1 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2011 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/19/2015

Noise in brakes when going slowly and turning right. Took to my mechanic he let me know this is happening to many 2007-2013 Tundra's and there is a service bulletin on it tsb0013-13 however it is not a recall yet so it is not covered by Toyota. To repair this problem they had to remove the old bearing assemblies, and replace both rear backing plates & bearings, front & back rotors, front & rear pads, which brought this to a grand total of $1,817. 24. My mechanic and the mechanic from the Toyota dealer, where I purchased the truck, informed me that if this procedure was not done the brakes would eventually go out at some point. This is definitely a huge safety risk and I am not sure why this is not considered a recall yet. I urge Toyota to reconsider this problem and qualify it as a recall.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/28/2014

On 08/22/14, I had been to the local Toyota dealership to have my oil changed. I asked them to look at the breaks because there was a terrible vibration and the breaks have not stopped well since I bought the truck. They said the truck needed new breaks, rotors and pads all the way around. I was supposed to take it back on 08/29/14. On 08/28/14 while driving on a clear road with no rain or clouds I went to stop and I pushed the breaks to the floor with both feet and the truck did not stop and I hit another car. I have filed a complaint with Toyota and they finally ordered an inspector to get the black box from my truck. He has not called to schedule this and it is 3 weeks later. I have left message after message. I believe the breaks are faulty with the truck. There is no reason at 9000 miles on a new truck that it should need new breaks, rotors and pad all the way around. Now I am waiting on engineering analysis association to contact me to set up an inspection of my truck. No one is willing to help me get information, not Toyota and not eaa.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2010 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

While driving after braking the truck the vehicle developed a severe vibration throughout the truck. It felt like a loose wheel. After having it to the dealer on two occasions I discovered that the rear brakes had become somewhat frozen in the brake shoe bracket. The pad bracket is made from a metal that road salt blisters and it becomes very rough not letting the brake particularly the inner pad to retract. The shoe is difficult to remove from the bracket and the bracket has to be wired brushed and sanded so that the brake pad can glide easily. Two of my sons also have Toyota Tundra trucks one is a 2010 and the other is a 2014 and have both experienced this same problem and they also had to remove the brakes and sand the bracket. This locking of the pad also ruins the pads causing premature wear and also ruins the inner surface of the rotor. This is dangerous because of the braking ability and the premature wear of the rotor and brake pads.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

Almost uncontrollable vibration when applying brake pressure at speeds greater than 40 mph but the vibration is present at any speed. The problem felt like possibly warped rotors so the rotors and brake pads were replaced with new to no avail. The problem remains at any speed and is very much a safety concern.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

Toyota Tundra brake issue. My truck brakes start to pulse at all speed while attempting to stop. I have inside the last two years replaces three sets of front brake pads and rotors. This is particularly frightening while apply the brakes exiting the freeway on wet roads the brakes don't seem to want to stop the truck in a straight line and the front end has a tendency to jump and drift to one side of the road. I have made several attempts my self having the brakes repaired by qualified mechanic and even to blame the brakes on one mechanic that he did not know what he was doing I have since found that he did know what he was doing he just did knot know about the Toyota Tundra brake issue history as I did not know as well till now. Each time the mechanic blamed it on the driving habits. This is not the case, as the last time I had my brakes worked on was just last year in November and found that the brakes have done the same thing in less time then in the past. In addition the mechanic found that the pulsing of the front end had damaged the front end which cost over $3,000. 00 to fix. Its just now after the Toyota gas peddle issue came to light that I started to do some research and found that this has been happening for over 8 years with the Toyota Tundras all over the country. This is a real issue with the Tundra year 2001.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

7/29/09 driving on the freeway at 65 mph transmission started shifting gear and mph was moving from 60 to 80 up and back down. Applied emergency brake , shifted gear to neutral but no actions could stop the Toyota truck. My nephew and I jumped from the truck when I determined that it was slowing down and no cars were passing on the freeway. It came to a sudden stop 1/2 mile away from were we jumped. The engine had smoke coming out and it revving up and down. Towed it to dealer and they said no problem found and accused it was the floormats after their master tech looked at it. No repairs were made and they wanted to charge us for worn brakes and bent rotors which were cause by this event. In-disagreement we towed to another Toyota and they determined that the complaint regarding the sudden acceleration, worn brake pads, and bent rotors cannot be found. We took back the car for 6 months and a second incident happen 1/15/10. I was driving on a residential street and suddenly the truck was accelerated from 25 mph to 60 mph. I performed all ways to stop the truck but it would not stop. To avoid hitting a big-rig I had to verge into an embankment. Again police and fire dept were called but no one accident occurred so no reports were taken. Again we towed it to the dealer stating the same situation and again no problem has been found. They still have the truck until today 3/9/10 and have not gave any answer on what is had occurred and no actions had been taken. I have suffered tremendously. Fear haunts me at night and I am afraid to even step foot into the truck. I am emotionally disturbed on the ordeal and how Toyota persisted that nothing happened. My 15 year old nephew who jumped out while we were on the freeway has been traumatized and yet I cannot get answer.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/27/2008

Truck was in cruise control. Accelerated to pass slower traffic. Let off throttle. Truck went to full throttle. Could not get truck to decelerate. Had to stand on brakes to bring to a stop. Truck needs new rotors and pads Toyota will not help. Occurred once. The consumer stated the floor mat and gas pedal can interact. When the all weathr mat is not clipped in place, and is moved under the gas pedal, it will become fully depressed. The mat can trap the pedal. Updated 11/13/09 updated 03/29/10.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/02/2008

Original owner of 2001 Toyota Tundra. Needed new front brake pads at 45k miles, needed front rotors turned at 60k miles, performed by Toyota. Now 6k miles later, it needs rotors turned again due to repeat warpage. Toyota has been aware of this design defect, technical service bulletins have been issued, yet no recalls have been issued. Another bulletin was in place for the defective rear brake adjuster, which will not keep rear brakes adjusted over time, causing additional stress on the undersized front brake system. I contacted the national consumer hotline at Toyota. They will not do anything for this problem. The brake system is unsafe. A recall should be issued before someone is injured.

12 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/20/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the brake system has a design flaw. He can depress the brake pedal as hard as possible but the rear brakes do not engage. This failure causes the front brakes to overwork and damage several rotors. The contact changed the brake pads four times in almost four years. The brakes fail more at higher speeds (55 mph) and it is more difficult to stop the vehicle when the road is wet. The current mileage is 88,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.

13 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

Breaks on Toyota Tundras are defective and Toyota knows about it as stated in TSB #br004-02. My front brakes have worn out prematurely. The only reason that I have not experienced the problem sooner is that I mainly use the truck for occasional long distance highway trips. I am experiencing vibration when applying the brakes and they wore out prematurely. Numerous other customers have complained about this issue as well. Based on some of these additional complaints, Toyota is doing everything possible to avoid fixing the problem. . Read more...

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/23/2006

: the contact stated the brake pads and rotors were too small for the vehicle. The rotors were machined three times. The problem reoccurred after only two months. When the brake were applied, the whole front end wobbled and shook. The dealership was made aware of the problem.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/21/2006

Carrying a heavy load in mountain terrain. The front brake rotors rapidly warped, leading to violent shaking, inability to stop and near-loss of control. Brake rotors were turned and pads upgraded to ceramic. Going through the mountains without a load caused the rotors to warp again, once more leading to inability to stop and near-loss of control. The front brake assemblies were completely replaced by pellman's automotive in boulder, CO, with the mechanic stating that the original Tundra brakes were inadequate. Parts unavailable.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

I am the owner of a 2000 Toyota Tundra with dangerous pulsating, vibrating front disc brakes. I first brought this problem to the attention of my dealer on July 31, 2002. The vehicle had 12,894 miles at the time. The warped front rotors were resurfaced and the brake pads replaced. Neither the front rotors nor the calipers were replaced. I was informed at the time that the maximum amount had been machined off the rotors. The problem quickly reappeared and has gradually worsened over the last 16,000 miles. The car is driven very lightly and has towed a horse trailer for approximately 200-300 miles. Today the truck has 28, 600 miles and is very dangerous to drive on any road, but particularly dangerous on longer downhill grades. I brought this to the attention of the dealership early in June 2006 when I had defective oxygen sensors replaced. They checked for recall notices and found none. Curiously, they did not notify me of the technical service bulletin issued in September of 2003. Basically, they said it would cost me a lot of money to have them repaired. In light of the fact that this problem results from defective front brakes, and this defect existed at the time the vehicle left Toyota's possession, I asked Toyota to properly repair the brakes before serious property damage or personal injury occurs. Toyota responded to my request on June 15, 2006 as follows: "we have checked your vehicle identification number (VIN#) and there are no outstanding special service campaigns on your vehicle at this time. The warranty for your braking system (excluding wear items) is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the date of first use for your vehicle. Based on the VIN (vehicle identification number) you provided. Your warranty coverage started on 3/15/2000. Your vehicle is currently outside these warranty parameters and we are unable to assist with the cost of this repair. ".

18 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/28/2006

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The vehicle was purchased in July of 2008. Approximately six months later, the contact noticed that the brakes would pulsate when pressure was applied to the brake pedal. The vehicle was driven to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle had previously been repaired under recall. The mechanic also stated that the ball joints and rotors needed to be replaced. In addition, the ball joints were repaired due to a safety recall, but not the rotors. After the repairs were made, the vehicle was driven to a local repair shop where the rotors and brake pads were repaired. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not under recall for the rotors; therefore, they were not liable for the repairs. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The current mileage was 108,000 and failure mileage was 86,000.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/21/2006

Front brake rotors continually warp on 2002 Toyota Tundra. Have had rotors surfaced two times and replaced pads three times. Brought this up to dealer during warranty period and was informed that this was not a warranty issue.

20 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/17/2005

Please refer to two earlier complaints, conformation # 10137322 & #10137322. There are two complaints filled with your office because one had the in correct brake system ( air brakes). What is the status of this filling please??? thank you louis montagna note in this filling the telephone # is corrected.

21 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

2002 Toyota Tundra developed problems with the brakes. The consumer stated she had the truck fixed several times for vibration, spongy brakes, extended stopping distance and pulling to the right. The dealer continued to replace the drums, resurface the rotors and replace the pads but the problem continued. The right rear axle seal was leaking for the second time.

22 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/30/2005

I read with interest the ap story about problems with brakes on the Toyota prius. The first generation Tundra (2000-2006) has had front brake problems for years (undersized) and Toyota refuses to acknowledge it or issue a recall. The brakes on my 2003 Tundra are horrible. They vibrate and shimmy. I had to replace pads and turn the rotors twice already and the vehicle only has approximately 80,000 miles. My mechanic tells me the entire front brakes need to be replaced as the rotors cannot be turned again. Toyota has issued a technical service bulletin on these brakes TSB br004-02 but that's it, and the suggested fix is very expensive. Check out some of the online forums for more information about this annoying, expensive problem. . Read more...

23 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/16/2005

We bought a used 2002 Toyota Tundra on 6-16-2005 that had 45,134 miles on it. It now has 109,000 miles on it . When we first bought the truck from the dealership, the brakes were replaced before we took it home because we noticed a vibration. Since then, we have replaced the brakes, pads, etc. Twice. We now have to have the vehicle service again because while driving the truck shakes violently at around 40 mph and braking literally shakes the entire truck. It seems highly unreasonable to have to replace the braking system 4 times in three years of ownership. I believe that there is a serious defect in the braking system in the 2002 Toyota Tundra that could lead to accidents causing injury or death. When will Toyota recall these vehicles due to manufacturing defects in their braking system? I am starting the incident date as of the date of purchase since that is when we first had the brakes replaced. I now have to pay more money to have the entire truck braking system corrected again so that we do not end up in harms way. Toyota needs to step up and review all the complaints that have been filed about this complain. Something is wrong with the braking system in this vehicle.

24 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/20/2005

There is vibration in the steering system, when applying brakes most noticable when braking from speeds over 45 mph or on down hills. I have had the brake pads replaced, rotors turned, and the problem returned in a few weeks. I asked Toyota dealership to repair, they refused, the vehicle is out of warranty. I'm the original owner.

25 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/05/2005

I have brake problems. I have less than 36000 and my brake pad needed to be replaced. I have also had a abnormal vibration in the truck when applying the brakes. This has been the case since I purchased the vechilce new. Thought it was normal for the truck but guess not. Toyota is paying for the parts ,and I'm paying for labor to replace rotors, pads, calipers to resolve the issue. Costing me $400.

26 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/15/2005

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra. When applying brakes, particularly when exiting the freeway, the truck shakes violently as if there were an earth quake. It's like nothing else and could not be from operator error. I've recently replaced the pads and the rotors and bled the system but to no avail. The truck still shakes dangerously when slowing, however gently, from speeds in excess of approximately 40 mph.

27 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/16/2004

The front rotors and pads have had to be replaced four times because of vibration. Consumer was involved in a rear end collision because of the brakes.

28 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/10/2004

I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra sr5 model. I am experiencing extreme shuddering in the whole vehicle when applying brakes. This problem was relevant six months and I took it to precision Toyota and they eleviated the problem. Now it is doing it. Again. My rotors are warped (with new balanced tires). I have been researching the internet and have foud that this shaking is prevalent in 200-2002 Toyota Tundras. I understand that Toyota can solve the problem but expects the consumer to pay for a defect that Toyota knows about, installing larger calipers.

29 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/26/2004

I have major vibration when applying my brakes on the 2000 Toyota Tundra. I have had 2 brake jobs done, resurfacing rotors, new pads. The problem reapeared after about 2 weeks. Went back to brake shop and they said there is nothing they can do other than to continue to resurface or replace rotors, calipers, and pads. They also infromed me that they are aware of Toyota service bulletins but, unless you are within the manufacturers warranty, the dealer will not fix the problem. If Toyota acknowledges a defect in parts/design, how come they are not being held accountable for these repairs on vehicles that were manufactured prior to the bulletin releases? please, help us Tundra owners who have been left out in the cold!.

30 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/16/2004

Brake rotors warp and cause severe vibrations. Seems they were not designed for a truck this heavy.

31 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/05/2004

I am 2nd owner of truck for 2 yr. 1st owner had brake shutter on stopping, and took to dealer. They wanted to replace frt pads/surface rotors. They wanted $300. 00 more than anyone to fix. Had brakes replaced at local garage. I bought truck, and had shutter in brakes, called dealer, and they said that after 36k miles they would fix the brakes for $2000-$2500. 00, and now there is a TSB for the rear brakes, and that will cost another $1500. 00. They said that this is not a "Toyota problem", and the customer should bear the cost to fix truck. Truck has 58k miles, and not used for hauling loads. The mfg. Should replace problem parts, and no charge repairs.

32 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/12/2004

I own a Toyota Tundra, 2000, v8, extended cab. One recurring problem is the poor performance of the front brake system. I have 72k miles on the truck and have replaced the brakes, and had the rotors turned 3 times, average every 20k miles. Dealer claims this is not a warranty issue and dealer claims no evidence of a design problem. I have viewed hundreds of similar complaints. Second issue, recent event. After a 4 hour drive the truck shut down. Restarted truck in park and has a rough idle. As soon as the truck is in gear, truck shuts off. Required towing. After sitting for 24hours, truck operates fine. Several mechanics claim torque converter problem. Toyota deal will not fix anything since truck has returned to normal operation. In addition, intermittent slippage of transmission during acceleration between 30 and 40mph. Again, dealer claims nothing can be done since dealer cannot confirm problems. This again indicates a transmission problem. Dealer is team Toyota in langhorne, PA.

33 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/24/2004

The dealer replaced the disc and pads and 22,000 miles. At 32,000 miles the rotors, disc and pads were replaced by the dealership again. The consumer will send a letter providing additional information on this matter. The problem recurred at 70000, the dealer admitted that the brakes were not designed properly.

34 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/01/2004

I bought my Tundra new in 2003. . I bought it to carry the mail as I was informed that it would last longer and hold up better than other makes. . I had to replace the front brake pads the first time at about 15,000 miles but was not to concerned as I use them more heavily than most drivers. . The next time was about 12,000 miles and this time it was shuttering very bad and I replaced the rotors along with new pads. . This has been an on going problem of replacement of parts to elevate the severe shuttering each time thinking I had it fixed. . Today for the first time I find out that this is not only problem that Toyota knew about but possibly have tried to cover because the real fix is very costly ($2000). . They issued a tbs (br004-02) along with 6 or 7 other TSB's about the problems with brakes from year model 2000-2005. . I contacted Toyota and they told me that if I would have brought the vehicle to a dealer before my 36,0000 warranty expired it could have been fixed. . Had I known about the service bulletin I would have taken it to the dealer. . Since the brake parts are not covered under the 36,000 mile warranty I did not take it to the dealer as the first pad replacement seemed to fix the problem. . I was informed that maybe if enough people filed a complaint here that Toyota would be forced to fix a problem that they new about but did not inform owners about to have repaired. .

35 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/21/2003

Brake problems on 2000 Tundra ; this vehicle was purchased new, by myself, in April, 2000. On 5-31-01, at 21,506 miles, I took the vehicle to the dealership for warranty work on the brakes. I had complained of vibrations while braking. The dealership told me they had many such complaints regarding this vehicle. They installed a kit which transferred some of the braking load from the front wheels to the rear, thus reducing the tendency of the rotors to overheat and warp, it was explained to me. They also replaced the pads and shoes, and turned the rotors. The brakes were satisfactory until I had a normal brake-job on 7-14-03, at 62,040 miles, which I had performed at a goodyear shop in lake havasu city, az. The rotors were turned, (for the second time, counting the warentee work) and new pads were installed. By mid-November, at around 65,500 miles, I noticed a pulsating, "grinding" sound eminating from the front end at low speed, which would go away when the brakes were applied. By the end of December, at 67,000 miles, a major vibration has developed in the front end of the vehicle when the brakes are applied. It is so pronounced that I am hesitent to operate the vehicle out of town. From perusing the internet, it is apparent that many Tundra drivers are having the same problem; it would seem that a design flaw exists in the braking system of this otherwise fine automobile. I ask that this agency look into the matter and mandate corrective action on the part of Toyota, if deemed proper. Thank you. Alan k. Whitney officer, arizona highway patrol (ret. ).
