1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 10/23/2020

On 3 separate occasions, my vehicle lost brake pedal pressure and had excessive travel to the floor requiring extra distance in order to bring the vehicle to a complete stop abs to avoid a collision. On one occasion, I drove over a bump on the expressway and the brake pedal traveled all the way down to the floor. After pumping the pedal a few times, pressure was restored. All brake components are in proper working order and maintained by an ase master technician. The master cylinder does not show sign of leaking. A check online revealed that the 2009 Muranos had the same exact issue (which is now a recall) that I am experiencing on my vehicle and was discovered to be a faulty abs module. A check also revealed that certain 2011 Murano had the same issue as the 2009 but no recall was ever issued.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 02/06/2020

On Feb. 6th 2020 I was driving my 2011 Nissan Murano (62,000 miles) at 55 mph when I came upon some traffic. When I applied the breaks they went to the floor & I had to pull onto the grass & pump the brakes till the car finally came to a stop. I was 250 miles from home so I stopped at a firestone store to check out my brakes. 5 hours later, the car was ready--they bled the air from the brake lines & when I got back on the road everything was okay. On may 29th, 2020, I was driving & coming on to a road construction crew. I went over 2 sets of speed bumps & when I applied the breaks, they went to the floor. I pumped the brakes & applied the emergency brake to stop the car because there was traffic stopped in front of me. I took the car to my local mechanic & they installed a new master cylinder & bled the brake lines 3 different times. They had the car for 1 week & the car would not stop at slow speeds till the brake pedal was almost to the floor. The car is not safe to drive. On the internet, I can see the numerous complaints about braking on the 2011 Murano. There was a recall on the 2009 models & I think the 2015 models. Nissan needs to step up & correct the problem on the 2011 models. This is a very dangerous situation that requires a recall of the 2011 models. Right now the vehicle is sitting in the garage because the dealership is 65 miles away & the car is not safe to drive.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 10/21/2019

I was exiting the highway when a car abruptly pulled in front of me and I had step on the brakes with great force to stop in time without crashing. Immediately afterwards when I had to use the brakes again at a red light, I had to push down the brake pedal almost all the way down to the floor to stop the car. The brakes felt spongey and provided almost no resistance to my foot as I pressed down. The issue persisted for a few days before I took it to a local mechanic. They tried several of the standard fixes when this type of brake issue arises, including going as far as to replace the master cylinder, which did not fix the issue. The brake issue only was resolved once they put the car in the air, accelerated, and pumped the brakes multiple times which eventually, somehow brought the brakes back to normal capacity. The mechanic says he has seen this issue in many Nissan Muranos and he speculates that the these models have a faulty abs sensor module which causes the brakes to lock up if used too hard. I've had this issue 3 times in the last 2 years, this was the first time the brakes had stayed unusable for several days, posing a major safety issue. I've read online on many websites and have read this same issue being had by other 2011 Nissan Murano owners. The abs sensor module can cost up to $2,000 just for the part itself. With so many complaints, Nissan should issue a recall to repair this major safety issue before someone's brakes go out on the highway and cause a loss of life.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 10/14/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Nissan Murano sl. The contact started to pump the brake pedal untill the vehicle stopped. No warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred for at least two months. The vehicle was taken to an unknown independent mechanic, they replaced the master cylinder ( that did not correct the failure ). The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 51,499. Bp.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 08/31/2019

Without warning, brakes begin to feel spongy, have to press brake pedal almost to floor before response. Several close calls now as a result of intermittent changed braking performance. As a result, had brakes checked, fluid drained, master cylinder replaced, brake lines drained, no change in performance. Not comfortable driving car, feels unsafe.

7 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 07/08/2019

Extended braking distance. After abs deployment pedal travelled all the way to the floor and braking compromised. Same issue as 2009 Murano voluntary recall by Nissan. Master cylinder has been replaced on this vehicle twice.

10 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that the vehicle failed a state safety inspection due to brake pedal being depressed to the floor board without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the brake master cylinder was replaced however, the vehicle failed a second inspection. The contact was informed by the inspector that the vehicle was subjected to NHTSA campaign number: 18v916000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was taken to hall Nissan virginia beach (3757 bonney rd, virginia beach, va 23452) and repaired however, the failure persisted. The contact was informed that the brake booster and brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

11 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 06/30/2019

While attempting to stop from an approximate 30 miles per hour speed, the brake petal travelled nearly all the way to the floor board. The vehicle did eventually slow to a stop but not until I nearly struck the car in front of me. After that, the problem was intermittent. I brought the car to my mechanic who checked the master cylinder and determined the the problem was a defective abs control module. I have seen recalls for defective abs on Murano model years up to 2009 and then again after 2015. However, my 2011 model year falls in the "recall gap" and is not covered. Although abs problems for the 2011 Murano are documented on multiple internet websites, Nissan has not issued an additional recall covering the other model years such as mine. So the expensive repair costs and responsibility for accidents and injuries fall upon the unsuspecting owners of the defective vehicles. Nissan should immediately issue a recall and get the dangerous condition repaired before others find themselves without the ability to safely stop their cars.

12 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 06/09/2019

I depressed the brake pedal normally and felt the braking action start, again normally, but when I applied more pressure, the pedal went almost to the floor before the brakes stopped the vehicle. The mechanic indicated I need new brake pads and master cylinder. After the repairs the brakes still did not work. They found a problem with the 2009 Muranos but will do nothing for the 2010 with the same problems. I called Nissan and they said too bad. Case number 36007466.

13 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 05/22/2019

The first time my brakes went out I almost went to the front of a building. I took it to the mechanic and they drove my car and said nothing was wrong with it. A few weeks later my brakes went out while I was driving on the highway again. I took it back to the mechanic and they decided the master cylinder needed to be replaced. A few weeks later I was driving my car again & it would not stop. The brakes went all the way to the floor. I took my car back to the mechanic and they changed out the new master cylinder with a another Nissan master cylinder. All was fine. A few weeks later and my brakes stopped working again.

14 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 05/20/2019

Without warning, while in motion the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. After analysis, the mechanic thought that it might be the master cylinder. It was not, and he indicated that it was the abs actuator or an abs braking issue. I took it to the Nissan dealer and they said there were no brake recalls and that any service or investigation would be at my expense. This vehicle only has 71,600 miles on it and the braking system certainly should not be compromised at this point. It is a safety issue, that has been haunting Nissan in the past, is my opinion. I feel that Nissan needs to take care of seriousness of this safety.

15 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 04/23/2019

All of a sudden while driving my 2011 Nissan Murano and after driving over a slight bump on a city street in my neighborhood going about 10 mph maybe a little more I was in the process slowing down and making a u turn right in front of my house so I could park in front of our house (thank god!) my brakes failed they went to the floor very suddenly and after re-pumping brakes, I got control and was able to park my Murano. Wth is going on Nissan?? this was scary and I don't wish on this on anyone. My kids drive this car too. Does somebody have to be killed in order to get attention on this safety issue Nissan? this needs to pro-active not re-active. We buy and drive your cars to feel safe not be scared I'm gonna hit a small bump and lose my brakes. The bump and the point where I turned around and lost braking control could not of been more than 75-100 feet away. After parking I checked my master cylinder and the brake fluid looked fine and full. I had no leaks. I am in absolute aww! at what just happened. Someone with authority please investigate this because is gonna get hurt bad or get killed. C. Herrera soon to be ex-owner of this Nissan Murano unless it gets fixed or recalled.

16 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 04/04/2019

Brakes failed and replaced master cylinder twice brakes failed again . Pedal went to the floor while driving.

17 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 09/24/2018

After having soft brake issue, had car checked and put on new front brakes. No change. Was informed by Nissan of my abs actuator involving master cylinder. I carry grand children in my vehicle all the time. Was warned not to travel long distances with this issue. I cannot afford to get this issue taken care of on my own and heard about the federal investigation regarding 2009 Nissan Murano's into this matter by the NHTSA. I am a grandmother extremely concerned about this issue.

18 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 06/05/2018

The brake pedal falls to the floor when depressed rapidly. This is only occasionally, however when it happened last. I stopped the vehicle and tapped the abs brake actuator unit with a rubber mallet and brakes were fine. . I believe the abs valve is defective but the dealer said that the master cylinder is defective & needs to replaced for $800+. They also said if that doesn't cure it, then the brake vacuum booster is also defective and it would cost me $3000! so, they were unable to perform the recall that changes the brake fluid from dot3 to dot 4.

19 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 05/04/2018

Soft brakes, recurring concern, replaced master cylinder and replaced brake fluid, still the soft braking is still present. Pedal goes all the way down in order to brake.

20 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 04/24/2018

2009 Nissan Murano, the brakes goes soft and all the way to the floor but does not stop at all! we had multiple close calls. The brake pads were replaced twice, bled few times; got the master cylinder checked; multiple times by different mechanics. The dealership said that there was nothing wrong first time. Last time they did a brake fluid flush and bled. That didn't fix the problem. My old mechanic pointed me to online multiple complaints regarding the same exact issue. Contacted Nissan today and they denied knowing anything about this issue. There will be major fatality that will happen soon with over 120k of these 2009 models being actively driven in the us.

21 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 04/12/2018

When the vehicle is in motion on city streets, the brake pedal goes to the floor when trying to stop. The vehicle can stop but with a fraction of the braking ability. The pedal continues to push all the way to the floor even when pumping the pedal. It corrects on its own after an hour or so. 4 occasions occurred after hitting a bump. 1 occasion occurred when the abs engaged after hitting a patch of ice. The master cylinder has been replaced (I saved the old one) and the brake pads have been replaced and the problem continues. It has only occurred about 5 times over a span of about 1year so it is very difficult to intentionally repeat and diagnose. Internet research points to a possible sticking abs modulator valve.

22 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 03/28/2018

While driving downtown, suddenly the brake pedal was ineffective except when pressed all the way to the floor. Only an emergency maneuver avoided an accident. The car was taken immediately to the dealer, who identified loss of pressure in the brake system, first replacing the master cylinder without improvement, then diagnosing issues with abs. Carcomplaints. Com and other websites list this as an item under government investigation for 2009 Muranos. The car is at approximately 65,000 miles. Attached is the initial diagnostics from the dealer. Subsequent to master brake cylinder replacement, dealer asserted that was not the problem and are now working on abs.

23 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 02/07/2018

On 02/07/2018 I was driving and hit a bump in the road as approaching a stop sign. Brakes were immediately malfunctioning & petal went to floor. I pumped brakes several times to stop. Drove vehicle home and parked. 03/16/2018 drove to local sears (about 1 1/2 miles). Had vehicle serviced and master cylinder replaced in addition to bleeding brakes several times, but problem with brakes was not resolved. Was advised to take to dealer because abs wasn't working properly. Very dangerous!!! it appears many has had similar problems & NHTSA is currently investigating. It also appears to be a pretty costly repair.

24 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 01/02/2018

Brake pedal goes all the way down and vehicle does not stop. I notice online that a lot of customers are having the same problem with this year and vehicle model. I have read how they had to spend a lot of money on parts and labor because the mechanics couldn't figure out the problem, so they started during power of elimination. I had my mechanic try to find out what was wrong and he tried replacing master cylinder which cost me several hundreds of dollars and the problem remained. I then took it to Nissan dealership and they said it was the abs hydraulic control unit which would cost me $3000 dollars parts and labor, the part a lone cost $1900 dollars. During my investigation many many people are having the same problem and it is said that a recall may be being looked at. Consumers are getting in to car accidents because of this faulty brake system and it seems that no one will address until someone dies. There are no warning lights on the abs system nor does the dealership knows why this is happening. To charge this much for a part is totally ridiculous!!! feel free to call me at anytime for more details on this issue 720-269-9015 john clark denver colorado consumer. I may take further actions if this issue is not address, at the end of the day it should be safety first!!! not making quotas and paying investors.

25 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/13/2017

In December 2017, while driving down the road and making a left turn, the brakes went soft and all of the way to the floor. The master cylinder was replaced shortly thereafter. All of the brake lines were bled. Four months later, the brakes went soft again and all of the way to the floor. After pumping them about 10 times, they return to normal. The master cylinder was replaced a second time. So far, the brakes have been working but afraid this will happen again without warning. I do not feel safe driving this car any longer.

26 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/11/2017

I have had 3 brake issues in less than 2 weeks. My vehicle has 74,000 miles on it and is maintained per manufacturer recommendations. Brake pads and rotors are a year old and passed inspection. The first occurrence I was driving 35 mph and hit a manhole cover. The brakes went spongy and went to the floor. I pumped the brakes a few times and they returned. The second occurrence I was driving around 40 mph and coming around a curve and the same thing happened. The third time it was snowy and very slick. Upon braking on a turn, the abs engaged and I lost all brakes again. These experiences were very scary as I had not control over my vehicle. I use this to transport my grandchildren and the fact that I can loose control over the ability to stop my vehicle intermittently is very alarming. The dealer replaced the master cylinder (with no documented failure). The second occurrence happened less than 5 days later and I brought it back to the dealer where they replaced the abs hydraulic control unit, which cost $3000 for parts and labor! this needs to be recalled as it is dangerous. I have lost faith in Nissan as they have not addressed this issue!.

27 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/09/2017

Brakes go to the floor before engaging. Driving on normal paved road when a vehicle pulled out in front of us, abs engaged and now we have no brakes until touching the floor. Went to Nissan for service and they say it is the abs that needs replacing, 2800. 00. We just had new brakes on the back less than 2 months ago. They say due to numerous complaints on Nissan forums that they believe it is an issue with the abs malfunctioning and not simply replacing the master cylinder as many people have replaced this part first only to need the abs replaced. We tried pumping and hoping for a reset but nothing has helped. Nissan needs to do a recall before a life is lost due to this known issue. We are the one owner of this vehicle, 2009 with less than 65,000 miles on the car. No issues leading up to this nor any indicator lights going off. . I know our safety is priceless but if us folks are doing the right thing and getting these repairs done, then a recall goes into affect, I would like to see some sort of reimbursement. . . . .

28 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

Brakes went to floor. As I came to a stop light almost hit car in front of me. Originally diagnosed as a bad master cylinder. No warning lights at all. Changed master cylinder and problem was not fixed. Dealership diagnosed it as a bad abs actuator. Was told they would gladly fix it for 2200. 00. Looks like I am not the only one who is having the same problem. Have been told bt local mechanics they see this problem all of the time and Nissan has done nothing about it. Recall needs to be done ASAP.

29 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 11/30/2017

I was driving home from work, travelling at a speed of roughly 35mph. I went over a small bump in the road and went to apply brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. I was able to get off the road without incident. The dealership said I needed a new master cylinder. I replaced it. A week later driving my children to school I was stopping normally when again the brake pedal went to the floor. Now the dealership states their "best guess" to repair is to replace the abs actuator. There is no guarantee this will repair the problem. This was escalated to the level of the Nissan engineer because the dealership (jeff schmitt Nissan in beavercreek, ohio) which is a certified Nissan dealer could not diagnose the problem internally.

30 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 11/26/2017

Brake pedal suddenly got soft and went to the floor as I exited the highway almost causing a rear end collision. Master cylinder was replaced but brakes remain the same with brake pedal going to the floor. After researching on line it appears that the abs control module is to blame but no recall has been issued by Nissan !.

31 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 11/17/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact had to pump the brake pedal numerous times as it traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who replaced the brake master cylinder. In addition, the air bag indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the occupant sensor unit failed. The vehicle was also taken to a dealer (tony Nissan, 94-1299 ka uka blvd, waipahu, hi 96797, (808) 680-7150) for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 08v521000 (air bags, electrical system) and 08v066000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was not available.

32 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 11/15/2017

On 11/15/17 the brake pedal went to the floor on our 2009 Nissan Murano when stopping at an intersection. It was raining at the time. The brakes continued to go to the floor when attempting to stop multiple times for about 2 miles. Turned car off and back on with same result. Towed to our local mechanics who found nothing wrong mechanically but found codes in the abs system. Brake pedal returned to normal function on its own. Mechanics left codes and recommended to take to Nissan dealership. Took to dealership 11/27/17. Dealership stated that the only codes found in abs system were old and did not indicate brake problem. No defects found. Dealership recommended to bring back if it happens again. Problem occurred again, this time in our driveway with snow. Towed the Murano to the dealership on 12/13/17. Description from dealership read, "found brake pedal very soft and low. No leaks found in brake system, no codes found in abs ecu. Brake pressure does not pump up. No air in system and back of master cylinder is dry. Brake booster passes all testing, also pedal is low when car is off, so booster not fault. Internal hydraulic pressure failure in either the master cylinder or abs actuator. Cannot test either component separate. No bulletins, but many reports in database search of abs actuator/s causing this exact problem. " cost $2,481. 53 to replace actuator. Just picked up today and will be very cautious with vehicle having lost confidence in it. It is very concerning that there was nothing to indicate a problem (no alarms, lights, warnings) before this issue occurred both times.

33 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

As I approached a stop, wanting to make a turn , there was a light patch of ice. I applied the brakes normally & pedal sunk to the floor & I almost crashed, luckily there were no other cars in my path. This is a huge safety issue. I am a commercial truck driver & had never heard of losing brakes to this issue before. I properly maintain my cars. Took my 09 Murano to a mechanic. & told me it was most likely the abs module $2000 just the part ,or the master brake cylinder $150 just the part. Replaced the master cylinder. & still not fixed . Problem was the abs module. Nissan needs to do a recall before someone is injured or killed do to this. Even though the main focus is sadly on quarterly numbers gains/losses. I had reached out to Nissan & didnt hear back from them. Guess it wouldve been different if I had said I was looking to buy a car.

34 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

I was driving on a highway at about 55 mph and a deer ran in front of my car. I hit the brakes hard but couldn't stop in time (the deer died) and when I did finally did achieve a stop I noticed my brakes went all the way to the floor. They were very spongy and took a huge distance to stop the car the rest of the drive home, even at speeds under 35 mph. I thought maybe the collision caused damage to my brakes somehow. A mechanic bled my brakes and restored functionality, and carefully inspected everything but could not find any damage. A few weeks later it snowed and when my car slid on some ice while braking into a turn, the brake pedal went to the floor again. I had the brakes bled again and the vehicle thoroughly inspected but again they found nothing. They recommended replacing the master cylinder. Before I could get that work done, another snow caused slippery roads which again caused my brakes to go spongy when braking on a patch of ice. My mechanic recommended I contact Nissan and during my research I found hundreds of complaints for 2009 Nissan Muranos with similar conditions and recommendations to replace the abs hcu (average cost, $2500). Two different Nissan dealers and their corporate reps say they know nothing of the pending NHTSA investigation on this problem.

35 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 10/23/2017

Brakes will go all the way to the floor and at times can not stop the car. They bleeded the brake line and changed the fluid, they replaced the master cylinder and after a month is it acting up again. Now they are telling me is is the abs system. I only have 74000 miles on my car and it should not be happen. This should really be recalled. One day I will get into an accident. I have a few near misses. Thank you.
