1 Brake Disc problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

Breaks on Toyota Tundras are defective and Toyota knows about it as stated in TSB #br004-02. My front brakes have worn out prematurely. The only reason that I have not experienced the problem sooner is that I mainly use the truck for occasional long distance highway trips. I am experiencing vibration when applying the brakes and they wore out prematurely. Numerous other customers have complained about this issue as well. Based on some of these additional complaints, Toyota is doing everything possible to avoid fixing the problem. . Read more...

3 Brake Disc problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/25/2005

There was a severe vibration in my front brakes when driving with my pickup bed loaded with wood and coming down a hill. Also, happened to a lesser extent when pickup bed was empty and coming off the freeway on a downslope. Had my brakes serviced, and was advised of TSB br004-02. Front brake calipers, backing plates, brake hoses, wheel bearings, oil seals and flange bolts were replaced. Because the vehicle is out of warranty I had to pay over $2,000 plus tax. I feel this is wrong due to TSB should be a recall. There is obvious design fault in the sizing of the calipers.

4 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/10/2004

Front brake rotors are severely warped after just moderate use. This causes the vehicle to vibrate violently when stopping. When slowing from high speeds, this leads to loss of control of vehicle. New calipers, brake pads, rotors, and probably bearigs will be required to repair.

5 Brake Disc problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/09/2004

Manufacturer refuses to service faulty brake system while under warranty - 2002 Toyota Tundra 2/03-I took my 2002 Toyota Tundra to a dealership in scottsdale, az (right Toyota) with concern over brake pulsation. The mileage on my vehicle was 32,000 miles. The dealer informed me that my truck was due for a 30,000 mile service interval and checking brakes was normal procedure. I received an invoice noting my front brakes were 90% worn & rear brakes were 40% worn. The dealership offered to replace the front pads for $400. I declined and had my brakes serviced elsewhere 1/13/04-I took my truck to a second dealership in phoenix, az (camelback Toyota) for the 60,000 mile service interval. The dealer performed the service and in the process of checking the brakes noted the entire brake system should have been replaced due to two technical service bulletins (#br004-02; #br003-02) the condition of the rotors and drums were warped, with excessive wear. The dealer wanted to replace the brake system. They said that the required service should have been performed under warranty with the tsbs. The mileage limit on those tsbs was 3 years or 36,000 miles. Since I was over the mileage requirement, yet had originally brought my truck in for this exact problem prior to 36,000 miles Toyota offered to cover the parts if I paid the $1,100. 00 in labor. I refused because this problem was alerted to Toyota prior to 36,000 and was mis diagnosed as worn pads I called Toyotas corporate services number at 800-331-4331 with all the details of this case. They have refused assistance. Toyotas internal reference number for this is 200401090758. I have documentation (the 30kmile service invoice) that notes I had brake issues prior to the expiration of the TSB warranty covering the brakes. It has been provided to camelback Toyota, and the factory is aware of the issue, yet they still refuse to honor their own policy for replacing a brake system that is unsafe.

6 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/07/2003

At just over two years ownership of my 2000 Tundra (in oct 2002), I began to notice a vibration when I applied the brakes. Not recognizing the problem as a warranty issue, I took my truck to a local repair shop. They indicated that the front discs were probably warped and that turning them would do the trick. After the front brake job, the problem remained. I then tried new tires and a wheel alignment with no improvement. It was after all of this that I learned that this is a Tundra-wide problem. When I inquired with Toyota to have the repairs covered under my warranty, they indicated that they would not help in the cost of my repairs because I was over the 36,000 miles of my warranty. With four technical service bulletins issued on this matter prior to oct 2002 (and one just after), Toyota knew they had a Tundra brake problem. Considering the seriousness of a flawed braking system, I believe, Toyota had a moral obligation to immediately notify all Tundra owners of their defective brakes. If Toyota had done so in a responsible and timely manner, this matter would have been resolved prior to the expiration of the 36,000 mile portion of my warranty. It was only through their gross negligence that it was not. From what I understand, the entire braking system, both front and rear, was not engineered properly. I further understand that repairs are to be accomplished with replacement parts that are not the vehicles original parts. This clearly indicates that my brake problem is not due to normal wear and tear but is due directly to a defectively designed brake system. I request that this matter be fully investigated and if its determined that Toyota marketed a defective vehicle, they should be held fully and solely responsible for all necessary repairs, regardless of warranty expiration.

9 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/24/2002

Major brake pulsation, especially when slowing down at freeway speeds to exit. Dealer has replaced the front pads, front rotors, rear shoes, rear drums, rear star wheel automatic adjusters. This is the third time since the truck was new that the brakes have started pulsating so bad that I'm becoming afraid to drive the truck at freeway speeds. Toyota's TSB to fix the problems doesn't last any longer than 5,000 miles. Ts.

10 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/12/2002

Brakes vibrate and truck shakes bad, dealer says they will charge me to turn rotors and put in new pads. After going to your web site I see that there are alot of complaints on the same vehicle about the exact same problem. This is not safe and I would like an update on the fix for the problem please. 22 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/10/2001

I have taken my vehicle in on (3) separate occasions for the problems with the brake system. They refuse to fix it. There have been (2) bulletins both sent to you and the dealerships regarding the brake systems. I have read on the internet about several people having the same problem. If this is not fixed it can be a safety related issue. I feel this is a defective system and Toyota should have to replace it at no charge to the owner.

Front disc brakes have to be changed every five thousand miles since date of purchase. Dealer has been contacted.

24 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

25 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/15/2001

Moderate to heavy vibration when braking at freeway speeds. Low vibration when braking at lower speeds, 40 or less. Toyota has replaced the brakes twice and will do it again on Monday 9/10/01. This is no gurantee that the problem will be fixed. Several other 2000 and 2001 tunrda suffer from the same defect. Toyota repeats that this is a anoyance and not a safety issue. All tunrda owners regard it as a safety issue, due to the fact this defect has to do with the brake system. The actual cause of the vibration is warping of the rotors when they heat. Some Tundras have had problems with the rear brakes, but its limited.

26 Brake Disc problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

31 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/29/2001

Brakes vibrate/pulse and steering wheel "shimmies violently when brakes are applied at speeds above 40 mph. Veh can be difficult to control. This is a common problem that Toyota is aware of yet they replace defective parts with defective parts rather than coming up wioth a re-design and true fix. This is a safety issue and if nothing is done, lives will be lost as this veh is sold to more and more people.

32 Brake Disc problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/27/2001

I own a 2001 Toyota Tundra sr5 extra cab 4x4. At 15392 miles I began feeling a shutter/vibration from my brakes when braking at speeds above 40 miles an hour. I took it to the dealer who said he had one other vehicle with the same problem. They stated that the truck warped the rear drums and front rotors. After repairing the problem, I have gone between 500-4000 miles between the problem occurring again. In each instance, the dealership has replaced the defective part under warranty but can't fix the problem. I was told by the dealership that there is no safety problem and that the only thing I feel is the warped drums and rotors. I am worried about the safety of utilizing this truck as I would think that over time as the calipers keep getting pushed back that this will deteriorate then braking mechanism. I am currently scheduled for a new vehicle arbitration board on Tuesday March 12, 2002. According to the representative from Toyota, this problem is due to my exessive/heavy use and is normal wear and tear on the equipment. This truck is used mostly to commute to work and during the winter I tow a snowmobile trailer that only weighs 2000 lbs loaded. I don't know of any brake parts that are supposed to wear out, or even warp in that short of time no matter what the vehicle is used for. Toyota has TSB's about this problem but they don't seem to correct it. Please help with any information possible.

33 Brake Disc problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

On 06/15/2001 my 2000 Toyota Tundra received warranty repairs as follows: replaced front rotors, front pads, rear drums, rear brake shoes, rear parking brake adjustment strut kits on both wheels. All work was necessary due to vibration during braking above 40 mph. Classic Toyota in round rock, texas did the warranty work and told me there was a TSB calling for the replacement of the parking brake adjustment struts. Additionally, I was told this action would fix the vibration problems. My brakes operated smoothly for approx. 3,000 mi. My truck once again vibrates during braking conditions above 40 mph. This condition causes excessive vibrations that pose safety concerns, most especially in wet or hazardous driving conditions. I have spoken with the service department at classic Toyota in round rock, texas and they have indicated there are other customers with repeat brake issues similar to mine. I inquired about a permanant solution issue from Toyota and was told there isn't any information to support this. I frequent a Tundra owners' website and have discovered this is a wide-spread problem. I am concerned about how long Toyota will continue to replace affected brake parts before claiming it a wear issue. Additionally, I am concerned about how this matter will be handled when my warranty expires. Assistance with this issue would be appreciated. Sincerely, scott esau.
