36 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/27/2012

While driving on the road to work, the display message center said power steering then there was no power steering. It happened twice that day but after the car was shut off and cooled down it did not come on. The day after it happened again but stayed on longer. When the car was brought into the dealership on 12/31/12 they told us it could be the power steering motor or the steering column witch they both were not under warranty . It keep happening with the car for a week. I then brought my car to my mechanic on 1/4/13 and he replaced the power steering motor and it has not happen sense. Before I brought my car to him I went online to see if there was anyone else with the same problem and what they did it fix it. That's how I found out it wasn't just my car that this has happen to that there was a lot of other people who have had the same problem. Thankfully we were able to control the car and not get into an accident.

39 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/25/2011

I was driving home from work and the electrical power steering went out, I pulled off the expressway onto the side of the road, turned my car off and back on, then I continued journey home. I hadn't drove a mile before it went out again. I pulled off the expressway two or three more times. It continued to go out, so I decided to drive home since the car dealer was already closed for the day. I phoned them from work the next day only to be told that the part had not been recalled and if I wanted to get it fixed it would be $500 plus taxes or more if they discovered that it was the steering column. $500 which I did not have, my husband purchased the part and installed it over the memorial holiday weekend. We would really like to get our money back. My car is only two years old and the electrical power steering should not be going out. I searched the internet and discovered that the same part is used in the chevy cobalt and it has had the same problem, they should have issued a recall on it for the chevy Hhr lt as well, since the same part is being used in it. This is dangerous what if I had been involved in an accident as some of the other people who reported having the same problem on the internet and someone had been killed or injured. I sincerely hope that something can be done to assist me and the other people with the same problem. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

40 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/19/2011

I had just bought a chevy Hhr lt that had 30,000 miles on it from the Ford dealership ( this was a trade in). When I got home with the car, the front end made a jiggling sound. I took it to the chevy dealership and they had to replace the steering stabillizer shaft link and steering column , thank god this was covered by warranty.

41 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

At low speeds in a sharp turn and/or on bumpy roads and sometimes during breaking at high speed, I notice a rattle in the steering column. I told the dealer that I thought my front rotors may be worn but they checked out ok. I think its the electric steering column box with a worn nylon bushing the same as the g6 steering problems. Because my mileage went over 36000 and this problem was not initially diagnosed as a steering problem and not being a power train problem, chevy indicated that its not covered under warranty and there is no recall for this issue. My parents have an 07 Hhr that is having overheating issues in their power-steering, along with the back lashing in the column caused by, I think, the nylon bushing going bad.

42 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/31/2011

I have a 2008 chevy Hhr, and have had to do quite a bit of research to find out what the real issue here is. There are a lot of complaints on other web sites about the intermediate steering shaft going out every few thousand miles. The problem is, that no dealership can seem to diagnose the "clunking" noise coming from the drivers side front wheel and steering column. However the few shops that have figured it out are having to re-replace the part constantly. Gm has re-designed the part for other vehicles but not the Hhr. Mine has been replaced every 10,000 miles, 4 times now and it wears out after about 10k. Gm should create a better one for the Hhr and offer a recall since their part is defective.

47 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/11/2010

2006 Chevrolet Hhr - under normal operating conditions, while driving at low speeds (15 - 25 mph) and turning to the right, car will "chime", "power steering" appears on the control panel and the power steering will go out making vehicle very hard to drive. Once car is shut off and restarted, power steering begins working again. Took vehicle to local mechanic, was told that the electronic steering control unit and entire steering column needed to be replaced. Cost would be $1,355. Taking it to chevy dealer today for second opinion. Purchased car used in 2008 with 27,000 miles on it. Currently has 77,000 miles. Happens approximately 4 times per week for the past month.

48 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/20/2010

Powering steering went out during right hand turn at slow speed. My wife did not have the strength to control the car into the turn. She stopped the car and I checked my manual for trouble shooting, finding none. I restarted the car and power steering worked. Test driving for two minutes the power steering went again. Problem seemed too be after car was driven for awhile and system was used longer. Car was repaired by having the power steering motor and the steering column replaced by chevy dealer ship. I still have old parts.

49 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/14/2009

Purchased the car July 13 of this year. A clunking sound comes from the drivers side when hitting holes or on slightly rough road. Tends to occur more when the car or the weather is cold. Took it to Chevrolet and they diagnosed it as a sway bar link issue. I replaced the rotors, sway bar links (pair), drivers side strut mount and balanced & rotated tires. Problem still exists. Appears that the steering column (intermediary?) has been a problem for other Hhr owners according to online forums and research also points to the same issue in older oldsmobiles.

52 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/03/2007

We have had several problems with our Hhr since we bought in in August of 2007. The first problem occurred just after purchasing it, when we were driving it out on a highway for a first time outing with it, when I noticed the front wheels seemed to be floating back and forth. I slowed down and immediately took it home. We contacted our local dealer, and had the car brought in to be checked out. We were told the front bushings were bad & needed replacing. The dealer replaced the bushings. (under warranty) in September of 2007, we had to replace our cars remote control, even though it was only 1 years old. Our dealer replaced it but we had to pay $81. 82 out of our pocket. October 2007, I brought our can into our dealer because it had a rough ride and groaning sounds. The dealer looked at it and said the sound was coming from the steering column. They replaced our steering column under warranty. December of 2007 my wife, mother & I went to a christmas light parade in our town; when we got home I turned off the ignition & when I attempted to remove the key, it would not come out. That Monday I called our local dealer & they had us bring in the car on 12/3/07. They reported that there was no power to the inter lock2 and a fuse had brown. They found that a wire harness was pinched under the column cover & repaired the harness (under warranty) January 29,2008 I brought our 2006 Hhr into our dealer again complaining about squeaking and popping noise with clunking in left front. They said they heard noise from stabilizer links pivot joint at link tires miss-matched. They replaced both stabilizers links under warranty. Continued on next report.

53 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

My 2007 Hhr w/ 57k miles has an issue with its steering. The steering is jerky, hard to steer at low speeds, and low clunking noises can sometimes be heard from the steering column. I have taken my car to the dealer, but they claim there is nothing wrong. The NHTSA issued a recall in March 2010 on 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet cobalts for a similar issue with the cobalt's steering column. The Hhr is based on the cobalt and was built in the same factory. The recall should be expanded to cover the Hhr model.
