1 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/20/2020

Trailer brake controller does not work and it almost caused a crash. Now it does not even shows up on display as if truck is not even equipped with this module. Extremely scary and dangerous when towing 6000ib behind you and your trailer brakes fail to engage. Internet is bussing with Tundra owners with same issue.

2 Brakes Failed problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

The park brake system uses cables to expand the rear brake shoes. The shoes are expanded using a bellcrank and bracket. When the park brake pedal is depressed, the cable pulls the bellcrank and expands the shoes. The bellcrank and bracket use a pivot pin. The entire assembly - bellcrank, bracket and pin suffer extraordinary rust. The rust causes the park brake to fail to release. The rear brakes drag, and cause: * premature wear of rear brakes * loss of fuel economy * shutter and shaking from the rear * avoiding use of park brake system to avoid the problem, folks don't use the park brake. None of the drivers of our Toyota Tundra uses the park brake because of the the problems it causes. That's a safety issue. Apparently this is a well known problem with Toyota Tundras. . Read more...

3 Brakes Failed problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

I was in motion and driving on a residential street, while operating vehicle at the time of accident. After the collision, the airbag did not deploy. The takata airbag was replaced by the auto manufacturer (Toyota dealership) prior to my above mentioned accident. The auto accident occurred for unknown reasons, possibly brake failure or unexpected acceleration of the car engine.

4 Brakes Failed problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/02/2017

This is the second time within the last several weeks where I've had brake-line failure(also reported my first one here). My vehicle was just recently repaired under warranty at the dealership I bought it from for a catastrophic brake-line failure which nearly resulted in a major accident. After the repair to the exploded lines my dealer stated he inspected the remaining lines under the truck & said they all looked good & there shouldn't be anymore problems with the lines failing. That didn't happen however as I just had another line spring a sudden leak without any warning while driving to work. My vehicle is now off its warranty(only been 1500 miles since repair-79,000 miles on it now) so I cannot send it back to them. It wasn't a sudden, complete loss of brakes this time but a gradual softening of the brake pedal when trying to stop until all of the fluid was gone then I had next to nothing upon arrival to work. Anyhow, I did make it to work & then put more fluid in it to get it home when I got off shift. Upon searching for the leak I was surprised to notice that the lines had broken where there was no rusting involved, it turns out there's a mounting bracket which once had a grommet in it that either fell out or rotted away causing the bracket to cut through the lines under it from metal-to-metal contact. The lines involved looked as though they'd been cut with a knife at the location. The dealer never would've noticed this as it took me almost 30 minutes to find it myself. I did contact Toyota however they choose to do nothing about this however since I've had two sudden brake failures within 4,500 miles I feel I should let someone know before someone else gets the same problem and kills themselves or others when their brakes decide to fail without warning! thank-you!.

5 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/23/2016

While backing out of a parking spot, this vehicle failed to stop when I placed my foot on the brakes causing the vehicle to hit another parked vehicle. When the police office commanded me to remove my vehicle and park it inside a parking spot, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle again, leading to another auto accident.

6 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/02/2016

Truck is rated to tow 9100lbs, and includes an integrated trailer brake controller for use with electric trailer brakes (which is new for 2016 Tundra's). The first time I hooked the truck up to the trailer, I set up the trailer brakes using the owners manual. After pulling out onto the street I immediately noticed that when I pressed the brakes the trailer brakes failed to engage. My trailer weighs nearly 8000lbs. Luckily, the manual slider works to engage the trailer brakes, but even on a gain setting of 10 (max) the foot brake fails to adequately engage the brakes on my trailer. I have tried 2 other trailers, and talked to multiple 2016 Tundra owners online and this problem is consistent across all Tundra's towing any type trailer. Under hard brakng at any speed my trailer wants to jacknife and push the truck out of it's way, because the brakes on the truck are engaging to max and the trailer brakes are hardly engaging at all even on max gain setting. This is a serious issue that needs to be resolved and Toyota is not coming forward with a fix. They claim the controller is "working as designed", but I tow 8000lbs behind me and without adequate trailer brakes a serious accident is just waiting to happen. Someone needs to step in and force Toyota to address this serious issue before someone is hurt or killed. Luckily the manual slider still works, but that is a bandaid solution every Tundra owner can't be expected to drive around manually applying the trailer brakes separate from the foot brake. If I can stop my trailer faster when manually applying the trailer brakes than the truck will stop with just the foot brake, than something is obviously defective! in what scenario would Toyota ever want my truck to stop less quickly in a max braking situation? it doesn't make sense, and they need to come up with a solution!.

7 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/05/2016

The integrated brake trailer controller to control the brakes on a trailer is not working. The brake controller fails to control the brakes on the trailer while in "electric" mode for electric brakes. It is very dangerous to rely on a brake controller to slow or stop a vehicle that is towing a load with trailer brakes that are not working. I towed our camper this last weekend with my entire family in the car and it was very dangerous to my family and others on the road.

9 Brakes Failed problem of the 2015 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

Parking brake began to fail at holding my Tundra stationary in my driveway (which is approximately a 16% grade) at 10,892 miles. First service complaint Toyota found the parking brake to be operational but adjusted it. On my way home, this adjustment caused the left parking brake shoe to heat up and stick causing a 'death wobble'. Vehicle towed to dealer. Toyota of nwa was able to replicate the failure during a test drive to a road of equal grade as my driveway. Parking brake shoes were replaced and inside of rotors machined. Parking brake operated normally for only a few weeks then began to fail again. Toyota sent a specialist to evaluate the failure. After spending only 2 hours inspecting and testing on a ramp, dealer stated parking brake operating normally but adjusted the cable from 12-13 clicks to 8-9 clicks. Parking brake began to fail two days later and parking brake pedal travel takes 15 clicks to the floor and my Tundra still rolls when in neutral with the parking brake engaged. Metal popping and clanking sounds coming from rear end after parking brake is engaged, transmission is shifted into 'park' and vehicle is turned off. The parking brake failure poses a safety risk for serious injuries and even death to my family as my house is at the bottom of my driveway. Demand letter for refund sent to Toyota.

12 Brakes Failed problem of the 2014 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

The parking brake when fully applied, began failing to hold the vehicle in place a week after purchase. The parking brake has been adjusted twice by the dealer. The parking brake petal while fully pressed to the floor, does not appear strong enough to hold the vehicle in place, especially when parked on a hill. The dealer tried to adjust the parking brake tighter during a warranty repair on 7/25/2015 . As a result, the brakes locked up while driving away from the dealership. The parking brake was readjusted again by the dealership that day to it's normal position. The parking brake continues to fail to hold the vehicle in place.

14 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

Brake pedal went to floor. Brakes had worked fine when vehicle was parked. When I started the vehicle, there was no warning light on dash, no indication that brake booster assembly (Toyota part number 470500c03) had failed or was failing. Vehicle was towed to dealership and showed diagnostic codes c0200,215 and 1223. Dealer confirmed no warning lights to indicate this catastrophic brake failure. Under different traffic or driving conditions, this could have been a serious or fatal event. This vehicle has been serviced only by the Toyota dealership where it was purchased new, at every recommended interval, and never missed any scheduled maintenance. I contacted Toyota customer service today at 800-331-4331 (ref #[xxx])and was told they had no record of similar complaints. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

17 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

Brake failure on 2000 Toyota Tundra caused by excessive rusting of frame, cross member and proportioning valve mount. Lost all braking ability when exiting i89 southbound exit 18 in georgia, vermont. Narrowly avoided a vehicle stopped in front of me and another oncoming vehicle at the intersection of i89 and us route 7. I reported this event to Toyota that same morning and was issued a case number. Advised to contact local Toyota dealer for immediate inspection. Inspection revealed conditions listed at beginning of this statement and significant flaking/loss of metal on main rails of frame. Told by service manager that truck could not be repaired without inspection of vehicle by Toyota regional rep. The following Monday (brake failure occurred on the preceding Friday), local dealer provided me with a rental vehicle and advised me that the end decision on my vehicle was to replace the cross member and proportioning valve. Vehicle had not been inspected by regional rep. And service manager could not provide me with an estimated completion date for the work due to lack of a part number for the cross member. I learned of prior knowledge of this problem by Toyota and others when researching on the internet. Also learned that recall notices were to be mailed nlt end of January 2010 (Toyota statement). Toyota rep admitted this was not done and recall letters have still not gone out to owners.

19 Brakes Failed problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

2002 Toyotas Tundra sr5 extended cab: on Sunday 8/15/09 brakes failed and I evacuated vehicle because of smoke coming out of engine compartment. Vehicle towed to repair shop, mechanic discovered that rack and pinion had rusted through and brake fluid caused the smoke as it burned on the engine block. The break lines did not fail it was a hole in the assembly through which the brake fluid escaped. Very serious incident that could have resulted in an accident has it occurred while driving at speed, incident occurred while I was leaving my driveway. I called Toyota on 8/21/09 to report failure and find out if there was recall, number called, 800-331-4331 ext 5, ref number for call 0908132654. Toyota informed me that there was no recall. I am reporting this incident now, 11/25/09, in light of the recent recall for rusting frame member. My loss a brakes resulted from the corrosion of a component that my mechanic was surprised to see fail. This was a first during his 15 years working as a mechanic.

20 Brakes Failed problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/27/2009

The brakes failed to disengage the cruise control and the vehicle continued to gain in speed as I was exiting the freeway. I turned the ignition off and tried to navigate a left turn at 70+ mph. With the rear end hopping somehow I negotiated the turn but could not turn again. I crossed the next street and ended up going thru the wall of an apartment building and stopped in the middle of the living room. It was only god's design for me not to die this day. Had I not made the first turn I was going to run into a small grove of mature trees. Also, if any other cars had been on the street I could not have avoided them. Luckily the single mother of 3 small children were not in the living room.

21 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/18/2008

Bought my 2000 Tundra 6 years ago, I have had it in the shop every 6 months for brake work, I have had a total of 3 sets of rotors on it, about every 12k miles the vehicle shakes badly when braking. It is now in the shop again today and shop says it needs rotors again. I do not understand how everyday normal driving cause the brake system to fail. I understand this is a widespread problem with the Toyota Tundra and brake systems.

22 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/25/2008

Premature front rotor and brake system failure. Front rotors are engineered to thin causing severe warping with strong possibility for complete failure. Standard manufacturer pars last 2,000 to 6,000 miles before failure.

23 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/23/2008

I recently purchased a 2000 Toyota Tundra and had no idea of the problems to come. I had an accident with the Tundra, who's brakes failed to stop the truck. I was able to quickly use the emergency brakes, but made no difference. I hit and damaged my garage door. I did some research and found out that many complaints have been filed because of brake problems on the Tundra. I also found out that I have to spent a lot of money to repair or replace the brake system. I am very disappointed with Toyota not being able to help resolve this important problem. I have two children and my wife who's life is at stake now. We have been using the truck quite extensively, but for now, the truck is in park until we decide what to do with it. I believed in Toyota living up to their name, but now. I lost confidence in their product. Toyota has failed to take into serious consideration the safety of my family.

27 Brakes Failed problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/18/2005

I bought my 2001 Toyota Tundra in febuary of 2005. When ide bought the brakes where in good shape. After just 3 months of driving my truck started shaking violently when applying the brakes at higher speeds (30-55mph). I took it to a mechanic and he said that the brakes were shot and that the rotors were in need of turning. I proceeded with the repairs and was back on the road again till two nights ago. My family and I were coming home after sunset when a cow darted out in the middle of the road. I acted quickly and veired only to find that the brakes didnt work causing me to loose control of my truck. I was able to regain control by knowing the proper procedures from a defensive driving course ide taken when my occupation was as a firefighter but I still came in contact with the animal in the road due to the brake failure. Ive since taken the truck back to my mechanic and the brakes and rotors are shot once again. He said the exceedingly rapid ware of the brakes and rotors came from a malfunction on the rear brakes which in turn causes over strain on the front brakes resulting in premature break failure. Ive searched the internet and if your staff can possibly do the same they'll find that this has been a terribly common problem in the Toyota Tundras year model 2000 through 2004. Ive recently started circulating a petition for others that have had these problems with their Toyota to accumulate proof that the problem has exsisted for some time now and that it has happened in an extremly large number of the Toyota Tundras. Their are countless testimonies of people with the same problems and have tried going to the manufacturer only to get the run around or just simply ignored. Toyota is in violation of manufacturing defective vehicles and selling them to the public with no concern what so ever for the safety and concern of there customers or the people that they share the roadways with.

28 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/08/2005

Dt:the contact owned a 2000 Toyota Tundra. Ever 15,000 mile brakes had to be replaced, including the rotors twice. The contact stated that vehicle vibrated. The contact was afraid that vehicle will hit somebody because of brake failure. The manufacturer told him that they were aware of the problem. However, they will not do anything because warranty expired. The contact stated he did not haul heavy loads with this vehicle, and could not understand why the brakes failed. Had the brakes replaced five times with only 67,000 miles on the vehicle. The first time contact took the vehicle to dealer he thought it was the tires.

29 Brakes Failed problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/14/2005

Due to premature corrosion (vehicle 4 years old) parking brake failed to function, failed nys inspection, was repaired (03/14/2005). Due to premature corrosion, spring broke, was repaired (01/02/2008). Power steering rack rotted, had to be replaced. Approx mileage 150,000. Front suspension links rotted out. Called Toyota (04/15/2009) voiced our concern for rotting frame, no recall at that time. They issued a complaint #. Took vehicle to dealer for inspection for three recalls, a0f, b0d, 90m on 05/02/2012. Inspection not properly done, chunks of rust still can be flaked off, possible holes behind, but they sprayed crc over top of the loose scaling, covering over the problems. We had no choice in what they were doing with our property. We took it in for an inspection. After said inspection, if it would not get a new frame, we would have opted to take it home, removed all loose scaling prior to the crc being applied. We were not given any options, our vehicle was already on the way to their collision shop for the work. This would have accomplished two things; the dealership would know without a doubt that there were no holes and the crc would stick directly to the frame minimizing future corrosion (that is the objective of the recall afterall) I called Toyota corporate and voiced my concern with a spray covering over the problem, and the truck not being safe. My case is still pending, but based on the initial call back from the case manager, it is not looking like there will be a resolution in our favor, we will see. My concern is, how many of these Toyota dealers are not thoroughly inspecting these trucks, spraying over the problems and putting these vehicles back on the roads. How safe is that?.
