Power steering failed to operate while parking. This happened while teaching my wife how to drive. She was practicing 3 point parking. Upon turning the wheel to the right prior to backing up it felt like the steering of a 53 Chevrolet, then after backing into the drive way it would not come back straight. Being a retired mechanic I was very surprised that a car with only 17000 miles would have such a problem. But after investigating the internet, I found that many others have had the same problem. Seems to work ok though with normal driving, but what will happen in the event of the necessity to turn sharply all of a sudden, I have no idea and I don't care to find out.

I was driving at about 30mph in a residential area, when a sound went off and on the display it read "power steering. " the power steering had failed and did not come back. I was not far from home, but this has happened nearly every day since the first time. It usually only happens at low speeds, less than 45mph or so. If I turn the car off and start the engine again it's usually fine for a short time, sometimes as little as 5 minutes before the power steering fails again.

While changing lanes power steering failed. Shut off car. Restarted and power steering was working. Power steering again failed on 01/10/2015. Gm has a recall on the 2009 and 2010 Hhr for this problem but does not include the 2007. However paragraph five of the gm news release, dated 2014-03-31 states that 309,160 non-turbocharged Hhrs from the 2006-2008 that are not subject to the recall will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor. The service rep. At the local Chevrolet dealer pulled up my VIN number and said the unit had been replaced at some earlier date and replacement at this time is not covered. This is a very serious problem with the Hhr and all models must be included in the recall. I expect my Hhr to steer and stop. Thank you.

Driving as normal when the power steering suddenly failed and the warning light and chime sounded that fact. After turning the engine off, the power steering again worked. The same event happened later in the day. This is a very dangerous failure and after research, numerous 2007 Hhr's are experiencing this as a common failure. Apparently it is a short in the electric power steering unit mounted on the steering column. Chevy absolutely needs to recall before a serious crash occurs if one or more hasn't already occurred.
While driving through a school zone at 25 mph, my power steering failed and reverted to manual steering. My girlfriend is unable to steer the vehicle during the manual steering mode. I researched the VIN recall database and found that there was recall for "some" 2010 non turbo models. Mine is a non turbo model. I had two recalls on my vehicle which I had repaired on 12/31/2014. The following quote is from the gm recall web page: “with these safety recalls and lifetime warranties, we are going after every car that might have this problem, and we are going to make it right,” said jeff boyer, vice president, gm global vehicle safety. “we have recalled some of these vehicles before for the same issue and offered extended warranties on others, but we did not do enough. ” this is a severe safety issue that must be addressed.

Driving mountain roads when power steering failed and "power steering" indicator light came on. When engine was turned off and back on, power steering worked for about one mile before failing again. Judging by the number of similar internet complaints on the 2008 Hhr, can't understand why this problem hasn't been focus of a recall. Wonder what would have happened on that mountain road if my wife had been driving (its her car).
Power steering has randomly failed, and although turning the vehicle off and restarting it will fix the problem temporarily, it continues to fail with increasing frequency.
Power steering failure while driving. Has happened multiple times with more frequency since initial incident. This vehicle VIN # is not included in recall.
The power steering has failed five times in the month of August 2014. Almost failed to make my turn.
My wife was driving we had pulled out of a parking lot on route 207 in the town of hamptonburgh,NY. No more then 20 feet from exiting the parking lot the car shut down and pulled to the right causing us to hit a telephone pole and totaling the car. It is my contention that power assist steering failed thus causing the accident. We where notified of the ignition recall had that taken care of in August of 2012. However chevy/gm contention is the ignition did not fail. The body shop mechanic and gm/chevy's own service advisor at the local dealership said that a catsophic malfunction took place causing the accident.

Electric power steering fails completely causing the vehicle to be very difficult to steer and making the vehicle dangerous to operate at all speeds . Occurs intermittedly and unpredictably.
Power steering fails consistently every time car is driven. First started around 96,300 miles and has continued for the next 9000 miles or so with little change in frequency. Car is not safe for my wife to drive. Could completely fail in a curve or in a steeriing situation and cause a serious or fatal accident.

Chevy Hhr power steering fails at random times and speeds. Becomes progressively worse with time. Seems to be heat sensitive, does it more on hot days after starting a closed up car. Some times happens 4 or 5 times a day, some times much more. Pull over, shut off engine and it resets itself every time. It can be difficult to control on a wet curved expressway ramp when the steering suddenly stops working. The same power steering motor was recalled in canada for the same defect across the board. It is time gm replaced these motors and quit playing around.

Power steering failure. Not covered under recall and gm refuses to include my vehicle in the extended warranty. Below excerpt from gm media center on 3/31/14 press release: "in addition, 309,160 non-turbocharged Chevrolet Hhrs from the 2006-2008 model years (and several hundred 2009 models) and 96,324 Saturn ions from the 2003 model year that are not subject to these recalls will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor. " in addition to being a safety issue in a vehicle I transport children it is also cause me back pain having to muscle the car into turns.
On several occasions while driving the vehicle the electric power steering failed causing my son to have to pull over quickly as it was quite difficult for him to control the car. During one event he also described what seemed to be loss of brakes as he said he had the brake to the floor and was not stopping; he had to use the emergency brake; this occurred at the same time as the power steering loss. He has had several instances where he would try to accelerate without affect.
