I am requesting that dot NHTSA investigate a safety issue with clock switch part on my 2015 vw Passat, which controls both the air bags and the horn. I purchased the car new in sept 2015. I started my car with 42,500 miles and the airbag light came on and stayed on. The vehicle was stationary in a flat parking lot the first time I noticed the air bag light. When I drove the vehicle and turned the steering wheel there were clicking noises coming from the steering wheel area. When I got home, I googled a couple possible causes and scheduled the vehicle in to a mechanic. Before I could get vehicle in for service, the horn and other steering wheel controls went out. I was left without airbags and a horn on a vehicle that I drive daily. The mechanic determined that the clock spring needs to be replaced. I am responsible for all repair costs. An August 2015 clock spring recall included 416,000 vehicles including 2010-2014 Passat vehicles. My vehicle repair is for the same part, but the year of vehicle is not included in the recall. Air bag sensor has gone on 3 times while under warranty. Each time the dealership fixed it. It has gone off again now that I am @37,000 miles and out of warranty. The steering wheel is making a cranking noise. The horn does not work, the switches on the horn do not work.
My clock spring and switch broke and needed replacement. I was in motion making a turn when a crunching noise was made. My warning lights went off claiming air bag error, acc error. I could not use my turn signal or horn. I was able to pull into a parking lot and call the dealership. After speaking with the dealership, they told me it was most likely the clock spring but I had to get it evaluated. I took it in and it was. I found out that vw had previous recalls for such equipment but not my year. My car is only 2 years old and the clock spring broke. I have never had one break in over 30 years of driving.

Takata inflator replaced, 2 months later, while driving, and turning the corner at low speed, on a city street, into my subdivision at approximately 3-5 miles per hour, during a snow storm. The air bag light illuminates, hear crunching sound coming from steering column, immediately following, I have no horn or steering wheel control buttons. I now hear the same crunching sound coming from the steering column every time I turn the wheel. Called dealer, advised it sounds like the clock switch which commonly fails and would cost around $900 to repair and was not under warranty, since I had 40k at the time of incident. I was advised that my air bag will not work without repair.
Clock spring failure after recall service was performed. 2-8-2018 - upon starting to drive when I turned the steering wheel I heard a scraping sound in the steering column and then the air bag light came on indicating air bag not working, all control switches on the steering wheel and horn was not working. I had the recall for the protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring installed at the vw dealer in March 2016. Vw dealer and the corporate customer service tell me the replacement of the clock spring is not a warranty issue since the recall was performed over 12 months ago. It's obvious to me that the cover recall fix was not the correct fix and possibly caused the problem I now have with the car. Since vw knew there was a re-design of the clock spring to correct a design flaw the cover recall should have been to automatically replace the clock spring with the improved design. I'm being told I'll have to pay $500 to make the repair which I find very unfair in light of the re-design for the part or the possibility the recall repair was not correct and may be the cause of the probelm now.

Takata recall. The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the clock spring switch failed and caused the air bag warning indicator to illuminate. The contact stated that several electrical features on the steering wheel were no longer operational. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Takata recall - I just called vw corp office and they said they are not providing temporary transportation until the part is in. They stated "NHTSA advised them that there was no danger driving the vehicle until the part comes in which is why vw is not providing a loaner vehicle. " please make it mandatory that these dealers provide a loaner vehicle. It is the right thing to do. I owned a Ford which had a recall for a speed switch. Ford never got the part in so they unplugged it. When I went to have my vehicle serviced at a local garage. They plugged the piece back in. Later than month the switch caused the vehicle to burn down. The vehicle normally was parked in the garage underneath my daughters bedroom but the vehicle was in an accident and was being repaired at the body shop. The night before picking it up it had burnt down there at the body shop. Several people died over that Ford recall because Ford never fixed the issue. We are not protecting the consumer on this takata recall if we are not mandating replacement veh while waiting for the part. Again vw stated nhsta told them the vehicle was okay to drive. At the very least the airbag should be removed so that it does not explode metal objects into someone's face thus killing them. Pls mandate either a loaner vehicle or removal of the airbag until the airbag can be fixed. Removal of the airbag should be an option for the consumer. I have an Acura & they are providing a rental car until the part comes in. It is the right thing to do. Nhtsa must make better decisions on behalf of the consumers safety since some of the auto makers are only concerned about there profits. Auto makers are selling new cars with this defective airbag even though legislation has tried to make laws concerning the sale of autos w/ active recalls. I expect more from NHTSA & our govt.

Pods - when I went to get the wheel clock spring recall repair, I still had a airbag error lit - mechanic said it was a faulty passenger occupant device system switch. I only have 32k miles on my car and I very rarely have anyone ride in the passenger seat, so not sure why it failed - was quoted a price of 3k for the part. Jetta and golf models have a recall for this, but not the Passat - if it is a safety issue for those models, it should be one for the Passat as well.

Pulling into a parking space, I felt a click vibration on the steering column and then a message flashed on the dash screen: airbag: error none of the electronic switches on the steering column function, no airbag availability, no horn. I took it to the onion creek dealership in austin, TX and they quickly found what was a quick, but expensive fix can be done. $700 to fix. When I inquired that this is a safety issue and requested they cover the cost, they balked. I contacted vw USA, they eventually agreed to cover 75% of the cost, then later rescinded the offer because the lady at vw USA decided she didn't want to cover it and I had no choice in the matter. When they did offer to pay the 75%, I had agreed to pay the difference. When I attempted to negotiate for greater coverage, I suppose she did not like that.
I was driving my Passat on the highway going 60mph, suddenly an other driver cut me off. To avoid him I switched lane but the traffic was moving slow as I was approaching a constructing site. I hate a car in front of me which caused other 2 cars ahead to be involved in the accident. The damage was severe as the whole front of the car was crashed including the engine and the passenger was fatally injured, he had a shoulder dislocation. What surprised me are the airbags, they never deployed even though I was driving 60 mph. After few days Volkswagen America sent an engineer to inspect the car. After he left I noticed the seat belts are loose and the bottom cover is opened, it seems like he did it in purpose. Before he came the seat belts were fine. What most surprised me is his decision that the airbags can't deployed in this case. I showed him the bottom of the car where is the chassis, it was bent from the direct impact of the forces that came through the bumper which also cause the front beam to twist, but never gave me a satisfied explanation. People who try to buy this car and have kids please be aware of this safety issue, my family was blessed to get out of this accident just with a shoulder dislocation, which could be worst. My next step is lawsuit against vw.

Volkswagen has acknowledged to me, both the dealer (dean team in kirkwood) and their customer support group 800-822-8987) that it is a known issue with 2006 Volkswagen Passats that their is a wiring problem with the airbag igniter switch - the problem conveniently tends to occur right at the time when the car exceeds it's 50,000 warranty. This is a safety issue that they are well aware of yet are ignoring it and refusing to assist with the cost of the repair (unless you have been a Volkswagen customer that has owned at least 3 of their cars - they actually told me this!) I'm not one to typically complain about this but it's a safety issue that they are aware of and should be help accountable as they preach how 'safe' their cars are.

Radio not functioning, air conditioning unit works intermittently, airbag malfunction recognized, operation unit in steering wheel malfunctions, no communications with brake control unit, brake light switch causes drivers side brake light to malfunction. Horn not functioning nearly caused 2 accidents within a month. I drove over an island to avoid one collision from the other non-attentive driver and ended up scraping the transmission pan. Cost of replacement: $550. After thousands of dollars in repairs and diagnostics, vw dealerships still unable to fix any of the above!.

Brake failure light appears even after multiple brake repairs. Driver?s side rear upper brake light replaced for 29th time in less than 2 yrs. Multiple coolant leaks still present even after repair and water pump replacement. Radio/amplifier not functioning even after replacement (radio was only used twice in vehicle?s lifetime). Diagnostics show airbag malfunction. Regulator pin on rear passenger side window keeps breaking (3rd replacement since 2003). Engine cover below car keeps falling off due to rusted bolts. Homelink system keeps malfunctioning. Fuses keep blowing out. Dashboard panel lights out (odometer, fuel gauge, etc. ). Ccm module keeps breaking down. Car needs to be jumpstarted when not in use for over 48 hrs. Climate control (a/c and heater) works only sporadically. All repairs performed by vw dealership, yet same issues keep reappearing just a few weeks after repairs. Repairs performed in past 2 years: ecu unit replaced, brake light switch replaced 3 times, a/c compressor unit replaced, abs module replaced, alternator replaced, brakes replaced 3 times.
