Volkswagen Passat owners have reported 57 problems related to air bag not deploy (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Passat based on all problems reported for the Passat.
The air bag inoperative light illuminated in the dashboard display. All steering wheel electrical functions including horn, display control for items such as speed display stopped working, radio control, and phone control eased to function. There was a grinding noise coming from inside the steering wheel when I turned the wheel. I took the car to the dealer. The dealer said it is a known issue concerning the steering wheel clock spring and vw has known about this for years and has issued an extended warranty. However, vw has the parts on back order and is not supplying the parts to fix the problem in a timely fashion as it should with an emergency safety condition. I called vw of America to report this. They gave me a case number. They then sent me an email a week later saying they would get back to me in a month to let me know the status. This is negligent and unacceptable. This is not a dealership issue. Vw is not supplying the part to fix the airbag system. This is a safety issue. Thousands of cars are affected, not just mine. The airbag system is inoperative and in the case of an accident the airbag will not deploy. Just like the takata airbag scenario, this should be acted on immediately before someone is seriously hurt or killed because vw will not fix a known safety issue with their air bag system.

My 2014 vw Passat turbo has an issue with no horn, nothing on steering wheel works and air bag light is on the dash. The local vw dealship moses vw of barbroursville, wv told me the air bag will not deploy at this time bc the clock spring needs replaced. Vw reps told me it is not a recall just an extention of warranty to 120,000 miles. My car has 131,000 of course. My wife drives this car and was almost in a bad wreck bc she had no horn and the bag will not deploy which is very scary. How is this not a recall? I have an appt to have it replaced at moses but I want this changed to a recall. It is a complete safety issue. I hold a masters degree in safety myself and am very concerned not just for myself but for others. I love the vehicle other than this issue. Enter message.

Passat was traveling south when another vehicle ran a stop sign, turned north into the southbound lane, and hit Passat on passengers side front causing car to spin and come to a stop when it hit front center into a light pole. Seatbelts did not lock, airbags did not deploy, even though all recalls had been done in September. Passat was completely totaled. Insurance adjuster and mechanics advised us that airbags should have deployed. Driver of Passat was injured due to failure of safety features.
Daughter was killed in a head on collision in her 2011 Volkswagen cc when her airbag did not deploy. She purchased the vehicle from a dealer on October 30th, 2018, 5 months prior to the crash. She was traveling the posted speed limit on a county 2 lane road when another vehicle hit her head on. The attached photograph is her car after the crash. As you can see, the airbag 100% should have deployed in that crash.

Airbag warning light comes on dash when driving. It appears to only come on while driving on the highway at over 50 mph. I have had current takata recall warranty work completed already. Volkswagen said this is a separate issue and would not cover under recall warranty. Specifically, they said the air bags will not deploy while this warning light is on if involved in an accident.
Takata recall. I received a recall from vw for the takata airbag. In the description, on cars. Com, it says "in the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag. Consequence a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury. " this is exactly what has happened to my vehicle. Nothing on my steering wheel works, not even my horn. I went to vw, and they replaced the takata air bag, but did not replace the broken clock spring because they say my car was not included in the recall for the clock spring. I think this is a major safety concern. I was told that my driver side airbag will not deploy in the event of an accident. One of the reasons I purchased this car was for the airbags and the safety features. How is there not a recall on my vehicle. It did exactly what said "may happen. ".
I was in my drive way and started my car when the air bag malfunction light came on in my car. At that point the horn, cruise control, phone, and radio functions all stopped working on my steering wheel. I looked in my owner manual and it said to call the dealership immediately. When I called - the vw dealership I normally go to said it would be 2-3 weeks before they could get me in. I asked if the vehicle was safe to drive and they, of course, would not tell me "yes or no. " only to find out later that the entire time I was driving with this light on - my airbags would not have deployed if I were in an accident. I have 2 children and if we were in a wreck and me or one of my children were injured due to my airbags not working -- vw would have a lawsuit on their hands. It is a matter of time before this occurs. So,I took my vehicle to an authorized vw dealership. After running a diagnostic on the car - I was told that the steering wheel clock spring was faulty. I left the car to be repaired. While I was without my vehicle (one week due to having to order parts, etc. ) I researched the issue. I was excited to see that vw had issued a recall in Aug. 2015 for the steering wheel clock spring. Unfortunately, it is only for 2010-2014 Passat. My Passat is considered a 2015; however, the production date is Dec. 2014. I was told at the dealership that I would have to pay for this repair out of pocket because my car was not covered under the recall. I contacted vw care center and even emailed several managers from the corporate location. My emails were never answered and the customer care center said there was nothing they could do. I am left with paying over $500 in repairs and almost $200 for the rental car I had to get for the 7 days my car was at the dealership. I would like to know why my car is not covered under the recall when it has the exact same issues.

All steering wheel functions have stopped working including the horn. The airbag icon shows an "error" message. The steering wheel makes a cracking sound when it turns. Identical problem as in the NHTSA investigation #pe15010. I am concerned that the airbag will not deploy in the event of an accident. Problem appears to steering wheel clock spring/steering column control module (sccm). Dealer wants over $ 500 to replace it. The car has less than 58,000 miles and was purchased brand new in 2012.
Driver steering column airbag did not deploy during a severe crash.
Vehicle air bag light illuminated as well as informed us on the information cluster horn no longer works and none of the steering wheel push button controls work dealer said it was a broken clock spring and that we needed to bring it in immediately because the air bags would not deploy correctly potentially the online forums that I've looked for information stated that multiple vehicles with this amount of miles have the same exact problem I was just curious why there wasn't a recall coming if the airbag potentially doesn't work.
My daughter was hit in an accident that crushed the front end of the vehicle jamming the front doors and the air bags failed to deploy. This causes great concern that the air bags are faulty in the 2013 vw Passat. The car was so severely damaged she had to crawl out the back doors of the car as the engine was shoved in.
I would like to bring to your attention an issue that is happening with my 2007 Volkswagen Passat 2. 0t. The car¿s airbag fault indicator light is on indicating that the air bag will not deploy if in an accident. I had an independent car mechanic investigate the issue and he informed me that the air bag fault is indicative of a bad sensor. I have an appointment with keffer Volkswagen in huntersville north carolina to accurately diagnose the issue on 8/1/2014. I called Volkswagen (703-364-7000) on 7/25/2014 and spoke with a customer advocate to file a formal complaint and ask them if they would cover the cost of the repairs. Since it is a safety issue and the issue has close proximity to the harness recall from 3 years ago I expected them to cover it. (I had the harness rewired with the new harness as a part of that recall. ) Volkswagen told me that they would not cover the cost of the diagnosis or repairs due to the age of the vehicle. Case # 140556249. I have concerns because I know this is a bigger issue and not just a problem with my car. I have provided some screen prints of other Volkswagen owners complaining of the same problems. Several drivers have been in accidents where the airbags did not deploy. Drivers are concerned about the airbag not deploying during an accident and of the air bag deploying while driving. I also have the same concerns and I believe that this issue should be investigated as a design flaw / defect that could lead to a larger safety recall. If Volkswagen is to fix the issue with the same parts will the issues continue to persist? this is deeply concerning, especially when an employee at huntersville north carolina informed me that parts and labor are only covered under warranty for one year after the repairs. Will I be paying for this same repair over and over again? your urgent attention and response is expected.

On 4/92014 the air-bag warning light came on when I started the car. Manual states that this indicates the air bags may not deploy when they should but that they might deploy randomly while the car was driven. I took the car to open road vw in manhattan a vw dealership & service facility where they found "fault 2513" for seatbelt sensor and replaced it under the certified pre-owned warranty with which the car was sold. Open road vw stated that this repair was covered under their 1 year warranty on parts & labor as well as vw's cpo warranty. On 5/14/2014 (mileage 25,280), the airbag warning light came on again. Again I took it to open road vw. They found a fault for the passenger's seat belt force recognition sensor g453. Found defective buckle and replaced it. This repair was covered only by vw's cpo warranty as, the service rep said it involved a different part than the first repair and was therefore not covered by the parts & labor warranty provided by the dealer. On 6/23/2014, airbag warning light came on again. Found 1 fault n200 for resistance too low, replaced connectors for both front seats. , charged $50. 00 deductible as, again, this was a different repair than the last. I contacted vw of America's customer care and they said I would hear from a supervisor. The supervisor e-mailed that she would call me today, June 30, but I have received no call. On 6/28/2014 airbag warning light came on again at 10:pm could not take it the dealership on Sunday because it is closed, but wrote to the supervisor on Sunday. Called vw customer care this morning. Said supervisor would call me, but also that my cpo warranty had expired at midnight June 29, 2014. As this is an ongoing problem that began in April I expect it to be covered. It seems possible that this recurrent issue with the airbag warning light may indicate a potential danger to me and other owners of this vehicle.

The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. The VIN was unavailable.
My name is [xxx]. My wife and son was involved in a head-on collision back last year on may 02, 2014. Wife was sitting still at a light waiting for light to turn green in order to turn left when a car heading from opposite direction ran a red light slammed into another vehicle and then slammed head on into my wife's car which was sitting still at approximately 55 mph and then air bags in the car did not deploy. Due to the impact, wife's head was slammed into steering wheel giving her a concussion and blacking out and getting hurt badly and my son was sitting in passenger seat and jarred around pretty good. I am very upset as how the airbags should have deployed and they did not. It is my firm belief there is a manufacturer defect in the airbags on this car and possibly many more. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2013 Volkswagen Passat (n/a). The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, a vehicle crashed into the passenger side of the contact's vehicle. The crash forced the vehicle into a concrete wall. A second vehicle crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle causing the vehicle to crash into the wall a second time. The air bags did not deploy. The police reported to the scene and a report was filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle away from the scene and sought medical attention at the hospital. The contact sustained a concussion. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000.
We purchased our 2007 Passat 3. 6l 4-motion wagon and had issues with the airbags from day 1 (literally), and had the dealership replace the sensors under both seats within the first three days. Within a month, we began having issues with the tire pressure monitoring system. New tires fixed the tpms issue for about a week, then we began having issues again. A year after we bought the car, my wife had an accident (rear-ended someone), and the airbag did not deploy. We had to have the entire front-end repaired - $10,237 worth of repairs. After the repairs were completed, there was so much external noise than there was before the accident. Over the next 8 months, we began having issues with the check engine light coming on (and staying on). When the car shut off one day, right in the middle of (busy) traffic, I took it back to the repair shop to have them look at it. They took our 2007 Passat to the vw dealership, which made a blanket statement that none of the existing issues were related to the wreck. Therefore, the repair shop would not do anything more to fix the car, and since the car was no longer under warranty, the dealership would not cover the repairs either. On October 29, 2012, 14 months after the accident, the check engine light came on again, as it had many times before. However, on October 30, 2012, the engine died completely. We've since discovered that the bearings are completely gone and were told it will cost us $7,000 to replace the engine. But that still doesn't include repairs to the previously existing issues with the tpsm or the airbag.
