1 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/30/2005

Excessive vibration in brakes. My 2001 Toyota Tundra has excessive vibration in my brakes. I have had the front rotors changed twice, and the rear drums changed twice, I have changed the pads and shoes twice also. It wont go away. Toyota posted a recall for it but will only repair it if the vehicle is under warranty. The average cost for this repair is around $1700. I think that Toyota should step up to the plate and take care of this.

2 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/21/2004

Vehicle has excessive vibration/shaking when braking, especially downhill, and most notably at speeds between 40-50 mph. Repair attempts have been made at 20,341 miles and 24,312 miles replacing calipers, rotors and drums, as well as attempts at resurfacing badly warped rotors/drums. Condition still exists at current mileage of 28,128 miles. Fear that this is a dangerous condition that will result in loss of handling, control, traction or may lead to an accident if brakes fail to stop the vehicle. As this also does not appear to be an isolated case, this condition is likely to affect vehicle reputation and (re-sale) value as well.

3 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

The consumer complained about a brake problem. At first the front brakes caused the vehicle to shutter when they were applied. Then the brakes faded out, causing the vehicle to not stop in time. The consumer felt that the weight of the vehicle was too much for the brakes. The consumer found that the problem was due to the brakes wearing out too quickly. The front brakes have been replaced once under warranty. Also, the rotors and pads were replaced. The problem first started in June 2004 and at 15,000-20,000 miles. The problem almost caused several accidents. The manufacturer issued five technical service bulletins (TSB) for the front brakes. They had a brake upgrade available for the vehicle. They refused to fix the vehicle under warranty. (11/15/05).

4 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/23/2004

I am the original owner of a 2000 Toyota Tundra sr5 access cab 4x4 with 34,700 miles on it. At approximately 30,000 miles, I began noticing moderate pulsation/vibration when applying brakes, especially from speeds over 50 mph. At 34,000 miles, I took the vehicle to a midas shop in phoenix, az, who told me I had 60%+ wear left on my brakes before they needed replacing, but suggested that machining the brake rotors would eliminate said vibration. This was done, but two weeks later the vibration returned. As this seemed very unusual to me, I began investigating and found that there seem to be thousands of complaints from other Tundra owners describing the exact same problem I am experiencing. Also discovered was the fact that Toyota has issued numerous technical service bulletins on this problem which indirectly indicate that it produced the vehicle with brakes that were not strong enough to hold up to the heat generated on this vehicle. Some customers are having their brake components replaced with better ones at no charge. Comparatively, Toyota service departments in my area have been very uncooperative. At best, they are replacing some parts, but require that I pay the labor. I believe this is a fundamental design flaw as opposed to a minor inconvenience, as brakes that do not hold up under normal wear pose a major safety concern. Also, consumers should not have to pay to have manufacturers' hazardous design defects fixed, regardless of warranty period.

5 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/07/2003

I too have the same braking problems as every one else. I now have 65,000 miles and have had rotors turned once and just installed new front rotors. Also replaced front and rear brakes. Now Toyota say the will do the TSB for a $200. 00 deductible. I want it done for nothing. I won't stop until they do it right.

6 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/30/2003

My 2000 Toyota Tundra has a recurring brake issues that have been ignored by the dealership in nc, as well as corporate Toyota. I have had the front rotors machined in the past while the intermittent rear brake lock up has been chalked up as "unable to reproduce" by the dealer. So, to this day it has gone unrepaired. At this time, Toyota tells me that all of my braking components need to be replaced; however, they will only pay for 50% of the costs ($2500. 00), since my warranty has now expired even though I have only 34,000 miles on my truck. The Tundra's brakes have been well documented as having severe problems, but a recall has not been issued. I feel this truck is unsafe and I will not subject my family members to such a vehicle.

7 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/30/2003

Repeated problems with brake vibration on 2000 Toyota Tundra. Repairs completed per TSB's by Toyota dealership in 2001 under warranty. Brake vibration problem returned less than 15,000 miles later. This is a very serious problem that affects the performance of the brakes. This should be a recall effort by Toyota before someone is injured due to brake failure.

18 Brake Foundation Components problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/24/2001

I have a 2000 Tundra with about 28,000 miles. It vibrates when the brakes are applied. The brakes have been repaired four times starting at about 8,000 miles; however, the problem recurred. The dealer told me the front rotors have been replaced twice. They have not been replaced. They were grounded three times. Toyota issued a front brake technical service bulletin (TSB) on 03/10/2000 applicable to the 2000 Tundra. Toyota issued a rear brake TSB on 10/17/2000 applicable to the 2000 and 2001 Tundra. Toyota issued a rear brake TSB on 09/16/2002 applicable to the 2000, 2001 and 2002 Tundra. Toyota issued a front brake TSB on 09/16/2002 applicable to the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 Tundra. According to Toyota written information the front brake problem has a defective caliper assemblies. The rear problem is brake drums with insufficient mass and defective adjusters. (I got TSB and repair manual information on techinfo. Toyota. Com after a $50 subscription fee. ) I presented all this to Toyota's dispute settlement mechanism under the magnuson-moss warranty act (15 u. S. C. Sections 2301-2312 and 16 cfr section 703). The mechanism is administered by national center for dispute settlement (ncds). The Toyota representative admitted during the hearing that the brakes were non-conforming/defective. The arbitration process was grossly flawed. Most defective was the arbitrator based his decision on a non-applicable state law instead of the magnuson-moss warranty act. Ncds told him to consider the non-applicable law. Magnuson-moss is very specific if they can't fix it after a reasonable number of attempts; they replace it or buy it back with no depreciation. Toyota's California executive office position is since NHTSA has not issued a recall, the vehicles are still usable and magnuson-moss does not apply. Nhtsa should do something about the above.
