Prior to this, the steering has pulled to the left, even after a realignment. There have long been knocking noises when I turn the wheel.

I have a 2005 chevy. Malibu v6 that has had a problem with it's power steering. I was going down the highway when suddenly the power steering went out and it was very hard to steer and get out of fast moving traffic. When I got it to the dealer, I was told that they had to replace the entire steering column. I have done research on this and have found a number of people with the same experience with chevy. Malibu's. This is a very dangerous defect that the company should recall and repair! some people have had to replace the steering column more than once because the new column put in is still being made with the defect. This power steering failure occurs without any warning and in my case it happened on the highway at 65mph. Luckily I was able to keep it under control but it was amazing that I was able to considering that I was changing lanes at the time! after doing research on this I have learned that others have had similar experiences. I certainly hope something can be done about this.
The 2005 chevy Malibu maxx is well known for having power steering problems. The power steering goes out when you accelerate quickly. It also has an audible chime when this occurs. This is a serious safety issue that gm is well aware of and should be a recall warranty item. The power steering also goes out occasionally when moving slowly. This vehicle has numerous issues, including steering, rotors and struts (steering gear). I have already had to have the struts and rotors replaced at my own expense. It seems unfair and unconscionable to sell a product line with such a serious defect and then expect the customer to pay for the repair. When a few deaths occur perhaps gm will step up the plate and put our bailout money to good use buy fixing the defective vehicles they have sold to their loyal customers. I am reporting a recent date, but this power steering failure occurs quite often.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While entering a parking space, the power steering failed. As a consequence steering became difficult. The dealer and the manufacturer were contacted , but because the warranty expired they would not provide a free remedy. The failure mileage 80,600.
Power assisted steering failed. Steering became hard so I pulled off the interstate at the nearest exit, stopped vehicle and turned it off. After the vehicle sat for a while I restarted it and it worked fine.

Power steering failures. . . Has happened twice in 2 weeks now. Once while sitting still, the other while on the interstate! after searching online, I've found this is a common problem in Malibu's. I think there should be a recall. I thought I was buying a reliable car and instead got a big burden. Being a single mom, these high repair costs will cause me to fall behind in either my car payment or my house payment. . . And believe me I'd rather live in my house then my car.
Learned of a power steering service notice after the power steering failed while entering traffic. Gm authorized the repair and the dealer failed to completely repair the steering or other issue that was directly related to the failed steering. The dealer did not inform me that the car was not completely repaired. The steering now alternates between too much play or partial failure when turning. I brought the car back to the dealer who stated that gm did not want to completely repair the power steering. The steering is worse since the repair. At least before I only lost it twice but when it worked it worked fine. Now I partially lose steering every left hand turn and right turns alternate with a real lot of play and almost normal. Driving straight the car pulls to the right.
Power steering failed while turning left into traffic. The led read out said "power steering". Turned car off. Searched internet and found a service bulletin for the car #07126. Called gm and asked why I wasn't informed of this bulletin since I complained of similar but less intense occurrences since purchase.

Power steering fails with only a beep as warning(as it happens. . . Not before) extremely dangerous.
When starting and/or driving the car for a short time at speeds between 5-45 power steering fails. This has not happened with highway driving yet but I am concerned it will. I am taking car in the nearest chevy dealer for service. I did receive a notice in the mail in December 2007 regarding problems but was not experiencing the problem at the time and did not keep the notice; soon thereafter I did experience referenced steering problem.
I have a 2005 chevy Malibu. On several occasions the power steering has failed, usually when making a sharp turn. I first noticed this around two years ago and complained to gm, in which they stated that other cars like mines had, the same issues, but my car did not qualify for a fix since I had already had too many miles on it.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving approximately 40 mph in the rain, the power steering failed. The instrument panel displayed "power steering", but the service engine light never illuminated. She was driving on the left side of a three lane road when the failure occurred. The vehicle continued to veer to the right as she depressed the brake pedal. As a result, she struck the right guardrail, which caused axle failure, body work, and damage to the passenger side tire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it currently remains. The current and failure mileages were 55,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. On several occasions, the power steering failed. While driving 25 mph, the contact lost control of the steering and it became very stiff. He was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to his destination. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they determined that the steering column failed. The vehicle was repaired for free. Four months later, while driving 20 mph, the steering failed again. The dealer made the repairs for free once again. The steering column continued to fail over the next three years on five occasions. The vehicle was recently repaired in January of 2009 for the steering shaft. The steering shaft was repaired at the cost of $100. The contact had to pay a deductible for this repair because the steering column was not included in the warranty. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that they were going to offer him a seven years or 70,000 mile warranty for the steering column. The failure mileage was 14,838 and current mileage was 31,000. Updated 3/16/09 updated 03/20/09.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While driving 30 mph, the power steering failed and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted and was taken to the dealer. The repairs that were made were unknown, but the failure recurred intermittently. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was unknown.
Power steering failed 2 times in last 3 days and both times it has happened I was stopped. I had no power assist and it takes a lot of effort to move the wheel in any direction. After I did move the wheel several times I regained power steering and was able to proceed on my way. I think this problem should be upgraded to a recall ASAP!.
