brake to finalize the stop, when the car accelerated hard forward over a curb and a sidewalk into the brick wall of a building. Airbag was deployed. My injuries were a nasty wrist contusion and bloody gashes where the airbag "door" deployed and I also had complete seatbelt brusing on my throat, chest and across my abdomen. This after traveling a mere 7-8 feet. At the time I was very shaken up and incredulous that such a thing could have happened logically, and conceded that perhaps I had made a mistake somehow. As I settled down later I became dubious, especially when I got behind the wheel of my rental car and 100% when I sat in my actual car at the wrecking yard. I am crystal clear I was depressing just the brake. Even if I had accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake (I did not) it would not have accelerated to the degree that it did. I am now scared of my car and am just hoping it is declared totaled by my insurance so I don't have to drive it again - any car but that one.

38 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/02/2023

On septmber 2, 2023 the car had been on a 4 hour road trip. I came into the driveway, left the car running in park with the brakes on (listening to music while I cleaned the car out) it was idylling for about 5 minutes. I went to the drivers side door, which was open and reached in to turn the car off using the start/stop button. Before I could turn the car off, it started backing up and the door ran over me. The car was definitely in park and the brake was on. There was no reason for the parking brake to disengage.

39 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/31/2023

My car only has 32000 miles on it and I was told that I need new brakes and calipers. My car is making grinding and creaking noises when I back up, stop or get into it. Because of these brake issues it feels like the car is taking longer to stop. I have never had a car that needed this extensive of a brake job at 32000 miles. This seems excessive.

40 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

Brand new 2023 Mazda Cx-5 with 150 miles on it experienced unintended acceleration while braking. Pulled into a parking spot with my foot on the brakes but the car didn't stop & even accelerated over a sidewalk and into a building. I experienced a bruise from the seatbelt. Airbags did not deploy. Someone could have been killed if they had been on the sidewalk. Car is currently at an auto body shop to fix the cosmetic damages, and once released, will have the car towed to our local Mazda dealership/service center to get the car inspected. In doing research on NHTSA's website, at least 4 vehicles (2-2023 Mazda Cx-5s and 2-2023 Mazda cx-30s) have experienced this issue. Mazda needs to recall these vehicles and investigate.

41 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/07/2023

Car with 15,000 miles needs a front and back brake job. Front rotors are rusty and chipping. Brake pads are chipping and front end has vibrations when brake pedal is applied. Back brakes are not as bad but will need repair soon. 15,000 miles on a set of front brakes pad and rotors is unacceptable, rust and chips should not happen with a new 2 year car. This is a safety concern. Car was in for oil change an tire rotation when problem was found. I believe brakes should last for at least 25,000 or more. This is a possible defect in materials or engineering. This should be looked into and recall acted upon.

42 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/04/2023

When applying the brakes car surges forward. If put in neutral engine races. Very difficult to bring to a stop with reduced braking. Multiple occurrences. Dealer states vehicle is operating within design perimeters.

43 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 05/28/2023

Brakes are very poor, car lurches forward at stop lights and you have to stomp the brake pedal to prevent running into the car in front of you.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

Parking brake system malfunction. Flashing brake light and the parking exclamation point light on. When I try to release the emergency parking brake it continues to light up on the dashboard as well as yellow flashing light on the physical brake similar problem with 2016 model. Seen multiple people with similar problem but no solution restarting the car multiple times makes the light go away eventually.

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/31/2023

Brakes make a jerking sound decelerating from 40 miles an hour or from coming off a freeway ramp. After two trips to the dealership, the jerking sound still persists, the dealership had mentioned it was either the ball bearings or the brake pads were worn out, but somehow the noise is still there. The vehicle still makes stop safely, but we feel that if this is not resolved that this may become a greater safety issue down the road.

46 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/09/2023

On Feb. 9, 2023, I started my vehicle and lots of warning indicators lit up the dash of my well-maintained vehicle. Check engine, abs, tpms, sbcs to name some of the warning lights. When I took my car to the dealer, they told me the left front wheel speed sensor had mechanical failure and would need to be replaced. Said the car's antilock brakes wouldn't work without it being replaced. My car also has the automatic brakes to prevent collision and stability control systems which are dependent on wheel speed sensors' function. My vehicle mileage was 59307 when I took it to the dealer. Over $600 repair bill.

47 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/29/2023

Left rear outer brake pad was worn down to the backing plate. After repairs were made, it started smoking while driving. We thought it was going to catch on file. I found a Mazda service bulletin - 04-005/16 - regarding a defective brake control module that controls the electronic parking brake. Why wasn't this a safety recall?.

48 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/18/2023

My epb or electronic parking brake started to malfunction. It will lock up during parking, and driving and stay locked. It will flash malfunction light, and the parking brake light on the dash will come on, and off. Sometimes if I turn off the vehicle for a while, it will again function. I have not been driving this vehicle, because of the issue I am very scarred my brakes will lock up when it is icy or wet, or slick, and I will injure myself or others unintentionally. When I first had this issue, I decided to do research, and it seems to be a very common problem across all 2016 model Mazda Cx-5 with ebp. I suspect the ebp module is defective, and I cannot afford to pay the dealer 1500 to replace this part to correct the safety hazard Mazda originally created. This should never happen to me or the countless others whom own the 2016 model with ebp. A quick google search will result in countless claims of this same issue with the 2016 model.

49 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/18/2023

I experienced a sudden unintended acceleration incident. I pulled into my driveway and stopped the vehicle with my foot firmly on the brake since my driveway is sloped. I pushed the garage door opener remote when suddenly the vehicle accelerated and shot forward hitting the garage door. There was no brake action and all backup systems failed. There was no automatic emergency braking or forward collision warning. There were no warning lights displayed. No airbags were deployed. If the garage door had been open, the vehicle would have hit a concrete wall in the garage. The vehicle was taken to the Mazda dealership and a full circle inspection and diagnostic check. Mazda found no codes and everything was working as designed in vehicle.

50 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/01/2023

Sometimes, the breaks will not go all the way down to the floor and act like theyre not working. It's very odd and only does it once in a while. I have constant issues with the technology in the car. It changes my music, the buttons get stuck and my it acts up. My aunt has the same model and is running into the same issues. I never received a letter in the mail about the last recall and have had issues where it doesnt seem like my engine is getting the power it once did. This was early on after I got the car. My gas mileage has significally decreased even after oil changes.

51 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/01/2023

Autobraking activates randomly. Mazda scans codes and returns the vehicle. They have refused to service or disable the system. Nhtsa laws are dangerous and this tech is not ready for road use. Avoid Mazda at all costs!.

52 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/26/2022

Calipers sticking causing brakes to wear down every 3 months.

53 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/28/2022

Upon exiting my local car wash, I drove my car around to the area used for vacuuming. I pulled into the parking space and when I applied the brake pedal to stop, the car suddenly accelerated and crashed into the wall of the building. I have the car wash security camera footage of this incident. It shows my brake light is on at the car's point of acceleration and my brake light is on at point of impact with the wall. If you need to review it, I can email it to you.

54 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/25/2022

When coming to a stop, car accelerated and went over curb. From a search of the internet I found examples with this and other cars where people with larger shoes had the same problem of pressing the brake and unintentionally pressing the accelerator pedal at the same time. I read of one manufacturer that programed the car to brake if both pedals are pressed at the same time and ignore the accelerator. The same thing happened in my 2015 Mazda cx5. In that case I had it checked at the dealer. The technician found nothing wrong but was able to reproduce the problem when his boot pressed both the brake pedal and accelerator because both pedals were so close together. Since this would probably be an inexpensive software change, it would be prudent for a safety recall by manufacturers that have pedals that are close to one another.

55 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/10/2022

I had my brakes replaced and when they reactivated the parking brake, it's only working on one side of the car. The mechanic informed me that the car has a faulty actuator and this is a very common problem with my car.

56 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

Last month, my vehicle suddenly applied the electronic parking brake (epb) while I was driving. The epb & related warning lights illuminated & would not release until the vehicle was turned off. After turning off the vehicle, the epb motor could be heard applying the brake to the rear wheels. When the car was restarted, the epb would remain off for a period of time but would then suddenly reapply. I took my vehicle to a Mazda dealer & they determined the calipers & epb motor had failed due to my vehicle not being placed in service mode by the brake servicer. This explanation makes no sense because the brakes were replaced over a year ago (& not since) with thousands of miles being driven since then without this issue arising. I also conducted my own research & found that Mazda has issued at least 3 separate technical service bulletins (TSB) on this issue. The first two recommended replacement of the epb switch & the third determined that defective calipers were the cause and should be replaced. I asked the dealer to save my calipers & confirmed that they are part of the defective batch noted in this TSB. I have contacted Mazda (including their legal counsel) & they are unwilling to provide any explanation or engage in any sort of investigation. As former legal counsel for an automotive company, I believe this presents a serious safety issue for consumers based upon the fact that a parking brake could randomly engage while driving & cause sudden loss of speed/control. Thankfully, this did not result in harm to my family, myself or others. I am certain that this issue is affecting others based on chatboard discussions I have found online related to this topic (which helped me find the TSB). I am concerned that Mazda may have attempted to undertake a silent recall via this TSB where in warranty customers are covered & out of warranty customers are given the 'service mode' explanation to justify their responsibility. This should have been handled as a recall by Mazda.

57 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/22/2022

On July 22, my sister and I were traveling on I-95 going south. We stopped at the maryland house near aberdeen, MD. I was looking for a parking place and was driving very slowly. I slowed further to turn into a place on the right, near the south end of the parking lot and was attempting to put the car in park when the car accelerated abruptly, lurched forward, crossed over the concrete curb at the end of the parking space, and was heading right for I-95 which was straight ahead. I had never taken my foot off the brake. I tried to brake harder but that did not stop the car. I therefore turned right onto a service road to avoid crashing onto I-95. I then noticed a car coming toward me and swerved to the right back toward the parking lot, crossing over the curb at that parking spot, and slamming into a parked car and side swiping a truck. I only took my foot off the brake when the car stopped. The airbags did not deploy. After the car stopped, I was unable to turn the engine off. When I returned home, I looked on line to see if anyone else had reported a similar experience. . Read more...

58 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/25/2022

My Mazda has a feature called sbs (Smart brake support). It is touted as a safety feature, as it will brake the car when it approaches an object without driver braking. It can be disabled by the driver via the navigation panel; however, it automatically engages again upon engine start up. On a few occasions, when approaching a vehicle, I have braked and release, upon seeing the vehicle ahead begin to move. On such occasions, my Mazda's sbs activated, screeching my car to a near stop, scaring me and the vehicle behind me nearly rear-ended me. This action scared me, which affects my ability to control the situation and conduct appropriate action. I have contacted Mazda to ask for a permanent deactivation of this dangerous feature. They have been unable/unwilling to assist. They have concern that if a different driver should drive my vehicle, it would be problematic. I explained that this is my vehicle and I fear their sbs feature will cause me to be rear-ended and seriously injured. I have requested that the Mazda customer service rep submit a safety complaint on this issue. An internet search finds that there are other customers with the same safety concern on Mazda's sbs feature. It is time that this be addressed.

59 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/16/2022

On April 16, 2022, around 6:45pm, I drove my new Mazda cx5 (@ 3500 miles) into our church parking lot and turned right down the first row of cars. It was light out and the weather was pleasant. I turned right into a parking space with my foot on the brake. The car was facing and perpendicular to a sidewalk that was about 10 feet away. It was separated by a grassy median. When I depressed the brake further to shift from drive into park, the car surged forward and accelerated. There was a pedestrian on the sidewalk in front of the car. I turned the wheel to the right at a 90 degree angle to avoid hitting her. I kept pressing the brake but the car kept accelerating until it crashed into a large tree. The airbag deployed. Both the pedestrian and I were transported to the hospital. The pedestrian had bruises on her leg and hip, but fortunately was not more seriously injured and was released from the hospital. I was admitted to the hospital for contusions to the heart. The car hood was crushed and the car was totaled. The incident was terrifying. The police estimated the car went from nearly a standstill to about 40mph in about 15-20 feet. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the accident. I checked the NHTSA website after the accident and downloaded 16 similar complaints where low mileage Mazda cx5s accelerated out of control when drivers were attempting to park or stop.

The contact had contacted the dealer however the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 1,546.

61 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/02/2022

Certified Mazda cx5 sold with faulty wheel bearing and had to be back in service less than 24 hours from purchase. They failed to replace the piece of engine after 35. 000 maintenance and another dealer found 5 areas that needed work 3 weeks later. Brake warning system went off took5 days to determine it was a dead switch and replaced exactly one month later brake system warning goes off after car was in park and off for 25 minutes at the airport. I was told that I was fine to drive it despite the manual clearly saying do not drive if brake warning lights go on. And it was supposed to have been repaired. The dealership expected me to believe that a rubber mat set off the high tech brake system this is ridiculous they bought back car did not return the 5000 down payment or 14000 trade in and refused to honor the store warranty of buy back for life kbb 125 of trade in value. They refused to do anything to cancel warranty but then carol canceled all 3 and had no authority or permission by me to illegally cancel my warranty and refuse to provide the documentation that the warranty company insist the dealer has to provide. There is no record of my ownership of this vehicle when VIN is run ir the excessive amount of damage to the car by koons Mazda silver spring.

62 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/02/2022

The parking break is getting stuck and we are unable to release it. We have gone to various Mazda showrooms and service centers but no one have been able to find the issue. We are scared that on the highways the car can malfunction. The parking break warning sign comes on on its own even when the vehicle is moving which is a big concern for us while driving. When I searched for this issue online, I can see few articles where different models of Mazda has same issue and they recalled those vehicles. Mazda service center people after charging me for the issue, suggested not to use parking brake, even I don’t use that it gets on by itself. There is a warning symbol. It is available for inspection when requested. Electronic parking brake component is not working. Multiple Mazda showroom people confirmed this and none of them can fix this.

63 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/09/2022

Brakes failed when at complete stop car lurched forward about 2 car lengths.

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/08/2022

Car has 38000 miles and the caliber needed replaced yesterday. Brakes started grinding a day before that slightly in the morning by the time I got off work and drove home it was so loud I was terrified to break at all. Mechanic said he’s not seen calipers seize up like that in a newer model car.

65 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/24/2022

I parked my car in my driveway and accidentally left the gear in park when I turned off the engine with the push button. This is the first time I had driven this car so I didn't know what to do for the warning beep. I exited the car and took the key fob with me. My daughter exited the car just after me and when she closed the car door the pressure was enough to start the car rolling backwards. The vehicle rolled down our driveway which has a steep slope, across the street, over our neighbor's yard and crashed against their house. We are lucky that no pedestrians or other vehicles were involved. There is significant structural damage to the neighbor's house. A police report was filed. I believe this is a significant safety hazard that a driver could turn off the engine and leave with the key fob while the car is in drive and there is no braking mechanism to prevent the car from rolling! in addition, the quiet warning beep should be more pronounced such as the horn honking or something more extreme to get the attention of the distracted driver.

66 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/14/2022

I was on my way home going down a windy back road going about 45 mph. There was a Jeep in front of me and the mail truck was in front of them. The mail truck went to slow down and take a right onto a different road and as the Jeep slowed down I applied my breaks and there was no response. This was not the first time this had happened in this vehicle but this time I panicked and I had to cut my wheel into the persons front yard to the right of us as I was continuously picking my foot up and slamming it down on the break and there was no response my car was just speeding up. I ended up going into the road that the mail truck was taking a right on and I hit the front of his truck and went flying into the woods and the trees were what stopped me. I now live with constant nerve pain everyday from this and suffer with a compressed lower back fracture that limits me daily from many things. Before this incident I had issues with the breaks and acceleration twice. I had taken it to Mazda and they fixed my “break switch” ? obviously that wasn’t the problem.

67 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/03/2022

The engine has a massive oil leak that seems to be more common than Mazda will admit. The safety-related issue is the oil pours out like pancake syrup which can be bad for other drivers, the environment and cause road asphalt to break down at a rapid pace. I also don't have a warranty. When I consulted Mazda all they wanted to do is charge me $7,000 for a new engine from all the research I found on the internet. This is a problem that is affecting many people because when you only have one vehicle and have no way to make money. Most people will just keep adding oil to keep it going. Many customers are left with a car payment with no way out and a car they can't really drive other than short distances. Something needs to be done to hold them accountable for this common problem. I don't know anyone that can afford a $ 40,000-yard brick. If we can hold big pharma accountable why not vehicle manufactories.

68 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/30/2021

* the emergency brake module failed and it is available for inspection upon request. * the system failed and randomly turned on the parking break while I was actively driving and paused to make a left of a highway exit ramp. The parking break remained on for ~40 mins while I caused a significant disturbance to the traffic and safety of other around me as the exit ramp began to back up while awaiting a tow truck. Since it was the emergency break we were not able to put the car in neutral and push it out of the way. * yes - arlington autocare confirmed the issue and has since replaced the part. * no there were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the parts failure. After the issue was identified I searched online and this seems to be an incredibly common issue with the Mazda 2016 cx5. Multiple other reports exist on line about the failure of this park and the rear breaking system. It is very negligent that a recall has not been filed given the pervasiveness of the issue and the seriousness of the safety concern should the part inevitably fail.

69 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/20/2021

The car is consuming excessive engine oil. Between 3000-4000 miles the low engine oil light comes on. I was on the highway and had to pull over. I was told we don’t need oil change until 5000 miles. Not feeling safe to drive long distance. Dealership acknowledged seal is causing the leaks, but said Mazda won’t cover the cost unless check engine light is on. Also the break pads are moving slightly when breaking, dealership said it’s normal due to break pads are moving back and forth when breaking. However, I can hear the breaks clicking.

70 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/19/2021

At about noon on 12/19/21 I was approaching the tappan zee (mario cuomo) bridge in new york state going west. My car briefly stopped accelerating when I put my foot on the gas pedal but then continued on as normal. No warning lights or other signs of trouble appeared, and I continued onto the bridge and was in the center lane. There was moderate traffic on the bridge. Suddenly, my car started shaking and slowing as if the brakes were being pumped (although I did not put my foot on the brake), and the messages "front radar sensor system malfunction" "forward Smart city brake malfunction" and "Smart brake system malfunction" all flashed on the dashboard screen. My husband turned on the emergency flashers and took a photo of the screen. The car continued slowing down and shaking no matter how hard I pressed the gas pedal. This created an incredibly dangerous situation; I had to get over to the right lane as we continued losing speed, and find somewhere safe to pull over once we got off the bridge. A car or truck going at a normal speed could have easily hit us and caused a catastrophic crash on the bridge. If I could not get out of the center lane quickly, at the rate the car was slowing down, it would have come to a complete stop in the middle of the roadway. I was able to merge right, get across the bridge and get to an exit, all as the car continued lurching and slowing down. At the bottom of the exit, there was a red light; I stopped and turned the car off and back on again. When I tried to accelerate out of the stop, smoke began pouring off the wheels. The car moved across the intersection at a few miles per hour and I was able to pull over safely on the right shoulder on the other side of the intersection. I had only bought the car the previous day, less than 16 hours before the incident. I called Mazda roadside assistance and the dealership; the dealership told me to have the car towed to their service department, so I did.
